Blue-and-Gold Macaw

Oranges are pretty good, nuts in the shell especially almonds. Walnuts, extraordinary!

On top of my cage, on the T stand, on the back of mom's chair in the office. On the desk chair in the library watching tv with dad.

No sticks to step up and no hands in the cage! Hate the upright vacuum cleaner!

She just fusses all over me. Wow! Love hanging out with dad on Sundays, he shares all his snacks with me, especially when I tug at his sleeve!

I make a funny vocal sound when I poop!.

I am sunshine on a cloudy day....I open my wings and shine for you! I am your blue bird of happiness!.

  Hi Blue, ♥
OMG. I did not know that Tooth had cancer. We did not know him very well but he was a very nice fellow. Fly Free Tooth.

We also lost a human friend today...Robin Williams passed away also. RIP

Another hot day here, 97º but cloudy and it looked like it might rain. Tomorrow the weather people are saying we are supposed to get thunder showers for the next few days.

Dad is still waiting to find out if he gets his licence or not. The lady said if she gets the info by Wednesday then she would send dad a temporary one so he could race this weekend. Keep your toes crossed for him.

Mom has been working on dad's computer for the last few days as it was running really slow. Mom deleted some un-needed stuff and ran a scan which found some malware and got rid of it. Mom then tried to update his computer to Windows 8.1 but couldn't because there were 120 windows files that needed to be updated first. Mom went on line to figure out how to do it the right way and it took a long time to get it done but now dad has Windows 8.1. It seems to be working fine right now as mom is using it to blog tonight...

Harley is doing good on her food now, mom doesn't know if they make any other flavors or not. Harley is not to have anything other than her Science Diet food. The parronts have asked us not to throw out so much stuff...hehe, they have been really diligent about keeping our floors clean so Harley is out of luck there. When the parronts are having lunch and Harley is waiting for her treat, they give her a couple of nuggets of her food and she seems to be okay with it...she gobbles it down like it was a doggie biscuit. Mom hopes that maybe she'll be able to add some veggies to her food.

So far the PT has caused mom quite a bit of pain. She is trying to do the exercises as much as she can but boy do they hurt a lot... but that is to be expected I think.

How is everything going at your house? Could you remind your mom to send my mom the original files of your first two photos as mom could really use them for pics.

Have a super day, lots of love coming your way, Chica ♥

  Hi sweetie,
sorry that I have not been by in a while but I know you understand.
The flowers are gorgeous...you mom must have a green thumb. The picnic basket is filled with lots of goodies for us to snack on...
We are getting another heat wave here this week. Going to be in the 100s for a while. Got to do any outside work early in the morning as it gets really hot really fast, it is still over 70 and it is almost midnight.

Mom has a sore on the roof of her mouth that really hurts so she is going to see the doctor on Wednesday. Dad also has to see him to get his anti coagulant medicine changed as the NHRA won't let him race on his Warfarin.

Wing hugs and love, Chica ♥

mom needed a shot in her shoulder again as it was really bothering her. The last one she had was in October 2013. It seemed like it was working but unfortunately, mom was in quite a lot of pain last night and again today. She also felt "off" today, like maybe she had a small reaction to the shot...Mom is hoping that it is just a small set back and that she'll feel much better tomorrow. She is a little worried that things might be worse in her shoulder this time.

Another HOT day here, it was up around that nasty 100 mark again...Harley doesn't like going out when it is so hot, she insists that we keep her company. This is all dad's fault as he is the one who started this new routine...lol

We love watching the birdies eating at the feeder, mom hopes that one day she can sit out on the deck while they eat...they fly away when she opens the door to go out...

Did you ask your mom to send my mom your pictures? Even if she posted them to FB mom could grab them there. They are such great pics of you...

The lake is beautiful and look at all the ducks enjoying the water...I have a picnic basket so lets sit here and see what mom packed for us...

  Hi Blue
We are trying to enjoy the summer. But, the weather isn't cooperating very well!
Well, the parronts made another trip to see a polo match ... no luck again. Mom talked to one of the riders and he said the field was fine. Maybe they will play on Thursday and Friday. They have to get in 3 matches before the other team and referees leave on Sunday. It was 68 degrees today and should be 72 tomorrow. I hope to get some patio time!
As for the court case about Ozzi, even her parronts haven't heard the outcome today. One of the boys mom's was on FB complaining that the boys are being harassed. I hope we can get an updated new law ... Ozzi's Law.
Hugs

How are you doing? Haven't heard from you in ages.
Another dark and rainy day today. So, I had to play inside. At least I had my favorite breakfast of scrambled eggs. Mom's window's 8 did an upgrade and now she is missing things. It will take a while to find them again as they changed everything around ... I'm thinking that i5 is behind this ... hehehe.
Let's all hope that everything goes well for Ozzi's family. Wednesday is the court date.

  Hi Blue
Hello Everybirdie
Today we kick off my month of July BOTM run with a special celebration. It's Canada Day here with all the food, fun, family and firework displays. I hate fireworks, too noisy, but being a Macaw I'm always up for some food, and fun. I want to begin this month by telling you a little bit about myself. Most of you already know my handsome frother SKY, my mischievous fister Little Angel and my adventurous frother Casey, but some may not know me birdsonally.
I joined the Sky Flock in 2013. It was Easter weekend when Momma Deb received the call from my former owner to "come today and get her PLEASE!!!!!" I am sure glad that Momma Deb did, because it was the best thing that happened to me in a long while. I had lived with my first owners for 13-14 years but it became necessary to rehome me and I was sold to a lady who had a whole house full of very large, very aggressive Pitbulls and Rottweilers. I never left my cage and spent a whole year and some living in fear of being attacked by the dogs. I thought things were going to get better when once more I was resold. The lady who bought me had two large dogs who constantly barked and growled at me. I was so stressed I began to pluck some of my feathers out and I never spoke, and hadn't in 2 1/2 years.
It was my best day when Momma Deb arrived to take me away from there. I'd only been there a short while but I was relieved to be going somewhere I hoped would be better. I am very happy here at the Sky Flock, I get out of my cage all the time and love to yell at the other birds to be quiet. Momma Deb discovered I have a rather extensive vocabulary and know how to count to sixteen, and know a number of songs as well.
Enough about me. Let's get our suitcases, cameras and sunscreen ready as we begin our trip to every corner of the world. We will visit some very rare and endangered species, learn about some interesting and unusual birds, and my favorite take a look at some of the awesome mutations showing up around the planet of some of our most common feathered friends.
I will see every one tomorrow.
with love and scritches

  Hi Blue ♥
we had some nice sunshine here today so mom went outside and did some light gardening. She trimmed all of her roses in the front garden and did some in the back garden as well. She tried to fix the sprinklers as they seem to want to come on at 5 pm but they come on at 4 in the morning. She printed out the manual and it seems like she has it programmed right so we will see tomorrow.

The parronts are going out to do the grocery shopping tomorrow so that dad can focus on loading the trailer and making sure the bike is ready. They will be leaving pretty early on Saturday.

Wing hugs and love, Chica

the baby robins fledged and have flown off to begin their life as robins. It was super interesting watching the whole process from the very beginning. Mom did post some pics on FB that should still be there on her home page if you want to see. The youngest robin stayed around in the yard for a few days and he hung out in our trees so mom got some pics of him in our trees. Momma robin was still feeding him until he was ready to fly off on his own adventures...

Mom found a couple of Web cams in our area following some baby ducks and baby kestrels. They were talked about in our local paper so mom went there to watch the babies. The little duckies are so cute. I didn't know that mamma duck won't feed the babies while they are in the nest so they will jump out of the nest.

Guess what? Mom thinks another robin is thinking about building her nest on our pergola a few feet from where the other robin had built her nest. Mom took the nest down as it seems that robins won't reuse a nest...Update, this morning the robin started to build a nest in the exact same spot where the old nest was...mom is keeping fingers crossed...

Another pretty warm day here around 85º, mom is going to trim her roses in the front garden tomorrow morning as they are so heavy with flowers that they have fallen down and don't look so good now.
Mom bought a bird feeder today to put out in the back yard to hopefully attract some wild birds. She also got a new humming bird feeder and she made the nectar for it...she will put it up tomorrow am when it is not as hot outside...

That Squawk page hits us everynight now...we couldn't get this note to you last night as BC wouldn't load it...heres hoping it goes through today...

Hugs and Kisses, love Chica ♥

  Hi Blue ♥
we are the god parents of three baby robins.

We had a wonderful day, did get kind of warm this afternoon. Mom and dad saw a momma squirrel and her baby this afternoon. They crossed in front of our house to get to our fence, they they walked all along it and ended up crossing our back yard on it. I think that mom was taking baby back to where they live in a big pine tree.
Mom is pretty happy seeing baby robins and a baby squirrel...She is loving our backyard a lot. She is enjoying going all around the garden taking care of the flowers now. Her peonies are just starting to bloom and her tiger lily has about three blossoms with lots more to come...

Chica gives Blue a hug and a kiss and tells him how sorry she is to hear that Captain Darling flew to the Rainbow Bridge...

Chica grabs Blue's wing and away they gooooo to celebrate with Simon...

Mom hopes that California Chrome wins the Preakness on Saturday, she'd love to see a triple crown this year besides California Chrome is quite the story...

Dad has been working around the outside of the house doing some touch up painting. Mom has been taking care of her flowers. They are all doing great...the rodies are blooming and her roses are starting to bloom as well.

Mrs. Robin seems to be doing just great...not sure but think her babies might of hatched. We can't see in the nest but guessing there are babies by the way she is acting...dad wants to climb up a ladder and see but mom is not sure it is a good idea since Mrs. Robin never goes far or is gone for long...don't want her to not continue to care for babies.

We have been having great weather here but today it got kind of hot for this time of year but it is supposed to be cooler for the weekend.

mom's ribs are feeling much better and only hurt when she moves wrong. Sorry to hear that your mom is still in pain over her wrist injury.
The smiling doggie is Harley our maxi pin, she is a bit overweight...lol She is sitting in the sunroom with mom, she wants to be everywhere mom is. Definitely a mommy's girl...hehe Napoleon whistles and calls Harley by name but Harley has him figured out and ignores him...

I think the Derby was so much fun, the race was very exciting to watch. I was hoping for Jewels and Gemologist would win but at least she finished fourth. I enjoyed being there with you so much...being with you makes me happy.

Mom has had dad working around the house and in the garden and he told her he doesn't want to here the words "I've been thinking" again as that means work for dad...lol
Mom had dad plant some geraniums and another rose this weekend and put together a shelving unit for the gardening shed so all gardening equipment and stuff can be stored there instead of in the garage. Mom helped of course...

Wing hugs and a kiss and love...your Chica...

thank you for the beautiful flowers, I put them on the counter right next my house. The colors are so pretty just like us. Thanks for the hatchday wishes...I had a pretty good day.

Dad wasn't able to race at all on Saturday, it was way to cold and windy. It did clear up later but by then it was to late to bring the bike out for only maybe one run and besides a lot of the cars were still having troubles getting down the track. Dad always errs on the side of safety.

The men were here to install our new A/C unit today, it is quite a bit bigger in size than the old one. They had to remove the door to get it through the door. It is all installed but they are doing a negative pressure test to make sure there are no leaks. They will be back tomorrow morning to finish up. The weather has been cooperating with us so far, it is nice but we can keep cool by just opening some windows. At least we are saving some electricity by not using it...lol

Mrs. Robin is doing well, she is acting like she is sitting on eggs now. She only leaves for a few minutes at a time. She also stands on the side of the nest and turns the eggs with her beak so that they embryo doesn't stick to the side of the egg. (mom was reading all about it) Mr. Robin hangs out nearby most of the time. I can't remember when she probably laid them but the incubation time is 12-14 days so babies could be coming soon. That is exciting.

Mom's ribs are still hurting but are a bit better now, just going to take time for them to heal.

Wing hugs and love, your Sweetbeak Chica ♥

and Stark flock ...
I had a better day today. But, I still have a long way to go. I finally ate a late lunch and dinner of scrambled eggs. I hope to do better tomorrow. I squawked a few times today. But, have been quiet since late afternoon. I am in my condo tonight. But, it’s just a try. I may have to sleep in my Wingabago again (didn’t like that). No playing with my toys I’m just not interested. The big two day derby party is here … mom says I can wear my derby hat with my jammies. But, I have to rest.
This is my last blog until Sunday night. If there are any updates and/or changes, I will let Falco’s mom, Aunt Arlene know. Please keep me in your prayers. Thanks.

it was a beautiful day here today and sure think that spring has sprung...sorry that your weather is not thinking spring yet for you. That would be cool to see wild animals, the wildest we get are squirrels and birdies...
We do have a robin who built a really nice nest on our pergola and today she sat in there almost the whole day. Usually, she works on it for a while and then leaves and goes who knows where but not today. Mom thinks that she laid some eggs today but we will have to wait and see. Mom hopes that she did and we will get to watch baby robins grow. It is right outside of the kitchen window so mom has a great view and also she has a great view from the sunroom. Mom is posting some pics in my gallery and she is putting a pic she took today of Harley sitting on the loveseat in the sunroom while mom was taking pics of the robin and her nest...
Feel free to snag the picture of you and me at the derby if you like. Jewels also has a picture of her and Charlie at the derby in her gallery for him as well.

  Hi Blue ♥
Mrs Robin was back again today and this time she has actually got a good nest started, hopefully, it will be able to withstand the winds...keeping toes crossed. Mom managed to get a couple of pics of her building her nest. There are a couple of Robin pics in my gallery but mom posted more garden photos on FB. It was nice enough out for a while so dad took advantage and planted mom's three mini roses. He figured the ground would be fairly soft because of the rain that we have had and he was right. They should look beautiful this summer. Mom is very happy with the garden and backyard so far this year.

Mom posted a couple of pics of a Seahawks photo taken at SB48...dad found it and bought it for mom cause he knows how much she loves the Hawks...

Chica blushes when Blue tells her how beautiful she looks...

It must have been very hard to say goodbye again...but as you said...closure.
It is exciting to bring a new babbie home.

Yesterday was cold, windy and it haad rained all night. The parronts had to go out for dad's appointment to get his blood checked...he did great, his numbers were right where they were supposed to be so that was awesome...After that, they went to the nursery and picked up three mini roses for the back yard...mom is happy with the roses...one is a very pretty yellow, one is a vibrant orange, and the last one is a multi colored one called tiddly winks...
Today was cold and semi rainy along with the wind again so mom didn't go out until they went out for dinner...

Jewels will do the best she can, she'd love to win.

Harley loves it out there in the garden especially when mom is out there too. The parronts are happy with the way the garden is shaping up, the grass is getting greener and mom's plants are doing well. The fountain is the perfect height for Harley to get a drink. The water is clean so it is fine for her to drink. Nice clear running water and a big back yard to play in...what more can a doggie want?

Beautiful day, dad is almost finished his painting project around the sunroom. He did hang two planters on the pergola so now mom needs to get some more flowers for them. Mom transplanted the big pansy to a bigger pot, it had outgrown the fish planter. She sure hopes that it survives. Mom is so happy that her peonies seem to be doing very well, she wasn't sure if they would come back this year or not.

Happy Easter to you and your family as well.

I am not surprised that you managed to snag your mom's goggles...I would have done the same...

Would you mind if mom makes us a picture for the Derby?

Boo Boo announces before Coris speech that they woke up to a dusting of snow this morning and then she wishes all the birds a lovely day.
Many of the birds inhabiting the south american rainforest depend on old growth forests for their winter stay before migrating north in the spring. the deforestation and destruction of the rain forests are wrecking havoc on migratory birds. while in the north migratory birds might live entirely on insects upon arrival of the old growth forests they will depend entirely on fruits to sustain them. logging for timber by cutting down old growth tress plus the fragmentation of the forests by the oil and gas companies by drilling and fracking are causing an alarming decrease in bird populations. this hasn't even covered the topic of all the toxic spills that have occurred polluting fresh drinking sources and polluting the air. I’m sorry to say the latest news from Galveston Texas is not good.
The slick caused by the recent toxic spill in the Gulf of Mexico is drifting toward Chester’s Island, a critical bird habitat in Matagorda Bay. The island hosts tens of thousands of breeding waterbirds each year. This crisis is far from over.
thats why i would like to talk today about trees and their importance.
THE VALUE AMOUNT OF A TREE IS $193,250. according to Professor T.M.Dass of the university of Calcutta. One tree living 50 years will generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, control soil erosion and increase soil fertility to the tune of $31,250 recycle $37,500 worth of water and provide a home for animals worth $31,250. this of course does not include the value of the fruits or beauty derived from trees.

Ravens have inspired a large body of folklore and legend which is not entirely negative. i would like to concentrate on the more positive tales . for a good laugh you can google the Raven saying Never More Never more WHACKA WHACKA WHACKA on u-tube.

the vikings worshipped and revered ravens and its image was carried on all their banners and shields. since ravens had the power of human speech they were thought to fly all over the world everyday returning at night to tell of what they had seen and heard. the irish phrase"ravens knowledge" applies to anyone who appears to see and know all. in europe the raven was considered a mystical and magical bird. Alexander the Great was said to have been guided across the desert by two ravens sent from heaven. in Briton legend maintains that England will not fall as long as Ravens remain in the tower of London.

the raven was connected with the creation of the world by american indians who made people out of a rock and a leaf. the raven showed the leaf to the people and said "see this leaf" you are to be like it. when the leaf falls from the branch and rots there is nothing left. thus the raven also brought death to the world. one indian tribe believed he raven was a mythical ancestor of their tribe and performed many wonderful deeds at the beginning of the world. one such deed was determining the particular task a bird should perform, where they should live and what their color should be. for instance the American Robin was was to give pleasure to man through its beauty. all birds were told to dress differently so they could recognize each other. the Blue-Jay was told to pie its hair high and tie it with a string. the magical Raven could transform itself into whatever shape it chose and remove its feathers like a coat. as a spirit of creation he had not beginning or no end.

Cori decides to do something a little different today and tells Boo Boo to take a seat with the rest of the bird audience because today she is talking about Blue Jays. Boo Boo clapped her wings with glee upon hearing this and listens intently to Cori.

noisy and fearless and found throughout the eastern united states and canada but also extending westward and sometimes spotted in western states. there are a few legends that blue jays have acquired over the years. southerners say Blue Jays were yoked to a plow by a sparrow and the mark left by the ole can still be seen on the blue jays breast.
the Cherokee indianas suggest that if find a blue jay feather, soak it in water and then gently brush a childs eye with it, the child will become an wary riser. this will not work if the feather is taken from the bird, it must be found on the ground.
indians from the hudson bay area believe the Canadian jay crowed out a warning whenever the tried to sneak up on a Eskimo camp and for this reason the indians often killed the Canada Jay
because Blue Jays do not always retrieve all of the acorns and other seeds they bury in the fall, they are friends to the forest by "planting" new seeds.
around the time automobiles became common, a Jaywalker meant a rustic bumpkin who didn't look where he was going and a "Jay" often referred to a silly person perhaps because they were considered vain about their gaudy plumage.

the 300 species of Hummingbirds feed mainly on red tubular flowers with a long beak with an even longer tongue that laps up the nectar. they also eat small insects that live near the flowers like spiders ,beetles, ants aphids and gnats. these small flying gems are anything but cowardly, unafraid of humans and battle furiously among themselves defending their territory.observing this, aztec warriors believed they would be reincarnated as hummingbirds upon death in battle. they also believed the hummingbird was one of the original creators of the universe.
in one mayan legend the great god was busy making different kinds of birds for the world. when he was finished he found a tiny pile of scraps left over and not wanting to waste anything decided to make the tiniest bird of all. after making a pair of hummingbirds he called all the birds together to celebrate. many birds brought gifts. the house finch gave red feathers for the male to make a scarf, which the male then gave 1 or 2 of these feathers to the female. the sun gave a present also and shone down on the couple making their feathers gleam and sparkle like gold and jewels. since that time hummingbirds feathers glow with an iridescence in the sun.
indians of the american south west considered hummingbirds to be bringers of rain. it was felt the little hummer had a direct connection to the god of rain and would bring much needed water to this region. water jars were decorated with paintings of hummers. Hopi and Zuni tribes include the hummingbird in their ceremonial rain dances

Boo Boo does the HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before Coris speech:
the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds in the northeastern united states. one early naturalist felt the birds rapidly beating wings sounded like a bumble bee and named it the Humbird. the Ruby-Throated migrates from South America to southern canada flying non-stop , 500 miles, across the Gulf of Mexico.in the western united states the Rufous Hummingbird ranges farther north than any other hummingbird going as far as southern Alaska. the Annas Hummingbird resides in California wandering sometimes into Arizona and along the Rockies north into Canada . a popular myth was that the Hummingbirds must be hitchhiking a ride on larger birds to be able to travel such long distances.

hummingbirds have almost the highest metabolism of any warm blooded mammal and feed almost continuously often becoming torpid at night to preserve their energy. the female laying on her eggs doesn't have the luxury of lowering her metabolism at night since she must keep her 2 eggs warm. the intricately woven nest made up of spider web silk seems to protect her and her eggs from the cold.
in one Mayan legend birds who asked a tribal wiseman how to build a sturdy nest were sent to the hummingbirds for instructions.

Boo Boo makes Cori gargle with cepacol before her speech today and then makes her spit it out into a little brass spittoon.

A Hummingbird rarely makes any sound other than the faint :hum of its beating wings and will make a high pitched chirping sound when angry. the reason a legend says is greed. the Hummingbirds extensible tongue allows it to reach deep into a flower to obtain nectar. according to legend the Hummingbird swallowed too much nectar at one time and lost its voice in the flower. that is why the Hummingbird dashes from bloom to bloom so swiftly- it is searching for its lost voice. another legend states that the Hummingbird hibernates instead of migrating. written in a old book of folklore "Hummingbirds live by the dew and juice of flowers. they die or sleep every year in the month of october, sitting upon a a little bough, in a warm and close place. the wake in the middle of april, after the flowers be sprung and therefore call themselves the revived birds.

perhaps one day the Hummingbird will find its lots voice in a flower and the sound will be lovely to hear.

Boo Boo stands in front of the audience on this monday and gives a small introduction before Cori's campaign speech. since everybody is anxiously waiting for spring we thought we would end our campaign week talking about Hummingbirds, for when they return to the colder regions spring must be here even if it doesn't feel like it.

When the pilgrims stepped ashore in Massachusetts in 1620 the indian chiefs who greeted them wore strange, small glittering ornaments in their ears-they were stuffed hummingbirds. Cortez, the spanish conquistador was astonished when he met Montezuma in Mexico, to see that the Aztec emperor and nobles of the court were arrayed in long coats that shone brilliantly when the sun struck them. when such a cloak was presented to Cortez, he was amazed to find it made entirely of hundreds of hummingbird skins.

hummingbirds, the smallest of all birds(the Bee Hummingbird from Cuba is the size of a bumblebee) have almost been completely obliterated from the earth several times. somehow they managed to survive. in the 19th century it was fashionable to decorate ladies hats with them and millions were killed for it. in 1860 more than 500,000 hummingbird skins were auctioned in london. eventually laws were passed in the united states and london making it illegal to trade in hummingbird skins plus fashions changed so hummingbirds slowly made a recovery considering they only lay 2 small pearl sized eggs a year and are the prey of larger birds and squirrels. the destruction of their forests where they make their nests and pesticides are are now increasingly taking their toll on the tiny "jewels of the sky"

found mostly in the old world, the Kingfisher is a bright jewel of a bird who skims over the water in a flash of blue and orange, dicing for small fish, crayfish, frogs and insects.its eyes have oval lenses enabling it to see well in the air as well as underwater. wearing the Kingfishers feathers was believed to heighten the wearers beauty.in britton it was believed the bird could glow in the dark. it was believed that the Kingfisher was originally a dull colored bird but Noah releases the Kingfisher from his arc in order to find land. after being confined for so long the bird flew up to the sky until it took on the blue color of the heavens. then it flew so close to the sun its breast was scorched so it was forced to dive into the water below . at this point it remembered it was suppose to find land and went in search of the ark but could no longer find it since Noah had long since landed on Mt Arafat. this is why the Kingfisher continues to this day flying along rivers calling out to Noah. it was also believed that upon death the birds did not decay so their bodies were placed among clothes to preserve them. whoever owned dead Kingfisher would be granted grace and loveliness by wearing its feathers. plucking feathers from a Kingfisher and throwing them in water, then retrieving only the feathers that floated and stroking a loved one with them was considered a powerful love talismans. dead Kingfishers hung up by their beaks with a thread foretold the direction the wind would blow by which direction their breast faced.

The dove has always been a symbol of peace and love since earliest recorded times. the dove served as a symbol for aphridite as the symbol of love, being both affectionate (hence the term loveydovey) and sexually active. aphrodite was believed to have been hatched from a doves egg and brought ashore by fish. in syria the goddess astarte was saved from starvation in the desert by doves who fed her milk and cheese and turned her into a dove on her death. a dove was sent from the ark by Noah in christian religion to check on whether the flood waters were receding. when the dove returned with a sprig of olive branch in its beak Noah knew god had forgiven mankind. in christian religion the dove is the symbol of the holy ghost. in the middle east the dove is held as sacred when a ruler who was killed in battle hd 2 doves fly from his heart. it was also believed any bird of prey who killed a dove would drop dead. in japan doves were believed to be messengers of war rather than symbols of peace when he was saved from discovery while hiding in a tree by two doves that flew out and convinced the enemy the tree was hiding nope. in italy russia and germany it was considered sin to kill a dove. while in the channel islands it was considered unlucky to keep pet doves which would cause a difficult marriage

Named for the striking yellow tufts that grow above its eyes during breeding season, the tufted puffin is one of the most loved birds in North America. The tufted puffin’s striking breeding season coloration has earned it such names as “sea parrot” and “clown of the sea.” With its short wings that allow it to swim expertly underwater, the tufted puffin dives for prey along coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington where populations of this seabird, as well as in Japan, are in trouble, as lack of prey, climate change, fishing, oil spills, and other dangers take their toll. Tufted puffins are able to dive up to 60 meters to catch small fish like sardines, herring, and anchovy and may make as many as 360 dives per day when foraging to feed their chicks. Breeding populations of tufted puffins in California, Oregon, and Washington have declined by 85 to 90 percent in the last three decades, from more than 30,000 birds to no more than 4000 today. Most of these remaining puffins are in Washington. Oregon and California are each estimated to have breeding populations of less than 300 birds. The population in Japan is down to ten breeding pairs. Tufted puffins are still numerous in Alaska and British Columbia. But the more southern populations that are in steep decline encompass a significant portion of the species’ historic range and contain genetic diversity that is important to maintain if the species is to persist in the long-term, particularly with impacts from climate change escalating. humans are the cause of the tufted puffin’s plight. Climate change, driven by our burning of fossil fuels, is altering temperatures and circulation patterns of our oceans, disrupting the food web and making it harder for puffins to forage and to successfully reproduce. Puffins are also caught as bycatch in commercial fishing nets, drowning underwater when they cannot surface for air.
Diving for food and roosting on the surface of the water makes the tufted puffin highly vulnerable to impacts from oil spills. A single oil spill can wipe out entire breeding colonies. In fact, in 1991, the Tenyo Maru oil spill off the coast of Washington killed about 10 percent of the state’s population of tufted puffins. Similarly, the Exxon Valdez spill was responsible for the death of up to 13,000 Alaskan tufted puffins in 1989.
To compound the problem, tufted puffins generally return to the same colony each year and even if any birds were tempted to stray, breeding colonies in the contiguous United States are physically separated from other breeding colonies to the north. This has made recovery very difficult as population numbers dwindle. In recent years,

Cori and Boo Boo both do a short HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before the presentation!

people have always been fascinated by the huge migrating flocks of Cranes. it was believed that Cranes carried small birds on their backs during their migratory travels over large bodies of water. it was believed the reason the Crances did this was that they enjoyed listening to the songs of the small birds.. this belief was held by the egyptians, the bedouins and the the Crow indians.the arawak indians pf venezuela believed tobacco was brought to them by a hummingbird who stole it from triniada and rode on the back of a crane to bring it to south america. it was believed that cranes swallowed stones to keep the wind from blowing them off course during their long migratory flights. upon arrival they would expel the stones. the stones were said to hold magical powers. if one held the stone they would find gold. also the stones were said to warn of impending danger.

The Whooping Crane is named for its call, which can be heard over great distances thanks to the bird’s extra-long trachea, which coils around its breastbone twice like a French horn. Like other cranes, the Whooper is noisy; the word “crane” comes from the Anglo-Saxon "cran," which means "to cry out."
The tallest flying bird in North America, Whooping Cranes measure up to five feet tall with a seven-to eight-foot wingspan. The species also has another distinction: It is the rarest crane in the world. Several decades ago, it almost disappeared forever due to habitat loss and hunting.
Still extremely rare, Whooping Cranes are on the WatchList and protected as an endangered species. Sadly, up to one-quarter of all Whoopers are shot and killed.
Whooping Cranes are one of our country’s most majestic birds—and also one of our most endangered. Though the species once ranged throughout the Great Plains and Gulf Coast regions, the Whooping Crane population was decimated by hunting and habitat loss, and only 16 birds remained in 1941.
Today, a major captive-breeding effort has helped the population rebound to nearly 600 individuals. But these birds are still under threat. A mated pair of Whooping Cranes was recently shot at a crawfish pond in Louisiana. Sadly, both have died from their injuries. Still worse, this is not unusual: Nearly one-quarter of all Whooping Crane deaths are caused by illegal shooting.
Whooping Cranes deserve the full protection of the law.

St. Patrick's day is a feast celebrated yearly on March 17 (except when it lands on Catholic spiritual holidays). St. Patrick, aka St. Paddy, is the patron saint of Ireland and is celebrated by wearing green, drinking green beer (usually Guiness, but sometimes substituted with Irish whiskey or Baileys Irish cream), and eating Irish food. Traditionally, those who don't wear green are pinched on St. Patrick's day.

Cori starts playing an irish tune on her fiddle as Boo Boo , wearing heavy boots, does some Irish step dancing before Cori begins her speech for today:

An irish saint, similar to /saint francis of assisi called /st Kevin(498-618) was said to prefer the company of animals over humans and was said to have a mystical command over them. once when he was praying during lent, a blackbird landed on his outstretched hand and laid an egg there. St Kevin then remained perfectly still until the egg had hatched- an illustration of the saints virtuous patience and gentleness.
there is a saying from the county meath in ireland "when the blackbird sings before christmas, she will cry before Candlemas" This meant if the blackbird started signing before its usual time of early to mid february a cold spell will occur before february 2, when the rite of candlemas is observed. in germany it was thought a blackbird kept caged in a house offered protection against lightning.

thankyou for helping me win the honor of BOTD!

Boo Boo tosses 4 leaf clovers out to the bird e club audience before Cori begins her speech.

What is “The Ideas of March?” The Romans called March 15th “The Ides of March.” Originally, the “ideas” referred to the full moon.Ides were days of settling debts

What does “Beware the Ides of March” mean? It means, be aware of impending danger.

The saying, “Beware the Ides of March” came from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. In the play, a soothsayer says “Beware the Ideas of March” to Julius Caesar to warn him that this was to be his assassination day.

Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44BC by Roman Senators who were concerned that he had too much power. Rome was a Republic and these Roman Senators did not want anyone to disrupt what they had built. However, after Julius Caesar’s assassination, Rome was saddened by his death. The senators were banished and the republic was never restored to its previous glory.

“Beware the Ides of March” is now a proverb, superstition and a phrase that warns of impending danger and unfortunate events.

A proverb is a saying that contains advice or accepted truth. They are passed down through generations. Common proverbs are; “Look before you leap,” “don’t count your chickens before they hatch” and “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

A superstition is a belief that a particular thing, event or circumstance holds some kind of significance that something going to happen (bad or good) even though it’s not based on knowledge or reason. This belief can be based on fear, ignorance, trust in magic, coincidence, or a prior experience with a similar situation. Some common superstitions are; breaking a mirror can cause bad luck, finding a 4-leaf clover can bring good luck, stepping on a crack in the sidewalk can “break your mother’s back” or cause bad luck, the number 13 can bring you bad luck, and finding a string on your person means your going to get a letter.

BooBoo does a short irish jig before Coris speech.
the irish peasants attached great importance to the first verse of St John gospel and maintain that when a cock crows in the morning he is repeating verse 1-14 and if we understood the language of animals and birds we would often hear them quoting the same verses.

a flight of rooks over an army foretells defeat, if over a house or people when driving or walking , death ail follow.

if a hen crows on the roost it is a sure sign that fairies have struck it and its head must be cut off and flung on the ground or one of the family will die before the year is out.

never disturb swallows where ever they may build and neither remove or destroy their nests for they are wise birds and will mark your conduct either with punishment or favor.

if you hear a cuckoo on the right you will have luck all the year after.

it is very lucky for a hen and her chickens to stray into your house

if anyone in the house is sick and a cock crows with his head to the fire recovery is expected. if he crows with his head to the door then death be certain.

in whatever quarter you are looking when you first hear the cockoo in the season, you will be traveling in that direction before the year is over.

if a cock comes to the threshold and crows you may expect visitors

the cuttings of your hair must never be thrown where birds can find them or they will use your head to build nests and you will have headaches all the year after.

BEWARE OF SPEAKING ILL OF FAIRIES ON FRIDAY OR THEY WILL WORK EVIL ON YOU IF OFFENDED.

there is no irish name for the Magpie. it is generally called Francagh, a Frenchman, though no one really knows why. many odd tales are told of this bird, rising from its quaint ways of its cunning and habits of petty larceny. it is not considered evil, though to meet one alone in the morning when going on a journey is considered a evil omen, but to meet more than one magpie beacons good fortune according to this old rhyme:

TWO FOR MIRTH
THREE FOR MARRIAGE
FOUR FOR BIRTH
FIVE FOR HEAVEN
SIX FOR HELL
SEVEN's THE DEVILS his own self

TWELVE FOR WEALTH
THIRTEEN BEWARE its the devil himself
another similar poem is:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR JOY
THREE FOR A GIRL
FOUR FOR A BOY
FIVE FOR SILVER
SIX FOR GOLD
SEVEN FOR A SECRET NEVER TO BE TOLD
seeing three Magpies on the left hand, when on a journey is unlucky, but two on the right hand is a good omen
in scotland it was believed that the bird held a drop of the devil under its tongue

A SINGLE MAGPIE IN SPRING FOUL WEATHER WILL BRING from the birds habit of feeding together only in fine weather.
if you see a solitary Magpie you can ward off bad luck by spitting over your shoulder three times doffing your hat and saying GOOD MORNING MR MAGPIE, HOW ARE YOU THIS FINE DAY or GOOD DAY, HOW IS YOUR WIFE? in hopes the Magpies mate is hiding nearby to turn your sorrow into joy.
