  Hi Mango
I promised you T Rex, and here he is! The first pic shows the type specimen of T Rex. This is the first one ever described in the scientific literature, so he is the one everyone compares to their T Rex finds. (Our museum has 5 type specimens on display in Dinosaur hall.) The 4th pic gives you an idea of his size, although no small pic could ever do him justice! The guy on the right in that pic is called Peck's Rex, he is a cast of one on display in Montana. The second pic shows him head on, I sure wouldn't want to run into this guy! You can see his teeth, some of them are a foot long(crown and root). The third pic shows his relationship to US! That is a wishbone you're looking at! It kind of looks like a boomerang on top of the sternum or breastbone, doesn't it? This guy stands 16 feet tall at the hips, but still has bird like feet, the s curve in the neck, and all the other 100 characteristics that tell us we are dinosaurs. A really neat thing about him is found on his jaw bone, I hope you can see it. There are some circular holes in his jaw. This is caused by a protist called Trichomonas, and the condition is called trichomoniasis. How do I know? Well, where mom works at the wildlife center, they still treat raptors like Great horned owls for this same condition! If nothing else has persuaded you, maybe the fact that these guys got bird diseases will do just that. There's so much to say about T Rex, the largest carnivore ever to live on land. We're sure you've heard most of it before, but one thing the Peck's Rex has taught paleontologists is that these guys didn't live as long as previously thought. They've aged this one as between 30 and 35 at death, but a close analysis of his bones show evidence of senescence--he has bone cysts and some traces of arthritis. So, he was an old animal at 30! They've found 2 types of Rex in North America, a more gracile one and a robust one. If mom had a guess, she'd say the more gracile one is the male, and the more robust one the female, because she would have been defending the nest. We know that T Rex had feathers as a hatchling, and may have kept some into adulthood, probably for sexual display. This may mean only the males kept them. They could have been on the face, the head, or the tail. Some paleontologists today are even picturing them covered with feathers as adults, although when skin imprints have been found, they look more bare and scaly. Tomorrow we will do another animal or 2, but I wanted you to see this great one today! Thanks for your support all month long, I know it was probably hard to get here and vote each day. Whether I win or not, I've had a great time showing you Dinosaurs in Their Time. Here's a hug and vote for you today. See you tomorrow, Gizmo

Come visit me, Gizmo, I miss you, sweet boy, Willie, Kaji, TiPaul, and Sky for 10k!, Peppino, In Divo's memory & Falco, Mikey and Chipper for 10k.

  Hi Mango
Today we are looking at a hadrosaur, more commonly known as a duck billed dinosaur. This is an immature animal, not nearly fully grown, but you can see some neat things on it. First of all, the head defines it as corythosaurus, with that rather smallish crest. You can clearly see the duck bill on the front of its face. This guy had cheeks, and about 140 teeth in the back of its mouth, so it's likely that it chewed its food. If you look at its hands, there are 5 fingers there, and there are huge tendons on its vertebral column to help support the tail. Does this description sound familiar? It should, we saw the same 5 fingered hand, beak, and vertebral tendons on that little dryosaurus that we met a couple of weeks ago. This is one of its descendants. The dryosaur gave rise to all the iguanodonts and all the hadrosaurs, so it was a very successful dino line until the end of the Cretaceous. Oh, I nearly forgot! That crest is a giant nasal cavity with twists and turns in it. That denotes that this guy/girl could make a huge noise. That is important because they grazed in a herd, and the lookout/s for the group could use noise to let them know when T Rex was coming towards them. For those who ask, this one was found in the Judith River formation. Thanks for your daily support in a very busy month for all. Here's a big hug and vote for you today. Gizmo
