Jewels will do the best she can, she'd love to win.

Harley loves it out there in the garden especially when mom is out there too. The parronts are happy with the way the garden is shaping up, the grass is getting greener and mom's plants are doing well. The fountain is the perfect height for Harley to get a drink. The water is clean so it is fine for her to drink. Nice clear running water and a big back yard to play in...what more can a doggie want?

Beautiful day, dad is almost finished his painting project around the sunroom. He did hang two planters on the pergola so now mom needs to get some more flowers for them. Mom transplanted the big pansy to a bigger pot, it had outgrown the fish planter. She sure hopes that it survives. Mom is so happy that her peonies seem to be doing very well, she wasn't sure if they would come back this year or not.

Happy Easter to you and your family as well.

I am not surprised that you managed to snag your mom's goggles...I would have done the same...

Would you mind if mom makes us a picture for the Derby?

Wing hugs and love, Chica ♥

Boo Boo announces before Coris speech that they woke up to a dusting of snow this morning and then she wishes all the birds a lovely day.
Many of the birds inhabiting the south american rainforest depend on old growth forests for their winter stay before migrating north in the spring. the deforestation and destruction of the rain forests are wrecking havoc on migratory birds. while in the north migratory birds might live entirely on insects upon arrival of the old growth forests they will depend entirely on fruits to sustain them. logging for timber by cutting down old growth tress plus the fragmentation of the forests by the oil and gas companies by drilling and fracking are causing an alarming decrease in bird populations. this hasn't even covered the topic of all the toxic spills that have occurred polluting fresh drinking sources and polluting the air. I’m sorry to say the latest news from Galveston Texas is not good.
The slick caused by the recent toxic spill in the Gulf of Mexico is drifting toward Chester’s Island, a critical bird habitat in Matagorda Bay. The island hosts tens of thousands of breeding waterbirds each year. This crisis is far from over.
thats why i would like to talk today about trees and their importance.
THE VALUE AMOUNT OF A TREE IS $193,250. according to Professor T.M.Dass of the university of Calcutta. One tree living 50 years will generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, control soil erosion and increase soil fertility to the tune of $31,250 recycle $37,500 worth of water and provide a home for animals worth $31,250. this of course does not include the value of the fruits or beauty derived from trees.

I am so sorry that your mom is not recovering well from her eye surgery. What do her goggles look like? That is good that Doo was not scared of her when she is wearing them. Is she not supposed to have you guys out. We will keep your mom in our thoughts and prayers that her incisions heal well and that there is no rejection...

Of course, I will be with you at the Milonga and I know Jewels will too.

Well, luckily the weather guessers were wrong today and it was a beautiful sunshiney day. Mom was outside again for a little while until it got to windy for her. The sunroom was awesome as well.

The Milonga was fun tonight...loved the apple bobbing in the green jello...

Ravens have inspired a large body of folklore and legend which is not entirely negative. i would like to concentrate on the more positive tales . for a good laugh you can google the Raven saying Never More Never more WHACKA WHACKA WHACKA on u-tube.

the vikings worshipped and revered ravens and its image was carried on all their banners and shields. since ravens had the power of human speech they were thought to fly all over the world everyday returning at night to tell of what they had seen and heard. the irish phrase"ravens knowledge" applies to anyone who appears to see and know all. in europe the raven was considered a mystical and magical bird. Alexander the Great was said to have been guided across the desert by two ravens sent from heaven. in Briton legend maintains that England will not fall as long as Ravens remain in the tower of London.

the raven was connected with the creation of the world by american indians who made people out of a rock and a leaf. the raven showed the leaf to the people and said "see this leaf" you are to be like it. when the leaf falls from the branch and rots there is nothing left. thus the raven also brought death to the world. one indian tribe believed he raven was a mythical ancestor of their tribe and performed many wonderful deeds at the beginning of the world. one such deed was determining the particular task a bird should perform, where they should live and what their color should be. for instance the American Robin was was to give pleasure to man through its beauty. all birds were told to dress differently so they could recognize each other. the Blue-Jay was told to pie its hair high and tie it with a string. the magical Raven could transform itself into whatever shape it chose and remove its feathers like a coat. as a spirit of creation he had not beginning or no end.

Cori decides to do something a little different today and tells Boo Boo to take a seat with the rest of the bird audience because today she is talking about Blue Jays. Boo Boo clapped her wings with glee upon hearing this and listens intently to Cori.

noisy and fearless and found throughout the eastern united states and canada but also extending westward and sometimes spotted in western states. there are a few legends that blue jays have acquired over the years. southerners say Blue Jays were yoked to a plow by a sparrow and the mark left by the ole can still be seen on the blue jays breast.
the Cherokee indianas suggest that if find a blue jay feather, soak it in water and then gently brush a childs eye with it, the child will become an wary riser. this will not work if the feather is taken from the bird, it must be found on the ground.
indians from the hudson bay area believe the Canadian jay crowed out a warning whenever the tried to sneak up on a Eskimo camp and for this reason the indians often killed the Canada Jay
because Blue Jays do not always retrieve all of the acorns and other seeds they bury in the fall, they are friends to the forest by "planting" new seeds.
around the time automobiles became common, a Jaywalker meant a rustic bumpkin who didn't look where he was going and a "Jay" often referred to a silly person perhaps because they were considered vain about their gaudy plumage.

HAPPY TGIF DAY

the 300 species of Hummingbirds feed mainly on red tubular flowers with a long beak with an even longer tongue that laps up the nectar. they also eat small insects that live near the flowers like spiders ,beetles, ants aphids and gnats. these small flying gems are anything but cowardly, unafraid of humans and battle furiously among themselves defending their territory.observing this, aztec warriors believed they would be reincarnated as hummingbirds upon death in battle. they also believed the hummingbird was one of the original creators of the universe.
in one mayan legend the great god was busy making different kinds of birds for the world. when he was finished he found a tiny pile of scraps left over and not wanting to waste anything decided to make the tiniest bird of all. after making a pair of hummingbirds he called all the birds together to celebrate. many birds brought gifts. the house finch gave red feathers for the male to make a scarf, which the male then gave 1 or 2 of these feathers to the female. the sun gave a present also and shone down on the couple making their feathers gleam and sparkle like gold and jewels. since that time hummingbirds feathers glow with an iridescence in the sun.
indians of the american south west considered hummingbirds to be bringers of rain. it was felt the little hummer had a direct connection to the god of rain and would bring much needed water to this region. water jars were decorated with paintings of hummers. Hopi and Zuni tribes include the hummingbird in their ceremonial rain dances

Boo Boo does the HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before Coris speech:
the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds in the northeastern united states. one early naturalist felt the birds rapidly beating wings sounded like a bumble bee and named it the Humbird. the Ruby-Throated migrates from South America to southern canada flying non-stop , 500 miles, across the Gulf of Mexico.in the western united states the Rufous Hummingbird ranges farther north than any other hummingbird going as far as southern Alaska. the Annas Hummingbird resides in California wandering sometimes into Arizona and along the Rockies north into Canada . a popular myth was that the Hummingbirds must be hitchhiking a ride on larger birds to be able to travel such long distances.

hummingbirds have almost the highest metabolism of any warm blooded mammal and feed almost continuously often becoming torpid at night to preserve their energy. the female laying on her eggs doesn't have the luxury of lowering her metabolism at night since she must keep her 2 eggs warm. the intricately woven nest made up of spider web silk seems to protect her and her eggs from the cold.
in one Mayan legend birds who asked a tribal wiseman how to build a sturdy nest were sent to the hummingbirds for instructions.

Boo Boo makes Cori gargle with cepacol before her speech today and then makes her spit it out into a little brass spittoon.

A Hummingbird rarely makes any sound other than the faint :hum of its beating wings and will make a high pitched chirping sound when angry. the reason a legend says is greed. the Hummingbirds extensible tongue allows it to reach deep into a flower to obtain nectar. according to legend the Hummingbird swallowed too much nectar at one time and lost its voice in the flower. that is why the Hummingbird dashes from bloom to bloom so swiftly- it is searching for its lost voice. another legend states that the Hummingbird hibernates instead of migrating. written in a old book of folklore "Hummingbirds live by the dew and juice of flowers. they die or sleep every year in the month of october, sitting upon a a little bough, in a warm and close place. the wake in the middle of april, after the flowers be sprung and therefore call themselves the revived birds.

perhaps one day the Hummingbird will find its lots voice in a flower and the sound will be lovely to hear.

Boo Boo stands in front of the audience on this monday and gives a small introduction before Cori's campaign speech. since everybody is anxiously waiting for spring we thought we would end our campaign week talking about Hummingbirds, for when they return to the colder regions spring must be here even if it doesn't feel like it.

When the pilgrims stepped ashore in Massachusetts in 1620 the indian chiefs who greeted them wore strange, small glittering ornaments in their ears-they were stuffed hummingbirds. Cortez, the spanish conquistador was astonished when he met Montezuma in Mexico, to see that the Aztec emperor and nobles of the court were arrayed in long coats that shone brilliantly when the sun struck them. when such a cloak was presented to Cortez, he was amazed to find it made entirely of hundreds of hummingbird skins.

hummingbirds, the smallest of all birds(the Bee Hummingbird from Cuba is the size of a bumblebee) have almost been completely obliterated from the earth several times. somehow they managed to survive. in the 19th century it was fashionable to decorate ladies hats with them and millions were killed for it. in 1860 more than 500,000 hummingbird skins were auctioned in london. eventually laws were passed in the united states and london making it illegal to trade in hummingbird skins plus fashions changed so hummingbirds slowly made a recovery considering they only lay 2 small pearl sized eggs a year and are the prey of larger birds and squirrels. the destruction of their forests where they make their nests and pesticides are are now increasingly taking their toll on the tiny "jewels of the sky"

before Cori begins her speech Boo Boo dusts her off and then wishes all the birds a wonderful day.
found mostly in the old world, the Kingfisher is a bright jewel of a bird who skims over the water in a flash of blue and orange, dicing for small fish, crayfish, frogs and insects.its eyes have oval lenses enabling it to see well in the air as well as underwater. wearing the Kingfishers feathers was believed to heighten the wearers beauty.in britton it was believed the bird could glow in the dark. it was believed that the Kingfisher was originally a dull colored bird but Noah releases the Kingfisher from his arc in order to find land. after being confined for so long the bird flew up to the sky until it took on the blue color of the heavens. then it flew so close to the sun its breast was scorched so it was forced to dive into the water below . at this point it remembered it was suppose to find land and went in search of the ark but could no longer find it since Noah had long since landed on Mt Arafat. this is why the Kingfisher continues to this day flying along rivers calling out to Noah. it was also believed that upon death the birds did not decay so their bodies were placed among clothes to preserve them. whoever owned dead Kingfisher would be granted grace and loveliness by wearing its feathers. plucking feathers from a Kingfisher and throwing them in water, then retrieving only the feathers that floated and stroking a loved one with them was considered a powerful love talismans. dead Kingfishers hung up by their beaks with a thread foretold the direction the wind would blow by which direction their breast faced.

The dove has always been a symbol of peace and love since earliest recorded times. the dove served as a symbol for aphridite as the symbol of love, being both affectionate (hence the term loveydovey) and sexually active. aphrodite was believed to have been hatched from a doves egg and brought ashore by fish. in syria the goddess astarte was saved from starvation in the desert by doves who fed her milk and cheese and turned her into a dove on her death. a dove was sent from the ark by Noah in christian religion to check on whether the flood waters were receding. when the dove returned with a sprig of olive branch in its beak Noah knew god had forgiven mankind. in christian religion the dove is the symbol of the holy ghost. in the middle east the dove is held as sacred when a ruler who was killed in battle hd 2 doves fly from his heart. it was also believed any bird of prey who killed a dove would drop dead. in japan doves were believed to be messengers of war rather than symbols of peace when he was saved from discovery while hiding in a tree by two doves that flew out and convinced the enemy the tree was hiding nope. in italy russia and germany it was considered sin to kill a dove. while in the channel islands it was considered unlucky to keep pet doves which would cause a difficult marriage

Named for the striking yellow tufts that grow above its eyes during breeding season, the tufted puffin is one of the most loved birds in North America. The tufted puffin’s striking breeding season coloration has earned it such names as “sea parrot” and “clown of the sea.” With its short wings that allow it to swim expertly underwater, the tufted puffin dives for prey along coasts of California, Oregon, and Washington where populations of this seabird, as well as in Japan, are in trouble, as lack of prey, climate change, fishing, oil spills, and other dangers take their toll. Tufted puffins are able to dive up to 60 meters to catch small fish like sardines, herring, and anchovy and may make as many as 360 dives per day when foraging to feed their chicks. Breeding populations of tufted puffins in California, Oregon, and Washington have declined by 85 to 90 percent in the last three decades, from more than 30,000 birds to no more than 4000 today. Most of these remaining puffins are in Washington. Oregon and California are each estimated to have breeding populations of less than 300 birds. The population in Japan is down to ten breeding pairs. Tufted puffins are still numerous in Alaska and British Columbia. But the more southern populations that are in steep decline encompass a significant portion of the species’ historic range and contain genetic diversity that is important to maintain if the species is to persist in the long-term, particularly with impacts from climate change escalating. humans are the cause of the tufted puffin’s plight. Climate change, driven by our burning of fossil fuels, is altering temperatures and circulation patterns of our oceans, disrupting the food web and making it harder for puffins to forage and to successfully reproduce. Puffins are also caught as bycatch in commercial fishing nets, drowning underwater when they cannot surface for air.
Diving for food and roosting on the surface of the water makes the tufted puffin highly vulnerable to impacts from oil spills. A single oil spill can wipe out entire breeding colonies. In fact, in 1991, the Tenyo Maru oil spill off the coast of Washington killed about 10 percent of the state’s population of tufted puffins. Similarly, the Exxon Valdez spill was responsible for the death of up to 13,000 Alaskan tufted puffins in 1989.
To compound the problem, tufted puffins generally return to the same colony each year and even if any birds were tempted to stray, breeding colonies in the contiguous United States are physically separated from other breeding colonies to the north. This has made recovery very difficult as population numbers dwindle. In recent years,

Cori and Boo Boo both do a short HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before the presentation!

people have always been fascinated by the huge migrating flocks of Cranes. it was believed that Cranes carried small birds on their backs during their migratory travels over large bodies of water. it was believed the reason the Crances did this was that they enjoyed listening to the songs of the small birds.. this belief was held by the egyptians, the bedouins and the the Crow indians.the arawak indians pf venezuela believed tobacco was brought to them by a hummingbird who stole it from triniada and rode on the back of a crane to bring it to south america. it was believed that cranes swallowed stones to keep the wind from blowing them off course during their long migratory flights. upon arrival they would expel the stones. the stones were said to hold magical powers. if one held the stone they would find gold. also the stones were said to warn of impending danger.

The Whooping Crane is named for its call, which can be heard over great distances thanks to the bird’s extra-long trachea, which coils around its breastbone twice like a French horn. Like other cranes, the Whooper is noisy; the word “crane” comes from the Anglo-Saxon "cran," which means "to cry out."
The tallest flying bird in North America, Whooping Cranes measure up to five feet tall with a seven-to eight-foot wingspan. The species also has another distinction: It is the rarest crane in the world. Several decades ago, it almost disappeared forever due to habitat loss and hunting.
Still extremely rare, Whooping Cranes are on the WatchList and protected as an endangered species. Sadly, up to one-quarter of all Whoopers are shot and killed.
Whooping Cranes are one of our country’s most majestic birds—and also one of our most endangered. Though the species once ranged throughout the Great Plains and Gulf Coast regions, the Whooping Crane population was decimated by hunting and habitat loss, and only 16 birds remained in 1941.
Today, a major captive-breeding effort has helped the population rebound to nearly 600 individuals. But these birds are still under threat. A mated pair of Whooping Cranes was recently shot at a crawfish pond in Louisiana. Sadly, both have died from their injuries. Still worse, this is not unusual: Nearly one-quarter of all Whooping Crane deaths are caused by illegal shooting.
Whooping Cranes deserve the full protection of the law.

Boo Boo and Cori have kegs of green beer and start filling up frosty mugs and handing them out to all their friends.

St. Patrick's day is a feast celebrated yearly on March 17 (except when it lands on Catholic spiritual holidays). St. Patrick, aka St. Paddy, is the patron saint of Ireland and is celebrated by wearing green, drinking green beer (usually Guiness, but sometimes substituted with Irish whiskey or Baileys Irish cream), and eating Irish food. Traditionally, those who don't wear green are pinched on St. Patrick's day.

Cori starts playing an irish tune on her fiddle as Boo Boo , wearing heavy boots, does some Irish step dancing before Cori begins her speech for today:

An irish saint, similar to /saint francis of assisi called /st Kevin(498-618) was said to prefer the company of animals over humans and was said to have a mystical command over them. once when he was praying during lent, a blackbird landed on his outstretched hand and laid an egg there. St Kevin then remained perfectly still until the egg had hatched- an illustration of the saints virtuous patience and gentleness.
there is a saying from the county meath in ireland "when the blackbird sings before christmas, she will cry before Candlemas" This meant if the blackbird started signing before its usual time of early to mid february a cold spell will occur before february 2, when the rite of candlemas is observed. in germany it was thought a blackbird kept caged in a house offered protection against lightning.

  HI BLUE
thankyou for helping me win the honor of BOTD!

Boo Boo tosses 4 leaf clovers out to the bird e club audience before Cori begins her speech.

What is “The Ideas of March?” The Romans called March 15th “The Ides of March.” Originally, the “ideas” referred to the full moon.Ides were days of settling debts

What does “Beware the Ides of March” mean? It means, be aware of impending danger.

The saying, “Beware the Ides of March” came from William Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. In the play, a soothsayer says “Beware the Ideas of March” to Julius Caesar to warn him that this was to be his assassination day.

Julius Caesar was assassinated on March 15, 44BC by Roman Senators who were concerned that he had too much power. Rome was a Republic and these Roman Senators did not want anyone to disrupt what they had built. However, after Julius Caesar’s assassination, Rome was saddened by his death. The senators were banished and the republic was never restored to its previous glory.

“Beware the Ides of March” is now a proverb, superstition and a phrase that warns of impending danger and unfortunate events.

A proverb is a saying that contains advice or accepted truth. They are passed down through generations. Common proverbs are; “Look before you leap,” “don’t count your chickens before they hatch” and “don’t put all your eggs in one basket.”

A superstition is a belief that a particular thing, event or circumstance holds some kind of significance that something going to happen (bad or good) even though it’s not based on knowledge or reason. This belief can be based on fear, ignorance, trust in magic, coincidence, or a prior experience with a similar situation. Some common superstitions are; breaking a mirror can cause bad luck, finding a 4-leaf clover can bring good luck, stepping on a crack in the sidewalk can “break your mother’s back” or cause bad luck, the number 13 can bring you bad luck, and finding a string on your person means your going to get a letter.

  HI BLUE
BooBoo does a short irish jig before Coris speech.
the irish peasants attached great importance to the first verse of St John gospel and maintain that when a cock crows in the morning he is repeating verse 1-14 and if we understood the language of animals and birds we would often hear them quoting the same verses.

a flight of rooks over an army foretells defeat, if over a house or people when driving or walking , death ail follow.

if a hen crows on the roost it is a sure sign that fairies have struck it and its head must be cut off and flung on the ground or one of the family will die before the year is out.

never disturb swallows where ever they may build and neither remove or destroy their nests for they are wise birds and will mark your conduct either with punishment or favor.

if you hear a cuckoo on the right you will have luck all the year after.

it is very lucky for a hen and her chickens to stray into your house

if anyone in the house is sick and a cock crows with his head to the fire recovery is expected. if he crows with his head to the door then death be certain.

in whatever quarter you are looking when you first hear the cockoo in the season, you will be traveling in that direction before the year is over.

if a cock comes to the threshold and crows you may expect visitors

the cuttings of your hair must never be thrown where birds can find them or they will use your head to build nests and you will have headaches all the year after.

BEWARE OF SPEAKING ILL OF FAIRIES ON FRIDAY OR THEY WILL WORK EVIL ON YOU IF OFFENDED.

MORE IRISH FOLKLORE:
there is no irish name for the Magpie. it is generally called Francagh, a Frenchman, though no one really knows why. many odd tales are told of this bird, rising from its quaint ways of its cunning and habits of petty larceny. it is not considered evil, though to meet one alone in the morning when going on a journey is considered a evil omen, but to meet more than one magpie beacons good fortune according to this old rhyme:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR MIRTH
THREE FOR MARRIAGE
FOUR FOR BIRTH
FIVE FOR HEAVEN
SIX FOR HELL
SEVEN's THE DEVILS his own self
EIGHT FOR A WISH
NINE FOR A KISS
TEN FOR A SURPRISE you should be careful not to miss
ELEVEN FOR HEALTH
TWELVE FOR WEALTH
THIRTEEN BEWARE its the devil himself
another similar poem is:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR JOY
THREE FOR A GIRL
FOUR FOR A BOY
FIVE FOR SILVER
SIX FOR GOLD
SEVEN FOR A SECRET NEVER TO BE TOLD
seeing three Magpies on the left hand, when on a journey is unlucky, but two on the right hand is a good omen
in scotland it was believed that the bird held a drop of the devil under its tongue

A SINGLE MAGPIE IN SPRING FOUL WEATHER WILL BRING from the birds habit of feeding together only in fine weather.
if you see a solitary Magpie you can ward off bad luck by spitting over your shoulder three times doffing your hat and saying GOOD MORNING MR MAGPIE, HOW ARE YOU THIS FINE DAY or GOOD DAY, HOW IS YOUR WIFE? in hopes the Magpies mate is hiding nearby to turn your sorrow into joy.

  Hi Blue
an astonishing large and varied belief of folklore has grown up around birds on one hand man feels a strong connection to birds because they build nests in his garden or on the eaves of his home. on the other hand their freedom of flight to parts unknown has always fascinated man. migration was not fully understood before the 18th century.odd tales arose from these migrations which i have previously mentioned a few of. since St Paddys day is around the corner we thought for the next few days we would talk about irish folklore involving birds.
the Cuckoo was thought to turn into a Hawk before departing for its winter destinations. it is very unlucky to kill a Cockoo or break its eggs because a Cuckoo brings with it fine weather. the first time you hear a Cuckoo look down at your feet. if a hair is laying there you will live to comb your grey locks at an old age. a poem also accompanies the Cuckoo:
if a cuckoo sits on a bare throne
you may del your cow and buy corn
but if she sits on a green bough you may sell your corn and buy a cow.

it is most unlucky to kill a Robin Redbreast. the Robin is Gods own bird, sacred and holy and held in the highest esteem. it is believed the Robin plucked out a thorn piercing Christs brow on the cross and in so doing his breast was covered and dyed red in his blood.the Robin has since remained a sacred and blessed sign to preserve it from harm and make it beloved of all men.

  HI BLUE
A FEW RANDOM BUT INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT BIRDS:
1)THE SEXIEST PARROTS HAVE FLOURESCENT FEATHERS. BOTH MALES AND FEMALES ARE ATTRACTED TO THOSE THAT HAVE THE BRIGHTLY COLORED PLUMAGE, WHICH GLOWS BY ABSORBING ULTRA VIOLET LIGHT. HUMANS CANT SEE IT BUT THE PARROTS SURE DO.
MALE BLUE-TITS THAT HAVE RANDOM YELLOW FEATHERS ON THEIR BREAST TEND TO BE BETTR PROVIDERS FOR THEIR CHICKS SO FEMALES CHOOSE THEM ABOVE OTHER MALES
SISKINS THAT HAVE A LARGER BLACK PATCH ON THEIR CHEST SIGNAL STATUS WITHIN THE COMMUNITY AND ALSO SHOW THEY ARE HUNGRIER THAN OTHER SISKINS SO MORE FOOD IS SHARED WITH THEM.
2)THE KEA A DISTANT RELATIVE OF THE PARROT HAS A RUBBER FETISH AND WILL EAT THE WINSHIELD WIPERS ON CARS AND HANG ONTO THE WIPERS EVEN IF THE CAR IS MOVING WHILE THEY CHOMP AWAY.
3)HUMMINGBIRDS CONSUME THEIR ENTIRE BODY WEIGHT A DAY TO PROVIDE FOR THEIR HIGH ENERGY LEVELS
4)THE HOATZIN, A VENEZUELAN BIRD, HAS A STOMACH SIMILIAR TO A COW. ITS FOOD FERMENTS INSIDE IT PRODUCING A AROMA MUCH LIKE COW DUNG. HENCE THE NICKNAME STINKBIRD.
5)PENGUINS ARE NATURES SUPER-POOPERS: CHINSTRAP AND ADELIE PENGUINS POINT THEIR REAR ENDS OUT OF THEIR NEST AND FIRE THEIR POO INTO THE AIR WITH SUCH FORCE IT LANDS 16 INCHES AWAY
6)VULTURES FEELING THREATENED WILL VOMIT VIOLENTLY IN THE DIRECTIONS OF THEIR ATTACKERS. THIS IS DONE OUT OF FEAR AND FOR SURVIVAL BECAUSE BY LOSING PART OF THEIR BODY WEIGHT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO TAKE TO THE AIR AND ESCAPE MUCH MORE QUICKLY. THE VOMIT ITSWLF IS SO FOUL WILL ALSO DISTRACT THE PREDATOR AND POSSIBLY KILL THEM
7)BIRDS CAN GET DRUNK
IN 2005 A LARGE FLOCK OF CEDAR WAXWINGS FLEW INTO THE GLASS WINDOWS OF A BUILDING. THE 100'S OF WAXWINGS WERE INTOXICATED ON HOLLY BERRIES. THE SEYCHELLES BLUE PIGEON FEEDS ON FERMENTED INDIAN ALMONDS AND BECOME SO INEBRIATED THEY CANT FLY FOR HOURS AFTERWARDS.

BOTH CORI AND BOO BOO THANK ALL THE BIRDS FOR THEIR CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR CORIS BOTM CAMPAIGN.
BIRDS WILL BAND TOGETHER TO SING TRIUMPHANT SONGS WHEN THEY HAVE WON A TERRITORIAL BATTLE. THE BOUBOU WILL WILL PERFORM DISTINCTIVE DUETS TO SIGNAL THEIR VICTORIES.. THIS ALERTS OTHER BOUBOUS THAT THE COAST IS NOW CLEAR AND ALSO WARNS OFF OTHER POTENTIAL INVADERS.
SCIENTISTS HAVE FOUND THAT BIRDS WITH A LARGE .SONG REPERTOIRE ALSO HAVE LARGER SPLEENS, WHICH IN TURN IS LINKED TO THE QUALITY OF THE BIRDS IMMUNE SYSTEM. FEMALE BIRDS LIKE THE GREAT REED WARBLER MATING WITH THE MALES WITH THE BIGGEST SONG BOOK HAVE OFF SPRING THAT TEND TO SURVIVE LONGER
MALE CANARAIES CAN DRIVE FEMALES WILD WITH THEIR SPECTACULAR RAPID FIRE TRILLING VIBRATING NOTES 16 TIMES PER SECOND. FEMALES HEARING THIS IMMEDIATELY ADOPT THE POSTURE THAT SIGNALS THEY ARE READY FOR SEX.
THE MALE WOODPECKER DOESNT SING WELL SO INSTEAD HE USES HIS HEAD DRUMMING ON ANY SURFACE THAT RESONATES AND WILL ATTRACT MATES.
THE BLUEJAY IMMIATES THE RED TAILED HAWK PERFECTLY TO WARN OTHERS ITS AROUND
THE BURROWING OWL MAKES THE EXACT SOUND OF A RATTLESNAKE TO WARN PREDATORS AWAY FROM ITS UNDERGROUND BURROW.
THE MALE RUFFED GROUSE MOUNTS A FALLEN LOG OR LARGE ROCK AND BEATS HIS WINGS AGAINST THE AIR CREATING A DRUMMING SOUND TO ATTRACT MATES.

  Hi Blue
Boo Boo clears her throat and imitates perfectly the sound of the landline ringing at home. she then pushes Cori onto the stage for more on the speech about bird songs:
Owls hoot less when it rains since wet weather acts as a damper on the acoustics within woodlands and forests. Owl calls are 70 times more likely to be heard when it is dry outside.
the male Loon has a distinctive loud yodel that is a clear threat to other birds. a scientist once translated it as "come near me and i will pull all your feathers out:! Loons radically change their tunes when they move to a new home apparently to make sure they sound different than the birds already living there and it is a signal they are not to be messed ith.
Male Bronzed-Winged Jacanas live in a harem ruled by one female. all the birds start yelling when plying for her attention.
like musical instruments different shaped beaks make different shaped sounds. heavy beaks designed to crush seeds make deeper less complicated sounds than slim beaks designed to snatch insects heavy beaks can't catch the same range or trill as fast as those with smaller beaks.
the deepest voiced voiced bird is the Cassowary which is the second largest bird next to the ostrich. it uses low frequency infra-sound used by only one other land lving animal, the Elephant. its call can be pitched as low as 23 Hertz, the bottom range humans can hear.
the black-coped chickadee uses a graded system of warning cries. the :seer: sound warns of predators from Hawks and Owls and warns other birds to take cover. a full "chickadee" warns of a resting predator such as an Owl perched near by. Nuthatches and small Woodpeckers recognize this sound and join groups of Chickadees to flock together and crowd the predator until it flies away. the most serious call warns of the Pygmy Owl which Chickadees find hard to evade. their call then sounds like" chick-a-dee-dee-dee-dee" which warns the flocks to scatter.
Cori takes a bow and Boo Boo takes a towel and wraps it around Coris neck and leads her off of the stage.

  HI BLUE
Cori has just had her bath and had her beak buffed by Boo Boo. Boo Boo feels one must always look their best when speaking to the public. Cori clears her throat and continues her speech about bird songs.
male birds sing in the morning to appear more macho and by delivering a lusty dawn chorus he sends out the message he is full of energy and raring to go. blackbirds and song thrushes can do this more than 1-1/2 hours before chaffinches and blue tits. scientists have discovered that the bigger the birds eyes the sooner in the morning it strikes up its song. their singing not only determines their territory but attracts mates and also predators like owls. with their hearing out of action while they warble they must be able to rely on heir eyes to see attacks coming. those birds with smaller eyes need extra sunlight to be sure of their safety. birds pass on songs from generation to generation. fathers pass on their repertoire of chirps and tweets to their sons and mothers give theirs to their daughters. female songbirds learn their songs at a much faster rate than the males do (who didn't know that one). a female cardinal learned her selection of music in one third the time it took her male sibling to learn the exact songs. females are attracted to the male with the largest and loudest songs so those males really have to work it.male birds that imitate other songbirds songs like the mockingbirds, the mynah and the australian
lyrebird are very attractive to the female because they feel if the male knows so much about the other birds songs it must also know where they keep their food
supplies..
tomorrow we will continue along this same vein of thought

  Hi Blue
Boo Boo rubs beak gloss on Coris beak, before her speech, to make it glisten.

the goose barnacle gets it name from the long rubbery stalk that attaches this crustacean to ships, whales or pilings. to the ancients, this resemblance to the neck of a goose was more than a mere coincidence, goose barnacles were actually thought to be the embryos of barnacle geese, a small species that winters in europa. people thought they were making an educated guess since no one had ever seen a barnacle goose nest since there breeding grounds are in the far arctic and the birds black and white plumage was thought to match the light and dark plates of the barnacles
Pelicans were mistakenly believed to feed their young on their own blood and were medieval symbols of sacrifice .an emblem adopted by the christian churches in the dark ages.

Boo Boo breathes a sigh of relief that Cori got through the speech without any mishaps.

The United Nations has declared today as World Wildlife Day, coinciding with the signing of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in Washington, D.C. on March 3, 1973.
World Wildlife Day provides a strong opportunity for the global conservation community to speak with a unified voice and declare that there is no excuse for the indiscriminate killing, selling, or captivity of wild animals.
march 3rd. todays topic WORDS FROM BIRDS:
1) BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH: better to cherish what we have than to look longingly at things that are beyond our reach
2) LIKE WATER OFF OF A DUCKS BACK: Let everyday annoyances leave us as quickly as water slides off the well oiled feathers of a duck
3) BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER: most of the time time. even in winter when large gatherings of flocks of ducks and geese are visible most stay in groups of their own species.
4) EAGLE-EYED: self explanatory
5) EATS LIKE A BIRD: if you did you would be very obese since most birds consume up to 20 percent of their body weight daily
6) HAPPY AS A LARK: refers to the birds exuberant song flight. larks have bad days
when troubles come home to roost gong them 7) SOME TO GROUSE ABOUT
8) MAD AS A LOON: loons aren't mad but their call sure sounds that way
9) SWAN SONG: a belief that the mute swan silent all its life gives out a single song just before it is about to die
10) WISE AS AN OWL: HOO are we to say they are not wise!

  Hi Blue sweetie!
How are u sweetie? Well, it looks like luck is on our side today! Our county was supposed to get 10 plus inches of snow from late Saturday night thru Monday 1pm, but it's been down graded to 3-6 inches...tho it's snowing pretty good right now! Luckily, it looks like the g-kids will have a 2 he delay instead of A cancellation...all snow days have been used & any more missed days must be made up at end of school year.
Today, we will finish the Parrot's Bill of Rights.

A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS (Pt 2)
7. PLEASE DON'T PUNISH ME.
Just as I don't always understand ur peculiarities, u may not understand mine. I don't TRY to get in trouble - remember...a house is NOT the jungle. If I DO screw up, don't yell at me & NEVER hit me! I have very sensitive ears & I may never trust u again if u strike me. Hands are sometimes scary things to us. (Why in the world would u not be zygodactylous like us?) Even more importantly, we don't learn by punishment. We are gentle creatures who only strike back to protect ourselves; we learn through patience & love.
8. SPEAK MY "LANGUAGE".
I know u get upset with me when I knock over my water bowl, throw food, scream or pluck my feathers. I don't do these to annoy u - I am probably trying to tell u something (perhaps that I am hurting, lonely, or sad). Learn to speak MY (body) language. Remember that I, alone of all creatures on this planet, learn to speak yours!
9. SEE ME AS AN INDIVIDUAL.
I am a unique & feeling being. No two of us are alike. Please don't be disappointed in me if I don't talk like u wanted, or can't do the tricks that ur friend's parrot can do. But if u pay close attention to me (& I always empathize with u, whether u know it or not), I will show u a unique being who will give u so much more than talking & playing. Give me a chance to show u who I am; I think you'll find the effort worth it. And remember - I am NOT an ornament; I DO NOT enhance ANY living room decor. And I am NOT a status symbol - if u use me as such, I might nip at your turned-up nose!
10. SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH ME.
Above all, PLEASE remember that u are my Special Person. I put all my trust & faith in u. We parrots are used to being monogamous (no bar-hopping for us!) So please don't go away for long periods or give me away. That would be a sadness from which I may never recover.
If that seems to be asking a lot, remember - u could have learned about my needs BEFORE bringing me home. Even having a baby or taking a new job isn't a fair reason - you made a commitment to me FIRST! And if u think that u must leave me because u might die, provide for me forever after u leave. I may live to a ripe old age but I can't provide for myself. Remember I'm in a small cage amongst people who are NOT of my blood.
AWE SHUCKS! Blog too long & cut off! Will finish last part tomorrow & continue with first aid - poisoning & toxicity. See u tomorrow sweetie!

  Hi Blue
well we finally got hit with the winter storm last night. its not too bad so far and only about 3 inches. lets set our thought on spring today and think about songbirds The use of DNA by scientists has provided new food for thought to people who had assumed that most birds were faithful to their mates, if not for a lifetime, at least for a single breeding season.

It turns out that there is more hanky-panky going on in the back fields and woodlands of the country among birds than anyone could imagine. DNA studies of songbirds have shown it is a common practice among songbirds to copulate with birds other than their mates, thus producing broods of nestlings with mixed parentage.

Divorce is also common among birds, particularly in birds of prey. If a mated pair of hawks, for example, is not successful in producing a brood of youngsters, an avian divorce often arises and one or the other will seek another mate

the Smith’s Longspur is enough to make even Hugh Hefner blush.

Small like a sparrow, the Smith’s Longspur spends its summers in Alaska and Canada and its winters in the Midwest and the South, often congregating in open fields.

In terms of range, then, it’s a lot like some other species. What sets the Smith’s Longspur apart is its astonishing libido.

At the peak of the spring mating season, the typical Smith’s Longspur copulates more than 350 times a week. The females solicit these encounters, and the males cooperate roughly half the time. Otherwise the creatures are resting and refueling.

How are u sweetie? Congrats to my BBFF Snowflake for winning BOTM! She will be an amazing queen!

A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS. by Stewart A. Metz, M.D.
1. GET TO KNOW ABOUT PARROTS BEFORE U BRING ME HOME.
I am NOT a domesticated pet like a dog or cat. I still have the spirit of the jungle in me. I have special needs, which u may find it hard to fill. Please don't learn these too late for my well-being. And please don't acquire one of my cousins wild from the jungle...it will jeopardize his survival & well-being, & that won't be a party for u either!
2. GIVE ME THE LARGEST HOME POSSIBLE.
I am used to flying through rainforests or savannahs. I have given up this great gift for ur pleasure. At the very least, give me enough room to flap my wings & exercise. And o need toys for my amusement & wood to chew...otherwise, I might confuse ur home with the forest & its trees.
3. GIVE ME A NUTRITIOUS DIET.
I need a wide variety of fresh & nutritious foods, even if they take time to prepare. I cannot survive on seed alone. Take time to learn what mynneeds are.
4. LET ME HAVE A "SOCIAL LIFE".
I am a gregarious flock animal...but I am NOT one of u. I need lots of socialization to learn how to act with u, & with my siblings. I also need to have adequate quality time with u every day - no matter what it schedule or other needs are. I am a living, feeling creature. Above all, I need to be able to have complete trust in u, & count on ur predictability in looking after me - EVERY DAY.
5. LET ME BE CLEAN.
I may like to drop food or even throw it, but I need meticulous cleanliness to be healthy. My skin itches without frequent showers, the barbs of my feathers won't seal if they become oily & worst of all, I may become ill if my food & water is not always sanitary.
6. I NEED MY OWN DOCTOR.
U may not understand my physiology & therefore u may not recognize it early on when I get sick. And it may be too late when u do, because I hide my illnesses (remember what I said about my being an animal of the jungle, where there are lots of predictors). And I need an avian vet - a specialisy (no HMOs for me please). If u can't afford one, perhaps u shouldn't have taken me home.
I will send u the 2nd part tomorrow. Have a great day sweetie!

First thing tomorrow, I will hand over the castle keys, & take her by the wing & give her the grand tour of her new home for the month!
Tomorrow, I will send u the first part of A Parrot's Bill of Rights. It's like a parrot owners manual, short version, with a bit of comic relief added in! Today, I will finish A Parrot's Prayer. I have to warn u, the second part is as heartbreaking as the first, & will leave a lump in ur throat.

A PARROT'S PRAYER (cont.)
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the macaws, cockatoos, amazons & conures that are stripped of their vocal cords for screaming; their sensitive beaks cut back to prevent biting.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all birds that end up for sale in pet shops or breeders like used merchandise, unwanted & frightened in strange surroundings with nothing more than the familiar sight of bars on a cage.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the neglected birds that are sick with infections from filthy conditions & malnourishment that may never recover & know what it is like to feel healthy & be playful.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the misconceived parrots who were beaten, stabbed, blinded & burned for just being a parrot.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For every african grey, cockatoo & macaw that punishes itself by maiming their bodies & plucking their feathers & for those who have lost all spirit of life & sway their head low from side to side slowly into insanity.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
We ask humbly of you dear Lord to look upon all of your magnificent feather creations, protect them from evil & harm caused by man & to bring forth an awakening in the human heart & make it a kinder, gentler world for all captive birds.
AMEN.

How are u sweetie! I meant to be back sooner, but since mom is feeling a lot better, she has been busy! Plus giving me attention is a full time job! It's been over a month & mom still isn't smoking! That's another reason mom hasn't been online much...it's an activity she associates with smoking & the only time she craves one, but it's starting to go away! There is still a lot of first aid info I would like to go over, but first, we would like to share a couple things that are in one of mom's books. Both are very thought provoking & also very true. I will start with A PARROT'S PRAYER, (which is incredibly sad & infuriating!, then A PARROT'S BILL OF RIGHTS. Each should take 2 days.

A PARROT'S PRAYER
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the wild caught parrots so savagely netted & swept away from their families while their babies, dumped into burlap sacks, cried out in terror.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the exotic birds that witnessed the destruction of all the blessed trees & fled fires in fear from man's thirst to dominate, stripping the land of all its inhabitants, leaving nothing but bare ground behind.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the parrots that struggled through the capture, but died merciless in transport from the stress of overcrowded, barbaric, confinements & inconceivable horror.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the survivors that made it into captivity but exist in a nightmare of confinement unable to use their God given wings of flight as they once remembered.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all the baby birds bred in captivity whose crops burned or have died needlessly from harshness of human hands.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all captive birds that have been erased from their owner's consciousness & are abandoned to a lifeless existence with only a distant memory of what it was like to hear a gentle voice from someone that used to care.
LORD, HEAR OUR PRAYER...
For all those helpless creatures who don't know what it's like to live life as a bird or even to feel the breeze or sunlight but are doomed to darkness in closets or garages, trapped inside covered cages or shackled.

Heartbreaking, isn't it? I will finish the Parrot's Prayer tomorrow. Have a great day sweetie!

Mom had been sick, so I don't understand why she went on vacation for 4 days to a place called a hospital! She won a trip there coz she had something called pneumonia. It seems to have been a good place for her to go coz she doesn't look like a walking zombie anymore! Another good thing that came out of her trip was that she quit smoking! It's been 3 weeks since she smoked one of those nasty things! Mom always smoked outside, & never around me, but she always smelled of those yucky things. Mom is happy, she tried to quit dozens of times but was never successful. Mom was sooooo sick, that she didn't even suffer withdrawal! Being sick gave mom a wake-up call...she struggled to breathe the last couple weeks & that scared the crap out of her! Also, not buying any cigarettes these last 3 weeks, she's had a bunch of extra money (to spend on ME of course! In the next couple days, I will resume birdie first aid blogs. I still have lots of first aid info that I want to share with all my birdie friends!

Oh, I wanted to share with all my dear friends. .my sissy Amanda's biopsy came back NORMAL!!!! We are sooooo relieved & so thankful to God that sissy doesn't have cancer! Mom was having a hard trying to pretend everything was fine so that sissy wouldn't be quite as scared! The ENT Doc seems to think it may caused by something viral. Sissy isn't going to bother pursuing it right now, but sometime in the future! First aid blogs will start back up again in the next day or 2, mom is trying to get things in order after being in the hospital. See u soon sweetie!

  Hi Blue ♥
our snow is still here and we had a couple of nice neighbors shovel all of our snow from the sidewalks and driveway. Dad wouldn't have been able to do it without hurting himself.
Peyton had an awesome year with lots of records set and you are right, it was their time to shine and shine they did...

You are my Valenbird as well...love, Chica ♥

  Hi Blue ♥
we were all so happy that our 'Hawks won...it must have been hard for your dad to watch the game and see the 'Hawks destroy the Broncos. We were all felt sorry for Peyton as he is a great quarterback, if he had been playing any other team, we would have been cheering for him.
We got a storm here yesterday and got a bunch of snow and it is snowing again tonight. The parronts managed to get the groceries today so they don't have to go out again for a while.

I miss you too, sweetie and of course I will be your Valenbird...

Wing hugs and love, Chica ♥

  Hi Blue
DAY 31
How are u sweetie? It's been a rough week here! Sissy had her biopsy on Wednesday. She's a little bit sore, but not too bad. The Dr said she would have sissy's results in a week. Mom has a horrible case of bronchitis & hasn't been out of bed since last Saturday, except for a Drs appt on Tuesday & chest x-ray on Thursday! Mom is going to have to make another appt. She's finished her antibiotic & is feeling worse instead of feeling better.

I want to thank each one of my dear friends for all ur support during my campaign, it has really meant a lot to me! I want to thank everybirdy that put my name & page # on their name tags...that really meant a lot to me! I would like to give sweet Momma Deb a special thanks for all the awesome campaign pics that she made for me! If it wasn't for Momma Deb, I wouldn't have had any pics!

Mom ALMOST forgot my Hatchday, good thing sissy remembered! I'm sure it's the fever & lack of sleep!

There is still lots & lots of first aid info that I want to share with u! I will continue doing blogs! It should take up all of Feb, maybe March too! Mom is going to get this blog out, then spoil me the rest of my Hatchday! She needs to start treating me like a queen!

Hi Blue & the Outlaw Macaws
DAY 26 -- NO BLOG #25
How are u sweetie? I wonder if anybirdy else had trouble getting on BC yesterday? I kept getting kicked off every time I tried to leave a blog, so I'll do yesterday's blog today.
Today, we will discuss:
DANGEROUS FOODS
In general, foods which are safe & healthy for parrots to eat. However, there are exceptions. These are a few examples of foods to avoid:
ALCOHOL -- Avoid completely; consumption can lead to brain damage & death.
APPLE SEEDS -- Contain cyanide. (All pits & seeds from fruits are best avoided.)
AVOCADO -- (Including guacamole.)vPit contains cyanide, which can leech from pit into the avocado flesh. Avoid completely; consumption is known to have caused death within hours.
CHOCOLATE -- Avoid completely; consumption of even small quantities can cause rapid onset of hyperactivity, vomiting, diarrhea, heartbeat irregularities, seizures, & death. If u suspect ur bird has ingested chocolate, administer 1 cc of Pepto-Bismol & rush ur bird to an avian vet.
CAFFEINE -- Includes caffeinated beverages, coffee grounds, & tea bags or ice tea crystals. See symptoms & treatment listed under chocolate.
FAT -- AVOID feeding high fat foods; excess fat over time can cause fatty liver disease, obesity, diarrhea & oily feather texture. Excess fat in the diet can also interfere with the absorption of other nutrients, such as calcium.
ONIONS: -- Excessive amounts of cooked or raw onions can be toxic to ur bird. Too many onions in the diet can destroy red blood cells & cause anemia, jaundice, & bloody urine.
RHUBARB LEAVES -- Avoid completely; consumption can cause death.
SALT -- Consumption can cause excessive drinking & urinating, depression, neurologic hyperactivity, tremors & death. When necropsied, birds having consumed excessive amounts of salt show a great deal of fluid buildup in the brain & hemorrhaging. Mushrooms, garlic, Mistletoe, tobacco, batteries, some coins, mirror backing, foil, are some other examples or bird poisons. We will cover toxic plants & heavy metal next. Here's hoping BC is back to normal. I suspected that there was a problem, coz at 6pm yesterday, I hadn't received any blogs. When I got on BC this morning, there was blogs there from yesterday...strange! This is the first time I didn't have a bog that I can't blame mom! I hope u had a good day & I'll see u tomorrow!

  Hi Blue ♥
the Milonga was lots of fun but just being with you is fun all by itself...

Of course I'll go to the Superbowl with you...I am so excited about the game...we all really want the Seahawks to win, they have worked so hard....There were thousands of fans lining the streets to the airport waving at the busses with the Seahawks in them. Us 12s are a loyal group!

Frozen pipes are terrible to have, the parronts had them once long ago. Glad to hear that your dad got right on yours and fixed them quick...

Mom was playing with Napoleon tonight and had him on her fingers and had her hand placed on his back while she was kissing his belly when she bent over with him and ended up with him laying on his back and not hanging on to mom at all. He was funny cause as soon as he let go of mom's finger he dropped his head way down so he was looking at the floor. Mom will have to try and get dad to take a picture when he isn't looking or he will puff all up and want to get dad...lol

We are not in the single digits, around 30º + or - a couple of º...We got snow this morning after dad got back from the coffee shop. It was enough to cover the road but did not stay on the grass. It did not stay for very long and then it snowed again for a while but that didn't stay either thank goodness.

Wing hugs and love, Chica ♥

  Hi Blue ♥
I really do understand that it is hard to keep up with blogs so don't worry about it. Of course I forgive you sweetheart.

The Milonga was such fun tonight, it was so nice to spend time with you at the party. Kiddo and SPs dance was so sexy, they are an adorable couple.

Mom is very excited about the Seahawks going to the Super Bowl.
Sorry to hear that your mom has had computer problems.

Wing hugs and love, Chica ♥
