I really wanted to have an african grey because of how intelligent they are. Marco came to the petstore in Derby Ks at 3wks old and they lovingly hand raised her there. I was able to visit every weekend and watch her grow. I was finally able to bring her home on Easter 2012. Its been an amazing year with her home. She is just beginning to talk.. Awards

Hi! My name is Marco

I am a Congo African Grey from sharon, KS.

beanface or silly girl

4 years old   F

Congo African Grey

Marco loves beans! She loves her birdie bread too. Pomegranites and sugarsnap peas are atop the list as well. Course she really loves whatever I am eating too!

Marco likes to hang at the top of her cage's playgym or infront of the window on her homemade tree stand. When shes in the kitchen with me, she has her own home made swing in there as well.

Marco hates it when you move large objects around the house usually scares her :(

My owner is the best. She spoils me rotten with new toys every time she goes shopping. She has even learned to make some cool toys for me. I get lots of attention and lots of love from the whole family even tho I only like to step up for mommy and nip at everyone else :)

Marco is an avid food tosser! Loves to decorate the walls with it. She also enjoys shredding newpaper into tiny pieces and dropping them over the side of her cage and just watching it float down to the floor..

We have to do a little catching up to see our next object in our part of the galaxy seeing as how it is traveling at 157,838 mph or 254,016 km/h.

We are going to investigate Halley’s Comet today. Yes there was a short note on this comet on Dec. 26th
Halley's Comet is what scientists call a short-period comet. It is the only short-period comet that is clearly visible to the naked eye from Earth and it is the only naked-eye comet that might appear twice in a human’s lifetime. It can be seen going around the Sun once every 75-76 years. The farthest it gets from our Sun is just beyond Pluto. (Yea, that planet that is not a planet.)

Astronomers from at least 240 BCE have recorded this comet. Clear records of the comet's appearances were made by Chinese, Babylonian, and medieval European chroniclers, but were not recognized as reappearances of the same object at the time. The comet's periodicity (time period) was first determined in 1705 by English astronomer Edmond Halley, after whom it is now named. Halley's Comet last appeared in the inner Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid-2061.
Scientists call Halleys a dirty snowball cause it is made up of water ice, CO2, and small rocks and cosmic dust. It only has a tail when it gets close to the sun.

No, the tail is not made of feathers. It is stuff that is blown off the surface of the comets body by the sun. The tail when it forms always faces away from the sun.
Haley’s Comet collects small bits and pieces of dirt and ice in its travels out to, in, & back out of the Oort cloud on its travels. Otherwise it would have disappeared a long time ago.

Every birde settle in, it’s a long way out to Uranus. Who giggled?? 2,870,990,000 km (1,783,331,755 miles, Yes that’s in the billions!) to be exact. There are snacks in the storage bins to munch on.

Uranus, the first planet discovered in modern times, was discovered by William Herschel while systematically searching the sky with his telescope on March 13, 1781.

Uranus has been visited by only one spacecraft, Voyager 2 on Jan 24 1986. At the time of Voyager 2's passage, Uranus' South Pole was pointed almost directly at the Sun. This is the only planet in our solar system to be so inclined.

Like other gas planets, Uranus has rings, 13 of them in fact. The brightest is known as the Epsilon ring.

Like Jupiter's rings they are very dark but like Saturn's they are made up of fairly large particles ranging from 10 meters in diameter down to fine dust.
Uranus has 27 named moons ranging in size from 789 km to only 5 km.
Well it’s a long trip back. We all have time for a nap before we are home.

  Hello Marco
says Ms BB with a heavy heart. I just found out we will be loseing our BC next year. I may be the last Queen for a month. Mr Sky & I may not even be able to get marrird on BC!!!
My Dad for one dos not want to go to FB. It is hard to get around in. And every one would see what we blog about.

For my BOTM campaign I am going to be using my Star Trek Enterprise shuttlecraft, the Galileo, to take us on far-flung adventures. From the very bottom of Earth’s deepest seas to the far reaches of the Universe.

Dec. 18: Ms BBs BOTM campaign.

All of your votes are deeply appreciated. If I don’t thank you every
day its only because there is only so much time in one day.

We wont be getting out of the shuttle today because there will be nowhere to stand.
That is because we will be at the fifth planet from the Sun and by far the largest. Jupiter is more than twice as massive as all the other planets combined (the mass of Jupiter is 318 times that of Earth). It is 142,984 km in diameter & has 16 known moons.
Jupiter takes 12 earth years to go around the sun once. That’s a long time to wait for your hatch day!!

It has a very thick gas atmosphere made up of mostly liquid metallic hydrogen toward the center. The outer atmosphere, that’s what we can see, is made up of water, carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen in their gaseous stage.

Jupiter was first visited by Pioneer 10 in 1973 and later by Pioneer 11, Voyager 1, Voyager 2 and Ulysses. The spacecraft Galileo orbited Jupiter for eight years.
We are now over The Great Red Spot (GRS) It has been seen by Earthly observers for more than 300 years (its discovery is usually attributed to Cassini, or Robert Hooke in the 17th century).

The GRS is an oval about 12,000 by 25,000 km, big enough to hold two Earths. Other smaller but similar spots have been known for decades. Infrared observations and the direction of its rotation indicate that the GRS is a high-pressure region whose cloud tops are significantly higher and colder than the surrounding regions.

In July 1994, Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 collided with Jupiter after breaking apart with spectacular results. The effects were clearly visible even with amateur telescopes.
Jupiter also has high winds that sometimes top 400 mph. Anybirdie want to go fly a kite? We can’t stay here much longer because the shuttles stabilizers are having a hard time with the high winds.

  Hello Marco
We have a Abrims M1A1 tank that Keven brought back with him at the KB now!! WE are trying to decide what kind of maham we want to do!!LOL

Dec. 17: Ms BBs BOTM campaign.

All of your votes are deeply appreciated. If I don’t thank you every day its only because there is only so much time in one day.

Let’s take a moment to eat a light snack. We all know about the next planet out from the Sun because we live on it!!! It is called the third rock from the sun.

So we are on our way to Mars today. All girls to the back of the shuttle so the boys can be up front. It is there planet!!

Mars has a diameter of 6,794 km and is much smaller than earth but has a surface area about the same as the land surface of Earth because of the water covering 70% of the Earth.

Mars (Greek: Ares) is the god of War and is known as the red planet.

The first spacecraft to visit Mars was Mariner 4 in 1965. Several others followed including Mars 2, the first spacecraft to land on Mars and the two Viking landers in 1976. Ending a long 20 year hiatus, Mars Pathfinder landed successfully on Mars on 1997 July 4.

In 2004 the Mars Expedition Rovers "Spirit" and "Opportunity" landed on Mars sending back geologic data and many pictures; they were still operating after more than three years on Mars. In 2008, Phoenix landed in the northern plains to search for water. Three Mars orbiters (Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Odyssey, and Mars Express) are also currently in operation.

While the average temperature is about 218 K (-55 C, -67 F), Martian surface temperatures range widely from as little as -140 K (-133 C, -207 F) at the winter pole to almost 300 K (+27 C, +80 F) on the dayside during summer.

If you look out the right side you can see Olympus Mons. It is the largest mountain volcano in the Solar System rising 24 km (78,000 ft.) above the surrounding plain. Lets put on space suits & go mountain climbing.

On the left side can be seen Hellas Planitia. This is an impact crater in the Southern Hemisphere over 6 km (3.72 miles) deep and 2000 km (1242.74 miles) in diameter. That was a big rock that hit Mars!!!

We should be glad we are not here during one of this planets dust storms. They can go on for days and have high wind speeds. Scientist mostly agree that there is water (ice) under the two polar caps. And there may be some under the vast central plains.

Hay!!! What was that? Did any other birde see that? Come on, raise your wing if you seen it!! It looked like a green Marten to me.

Hi Marco, I see you hiding in that bag
Spotlightlight on Caring--February 6th-Cappy
February 6th SPOTLIGHT on CARING-Cappy part 3
Hello BC friends, Sky here with the conclusion to our interview with my good friend Cappy & his Mom Terri. I wish to take this opportunity to THANK all our dear friends who have stopped by with condolences and floral gifts for our sweet fister RUBY, a Blue Crown Conure who left us last Thursday evening. Your love has helped us through this most difficult time. Now back to the "REST OF THE STORY"
SKY: tell us you did when your where faced with all these health issues on a newly adopted bird?
Terri: We did call the guy we bought him from to let him know that Cappy was very sick and the guy had the gall to ask me why I had taken him to the vet. He did offer to have us return him but I was already committed to Cappy and knew this guy would NOT do what was right by Cappy or his other birds. He wouldn’t entertain the idea of helping with the vet bill. I was so mad I ended up calling the Oklahoma City bird mart and sent out the alarm that I had purchased a very sick bird there. I believe they have since closed the Oklahoma City Bird Marts! I have tried to contact head office about this dealer but never got a response. I sent out the alarm also to local bird clubs that I found online. I was so upset that people out there don’t care one lick for the health and happiness of these beautiful creatures nor do they care about anything other than the almighty dollar. I suspect this dealer continues to sell sick birds but I have sent out messages to everyone I can think of to not buy from him.
Sky: can you give us a few ideas what other problems you then had to work through?
Terri: After Cappy became healthy he started attacking my husband at what seemed like every turn and he had melt down when Rudy would fly by him which resulted in bad bites to my husband. My husband has had his ears pierced twice, his nose pierced once, his eyebrow pierced once and his fingers pretty near shredded on numerous occasions. Please note that we do not generally allow him on the shoulder … he typically launches himself from the arm or lap to your face or just chews away at the fingers. As we watched and tried to figure out what caused these attacks we learned a few things.
Sky: please continue. I know we all are interested in your observations:
Terri: Cappy is a daddy’s boy, he is very attached to my husband and looks for and to him. Cappy had been known to attack women but I have been very lucky in that he hasn’t attacked or hurt me to the extent he has my husband. The old axiom of hurting the one you love the most seems to fit here.

Come visit me, SKY, thank you for Jan 17th, 2016 BOTD & Little Angel.

2) Cappy didn’t like people talking with their hands (he would go into meltdown screaming and attack mode) – We are still working to de-sensitize him to moving hands … we suspect he has been hit in the past and that is the cause for his overreaction.I have tried to make a game with my hand movements so he understands that I am not going to hurt him and now he may even get a little playful with regards to hand movements. Playing peek-a-boo with larger hand movement is one method I have used
3)Cappy doesn’t like to be put in his cage – My husband would get bitten nightly at Cappy’s bedtime …. He just never wanted to be put to bed no matter what time it was. We have to towel him every night and put him in his cage inside the towel and then close the door and reach in and get the towel. That prevents Cappy from biting and he doesn’t get near as worked up about going to bed.
4) Cappy LOVES towels …. Strange as it seems he loves to be toweled and hugged and snuggled. When Cappy starts into a meltdown a towel can calm him down rather quickly, we just towel him, hug him and tell him he is ok and we love him and he settles down …. most of the time we can release him and he will remain calm but sometimes he may not and then we have to put him in his cage for timeout.
As we have learned and implemented the things above Cappy has become much calmer and the bites have subsided a lot …. We still have them now and then but they are not as intense and they are becoming less frequent. Another thing we have learned is that when he is in a meltdown we must remain calm and patient and to reduce our energy as well and that makes a huge difference in how Cappy responds to us.
SKY;Please tell us one or more things you feel are important to share with other bird owners?
Terri: Patience, Love, Understanding, the ability to put yourself in their feathers can go a long way to solving many problems. Bites can be the most difficult thing to endure, because as humans we do take it personally, and bites HURT. But we can learn to understand, respect and prevent future bites to a certain extent. Every bird has their own unique personality and as such they all present different body language that we as humans must learn to read and understand. It can be summed up in the words of my husband’s two co-workers. One said I had to be totally committed to the welfare of our birds and the other said I just needed to be totally committed. One thing that seemed to help my husband deal with Cappy’s biting is the way he viewed it. He used the analogy of getting a 4 year old human child that had been bounced around 4 or 5 different homes in a short period of time and how would that child react and how would you respond.
Sky: Cappy, Mom Terri thank you so much for this very informative interview. I hope we all can gain something from it.
with my heart filled with love,
SKY 224183

Hi MArco, it was great to hear from you!
January 30th SPOTLIGHT on CARING-Cappy part 2
Hi every bird, SKY here with this weeks SPOTLIGHT on CARING Part 2 as we continue our interview with Cappy and his Mom Terri. I'd like to take a moment to ask for continued prayer for Ms Chirps -228922 Momma Rea who was taken to Hospital in Rochester, NY this afternoon. We hope to be able to update you asap. SKY; Please tell us the history of Cappy, and how & when he joined your flock:

Terry; We found Cappy at a bird mart in Oklahoma city while we were hunting for bird toys. A kid of about 8 was walking around with him and he was a snuggle bunny and just wanted to be held and to cuddle. My husband and I handled him and he was so lovable and kept telling us he was a good boy and a good bird. We handled him for about 2-3 hours, then we went to talk to the owner. This guy also had a poor Ekkie who looked horrible and you couldn’t even approach it … probably should have set alarm bells off in my head but I was more attuned to Captain who seemed healthy and happy. Cappy was being sold because he had a history of attacking women… from what we could understand Cappy went from original home, because of bad behavior/biting, and into a exotic sale in Tennessee where the dealer in Oklahoma picked him up for a quick resale. Our vet Tech was also at this particular bird mart and we showed her Cappy. We all felt he was in good health and his feathers looked pretty good other than an awful butcher job for a wing trim.

SKY: I understand that there were a number of very serious issues that came up once Cappy joined your flock. Can you elaborate?

TERRY; The first problem we noticed was within a day of purchase. Cappy was sitting at the bottom of cage and appeared ill so we got him to the vet ASAP. He tested positive for Chlamydia and PBFD. Immediately we removed Dory and Rudy from the home and sent them to a friend until we could figure things out with Cappy. Cappy underwent 10-11 weeks of antibiotic shots in his chest before he was cleared of the Chlamydia. After he was cleared of the Chlamydia we re-tested for PBFD and came back negative so finally after about 12 weeks he was pronounced healthy.
Sky; due to space limits by BC we shall conclude this interview next Wednesday. Thank you Cappy & Mom Terry for sharing your experiences with bringing a new bird into your flock!
with my heart filled with love.
