  Lifespan of a Diamond Dove
The lifespan of the diamond dove is different in captivity than if living in the wild.

In captivity, the diamond dove usually lives about 12-15 years. With proper care, they can even live into their 20's.

In the wild, however, diamond doves only live 3-5 years.

Doves are relatively quiet birds. They make a variety of soft, low-pinched cooing sounds. Their cooing, however, may be persistent and repetitive. Many people find the cooing very pleasant.

  Supplements
Your dove should be given a vitamin/mineral supplement to assure you are providing all the nutrients it needs, especially if it is a finicky eater.

Note: Although the directions may tell you to put the vitamins in water, this is not good to do. Vitamins can settle to the bottom or lose its potency. It is best to put the supplement on soft foods or moist fruits or vegetables.

In addition to a vitamin/mineral supplement, doves need a small amount of grit. Unlike most birds, doves swallow their seeds whole and grit helps to digest them.

There are two kinds of grit:

Indigestible grit, which is sand or bits of ground rock. However, if your bird overeats this, it can become sick.

Digestible grit such as oyster shell, ground cuttlebone, or crushed eggshells pass safely through their system and is also a good source of calcium.

  A Healthy Diet (Continued)
PROTEIN

In addition to fruits and vegetables, you need to include protein in your dove's diet.

Insects are a good source of protein, although they are not necessary for your dove. You can either give them live insects or dried ones.

Another good source of protein are chopped hard-boiled eggs. This is important for breeding doves that are raising chicks. Crushed egg shells mixed in with the egg will provide calcium with the protein. Note: Eggs must be cooked thoroughly. Your bird can become sick from partially or uncooked eggs.

You can also give your dove tiny bits of thoroughly cooked meat or bits of cheese. However, this should be given only rarely and as a special treat.

  A Healthy Diet
FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

Although all common pet doves are in the seed-eaters group, there are additional foods that can be a part their diet.

Seed-eating doves cannot tolerate large amounts of high-water-content foods. However, a daily treat of fresh food is fine for most doves.

Fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. When choosing produce, (one's that are safe for birds) bright colors are the healthiest choice. Example: sweet potatoes are more nutritious than white potatoes, red peppers have more vitamins than green peppers, and red grapes are higher in antioxidants than green grapes. Dark leafy green vegetables are also nutritious.

Some of the most favorite foods of the dove include:
shredded greens, grated carrots, finely chopped broccoli florets, diced apple, berries, fresh corn and peas. Your dove may not like all these foods, but as you experiment with differents ones, you will find that they may be some of their favorites.

  Doves As Pets
SETTING UP YOUR DOVE'S CAGE

Doves, like other pet birds, need a variety of perches to keep their feet exercised and comfortable. However, they do spend much of their time on the bottom of the cage, as I had mentioned in yesterday's blog. You can remove the wire tray at the bottom of the cage so your dove can walk comfortably. Besides your dove walking on the bottom and pecking for food, they spend a lot of time sitting at the bottom as well.

Doves also enjoy sitting in a nest. You will need to purchase a canary nest or you can make one of your own.

You will not need to purchase anything for your dove to play with. Doves do not play with toys or on a playgym.

PURCHASING A CAGE

When purchasing a cage for a single or pair of ringneck or diamond doves, the measurements of the cage should be at least 24 inches in length, 16 inches wide and 18-24 inches in height.

Unlike parrots, doves do not climb, so the length of the cage is more important than the height.

However, doves do need to room to flap their wings and fly. They also spend a lot of time walking around on the bottom of the cage, so the bigger the cage, the better.

DETERMINING THE GENDER OF THE IMMATURE DOVE

If you decide to purchase a pair of young doves, you may want to buy a male and female.
The only way to determine the gender of the immature dove would be to submit a blood sample for DNA analysis or have your vet examine them endoscopically.

The DNA sexing is simple and noninvasive. It is performed from a drop of blood from a clipped toenail or emerging blood feather.

Some pet stores can have this done for you or your vet can perform the test. You may want to have this done if you are interested in breeding your doves in the future.

  Doves As Pets
INTRODUCTION

Doves are gentle birds that are hardy. They are quiet birds, have a peaceful nature, and don't require as much complicated care as other species of birds. This makes them a good pet for the beginner.
Diamond doves are even good pets for young children as long as an adult supervises the care.
Since doves are quiet birds, they are good to keep in apartments where you may not be able to keep a noisy parrot.

Doves can be kept as single pets or in pairs but they do better in pairs. If you keep a single dove be prepared to give it lots of attention and interaction.

  Introduction to Doves (Conclusion)
Doves are divided into two groups: seed-eaters and fruit-eaters. Fruit-eaters are difficult birds to maintain in captivity and are not suitable as pets. All common pet doves are in the seed-eating group. (However, doves need food, in addition to their seeds, that I will mention at a later time in a blog on diets.) The most common pet doves are the diamond dove and the ringneck dove.

This week I have introduced doves and gave you information, which included their family, their origin,
and even how diamond doves acquired their name. I hope you found this information interesting as well as educational.

Next week, I will provide information on the care of doves as pets.

  The Diamond Dove's Origin,
The diamond dove is native to Australia. They exist near water but where it is lightly or semi-dry, which is in Central, West, and Northern Australia. They are occasionally seen in Southern Australia in parks and gardens in the Centre(the sparsely inhabited central region of Australia) where it is very dry.

As part of my BOTM campaign, I will be taking a trip to my native country to see some of the tourist attractions. If any of my BC friends would like to join me for this adventure, please let me know in your blog.   Hi Lingo
Mom had to get trained to volunteer there, but it's worth it.
It seems things are popping out all over! There are now some crocuses blooming in the yard, and it seems all the tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths are growing by the day. None has bloomed yet, but they're getting taller! It's pouring down rain right now. It rained most of the afternoon, evening, and night yesterday as well. April showers, right?
In between the showers, mom got Polly to walk around the bend in the road yesterday to our neighbor's house and back again. That was a great thing, but today it was even better. When mom came home from the museum it wasn't raining so she took both dogs around the block. Polly walked around a whole block and was fine. This healing seems to be faster than the last one was. Maybe the little trooper knows what to expect now, or she's pushing herself a bit. Whatever it is, she is doing much better this time around. Thanks to those who pray for her, for sure!
Mom had a kindergarten group this morning, and one of the new docent class members followed her tour to pick up some pointers. She hopes he learned a lot. The kids were pretty attentive for being so young. The teacher listed 2 words on her pre-visit sheet: oviparous and extinct. That's really strange, because at that age, most of the kids learn herbivorous, carnivorous, etc. and maybe extinct. Oviparous seemed a weird choice to mom, as many animals are oviparous, including the monotreme mammals. Oh well, hope they learned something at least. They were interested and excited.
I hope you continue to see signs of spring around you and the flowers are getting enough rain to pop out any day now. Get lots of hugs and scritchies today, too. Hugs, Willie

BEAKS

Doves have a narrow beak that is slightly curved at the tip. Unlike most birds, doves drink by sucking up water through their beak like a straw, without tilting their head back to swallow. The base of their beak is relatively soft and hardens toward the tip.

LEGS

Their legs are relatively short and clearly scaled. They have strong feet and nails. Their toes are anisodactyl, which means that three toes are pointed forward and one backward.

  Hi Lingo
Mom volunteers at a wildlife center where they rehabilitate and release sick, injured, or orphaned native animals. It's always an adventure there.
Mom got to the pool for water aerobics this morning, YAY! She was happily surprised to see a substitute teacher there. Mom really likes this lady, as she does routines which are completely different from the usual, and gives everyone a great workout.
Polly continues to improve. In fact, this morning she was really hungry, ate more than she usually does. Her leg looks good, no swelling or hot spots, so that's a good sign. Mom will continue the PT with her and of course, continue with her meds as well.
I think spring has finally arrived! This morning we saw lots of things poking out of the ground, and mom even saw leaf buds on the lilac! That sounds promising, I think. Of course, it's April, so we can expect a lot of rain, but as Dixie's mom says, at least you don't have to shovel rain! Hope you are having a good day and getting lots of love. Hugs, Willie

  Introduction to Doves
HOW THE DIAMOND DOVES ACQUIRED THEIR NAME

The diamond dove has approximately 17 color mutations.
Their normal coloration is brownish gray to gray with an abdomen that is a creamy white color.
Adults have coral-colored eye rings, an olive brown beak, and flesh colored feet and legs.
They have specks on their feathers that looks like they were sprinkled with diamond dust. This is how diamond doves got their name.

  What Are Doves?
Doves are small pigeons, although there are differences between them. Pigeons are larger and stockier whereas doves are smaller and sleeker. However, there are exceptions to this rule.
Both doves and pigeons are muscular with short necks and heads on stout bodies. Their long wings are powered by flight muscles. These muscles can make up to approximately 40% of their body weight.
The diamond dove, which only grows about 6 to 8 inches and weighs approximately an ounce, is the smallest dove.

  Vote Chipper for BOTM,
For those of you who don't know me, my name is Chipper and I am a diamond dove. I will be running in April for the BOTM in May. Since we are not your typical parrot-type pet, I will be sharing with you each day, in a brief blog, some interesting facts on doves.

Your votes are appreciated. Thanking you in advance for your support and leaving a vote too!

Your friend,
Chipper

  Hi Lingo
I missed you, hope you had a fun trip.
Mom had a good time at the event yesterday, even though they were set up in an awkward, narrow hallway where it was difficult for people to get through. Chelsea was a big hit, of course. The volunteer who went with mom for her first outing did well, but mom did have to give her some tips about what to say to people. That's always the way for first timers, though, and mom hopes she volunteers to do more outreach for the center.
The opera was wonderful, as was the dinner beforehand. Mom's niece did the driving, which was good, since mom isn't seeing too well at night and it was raining, which cuts down vision even more. Anyway, the evening was a success, and we were all ready to turn in (again) when mom got home. We got up and greeted her, then settled back down quickly to sleep.
Today mom is doing 2 tours in Dinos at the museum, then she's ours for the rest of the day. I think she's stopping to buy fresh veggies and fruit for us and Maxine first, though. Both of her online courses in Dino and human evolution have been completed, giving her more time with us, too.
I bet the milonga was a lot of fun, sorry we missed it. I hope you are having a good day today and getting lots of love. Hugs, Willie

  Hi Lingo!
I apologize for being so slow but the pirate certificates are all done now. All you have to do is go to the Pirate Pearl page, #227001, and find yours there in the gallery. If you've received any flowers, it's just like going & picking them up at the florist shop.

Glad that you were part of it this year. Thanks of your participation!

Hugs, SamIAm

  Hi Lingo
We are so sorry it has been a month since our last blogging but the parront has been busy working 5am to 1:30pm for the last 8 weeks. She needs to save some money and also to pay home and car insurance. The A/C broke and she does not know yet how much will be the cost to repair it. The weather is getting hot here already. She also needs a new car, so many expenses.

On Monday 24February she got her first injection on the lower back, there was no much improvement after it, last Monday she got 2 more injections on her lower back, so far her lower back is not bothering her. On Monday 31 she will have another injection on the cervical area.

Also the computer is getting slow, and she does not understand windows 8 yet so she could start using her new laptop.

This is our current situation. Since she is very busy we don't know yet when we will be able to blog again.

This is all for know

See you soon
