Long time no squawk.
I'm still using my skateboard. I throw it out of my treasure Kleenex box to find my pellets. (Mom insists I work for my food) You should hear me chitter when I find PELLETS. It is so eggciting.
How are you doing? We have had some spring like weather for a week now. The snow in our yard is finally gone, as of last Wed., I think. I'm enjoying SUN coming thru our front window.

  hi Chuey and Mikey D
Thanks for stopping over to say hello. I love being on BC. I am meeting new birds and making new friends. I also love my new home.
This is my 3rd home my Momma Deb knows of, but she said it's my last. Momma Deb had a Sennie named Charlie--but sadly he went to the Rainbow Bridge as a result of an injury. She missed him terribly. I am not a replacement but she loves me just as much. I made her cry when I kissed her today.

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 18
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover BURNS.
Burns can be very serious & very painful to a bird. Shock & infection could possibly occur. Exposure to high temps (flame, hot liquids, steam or any hot object), electricity or chemicals can cause burns. Burns should be suspected if an area of the skin has a very inflamed, irritated appearance, or if the feathers are greasy or burnt. First, try & determine what type of burn ur bird has suffered. The type of burn determines the treatment that should be followed. If ur bird has been burned by HOT WATER, mist the burned area with cool water, or if a leg or foot, immerse the burned area in cool water to help relieve the pain. An antibiotic ointment should be applied. To avoid further damaging the feathers, this med should be either a water-soluble liquid,, spray or powder. Do not apply any oily or greasy substances, including butter, because these substances can damage the bird's feathers.
If the bird has been burnedby HOT GREASE, lightly coat the burned area with flour or cornstarch to help absorb the grease.
If the bird has been burned by ACID, such as toilet bowl cleaner or drain cleaner, gently flood the area with cool water to dilute the chemical, then lightly coat burned area with a paste of baking soda & water.
If the bird has been burned by an ALKALI SUBSTANCE, such as ammonia or lye, gently flood the area with cool water to dilute the chemical, then coat the burned area lightly with vinegar.
If the bird has been burned by an ELECTRICAL SOURCE, such as chewing on a power cord, first turn off the power & disconnect the cord. No home treatment is recommended. Birds suffering from burns may go into shock & will need prompt attention (shock-blog #11). Most burns are a true medical emergency & requires immediate vet attention. However, mild burns may be sprayed or flushed with cool water. These burns may be treated twice daily with small amounts of antibiotic ointment. Tomorrow, we will cover CONCUSSIONS & DIARRHEA. I hope u had a great day sweetie, see u tomorrow!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 17
How are u sweetie? Today, we will cover blood in droppings & difficulty breathing.
BLOOD IN DROPPINGS
One of the most common reasons for blood in the droppings is heavy metal toxicosis (we will cover this later), especially from lead & zinc. This toxicosis can cause blood in urine. If u notice this, seek vet care immediately. Blood may also be seen in droppings due to intestinal or cloacal infections, cloacal growths, or with difficulty passing eggs. Dark tarry droppings may indicate bleeding higher up in the small intestine. Seek vet care.
DIFFICULTY BREATHING
Anytime an animal is having difficulty breathing, it must always be considered life-threatening. If in respiratory distress, a bird's condition can rapidly deteriorate. Check the nostrils for blockage. If external blockage is observed, such as caused by mucus, wipe with a damp cloth. Look for any other blockage such as seeds or dirt. The operculum, a small part of the bird's anatomy inside the nostril could be mistaken for a foreign body, so have ur vet examine & remove any suspected blockage. Wheezing rapid breathing, open-mouthed breathing & nasal discharge are obvious signs of respiratory distress. Less obvious signs could include tail bobbing (pronounced up & down motion of the tail), frequent stretching of the neck, swelling around the eye, loss of voice & sometimes a "clicking-like" sound when breathing. Shortness of breath can also be caused by illness. In that case, the bird should. Be seen promptly by ur vet.
HOME TREATMENT
Keep the bird warm, keep the environment calm & relaxed & consider covering the cage to help reduce ur bird's stress level. Also, turning on a vaporizer near the cage for short periods of time or placing ur caged bird (or a stand for a large bird) in a "steamy" bathroom may help ease labored breathing. Call ur vet's office & ask to be seen immediately. Panting or open-mouth breathing could be caused by overheating due to fright, exercise, or environmental temperature. Overheated birds can develop heatstroke (we will cover this). In these cases, the bird may also hold its wings outstretched from his body, pant heavily, & collapse. Allow the bird to remain quiet in a cooler location. Mist the bird with cool water & have bird stand on a cool wet towel. Do not cool the bird too quickly. Contact ur vet to determine if further treatment is necessary.
Tomorrow, we will cover burns.
I would like to thank you for all the support you have given me with my campaign. I am truly blessed to have such caring & wonderful friends!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 16
How are u sweetie? Our good friend TiPaul #40680, is hoping to join the 10K club. I hope everybirdy will give him a daily vote to help him get there!
Today, we will continue with controlling bleeding.
BLEEDING (BODY)
Locate the source of bleeding. If the bleeding is from a broken pin feather, remove it. Donot use popowdered blood clotting material on a feather follicle (Day #14). Cleanse the area gently with a topical antiseptic such as a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution, etc. Apply styptic powder, cornstarch, baking soda, flour, or boric acid to stop the bleeding. If necessary, cover the wound with gauze pads & hold firm pressure on wound for several minutes, until bleeding stops. Leave the gauze on. If the cut is on legs or feet, apply antibiotic ointment & bandage loosely. If cuts are on the body, cover with gauze & an appropriately sized sock (cut hole in toe of sock for head & holes for legs). DO NOT bandage over styptic powder. For some sources of bleeding, (such as mouth) u may want to try mixing a solution of powdered alum & cold water. Apply the mixture using cotton balls. Press to the affected area for a couple of minutes. Be aware that birds sometimes will pick at their wounds & as a result, bleeding could restart.
BLEEDING -- INTERNAL
Internal bleeding should always be considered life-threatening. This condition could be caused by trauma, a foreign body, cancer, poison, infection or a bleeding disorder (blood fails to clot normally.
SIGNS
Internal bleeding is evidenced by blood coming from the mouth, nares or vent. Even if the bleeding appears to be intermittent rather than continuous, or if u notice some driedspecks of blood, it sshould be considered very serious. Blood in the droppings could be seen was fresh "red" blood or the feces could appear black, almost tarlike. No home treatment should be attempted, call vet & ask to be seen immediately.
BLEEDING FROM MOUTH OR NOSTRILS
This is. A serious situation requiring immediate attention. Occasionally, blood in the mouth may be due to a beak injury. However, unless u are certain that this is indeed thepproblem & u can visually verify the beak damage, seek vet care.
BLEEDING FROM TONGUE
The tongue contains many blood vessels & if injured, may bleed profusely. Seek vet care immediately. You may attempt to stop the bleeding by applying an alum & cold water mixture by dipping the bird's mouth into the solution.
Next, we will cover BLOOD IN DROPPINGS & BREATHING DIFFICULTIES.
See u tomorrow sweetie, have a good day!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 15
How are u sweetie? Today, we will continue with bleeding emergencies.
BEAK INJURY
A beak injury is an emergency because a bird needs both her upper & lower beak to eat & preen properly. Beak injuries often occur after a bird has been attacked by another bird, after flying into a windowpane or a mirror, or a run-in with an operating ceiling fan. (i have a bad habit of chewing on my cage bars & have chipped/broken the tip of my beak several times.) Infectioncan set in rrather quickly if a beak is fractured or punctured or partially missing. U may wish to apply a mixture of alum & cold water to reduce bleeding. Keep the bird calm & quiet. It may be necessary to apply direct pressure to stop the bleeding, using a towel or direct pressure. Observe the bird for at least an hour after bleeding stops. If a piece of beak is dangling, it will need to be carefully removed. If blood loss is considerable or if ur bird seems weak & unsteady, call ur vet's office immediately for further instructions. A bird with a beak injury is usually reluctant to eat or drink. This could last for just a few days or a week or even longer. Try offering softer foods, food cut into very small pieces or warmed food.
NAIL. INJURY
Torn nails may need prompt attention in order to prevent further injury. Ragged nails can catch on items in the cage or on items throughout the house. Remove or trim the part of the nail that is injured. Apply styptic stick/powder or cornstarch to the toenail. If the bleeding does not stop, seek veterinary attention.
We should be able to finish up procedures on bleeding tomorrow. Have a great day & see u tomorrow!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 14
How are u sweetie? Today, we will begin to cover bleeding. This topic will take an additional day or two.
IF UR BIRD IS BLEEDING
1. Always handle the bird gently & calmly.
2. Always observe the bird for at least one hour after bleeding has stopped to make sure that it hasn't restarted.
3. If bleeding has not stopped after a few minutes of treatment, take the bird to vet immediately.
4. If any signs of listlessness, weakness, paralysis or breathing difficulty are noted, take bird to the vet immediately.
5. If bleeding continues, requiring a trip to the vet, try to have another person drive so that u can continue to apply pressure to the bleeding area.
BROKEN BLOOD FEATHERS
Broken blood feathers can cause what appears to be a large blood loss. They are relatively easy to treat. At home, pack the broken shaft with styptic powder or flour. Do not use powdered blood clotting material on a feather follicle, doing so may permanently damage the follicle. (styptic powder, cornstarch, baking soda, flour or boric acid). It is possible that u may have to remove the feather shaft from its follicle to stop the bleeding, or the broken feather could continue to bleed or even become infected. Follow these steps when treating a broken blood feather. This requires 2 people - one to restrain the bird & one to remove the feather.
1. Act immediately & restrain the bird.
2. Using firm pressure & sturdy tweezers or needle-nosed pliers, pull the feather out. To do this, grasp the feather as close to the skin as possible. Be gentle & apply smooth, even pressure. If u are removing a broken wing feather, be sure to firmly hold & support the wing as the feather is pulled out. Ur assistant will need to very carefully apply equal & opposite traction on the opposite end of the wing as u remove the feather.
(NOTE: Bird bones are fragile & there is a risk of causing a bone to fracture. Therefore, consider having an avian vet remove the damaged feather.)
3. After the feather is removed, bleeding from the empty follicle may occur. If this happens, apply direct pressure for 1 or 2 minutes using a cotton ball or ur fingers.
4. Once the bleeding is controlled, observe the bird for at least another hour. The bleeding could recur.
5. Provide supportive care.
6. If blood loss seems excessive or the bird appears weak & listless, call ur vet immediately. If possible, have another person drive so u can watch the bird closely & & help control any bleeding.
We will continue with controlling bleeding tomorrow. Have a good night sweetie!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 13
How are u sweetie? Sorry no blog yesterday, of course it was mom's fault! It was G-son Sammy's 7rh birthday, AND mom got my sissy tickets to Theresa Caputo's live show yesterday (The Long Island Medium)! It was almost 10pm when they FINALLY got home, plus I demanded some mommy time! She actually did try to do a blog after I went night-night, but she ended up sleep-blogging! She did a short blog but only posted it on my page!
Today, we will discuss:
ANIMAL BITES
Bites can be life-threatening emergencies. Animal bites not only cause the obvious puncture wounds but also the potential for serious internal injuries & fractures resulting from the "crush" of the animals jaws. Serious infections can develop from being bitten or from being scratched. Once bacteria gain entry into the body from even a very small puncture wound, bacteria can spread via the bloodstream & develop rapidly into a life-threatening situation. The first 48 hours after an animal bite is a critical time period
Cat bites are a little more serious. The PASTEURELLA MULTOCIDA bacteria, which is present in cat's mouths & on their claws, can cause death within 24 hours if not properly treated. Anytime a bird is attacked by an animal, it should be taken to the vet immediately.
SIGNS
Sometimes bite marks can be seen, but often are hidden by the feathers. Look for general signs of trauma, which could include blood, matted feathers, "droopy" wing, unsteadiness on the perch or an unusual increase of feathers in the cage or on the house floor.
HOME TREATMENT
There is really no effective home treatment. Call ur vet's office & transport immediately.
VETERINARY TREATMENT
Your bird will first checked for stability, & if she appears severely injured & in shock, treatment will begin immediately. If ur pet appears stable, a complete physical exam will be given first, followed by appropriate treatment, which will probably include administration of antibiotics. Diagnostic tests may include x-rays to examine for bone & internal injuries & a blood test.
PREVENTION
Be careful & use common sense when keeping birds with other pets, especially dogs & cats. If u do have ur bird out of her cage when other pets are around, supervise them closely.
Yikes! What a frightening subject! An equally scary topic tomorrow...bleeding! See u tomorrow sweetie!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 11
How are u sweetie? Today, we will start with: SHOCK:
Shock is a critical situation that occurs when the cardiovascular system fails to supply adequate blood to the organs of the body. As a result, low blood pressure develops & the cells in the body do not receive adequate amounts of nutrients & oxygen. Shock may follow any serious insult or trauma to the body, including bleeding, severe infection, dehydration, prolonged diarrhea, vomiting or poisoning. If left untreated, shock frequently results in death. Birds that are in shock will appear weak, rapid shallow breathing, have fluffed-up feathers & head may be turned with eyes partly closed. If u believe that ur bird is in shock, keep her warm, cover her cage/carrier & transport her to ur vet's office immediately. Be sure to call ur vet's office to give them time to prepare for the emergency. Once ur bird arrives, ur vet will immediately examine the bird, get a brief history & begin treatment. This will include administering fluids to hydrate the bird & oxygen to ease difficult breathing, warming the bird, administering "shock specific drugs as needed & closely monitoring the bird. Once ur bird is stable, diagnostic tests will likely be recommended. These can be very important to better assess the extent of the injuries, offer a realistic prognosis & monitor the bird's response to treatment.
COMMON DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
There are a few commonly performed diagnostic tests that can be especially useful in an emergency situation are:
COMPLETE BLOOD COUNT & DIFFERENTIAL (CBC)
An excellent initial screening test for the presence of infection, inflammation, anemia, blood parasites & protein levels.
BLOOD CHEMISTRIES
Evaluation of chemical components in the blood provides important info that helps to formulate an accurate diagnosis, prescribe proper therapy & monitor response to therapy. These tests look for imbalances in certain biochemical functions, which could point to the possibility of organ dysfunction.
RADIOGRAPHS OR "X-RAYS"
The ability to "see" inside the body is one of the most valuable diagnostic tools available. Bone abnormalities, size & appearance of most internal organs, presence of foreign bodies or soft tissue masses, such as tumors,h& much more can be evaluated with X-rays.
GENERAL SUPPORTIVE CARE
Basic medical care from which most sick birds will benefit, regardless of the illness. This term can apply to care administered both at home & in the vet's office. At home, "general supportive care" should include keeping the bird warm, making sure she has easy access to food & water, keeping her quiet & calm & watching for signs of improvement/ deterioration. In the vet's office, "GSC" could include warmth, oxygen therapy, fluid therapy,x"force-feeding" & nebulization therapy (breathing treatment). This care would also include close monitoring by the attending vet & the trained staff.
Tomorrow, we will continue with med emergencies. Have a great day sweetie!

How are u sweetie? Several birdies told me that they went to Sky's page & read blog #9, & not to worry about resending it. But if anybirdy does want the blog CONTACT UR VET WITHIN 8 HOURS let me know & I'll redo it & send it to u.
Several birdies commented on my awesome campaign pics! Each & every one of the pics were lovingly made by sweet Momma Deb! I'd like to thank her again for my wonderful pics! She will be the best momma-in-law EVER!
We will now begin discussing medical emergencies/problems & first aid procedures. This info is meant to be guidelines, not to replace veterinary care, but to stabilize ur bird until u can get to ur vet's office.
An important aspect of first aid is PREVENTION. Many serious illnesses can be prevented when whenoowners feed their pet birds balanced diets, keep their pet's cages clean & take their birds to their vets for regular check-ups. Most injuries can be prevented by "bird-proofing" ur home, be careful of other pets around ur bird, keeping nails & wins trimmed, etc.
LOSS OF APPETITE
Birds usually lose their appetite when they are sick or injured. Loss of appetite is not a diagnosis, it is the result of a medical problem & serves as an indication that there is a problem with ur bird. Healthy birds have healthy appetite.
Tomorrow we will start with shock.
Have a good night sweetie!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAy 8
How are u sweetie? Well, the Polar Vortex is finally heading back to the Arctic Circle, where it belongs! The g-kids had a 2 hour delay on Monday & cancellation yesterday & today! There was supposed to be just a 2 hour delay today, but because of these frigid temps, the school buses wouldn't start. They said that at these extreme temps diesel gas turns to gel...but it will warm up enough for them to go back tomorrow...the temp is going up to 33 degrees...it's going to feel like a heat wave! Monday night we had a low of -13 & Tuesday we had a high of -5!
Today we will continue with: WHEN TO CONTACT UR VET.
CONTACT UR VET IMMEDIATELY IF UR BIRD:

HAS SIGNS OF GASTROINTESTINAL, URINARY, OR REPRODUCTIVE DISTRESS INCLUDING:
*Straining continually, but unable to produce feces or urates
*Choking
*Swallowing a foreign body (ex: toy, cage decoration, bell clapper)
*Any condition that makes it difficult to eat or manipulate food (injury to a foot or the beak)
*A prolapse or eversion (being turned outward or inside out) at the vent or bleeding from the vent
*Egg binding: straining & having difficulty producing an egg
*An overdose of medication or suspected poisoning
HAS SIGNS OF GENERAL ILLNESS OR NERVOUS SYSTEM OR MUSCULAR DISEASE INCLUDING:
*Extreme weakness, lethargy or depression, unconsciousness, collapse, or coma
*Seizures (flapping wings while lying in the bottom of the cage)
*A head tilt nystagmus (eyes move rapidly from side to side), staggering, walking in circles, difficulty sitting on a perch, or other problems moving
*Severe or continuous pain
*Sudden inability to bear weight on a leg or use a wing
*Swollen or injured foot due to a leg band problem.
Tomorrow we will finish this with: CONTACT UR VET WITHIN EIGHT HOURS.
Have a great day sweetie, I'll see u tomorrow!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 7
How are u sweetie? So sorry no blog yesterday, mom had a medical emergency "ironic, isn't it?!) Her 7 yr old grandson had a horrific nosebleed that mom couldn't get stopped. The specialist (ENT doc) has run every test in the book & cannot figure out why it keeps happening! I've examined him myself!) It's frustrating that it keeps happening & also a relief that it's nothing serious! These nosebleeds come out of the blue, they can happen even if he's sitting quietly, watching TV! At the hospital yesterday, they cauterized his nose...AGAIN! He's doing fine today!
It is FREEZING COLD here today, at 10am, STILL 9 degrees BELOW zero! Tho, this is a heat wave compared to the north-central part of the USA. Grand Forks ND will have a HIGH today of 39 degrees BELOW ZERO!! I can't imagine how cold that is! We heard on the news that it's colder here than it is at the South Pole!!!
The next couple days, we will discuss scenarios & whether to call the vet immediately or whether it can wait. The following info may help u decide which conditions are absolute emergencies & which ones may let u take a "wait & see" attitude. If your bird is sick/injured & u are unsure of the severity, it's best to call the vet's office immediately.
CALL VET IMMEDIATELY IF UR BIRD:
HAS SIGNS OF HEART OR RESPIRATORY DISEASE INCLUDING:
*No heartbeat
*No breathing (open mouth breathing, tail bobbing while breathing)
*Wheezing or clicking sounds when breathing
*A near drowning
*ANY breathing abnormality after an exposure to overheated Teflon (we will cover this in detail), aerosol spray, or other irritants to the respiratory system
HAS TRAUMA INCLUDING:
*A broken bone, or a cut that exposes a bone
*Bleeding that cannot be stopped (ex: from blood feather, nail, or beak)
*An eye injury or the eye appears enlarged or protruding
*An attack by an animal
*Being hit by a moving object
*Puncture wounds
*Any trauma to the head
*Flying into a window or other object
*A severe laceration, or an incision that has opened & the skin is gaping
*Mishandling (ex: squeezed by a child)
HAS HAD HEAT OR COLD RELATED INJURIES INCLUDING:
*Biting on an electrical cord & receiving a shock or burn
*Burns or inhaled smoke
*Heat stroke (panting, holding wings out away from the body)
We will pick up here tomorrow. Have a great day sweetie!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 5
How are u sweetie? JEEZ, what crazy weather we are having!! At 1pm today, it was 52 degrees & tomorrow night it will drop down to 13 degrees BELOW ZERO!!! A difference of 65 degrees, can u believe it! On Tuesday, we will have a high temp of 2 degrees below zero! I don't think mom will venture out til the slight warm up on Thursday!
Today we will discuss restraining & transporting a sick or injured bird. To make capturing a sick/injured bird easier, towel him before u put him in his carrier (unless u are transporting him in his cage). Towels make pet birds easier to handle, & they give the bird something to chew on if he becomes frustrated with the toweling process. Jade an appropriate sized towel; wash cloths for small birds, kitchen dis towels for medium-sized, & bath towels for large parrots. When you restrain a bird, keep the following in mind:
*work quickly to minimize handling time. Stress & overheating problems will be reduced.
*plan ahead. Have all tools, equipment & meds ready prior to restraint.
*for small birds especially, a net would be helpful to catch if bird escapes.
*towel selection is based on size of the bird. It WILL be chewed on, so choose an old one!
*In pet birds, the beak causes injuries. Respect it & protect yourself.
*Birds have very fragile bones. Their legs & wings are most susceptible to injury.
*Don't put any pressure on the bird's chest while holding him. It will interfere with breathing.
Call ur avian vet's office BEFORE leaving ur house. Explain ur emergency so the vet's office can be ready for ur arrival. By taking this step will save u precious time if u have life-threatening emergency. If possible, enlist a driver so u are able to watch ur bird & reassure him. Cover the cage/carrier to reduce stress & additional warmth. Do not clean out the cage/carrier, the as-is environment may help ur vet determine the cause of your bird's illness.
Tomorrow we will start discussing first aid procedures. Have a good evening & I'll see u tomorrow sweetie!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 4
How are u sweetie? I off to a late start today! A special thanks to Blue & his mom for passing on info regarding what to use for cleaning skin wounds. Blue's mom prefers to use normal saline solution. The nurses taught her that peroxide, alcohol & Betadine (povidone) inhibits tissue healing & saline or just water & soap (NOT antibacterial soap ( which contains triclosan) is the best thing in the world for birds & humans.
Today, I would like to talk about shock & urgent care don'ts.
SHOCK
Any emergency, severe insult to the body or excessive handling can result in shock. Common symptoms include a "depressed", weak, "fluffed up" look & rapid shallow breathing. If a bird in shock is given intensive treatment and/or handling, the bird may collapse & die on the spot. In a life-threatening injury or illness, simultaneously treat the bird for shock & for the injury/illness.
URGENT CARE "DON'TS"
*DON'T give a bird medications for other animals/humans unless directed to by ur vet.
*DON'T give ur bird meds that are suggested by a friend, store employee or a Dr who treats humans.
*DON'T give a bird alcohol or laxatives.
*DON'T apply any oils/ointments to ur bird unless directed.
*DON'T bathe a sick bird.
There are a few things to keep in mind when facing a medical emergency with ur bird. First, keep as calm as possible coz ur bird is already excited from being injured. Ur bird will sense ur stress & u will exacerbate this distress. Next, stop any bleeding, keep the bird warm & minimize handling him. After you've stabilized ur pet, call ur vet's office for instructions, telling them, "This is an emergency," & that ur bird has had an accident. Describe what happened to ur pet as clearly j calmly as u can. Listen carefully to the instructions u are given & follow them. Although u should not handle an injured/sick bird, u may need to in order to take him to the vet. When handling ur bird, make sure to move slowly & talk to him in a calm, reassuring voice. Finally, transport to the vet's office as quickly & safely as u can.
I will see u tomorrow sweetie!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 3
How are u sweetie? I hope everybirdy made it thru the storm ok! We got about 6 inches of snow, but it's the below zero temps that is so miserable!
Today we will discuss first aid priorities (triage) & signs of illness.
In an emergency situation, try to keep calm & work in an orderly process. U should first determine whether the injury/illness is life-threatening. If there are multiple injuries, prioritize ur efforts according to the severity of each injury.
LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES OR ILLNESSES
Severe bleeding or blood flowing freely from a wound must be attended to immediately. Treat such life-threatening injuries/illnesses by administering first aid immediately & then calling the vet.
NON-LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES/ILLNESSES
Injuries or illnesses that are causing distress or pain but are not life-threatening, such as fractures, diarrhea or vomiting, should be treated next. U should be preventing the injury/illness from worsening & preparing the bird for transportation to the vet.
MINOR INJURIES OR ILLNESSES
Injuries such as a superficial abrasion or minor cut come last in the order of priorities for treatment. Carefor the bird at home if u know how to treat the condition. Take the bird to the vet if the injury/illness does not improve or if the condition worsens.
SIGNS OF ILLNESS
*bleeding
*loss of appetite
*feathers fluffed all of the time
*change in droppings
*change in water consumption
*weight loss
*inactivity
*drooping wings
*sleeping all the time
*partially eaten food stuck to bird's face or food has been regurgitated onto cage floor
*labored breathing, with or without tail bobbing
*eyes closed most of the time
*soiled or pasted vent
*self-mutilation
*runny nose or eyes
One of the best ways to detect an emergency situation in ur pet bird is to know what is considered normal for ur pet bird.
RECORD NORMAL APPEARANCE & BEHAVIOR
Be aware of how much food he/she eats & how much water he/she drinks on a regular basis. Know how many times he/she eliminates in a day & what a normal dropping looks like for ur bird. Pay attentionto his/her activity level & his/her sleep times. When u are attuned to your bird's normal behavior, you'll notice anything abnormal or unusual right away. Let ur avian vet know about any changes in ur pet's routine as soon as u notice, so follow-up care can take place promptly.
Tomorrow we will discuss specific injuries/illnesses & how to properly treat them.
THANK U SO MUCH FOR UR SUPPORT!

  Hi Chuey & Mikey D
DAY 2
How are u sweetie? We are praying that everybirdy makes it thru the upcoming storm(s). We will be having below zero temps & a few inches of snow, but nothing like our friends in the far north-eastern states!
Today's topic is: WHAT CONSTITUTES AN EMERGENCY? A medical emergency is a serious and/or life-threatening injury or disease that requires immediate care. In some cases such as bleeding, first aid at home may be the best 1st course of action. Here are some guidelines on when to call ur avian vet.
CALL IMMEDIATELY WHEN UR BIRD HAS/IS:
*doesn't stop bleeding
*blood in droppings or in regurgitated food
*extensive burns
*collapsed or can't maintain balance
*has been poisoned
*puncture wound or deep cut
*cannot breathe
*straining to pass droppings or an egg
CALL SAME DAY WHEN BIRD HAS/IS:
*lost her/his appetite
*an eye injury
*swallowed a foreign object
*low body temp
*mutilating his/her skin
*loose droppings
*develops a sudden swelling on body
CALL NEXT DAY WHEN UR BIRD:
*is excessively thirsty
*seems to have itchy skin
Bird owners are frequently unsure if a problem is truly an emergency. The best thing to do is to follow ur instincts & use good common sense. If there is any doubt in your mind regarding the severity of ur bird's condition, it's best to treat it as an emergency.
Tomorrow's topic will be triage (first aid priorities). See u tomorrow sweetie!

(~> Hello Momma DD, Chuey & Everybirdie
Rosalie Hale Bopp here on my continuin’ mission to reassure all Birdie Parronts and Flockmates who've been left by a Flockily member for their Journey up here to The Rainbow Bridge that your Beloved Fid has arrived safely … and in grand fashion I might add!

Ya see, my job here at The Rainbow Bridge is Welcomin' Committee ChairParrotson. And it's my duty and honor to be perched on The Gates for each new arrival, to greet them and make sure that they get settled in and taken care of real good! Like one of the new Family that they are.

Well, I can tell ya that Your Casper came zoomin' in, in the wee small hours, like The Most Handsome Mr Goffin's Too ya've ever laid eyes on! Landed on The Gate right beside me, shook my wing, introduced himself, and jumped right down and marched off to the Main Complex up here like he was leadin' a Parade or somethin'!!! **CHuCKle**

I got him all settled into his own private quarters; got him all the supplies he needed to set up house keepin'. And then we started talkin' about what he'd like to have on the menu for his Welcome Buffet Dinner. I gotta tell ya, this Little Guy is somethin' else! When he found out that it was MY HatchDay, he insisted that I-I-I choose the menu 'cause, after all, it should be my Celebration. But I told him I wasn't havin' none o' that. We'd SHARE the Honors. So, in addition to my favorites, I asked The Chef to prepare a healthy servin' o' Bagels with Cream Cheese, Chicken Wings ( a whole BUNCH o' different flavors!), a big Crock o'Chicken Noodle Soup with a special servin' o' Mushy Crackers, a couple o’ different kinds o' Pizza, and Oatmeal (with all kinds o' toppin's)!!! We're gonna have us some GOOD EATS tonight, we are!

Then, when everything settles down, in a couple o' days, I'll get Casper set up with his own account on The HeavenNet so's he can let you all know how he's doing up here just this side o' Heaven himself. In the mean time, he has the ability to let you know that he's alright just by whisperin' it to ya on the wind. Or he could even give ya a little wing flap of a breeze against your cheek sometime. So, pay attention to the little things. It could just be Your Casper lettin' ya know he's doin' fine up here with us while he waits for the day when ya can all be together again ... when The Boss says it's time.

Oh yeah, and before we head off to the party, he wants me to make sure ya all know that he really is doin' good and feelin' fine. He misses ya, but he knows that the day is comin' that he'll get to see ya again. And until then, he'll just be a Guardian Angel Birdie watchin' over ya from up here.

We gotta scoot now. Good Food waits for NO BIRDIE!!!

(((HUGS)))
