I adopted a cockatiel a couple years ago and after a while I felt really bad about leaving her home alone for 10 to 12 hours a day. She seemed well adjusted to my schedule but still, I wanted to find her a friend. I did lots of research and decided to find a Pionus or Poicephalus depending on local availability. I visted a few local bird shops and found one that had babies of both species. I went to the shop everyday for a couple weeks while the babies were being weaned. I eventually chose the Red Bellied simply because he seemed to take to me more than the Pionus. It's turned out to be a great choice. As a bonus Rocky's turned out to be quite the little talker. He seems to be able to repeat almost anything I say..

Hi! My name is Rocky

I am a Poicephalus from Surprise, AZ.

Rock, The Rockster, Rockadoodle.

8 years old   M

Poicephalus

Cashews, grapes and cherries.

Probably like most birds, I like to be with my human. Other than that though, I'm happy most anywhere and I can make a toy out of most anything.

My biggest pet peeve used to be that I couldn't fly. Since then though, my daddy has let my feathers grow in an now I can fly like a bird. I am happier and more confident and can actually feel the wind beneath my wings.

I love my daddy because he gives me a very comfortable place to live with lots to eat and lots to play with. I especially love the out of cage time when I can fly free and play with my human. He gives great scratches too.

I love to hang upside down whenever I can and sometimes by only one foot. I also like to chew the buttons off of my daddy's remote controls. He says "no" and tells me they cost money. I don't know what that means so I just say "no" right back to him and continue to chew..

To chew or not to chew, that is the question..

  Hi Rocky from Toeless Hope
Sorry it has taken me to song to respond to your visit to my page. Rocky is so pretty! It's so funny how the African birds have the same body, but different colors. Both my African bird, Hope and Pickles both have fiesty attitudes. All my birds love red grapes too. For some reason, none of them are interested in cashews or almonds or any other nut. Pickles, my Meyer's likes to chew on wood, while Hope the Senegal likes rope. Thanks for stopping by in October! Squak at you soon!

By the way, I love your new pics. You're quite a photogenic little guy! Did your Dad submit an article about you to Bird Talk for their up coming feature on Poicephalus? I hope so because you are such a cutie! You need more publicity. Oh, and by the way, did you see our announcement? It's a GIRL! Her name is Miss Lucy Blue, and she's doing great. I think I actually like her! Mommy will be working on her web page soon. If it weren't for this great honor being BOTW, she probably would have had it up by now, but she has SOOOOO many thank you notes to type for me. She's quite a splendid secretary, you know!   Hi Brian, Rocky and Buddy,
The Quaker has landed! We don't know if it's a boy or a girl yet. I sent a blood sample in today to Avian Biotech in FL. Hopefully, we'll know in about a week. Then I can finally name the baby. I have to say, this baby is really calm and seems to be having no trouble adjusting. It's eating well, steps up, is cuddly and just all-around adorable! On the way home from Ohio yesterday, it sat for almost 3 hours snuggled up to my neck. So Daisy has done some inspecting of it and seems OK. She is very curious and likes checking it out. I had the 2 of them on the kitchen table today for awhile. I put some food down on the table and they ate together just fine. Daisy doesn't want it to get too close to her though. I'll put up a web page for it after I know the sex and it has a name, (I hate calling it "IT"!,)so probably next week. Hope all is well with you and your flock. ~~ Susan and Daisy

The other day I saw a blurb that said in Oct. or Nov. the featured bird in Bird Talk mag. will be the poicephalus. It asked for articles about peoples' birds. Now I can't find it. It was on one of the Bird Channel pages, or in the mag. Anyway, I thought of you and Rocky. You could send in something about him if you're so inclined. Tomorrow is the Big Day around here.   Hi Brian, Rocky and Buddy,
Well I met a lady on the BC who has blue Quakers. She lives in Ohio, about a 2 1/2 hr. drive from us. And after much consideration and reading, I've decided to get a Quaker. I also don't know of anyone around here that has a poicephalus. Her price is good and she seems like a very nice woman. She is not a breeder, just happened to have a male and female quaker who decided to make her a grandma to their fids. Anyway, we are planning to go see the little ones a week from next Sun. She has 8 Quakers and says they all talk, except for the babies. Actually, the 2 babies that are 4 months old are already saying "Hello". So I'm excited, although a little nervous about how Daisy will react. She's been an "only bird" for her whole life so far. I'll let you know when the little arrival gets here. And here's another vote for the Rockster. Thanks for all your help. ~~ Susan

  HI again from Daisy!
Hey Brian, that's our little granddaughter, and what she's worried about is her birthday "Princess" crown. Daisy likes the "jewels" on it, just like she LOVES my jewelry. Daisy also had her wings clipped when we got her. She had so many crash landings till she molted and got her new flight feathers. We agree with you. She's much happier being able to fly. She knows her way all over the house now and follows us whenever we leave the room, even if she's eating!! She wants to be with us or on one of us all the time unless she's sleeping! or out at her "cottage". ~~ Susan

  Hi Again from Daisy
Hey Brain, thanks for the info once again. I get better info from a person like you who actually owns and lives with a bird, than someone who sells them. Altho, she is very knowedgeable and tries to give good advice, she also tries to match up a bird with not only what a person wants and needs, but with their experience level and personality. Still, you live with Rocky, maybe he's the exception, but he sure looks low keyed and layed back in his pics. He's SO cute. Yeah, that's one of my favorite pics of Daisy, too. She sure enjoys her corn on the cob! She's also flighted. Is Buddy? ~~ Susan

  Hi Again from Daisy
Brian, I still don't know what our next bird will be. I spoke with the mgr. of our bird store. She's been there for over 15 yrs. and knows more about birds than almost anyone I know except for the lady that runs the bird rescue in our area. Anyway, I was asking her about the poicephalus, and she said that they were "high strung" and nervous birds. Has that been your experience? Are they really headstrong or stubborn? She said that quakers were, and that you had to establish early on who was boss. I'm just trying to learn all I can so as to make a good and informed decision. I'm still leaning toward a blue quaker, if I could find one for about $250. Do you mind telling me how much Rocky was? It's OK if you don't want to. No problem, just curious. I can't afford an expensive bird plus the cage, etc., etc. It's those etc.'s that'll kill you! Also, is a red-bellied poicephalus and a red-bellied parrot the same thing, do you know? ~~ Susan

  Hi Brian,
Well it's not like I work at it 24 hrs. a day. But she's with me most of the time. So about every 15 min. or so I put her on her perch or hold her over a waste basket, or over the toilet, wherever I happen to be, and tell her to go "poopie". She usually does, but if she doesn't have to go, she just looks at me and tilts her head as if to say "Why are you telling me this? I don't have to go right now." Anyway, if I forget, she'll just go wherever she is, including on me. Then I scold her, which apparantly doesn't do any good, but it makes me feel better. Once in awhile, if we're at the kitchen table (which is where her playstand is), she'll climb up onto her perch and go by herself, but not consistently. When she does this, she usually hesitates and looks around to see if anyone is watching. Because if we're not, she won't get a "poopie treat". And she really likes her poopie treats, millet. If Rocky understands that it isn't nice to go on people, that should be a good starting point. ~~ Susan

  Hi Brian,
Thanks for all the info. I appreciate all the time you took to type it. I have read about keeping the same 12 hour schedule as far as night and day, with sleeping and all, and that longer days do encourage mating behaviors. So I do do that. But I didn't know about the other things. That was very enlightening. I had actually thought about getting her one of those little tents for the winter just to keep warm, since we turn our thermostat down to 60 at night. (You probably can't appreciate that living in Arizona.) But I bought her a peated perch instead because I didn't think that she would go into it. Now I'm glad I didn't. (I should probably be on Buddy's web page, huh?.... since this is about cockatiels.)

On to another subject..... Are either of your birds "housebroken" or potty trained? I've been working with Daisy on this for over a year now, and it's hit or miss----literally. She's very cooperative when she has to go, but rarely does she self-initiate. Thanks for all your time. ~~ Susan

Now you've opened up a whole new can of worms: Buddy's egg laying. Daisy is 1 1/2 yrs. old and has not layed any eggs yet. You said you changed your behavior and her environment because you didn't know what you were doing. What do you mean by that? I've read several books on cockatiels and I don't recall any advice regarding my behavior towards her and her environment, except not to let HER feed ME. I hope I'm not being a bother with all these questions. Thanks for taking so much time to answer me. ~~ Susan (Daisy's Mommy)

  Hey Rocky,
Your Daddy says that you talk, does Buddy? I don't. I just call and make what my Mommy describes as "happy noises". They sort of sound like I'm talking, but Mommy can't understand them. She would like to get another bird (in addition to me), that is capable of talking, but she doesn't want one as big (or as expensive as) an African Grey. So, she's investigating other types. How old were you when you started talking? Is your species known to talk, or are you exceptional? Right now, it looks like a quaker is leading the list. But she's open to other possibilities. Have a great day!:) Daisy

  Hello Brian
I think it's just the red bellied way and his age. Sam did the same thing when he was about that age. I think red bellieds are pretty head strong and along with their bite. Just watch what is happening around you when he bites, you might notice why sometimes so you can prevent it. With Sam at times there really didn't seem to be a reason other than testing me. You are right the more the you react the more they bite. For Sam his worse punishment is going to his cage. I say nothing and put him back right away. lol Sometimes he says good bird? then i say no not a good bird. Since Sam was trying to be boss i never let him get in a postion where he was higher than me, I also kept him off my shoulder for that matter. At least until he got over this. You can also try placing your first finger under the hook of his top bill (top bill dishes power) and thumb on top and hold him so he can't bite sometimes i do this with Sam until he starts to release, then i let go and that has worked for me too. After a bite I have also made him step up over and over a few times. Stepping up works okay but with Sam the other things i mentioned seemed to work better. After Sam turned about two he stopped biting hard and started becoming loving. Sam will however still get upset if i take him out and put him back too soon he has to be out for at least 15 min at a time. Well I have to go to work but hope that helps. Have a good friday!
