I had wanted a parrot since I was a teenager. In Jan. '08 I decided that at 45, it was time to start narrowing down what breed of parrot I was going to get. I would have been thrilled with just about any one of the "large" breed parrots. And I was actually familiar with the African Grey, the Amazon's, and most of the macaws... I really thought I knew MOST of what I needed to know to properly take care of a parrot. But as I began to seriously look into getting a bird, I learned that the more I learned the more I needed to learn; that I didn't even begin to know what I needed to know. I began to understand that I needed to take a serious look at the noise levels each breed makes, the foods they eat and the cost associated, and on...I decided that I should go to local pet shops to see if I could learn a little bit more in person.

One shop I went to had Gabriel. I was NOT ready to buy. I had NO desire to purchase a bird from a pet store. And yet here was this beautiful bird in HORRIBLE circumstances! It was, in some ways, a very abusive situation. I had NO money. I could not imagine that there would be anyway I could possibly raise the appropriate funds. I left the store in tears!

I went to bed that night anticipating not getting much sleep. But I said my prayers and ask God for a miracle if "that bird" was supposed to be mine! Imagine my when I got up the next morning and checked my banking account on line and found $3,000.00 that HAD NOT been there when I went to bed the night before. It was payment from the Social Security Administration for monies they felt they had underpaid me for the year prior! I HAD NO IDEA!!! I hadn't gotten anything in the mail, or any phone calls ...nothing! I called the store IMMEDIATELY and told them to get my bird ready to roll! I was coming to get my boy! I've know that Gabe is supposed to be with me! I've had him for 5 years now and I wouldn't take anything in the world for him.
