  Day 21-- The Perils that lurk in the water
Howdy wranglers, Chuey here with today's Cattle Drive Update. It's a warm day as the sun rose over the horizon. The final night watch was in from the herd as Kaji and Lizzie served up a mes of biscuits with gravy, oatmeal and black thick Texas Coffee. A mighty fine feed if ya are askin' me. Mikey was busy loading up the hot-rolls into the Dragon-wagon (chuck-wagon to all ye green-horns) as the light finally began to bounce off the milling herd of critters out on the pasture just north-east of Doan.
I'd been a ponderin' what had become of Jenny-Lynn and the spies we'd left yonder in the hills keepin' an eye on our rustler friends there. About the time I was gettin to frettin' some, Kiddo came galloping into Doan with news. " Jenny-Lynn had decided the only ways to know what a rustler was thinkin' was to become one of them." .she acted like she is running from the law and asks to join them, she knew Kiddo, Panther, Finnegan, & Sweetie had got her back! This is not an attack, merely a fact finding mission to determine fire power and numbers, BUT JL IS READY FOR COME WHAT MAY! She will slip out of the outlaws camp when they are all sleeping like babies cuz they had to much Red Eye to drink! " That left me with some concerns but knowin' Jenny-Lynn she could handle herself, we began to prepare the herd for the River crossin'.
One of the most dangerous parts of driving cattle was the River Crossings. A deep river that was wide like the Red River, and had a strong current from recent rain presented three great hazards. One was the cattle could be swept downstream, making them tired from struggling and causing them to drown. Cattle have no lick-a-sense and can get half way across and change their minds and turn back, causing the herd to become tangled up together and drown. The River banks themselves were a problem As the herd entered and exited the stream they need firm ground, enough to support 800 pounds of wet beef. Sometimes with the wet cattle ahead, followers found themselves mired in quicksand that sucked the cow down where it died a slow terrified death.
When the water was too hazardous to cross it meant delays which caused problems as many herds arrived at the same locale, needing grass to graze and putting the drivers behind schedule. Wranglers worked 24/7 to keep herds separated while they waited on the River to recede.
With all this in mind, we set out to gather the herd of ornery critters back into one place to begin the arduous task of crossing the rapidly flowing Red River, running fast after all the recent rains. With guns blasting into the air, whips lickin the flanks of some very stubborn strays, and ropin' in cows with infant calves at their sides it took well onwards to noon before the herd was back in line to begin the water crossing.

  Day 7 Waterin' holes or watering holes?
Howdy pardners, Cow Rangler Chuey here again, we spent considerable time today persuadin our Scout Kiddo off the Bar Stool at the waterin' hole he found. it took Jenny-lynn, some fancy ropin and a good cuttin' horse to get him back in the saddle. Miss Susan surprised us cow-punchers with a wonderful spread last night, given Lizzie and Kaji a much needed break.

The most famous "Trail Drives" during the early days of the American west, were from Texas north to the railheads in Kansas, and on to ranchers in more northern states.

They usually began in the spring, so that the cattle could feed on the new grass as they were herded along. For the northern ranges, the key element was to get to their destinations before an early winter came upon them. Also driving cattle driven in the spring, usually avoided the flooded rivers, so if a herd could leave at the right time, the streams and rivers would be shallow and fordable.

Starting too late could cause problems (including the loss of cattle) because the streams/rivers would be flooded from melted snow. The favorite speed was around 10 to 12 miles a day, although at different times, or under ideal conditions the herd might travel 18-24 miles per day. Generally a herd of steers moved faster, but a mixed herd that included cows and calves that moved slower, but was less likely to stampede.

In a trail drive, the cattle were "guided" and sort of drifted along rather than actually driven on an exact path. The drive started after breakfast, and went until time for the noonday meal (dinner) in which the Chuckwagon had gone ahead to pick a spot for the noonday meal. The Trail Scouts rode ahead to find a suitable night pasture.

A herd of around 3000 or so cattle would need somewhere between 12 to 15 drovers, and this included the Trail Boss, the cook, and the wrangler. Rank and/or status of the cowboy was determined by his place on the drive. The best positions were lead or point riders who "guided" the herd, the outriders on the flank were next, and the least favorite position was the "drag" riders who ate a lot of dust from the herd. At night two bird teams would take about two hour shifts, often singin' to the cattle to keep themselves awake. A term that was used for the shift was "Night Hawks" .
In the best of the trail outfits, each cowboy had between eight and 10 horses in a group of horses taken care of by the "wrangler" because the cowboys needed a good swimming horse, a good night horse etc. It was up to the Wrangler to know who each horse belonged to, and keep them together.

Well, times a flyin' and we gotta get these cows bedded down for the night at Bull-Run Creek.

Yipppeyiiiiahhhh cow dawgies

  Hi Tiamaria
Hello everybirdie. Zeena here with today's Rainforest findings. I wish to thank everyone for their awesome support and hope you will enjoy today's feature species.
The Harpy Eagle is a majestic shadow that silently soars above the Rainforest canopy. Once common, and plentiful, today they rest on the brink of extinction. Previously a common sight in Brazil, the Harpy Eagle has become as rare as seeing a unicorn would be. Hunted to near extinction for their feathers, sport and out of fear and concern for their livestock, these awesome giants of the Raptor world are rapidly disappearing. These birds terrify hapless animals that forage in the shifting sunlight of the high canopy. Harpy eagle is the largest and the most powerful raptor throughout America. They belong to the family of accipitridae. American harpy eagle typically inhabits lowland rainforests but are disappearing from much of its range due to habitat loss and it almost extirpated in Central America.
The Harpy Eagle weighs in at 20 to 27 pounds for a hen and 12 to 17 pounds for a male, standing between 40 and 60 inches in length, sporting 5 to 7 inch talons it is a formidable predator dining on a diet consisting largely of sloth and moneys, with other animals making up the balance. In flight the Harpy flies on strong 5 to 7 foot wide spans, silent and watchful for a meal below in the dense Rain Forest canopy.
With wide spread clear-cutting and man's guns, the Harpy Eagle is soon going to be gone from the wild habitat it once claimed. Nesting in tree top nests, the single chick remains with the parents for up to two years. Pairs mate for life thus making it harder to rebuild endangered populations. Many Harpy Eagles have be poached for the private collector market relentlessly, with current breeding programs being established to help stave off their total elimination. Used by Bird of Prey enthusiasts and trained to hunt on command. Many die from lack of proper diet, and education of would be owners. New Government regulations being in place it is hoped to make owning Harpy Eagles a more difficult objective. Would be owners now have to finish a Government regulated Raptors training program which entails sixteen to eighteen months apprenticeship training in care, training and husbandry.
Tomorrow we will take a closer look at a new and exciting find that is shaking the bird community. Discovered in a nestbox, this unusual baby has enthusiasts in awe.
A quick reminder that on Friday July 4th my fister LITTLE ANGEL THRIFT will wed the handsome Mr Dixie Adler at the BC Castle page number 239094

  Hi Tia--Casey really misses you
Hello everybirdie, Zeena here with today's BOTM post. As we land in Brazil, we are cautioned to be very quiet so we don't disturb the Macaws. SHhhhhh!

The Spix's Macaw (Cyanopsitta spixii), also known as the Little Blue Macaw, is a macaw native to Brazil.First discovered by German naturalist Georg Marcgrave, when he was working in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil in 1638 and it is named for German naturalist Johann Baptist von Spix, who collected a specimen in 1819 on the bank of the Rio São Francisco in northeast Bahia in Brazil.
The bird is a medium size parrot weighing about 300 grams (0.66 lb), smaller than most of the large macaws. Its plumage is various shades of blue, with a grey-blue head, light blue underparts, and vivid blue upperparts. Males and females are identical in appearance, the females being a little smaller on average. The Spix Macaw is reported to be extinct in the wild, with the disappearance of one last single male in 2000. All remaining Spix Macaws are now kept in several private breeding programs without the world. Due to their extremely small numbers none are available for public viewing. The largest colony of approximately 40 birds is currently owned by an Arab sheik who has been working on breeding these beautiful birds with the final hope that they will be able to be released into their former remaining habitat.
The Spix Macaws were destroyed in the wild by excessive deforestation and hunting. The colonies were ruthlessly killed, poached for the pet trade and shot for pure sport until they had been eliminated in their territory. The introduction of predators into their habitat, including rats, monkeys and feral cats also aided the quick decline in wild Spix populations. In recent years there have been isolated reports of Spix Macaws in land in protected, isolated locations but this has not been publicly verified, although it possibly might be true, to protect what remaining wild pairs there are.
A sad note, this past Wednesday PRESLEY, the second to last known wild-born member of the species flew to the Rainbow Bridge after a brief illness. Presley had been kept as a pet in the USA for years, but was returned to Brazil in 2008. He left no progeny. He was 40 years old at his death.
Presley's death is a blow to conservation efforts in both a symbolic and literal sense. Critically endangered, these native Brazilian birds (Cyanopsitta spixii) are believed to be extinct in the wild. Decades of deforestation and rampant wildlife trafficking have besieged the medium-size macaws, who also ended up having to compete for nest space with introduced Africanized honeybees.
Now with fewer then 100 living specimens, most closely related, the Spix Macaws future hangs in the balance. This spring heralded in the hatching of 5 babies, 3 of which were due to artificial insemination. Perhaps someday our grandchildren will be able to see the wild Spixs fly free once more.

  Hi Tiamaria
Hello Everybirdie
Today we kick off my month of July BOTM run with a special celebration. It's Canada Day here with all the food,fun, family and firework displays. I hate fireworks, too noisy, but being a Macaw I'm always up for some food, and fun. I want to begin this month by telling you a little bit about myself. Most of you already know my handsome frother SKY, my mischievous fister Little Angel and my adventurous frother Casey, but some may not know me birdsonally.
I joined the Sky Flock in 2013. It was Easter weekend when Momma Deb received the call from my former owner to "come today and get her PLEASE!!!!!" I am sure glad that Momma Deb did, because it was the best thing that happened to me in a long while. I had lived with my first owners for 13-14 years but it became necessary to rehome me and I was sold to a lady who had a whole house full of very large, very aggressive Pitbulls and Rottweilers. I never left my cage and spent a whole year and some living in fear of being attacked by the dogs. I thought things were going to get better when once more I was resold. The lady who bought me had two large dogs who constantly barked and growled at me. I was so stressed I began to pluck some of my feathers out and I never spoke, and hadn't in 2 1/2 years.
It was my best day when Momma Deb arrived to take me away from there. I'd only been there a short while but I was relieved to be going somewhere I hoped would be better. I am very happy here at the Sky Flock, I get out of my cage all the time and love to yell at the other birds to be quiet. Momma Deb discovered I have a rather extensive vocabulary and know how to count to sixteen, and know a number of songs as well.
Enough about me. Let's get our suitcases, cameras and sunscreen ready as we begin our trip to every corner of the world. We will visit some very rare and endangered species, learn about some interesting and unusual birds, and my favorite take a look at some of the awesome mutations showing up around the planet of some of our most common feathered friends.
I will see every one tomorrow.

  Hi Tia Maria,
Hi, long time no blog, but now i'm back...for a while at least! What's going on on BC & what's new?
Mum just posted some pics of some of her stuff. It's just a very small selection of what she's been making. Not so many birds anymore, but she really loves to make Barbie clothes & has a whole big bag full of it. She's been to quite a few markets & her stuff is ever so popular. Tomorrow she's going to one again. It's called "our love market" & all the things on sale have to be made with love, so mum thought that's perfect for her.
Hope you're well & your family is too.
Big hug & birdie kisses,v4u

Just stopping by with a V4U...Also I am campaigning for BOTM and here is one of my blogs..Today my campaign blog will be "Getting First-Aid for your cockatiel who injured itself during flight".....Because of their rapid flight, cockatiels can seriously injure themselves if they collide with an obstruction, such as a sheet of glass,which can end up with the cockatiel having a concussion.They should be taken to your avian veterinarian for them to make a prognosis..There is little that you can do with a concussed cockatiel, apart from placing it in a darkened environment, such as a traveling cage and leaving it alone in the hope that it will recover. Obviously, if the cockatiel has fractured its skull in the collision, then the chances of recovery are doubtful.Fractures of the wing and leg occasionally occur, although they are not common. The affected limb may show an obvious swelling at the site of the fracture, and the cockatiel will be clearly handicapped as a result. Seek the advice of an experienced avian veterinarian about splinting. Avian fractures heal within a few weeks if they are properly supported, although the bird may suffer some accompanying loss of function in the limb concerned. Cockatiels usually adjust well under these circumstances.....Hope this will be of some help in case your cockatiels does injure itself during flight...Have a nice Saturday...Many birdie wing hugs....Sam :o)

  Hello Tia Maria~
I hope you are having a great day!

As most of you already know, I came to live with my mom when her sister was unable to care for me anymore! I have known mom for 30 years and been a part of the family for that long! Mom use to bird sit me so when I needed a new place to live she was the logical choice! That and the fact that she has always loved me so very much!

To celebrate my 6th anniversary of being with my mom, I am holding a fund raiser for Iowa Parrot Rescue. I support this rescue every month and am amazed at the awesome job Mike and Abi do to take care of birds in need of a home. I have many friends who are in forever homes who started out at IPR. I am a lucky bird since I have been with my family for 30 years and will continue to live with them until the end of my life. There are many birds who are not as fortunate as us! They have already adopted out many birds this year but for some reason, no Amazons! Being an Amazon, I want to help out my fellow zons!

On May 25th-next Sunday-every vote that Sam gets will mean a dollar contribution for the Iowa Parrot Rescue! You can help by leaving a vote for Sam that day! I really appreciate every vote that will mean money for the IPR! Tell your friends who may not know me and Thank you in advance!!

I know the BC has been slowing down and many birds have lost interest lately but I hope you will all get out to support Sam and the IPR!

I hope your day is just perfect!

  Hi Tia Maria
We are so sorry it has been a month since our last blogging but the parront has been busy working 5am to 1:30pm for the last 8 weeks. She needs to save some money and also to pay home and car insurance. The A/C broke and she does not know yet how much will be the cost to repair it. The weather is getting hot here already.She also needs a new car, so many expenses.

On Monday 24February she got her first injection on the lower back, there was no much improvement after it, last Monday she got 2 more injections on her lower back, so far her lower back is not bothering her. On Monday 31 she will have another injection on the cervical area.

Also the computer is getting slow, and she does not understand windows 8 yet so she could start using her new laptop.

This is our current situation. Since she is very busy we don't know yet when we will be able to blog again.

This is all for know

See you soon
have a greyt one
be a good birdie

  time for a beak trim
Zena is off to the avian vet tomorrow for a beak trim. Also, she appears to have some kind of discolored callus on the side of the beak that we want to have checked out. She will be 8 years old next week and we are concerned about the discoloration.

Come visit me, Zeus (ORB) : in Memorium, Dad of All the Birds, Tessa, Zena (Zena Warrior Princess) & Zachary.

  Hi TiaMaria
CONGRATS you have made the jockey list. I have info on the Milonga Derby I need to email to you. But, I don't have your email address. You will also have to pick 3 horses. Then I can have the drawing to match jockey to horse. As this is the last BC derby, I hope to make it a good one. Please get a hold of me asap. Thanks.

Come visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

  How are u sweetie? It's been a crazy 1 1/2 weeks! All 3 g-kids had Strept throat...but all better now! I want to give u the last one of the bill of rights, then discuss some household hazards.
You have lots of rights, but I can only assure one. And that is, if u treat me the way I have described, I will reward u with unwavering love, humor, knowledge, beauty, dedication - and a sense of wonder & awe u haven't felt since u were a child. When u took me home, u became my Flock Leader, indeed, my entire universe - for life. I would hang the moon & stars for u if I could. We are one in Heart & Soul.

Some household hazards outside ur bird's cage to be aware of:
* unscreened windows & doors
* mirrors
* exposed electrical cords
* toxic houseplants
* unattended ashtrays
* venetian blind cords
* sliding glass doors
* ceiling fans
* open washing machines, dryers, refrigerators, freezers, ovens,
or dishwashers
* open toilet bowls
* uncovered fish tanks
* leaded stained glass items or inlaid jewelry
* uncovered cooking pots on the stove
* crayons & permanent markers
* pesticides, rodent killers & snail bait
* untended stove burners
* candles
* open trash cans
Next, we will talk about toxic plants. Have a great day sweetie!
Love & a vote

Come visit me, TiaMaria.
