Once more it is SKY here with a story about one amazing Cockatoo. The original store is on hold, as the Veterinarian I was to interview was unable to speak with me as of press time. In it's place we will visit Vienna, Austria and a talented Goffin Cockatoo who is making science headlines.
Figaro is a captive born male Cockatoo who has drawn the research world of cognitive biologists to a new area of discovery. Goffin Cockatoos by nature are a highly playful, curious Indonesian parrots. Figaro however has broken new ground when it was observed that he was able to make and use wooden tools in order to get food. Researchers from both the University of Oxford, and the University of Vienna are studying this advanced usage of cognitive and intellectual abilities.
It began when Figaro was seen playing with a small pebble in his outdoor flight. At some point he poked the pebble through the cage mesh and it fell beyond his reach by beak or claws. After several failed attempts to retrieve his pebble he was seen to search for a small stick and after chewing to the correct size, he used it to roll the tiny pebble within easy access.
To test this observation, researchers put nuts in the exact same spot the pebble had fallen. Figaro saw the nut, flew to a large cage beam, chewed a long piece off and using his beak fashioned it into a spoon shape which he used to pick up and bring the nut within his reach. Testing at different locations, using various objects and food proved to bring the same results.
As a result researches have concluded that any species of parrot can adapt to factors in its environment to allow it to obtain food. How Figaro discovered how to make and use tools is unclear but it has opened the roads to even greater understanding of the intellectual levels of all species of birds.
I'm pretty sure us birds already knew all this, it just took researchers longer to figure out how smart we really are!
