Mom just got Enslaved by Ducks and Fowl weather from Amazon, she can't wait to dig into them. We also want to recommend books by Tony Hillerman to anyone who loves mysteries. Donna Andrews is one of my mom's favorite authors, and she has read all of the books in the Meg series. There is always an animal or two in there. Blaize Clement wrote a nice series about a pet sitter as well, but I think she may have passed away so there probably won't be any more. Recommend the ones out there though. Chloe enters the library quietly as
she knows one is supposed to be quiet in a library so others can read in a quiet surrounding.
She goes up to the front desk and speaks with Cookie...I would like to recommend a picture book for parrots called "Polly Wants a Poem!". It is a cute book of poetry and prose just for us parrots that our parronts can read to us and it has pictures of real birdies in it for us to look at, I know this cause my frother Simon is in the book twice and Taz is in once. It was written by Bob Morrow, he has published hundreds of poems for children but until he found himself sharing his home with Harley (CAG) who quickly converted him to parrot fan. A portion of each sale is donated to The Alex Foundation. Pictures of the book can be found on my page.

There's an author named Donna Andrews who does mysteries written kind of humorously, and all of them have bird names: The Real Macaw, Cockatiels at Seven, etc. Any of them makes a fun and quick read. The story of a sanctuary for animals that was founded in the mid 1980s and built from the ground up by a group of friends. with a book suggestion. They wonder if the library has a copy of Birds on the Couch: The Bird Shrink's Guide to Keeping Polly from going Crackers and you out of the Cuckoo's Nest by Ruth Hanessian. Here are some books for the library, we'd like to donate them: Song of the Dodo, by David Quammen, is about island biogeography and is very interesting; The Reluctant Mr. Darwin, by the same author, discusses Charles Darwin's personality and why it took him so long to publish his theory. He was nearly upstaged by another scientist!; Beak of the Finch, talks about the work among the Galapagos finches going on today; and some light reading: any Inspector Brunetti mystery by Donna Leon. She sets her stories in Venice, Italy, so the setting is great and the plots have unusual twists in them at times. Another story of a human-bird relationship - SHARING A ROBIN'S LIFE by Linda Johns is the true story of a robin named County who chose to share life with the author after being rescued as a fledgling. Although County is a free flying house bird, the author tries to give her as close to a natural life as possible. This includes nest building, foraging for food and egg laying. One last children's picture book - TERRIFIC by Jon Agee is about Eugene Mudge, a pessimistic old curmudgeon. He wins a free trip to Bermuda and of course everything goes wrong ! He ends up shipwrecked on a deserted island with a broken winged parrot named Lenny. Lenny's help and friendship end up being the catalyst for Eugene's transformation and rescue ! Another quaker book today ! PARROTS IN THE CITY : ONE BIRD'S STRUGGLE FOR A PLACE ON THE PLANET by Mattie Sue Athan, Jon-Mark and JoAnn Davey is about us quakers ! It details our history and introduction to the United States, our lives (and restrictions here), as well as suggestions for forming better relationships with local power companies (my feral brothers like to build nests around power grids). Another memoir about life with the flocks ! CORVUS : A LIFE WITH BIRDS by Esther Woolfson weaves together information and humor. The author writes as though she's sitting with you in your living room chatting about her flock back home in Scotland. Despite the title, the flock includes not only corvids (crows, ravens, magpies), but parrots too, and all their distinct personalities and ways of communicating. Pickles has two other books : PICKLES THE PARROT RETURNS : MY CONTINUED ADVENTURES WITH A BIRDBRAIN and PICKLES THE PARROT SPEAKS : ON LIFE, THE UNIVERSE, AND SESAME SEED, both also by Georgi Abbott. Although mom has both in her library, they sit on her pile unread as of yet. It appears, though, that Pickles is narrating the last book and some of the snippets are very funny ! If you've read these others, mom would love to hear what you think ! It would be a mistake to leave ALEX AND ME by Dr. Irene Pepperberg out of my campaign for we were all touched by Alex through the years, and we were all saddened by his early passing. This is not only Dr. Pepperberg's fascinating story of her research of bird intelligence, but it's also a personal story of love. Not a picture book - a middle years chapter book, HARRY'S MAD is by Dick King-Smith (author of Babe : The Gallant Pig). PROVIDENCE OF A SPARROW : LESSONS FROM A LIFE GONE TO THE BIRDS by Chris Chester is a story mom can relate to. As a teen, her mother rescued a sparrow in the yard and raised it. Bucky became a part of mom's family. In this memoir the author also rescues a sparrow and makes "B" a part of his family. Another reference book today - HOLISTIC CARE FOR BIRDS : A MANUAL OF WELLNESS AND HEALING by David McCluggage and Pamela Leis Higdon is a practical and comprehensive guide to bird care. It includes sections on emotional well-being, anatomy, nutrition, recognizing illness or injury and homeopathic treatments. There are numerous appendices on finding avian vets, helpful websites, suppliers of homeopathic remedies, and a bibliography for further reading. A while back an e-mail was circulated about a man and his eagle. AN EAGLE NAMED FREEDOM by Jeff Guidry is that story ! The author was volunteering at a wildlife center when a baby eagle, sick and injured was brought in. The book tells of the tender bond that the author developed with Freedom. With his patience, Freedom became a part of the educational training until Jeff is diagnosed with lymphoma and must undergo chemotherapy. It's about a baby bird snuggled in the nest trying to decide whether to fledge or not. Today is a little more serious. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS by Christopher Cokinos tells the histories of 6 extinct North American birds. It is a fascinating personal story into the past.
