My owner loves telling the story. She said, "One day I woke up and decided I needed more animal love in my life, so I sought a dog. I once swore that I would never buy a pet from a store since I believe it's exploitative, but curiosity got the best of me at one pet store with puppies and birds galore. After being unable to resist the young lovebirds in the open cage, I stuck my hand in and Zizi was the first to hop up on me. I will always remember how blessed and honored I felt that she chose me.". Awards

Hi! My name is Princess Zipporah Precious Peachy Pinkerton

I am a Lovebird from Woodbridge, VA.

My main name is Zizi, since I have such a long name, being a princess and all. My owner also calls me Zeetz, the cute patoot, and her pookie.

10 years old   F

I love millet, and a little taste of fresh carrot from the fridge.

I adore my happy hut, a plush tent where I nap and escape. I can also be found tummy-deep in my seed bowl.

I hate to be disturbed during the night and will growl from my happy hut where I am sleeping. I also hate to be kept away from visitors and company in the house. I love people! Perhaps too much, because I bite them and then they don't want to be my friend.

She always takes care of me, and has committed to always doing so. She loves me very much, and she gives in to my every demand, although she tries to resist. Heh heh heh...

I love to shred, and I am starting to demand that my pet parent mate with me. Alas, she cannot, though I remain persistent. Perhaps she will get me a boyfriend!.

  Hey Zizi!
You are so beautiful! Here's a vote! My Birdie, Fifi, has a happy hut too, one exactly like yours. Isn't it a great little condo? And it's preenable! Did you know there is a toy too, from the same company that makes the hut? (Forgot their name, but can check.) The toy is plush as well, and it's a kind of a blankie, about your size, and it attaches to the cage bars. It sits nicely on a perch, for example, and forms a cozy nook for you to cuddle to or lean on when you take a nap. Tell your Mom about it ; it's a nice thing to have for smaller-sized birds. Now I'll speak to your Mom : I'm no specialist, but maybe my suggestions will be of assistance. It sure must be confusing to you when Zizi tries to mate with you. Bird Talk actually ran an article about how to deter such advances a while ago. I will look it up and let you know which issue it was. It basically said that it would be best not to indulge your bird because he or she will only become more confused. It advised that you put your bird down to cool off whenever they try to mate with you. I know it may seem difficult, but I think with time it can only become easier. I don't know for how long you've been Zizi's Mom ; if it's not too long, have you thought of taking her to a vet for a well-bird check-up? You love her so much, so I think it would really be a good idea. First off, they will run basic blood tests on her, including dna, so you will be reassured as to her sex. Just in case. Next, the vet will be able to tell you if the tummy changes are related to eggs or something else. Don't be afraid to take Zizi to the vet. It's one of the best things you can do for your sweetie princess. Birds do hide illnesses very well, and you don't wanna wait, especially if Zizi is experiencing tummy troubles. I hope and believe it's nothing, like you say, but just diarrhea and constipation must be unpleasant enough for your little baby. The symptoms you describe could be related to a number of different issues, including egg-binding, so I would really suggest you consult an avian vet instead of waiting. It's absolutely not my intention to scare you! I truly hope everything turns out all right! My little Linnie, Fifi, has had I think four well-bird check-ups so far, and I can't describe the feeling of relief I feel each time I know FOR SURE that he has a clean bill of health. Being his Mommy, I feel proud to provide him with all the care that he needs, and as we all know, medical care is so important. Also, if for example you can't afford a vet visit at that point, there are various insurance options available. Please keep us posted on your Princess' progress! It's a pleasure meeting you and Zizi! Love, Eva and Fifi (Fifi will have a page very soon :).

Eva, Toronto, AE.

Zizi is starting to show real signs that she's about to lay some unfertilized eggs.

For several months now, she will edge up to me and assume the female lovebird mating position, alluring me to mate with her. It's clear that she wants to breed, and her instincts are very strong. I usually ignore this little demonstration, because there's not a lot I can do to satisfy her. It does, however, provide the perfect opportunity to check out her flight feathers. She had them clipped about 10 months ago or so, before I brought her home.

So I will give her a head massage to help with the pin feathers, and take a moment to observe her lovely flight feathers.

I had hoped that this behavior would slowly disappear if I discouraged it, but she hasn't stopped. In fact, it is all she ever does when she is out of her cage, making any other interaction difficult. So I indulge her a bit, because I don't know what else to do.

A few days ago, though, he tummy started to swell. Naturally, I was alarmed, and examined her a bit. It was a little firm and a little soft, and I figured she was going to lay some unfertilized eggs.

Each day the bulge is growing and she is becoming more and more docile, slow to move, and aggressive. She is also having digestion issues. Her vent is sometimes soiled and I have to clean it off, because she is experiencing a mix of diarrhea and constipation.

I sure hope everything turns out allright, because she is my little princess.

Come visit me, Princess Zipporah Precious Peachy Pinkerton.
