I currently have 3 macaws milo Greenwing, I have raised him from 4 weeks old,
Peanut a blue & gold I raised from 4 weeks old and scarlet Greenwing a rescue that is 7 years old. Originally it all started when I rescued rocky a 21 year old Greenwing
Who's owner had passed away and the relatives not knowing what to do left him in his cage in an empty house dropping by to feed him until they could find a permanent home. i had heard about rocky and wanted to see if I could help. it was instant bond for the next 4 years we were best friends. I got a call that a breeder had a baby blue and gold they couldn't handle weening, if I wanted I could have. I had never done this before and wouldn't recommend it but I wanted a companion for rocky and brought the baby home I talked to vet and they showed me everything I needed to know to get started from then on I read every article about hand raising macaws. I introduced rocky to peanut and instantly they bonded rocky preened her and tried to feed her.
I was amazed he took to her like that, he hadn't seen another bird in 25 years.
We were a happy family until rocky got sick I took him to an emergency vet they did X-rays and tests they gave him a shot I took him home thinking all was well he died in my arms that night. My wife, peanut and me were destroyed.
After a year I wanted to try and find me and peanut a friend, my wife started asking around I wanted to find a rescue bird we took in scarlet (GreenWing) and Rhett (Cockatoo) sadly the owner of these birds never handled them just looked at them. scarlet is content to just hang out. we love her and she has a home with us forever but peanut and her do not like each other. the cockatoo we found a permanent owner that could show him the one on one attention he needs plus we had read the powder on the feathers that cockatoos have is bad for macaws respiratory system. We looked for what seemed forever and my wife came across an aviary that had closed down and by chance they had a single baby Greenwing that had hatched from a mating pair that hadn't produced in years.
We went over and picked up our baby Greenwing we named milo that was 3 years ago.
