  Hi BonBon
Birds can be helpful to each other in many ways. The most familiar form of cooperation is when an owl or hawk appears in the neighborhood, causing every songbird within a quarter of a mile to sound alarm calls and even dive at the predator. Perhaps the most interesting form of help is when young birds of the first brood of the year help their parents raise the second brood of the year. There have been many reports of juvenile eastern bluebirds carrying food to the nesting houses containing their parents’ second brood.American crows and Florida scrub-jays demonstrate some of the same cooperative behavior, when sexually immature one-year-olds help their parents gather nesting material, protect the territory, and carry food for the next generation.Cooperation occurs among acorn woodpeckers of the Far West, when groups of up to 10 birds live together, year-round, jointly defending the communal territory, gathering food, and together incubating eggs and feeding the nestlings of each pair in the group.

Sometimes birds of different species lay eggs in the same nest. This has happened among American robins and northern cardinals. The two species take turns incubating eggs, sometimes sitting side-by-side, and jointly feed the young when they hatch. There are also adoptions. For example, a male Carolina wren started feeding an incubating female house wren. When the eggs hatched, the male Carolina continued by feeding the babies, causing both of the true parents to desert, leaving the rearing of their young to the foster father.

This is my last day of my campaign and I want to thank all of you for your help in making my campaign a success. it has been so much fun visiting with each of you every day. i apologize for not being able to answer all your comments individually but i did read every one and enjoyed them very much. i love you all so much.

  Hi BonBon
this is a continuation of birds intelligence from blog on 3-27. we messed up on the order.
Examples of bird intelligence include…
Carrion crows in Japan that deliberately place nuts in roadways, wait for cars to crush the nuts then retrieve the nut meats, all while coordinating around traffic lights to keep safe.
Woodpecker finches in the Galapagos Islands that trim sticks to the proper length for use as tools to forage for insects.
Green herons and other heron species that use bread fed to ducks or picnic leftovers as bait to attract fish for their hunting.
Blue tits in the 1920s that learned which color of milk caps on delivered milk had the most cream (whole milk) and pierced those caps to drink the cream.
Western scrub-jays that hold funerals for dead birds by making loud noises and avoiding the corpse, behavior that may be warning other birds of fatal threats.
Northern mockingbirds that recognize individuals who may be a threat to their nests and will attack only those individuals rather than attacking all passersby indiscriminately.
Aplomado falcons that hunt cooperatively in pairs and thereby increase their hunting success by a large margin through this teamwork.
Jays that cache hundreds of seeds and nuts in fall and manage to retrieve the majority of them over the course of the winter, exhibiting great recall for their hiding places.
Other well known examples of bird intelligence that could be attributed to instinct but still show at least some higher mental capability include:
Amazing nest architecture with intricate construction
Returning to the same ranges, even the same nests, for many years
Ability to navigate migration safely despite changing landmarks
Play behaviors, including taunting cats or playing with objects for entertainment
Recognizing who refills feeders and interacting with that person
Curiosity when responding to pishing or investigating new stimuli
Showing emotions through courtship, caring for nestlings, etc.
Some Are Smart, Some Are Stupid
Like any animal, not all birds are equally intelligent. Ornithologists generally agree that corvids (jays, ravens, crows, rooks, jackdaws, etc.) and parrots are among the smartest bird species and that social, gregarious birds often exhibit more intelligent behavior than solitary species. Still, every backyard birder has seen that one "stupid" bird at their feeders who just can't figure anything out, while another bird of the same species seems to be an Einstein in comparison. Watching birds and witnessing their intelligent behavior can be a joy for backyard birders, and learning more about bird intelligence in quantifiable ways is sure to keep ornithologists busy for decades to come.

  Hi BonBon
The Purpose of Play
All play that wild birds may use helps them develop necessary survival skills. Even adult birds may continue to play and refine their abilities, though not necessarily with the same frequency as juvenile birds play.
Manipulation play helps birds get more coordinated to build nests, capture prey or extract food from different sources. This type of play keeps bills and talons in good condition and builds up the necessary muscle strength and dexterity for intricate actions.
Investigation play teaches young birds about the world they inhabit, including edible and inedible foods and what objects are safe to touch. As birds investigate more, they refine their ability to cache objects and develop their senses.
Chasing play strengthens wing muscles and helps young birds develop greater agility in the air, or for terrestrial birds, strengthens their legs and helps them be more agile when running. This also helps carnivorous birds develop sharper hunting skills.
Taunting play sharpens a bird's reflexes and increases their agility. It also helps them learn to anticipate prey reactions or how to avoid predators, and will be useful for mobbing behaviors or defending their territory.
Balancing play strengthens foot and leg muscles and helps birds learn how to use their wings to counterbalance air currents or disruptions. Balancing can also be useful for different types of foraging or courtship displays.
Curiosity play teaches birds more about their world, expanding their knowledge of both threats and benefits and helping them react to the unexpected. Curious birds can be more adaptable and will be more successful when encountering changes in their habitat.
Mimicry behavior teaches young birds how to act like adults of their species and learn essential skills such as proper sounds and songs or how to use their unique bills or other physical attributes to the best effect.
While different play behaviors all have a purpose in helping birds survive, some birds do seem to play just for the sheer joy and fun of the activity. As with many types of bird behaviors, the exact purpose of all play is not yet understood, even by dedicated ornithologists, but birders can still enjoy watching the playful behavior of birds. Every time they see their feathered friends engage in another game, they learn just a bit more about birds even as the playing birds are learning more about their world.

  Hi BonBon
Birds That Play
All birds engage in playful behaviors, and more intelligent bird species need greater amounts of the mental stimulation that comes from play as they develop. Bird species that can seem especially playful include…Jays, crows, rooks, ravens, magpies and other corvids,Parrots, parakeets, macaws and Keas,Tits, chickadees, nuthatches and small finches,Gulls, terns and related species.
Many social and adaptable birds also play, as do young birds of nearly all species as they socialize with their siblings in the nest. The extent of play and how much play each bird species carries into maturity varies, and different birds engage in different types of play to help them develop a range of skills.
Types of Bird Play
There are many different behaviors birds engage in that could appear to be play. The most common playful actions include…
Manipulation: Using the bill or talons to drop, toss, bend, tear, rip or otherwise manipulate objects, even objects without any food value.
Investigation: Seeking out unique objects or trying a wide range of different foods, continually noting new objects and poking or prodding them.
Chasing: Following one another in short or acrobatic flights, or chasing other objects such as insects or fluttering leaves.
Taunting: Teasing or deliberately harassing one another or other creatures, such as teasing a domestic cat or instigating fights.
Balancing: Swinging, swaying or dangling on wires or weak branches, possibly releasing and reattempting different acrobatic actions.
Curiosity: Responding to pishing or other unique noises, such as being attracted by ringtones, mechanical noises or music.
Mimicry: Imitating an adult's behavior, including physical actions such as foraging or preening as well as songs and sounds.
Not all playful birds will engage in the same behaviors, but they often try different actions and activities as they are learning new skills and refining their abilities. Play may be only between birds of the same species, while some types of play, particularly chasing or taunting, may be between birds of different species.

  Hi BonBon,

It's Parker. I'm sorry I thought I told you everything my Mom's going through. Well, besides Osteoarthritis, Osteoporosis, Degenerative Disc Disease & Spinal Stenosis, the MRI that she just had shows "2" Herniated Discs! The first MRI she had back in 2011 for her back showed 1 but now she has 2! Yes, she was already thinking that possibly The Spine Institute for less invasive surgery IF it comes down to that but she wants to try everything else first.

I can't see Spot's new picture, I only see his Valentine's one. But I am anxious to see the new one.

Here's your vote, cutie.

Love & Winghugs,
Parker (The English Keet)
P.S. Mom thinks she messed up her back this time when she moved her heavy Pine Bedroom Furniture, she has a Dresser with the Hutch and a heavy Chest also. She wanted to vacuum all the dust up before her cleaning girl came to houseclean because she was having her room painted & had a new rug put in. Motrin. Also, the week after next she goes back for her 2nd shot. So she's hoping between all of the above that she'll start to feel better and NOT have to have surgery. Tell your Mom to keep praying for her & I know Mom is praying for your Mom "Too".

See You Soon!

  Hi Bon Bon,

How are you? It's Parker and yes I would love to take you to the Milonga next Sat. (Feb. 21st). But do you think maybe Spot could get Ms. BB's small Shuttle to pick me up and we can all go together? IF your Mommy doesn't mind, I can spend a few days with you if you want me "Too" that is. Also, sorry we haven't been on the computer very much because my Mommy is in so much pain and pain patches and med's are NOT helping her. The stress from all the pain is making her blood pressure go up (192/102) and yes she's been on med's for that, her hair is falling out again (especially when she's stressed) and the worse part of all of this is she can't sleep! Mom can't sleep on her back or stomach because of her bad back and it hurts when she lays on her side because of all the pain in her hips, butt, back and legs. Sometimes I hear her cry out in pain but I also hear her say to stop it because there are so many more people worse off then her. Please have your Mom say some prayers for her, I know my Mommy is saying prayers for your Mom and we all hope she is doing better. Also, my Mom's 60th Birthday is next Sat. (21st) and she's suppose to go to her Brother, Rich's because he's going to be 50 & yes he was born on her Birthday. They are having a Party with a few close Friends and their immediate Family (that's 22 people right there LOL). Mom's hoping she is up to it or at least go for alittle while & then leave. So I'll be quiet next Sat. Mom is excited that she can get a shot in her spine on Fri. Feb. 27th and she can't wait. She may or may not need another one after that but that's okay because her first 2 shots that she got lasted over 2 yrs! IF it doesn't work, she'll have acupuncture and IF that doesn't work, she'll have the operation to at least have the pain removed from her legs. Okay, hope You, your Mom and Spot are having a nice weekend. It's been so cold here in Philly and getting colder. Right now it's snowing like crazy! Here's a vote for you, cutie. Bye for now.

  Hi BonBon and Spot
BRRRRRRRRR, it's freezing out there. I am toasty warm inside and plan to stay that way. No bird with sense would be out there in those minus 20s and colder winds.
I am busy working on my newest toy a green army tank. I spent yesterday finishing my birdsonal testing of a peg board toy before setting my beak to this one. It's a greyt job and I keep busy with it too.
Some birdies think being a one legged bird makes me slow, idle, and unhappy. Heck no. I am fast at getting around, fly, hop and keep up with anybirdie no problem. I believe in life we sometimes encounter things we do not want, like or ever plan on but it is how we deal with them that really matters.
I may have lost my leg through no fault of my own due to an accident but I have one left, my beak, and the fighting heart of an Amazon. Life is good and I plan to live it to the fullest.
Well, back to work I go. Have a wonderful day and HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY for tomorrow. I hope to see you all next weekend the 21st at the Milonga, I will be there with my friend Merlin.

  Hi Bon Bon-
Oh there is always birdsong in our house. Mom Tbird has had finches for probably 20 years, and parakeets before that. Finches, as you probably know, have relatively short lifespans..

There was only one finch left at the rescue from the hoarders house, and we adopted him, named him Phoenix, and introduced him to our finch flock. There were a lot of dead birds at the hoarder's, we were told, and we suspect many of them would have been finches...the bigger birds would've had an advantage....anyway there were 20 pairs of lovebirds, so the moms took one of the pairs with them! And that's how we got here!

Thank you for listening to our story! See you in the kissing booth!

  Hi BonBon
Haha, you and Spot are just too funny!
Our weather is so weird, it rained and was icy yesterday, and today it's raining but about 60 degrees out there!
We don't seem to have avatars or aviaries today, and haven't seen new pics at all. The BOTD spot on the sign in page is blank, but when we clicked on it, we did get to Jewel's page. Hope they can clear this up on Monday. Chyna left a note on the calendar page about reporting problems, so I'm not going to repeat it, but please write to i5 and let them know what's going on if you are having issues.
Today mom slept in, nearly til 9! She's usually up much earlier, but staying up to watch football did her in! The Steelers lost their game, though, so she won't be staying up late to see any more games.
Today mom will go to dinner with her daughter, son in law, and the grands. It will be an early dinner, but that's okay. She also has to get some laundry and shopping done. It should be a good day, unless BC continues to be as slow as it has for the past few days. I hope you are having a good day and getting some attention from your loved ones. Hugs, Peppino

Come visit me, Gizmo, I miss you, sweet boy, Willie, Peppino, Divo & Falco.

  Hi BonBon and Spot
Hello fellow Adventurers, as promised today we will pick the baby's name. Due to the number of names I have made a separate list and posted it onto my page--PLEASE pick one name and let me know your choice--they are all greyt. Remember the baby is a BOY.
Rushing into the food tent, everybirdie places their food on the counter, as Sky and BB get busy cleaning and blending them through the food Processor. "WAIT SKY, not the Blackberry, it's not a fruit it's an ipod." Hulk yells as Sky prepares to drop the blackberry into the mixture.
Spot finishes feeding the baby by regurgitating food into his hungry mouth. "There, all full" he hands the baby back to Sugar who makes a disgusted face and tries not to gag.
"SPOT, you really know what you're doing" Parker says looking sorta nauseated
"THAT was so, owwwww, yuck!" BooBoo says holding her beetle in her beak. "GROSS!" she says, tossing her head back sending the beetle into the air. It falls straight into her beak. "YUMMY! Now that's how I like my food. Fresh, squirmy and crunchy"
"Now, that's GROSS!" Jenny-Lynn says, turning her attention back to the sleepy eyed baby in Sugar's wings. "Finnegan, how'd you like to take a turn watching baby for a while so we Zon Girls can get something for supper?"
Finnegan takes the little fluffy baby gently into his wings, looking at him with soft, wide eyes. "We'll get you home, don't worry little fellow"
The moment is broken by BB's loud yell, "SKY! What are you eating?"
Sky turns red, a large ladle in one wing, his beak full, " NUFFIN"
"Did you eat the baby's supper?" She eyes him and the half empty pot of blended food.
"I just tried a little, you know to be sure it tasted right without the pickles in it" Sky replies
BB shakes her head, taking the pot and ladle away from Sky. "We put this into small jars for our trip, unless you want to feed him?" she says with a shiver.
"We'll take turns BB, we're all pretty good at feeding fingers, hands and toys, so we can all take a turn feeding baby." Kiddo says proudly, smiling at the little sleeping chick, "it'll be good experience for us"
With the baby soundly sleeping in Finnegan's wings, the hungry birds fill up their plates from some of Lizzie and BB's fine cooking at the food tent. With full bellies, they set about fueling the shuttles, packing provisions, and building a bed for baby to sleep in during their long trip up the Amazon River.
"Jenny-Lynn, you really think we'll be able to find the baby's parents in all that Rain Forest?" Sweetie asks as she packs her favorite toy and some extra pellet and Finnegan's bag of Kaytee handfeeding formula into her backpack
"We'll find them. We're Zon's we don't give up, we don't back down and we don't ever break our promise to a baby" Jenny-Lynn says with deep conviction.
"Let's get some sleep and we'll leave at dawn. We need to take turns feeding baby every two hours or whenever his crop is empty, whose first?" Amando asks

  Hi BonBon and Spot
Hello everybirdie, Amando here with our third day's Adventure update. I want to say the names you are coming up with are great. I will post them in Sunday's blog and everybirdie can vote on their favorite choice. The name with the most votes on Monday will be our new name for the Baby Amazon. Talking about baby's I sure hope we can find his Momma soon, he's starting to get pretty hungry.
"Chirp, chirp, CHIRP!!!!!!!!!" the baby cries as he stares at Jenny-Lynn and Sugar who are snuggling him close to help keep him warm. "CHIRP!!!!!"
"He's hungry, what are we suppose to feed him?' Sweetie asks Kaji who is watching from a safe distance. "Do you think Lizzie might cook something for him?"
"I don't think babies eat food like that, he needs special baby food, mushed up bugs, and worms and spiders" BooBoo says, hurrying to bring the baby a nice plump beetle she just caught.
"Boo Boo, stop, baby birds don't eat that stuff, not baby Parrots anyways!" Cori grabs her fister by the wing to slow her down
"That's correct, a baby Amazon needs high protein foods, warm, partially digested and fresh. Fruit, leaves, bugs and other foods the parents find when foraging. Being how young he is, he needs fed every hour or so, from sun-up to sun-set" Jenny-Lynn explains
"Ok, spread out everybirdie, look for fruit, veggies, leaves, and other healthy foods, seeds and nuts especially" Amando directs, as he rushes off in search of dinner for the little hungry fluff ball.
" I have a couple pickles" Sky says loudly, he'll love them!"
"SKY!"" BB frowns at Sky making him turn red, " babies don't eat pickles, and besides what are you doing with those pickles?"
"Look I see a walnut tree" Sky points and tries to get away as fast as he can, but BB follows him telling him all the dangers of too many pickles all the way there.

" It's ok baby, I'll take care of you" Jenny-Lynn tickles the baby under the chin, " we'll get you back to your Momma safe and sound."
"Just wait until I get my beak on those poachers, they'll regret stealing baby Parrots" Sugar adds, an angry glow in her eyes that only Amazons have.
"Let me at 'em, I'll show them a thing or two" BonBon yells in her highest Budgie voice. Spot holds his fister back as she gets worked up over someone stealing baby Birds from their nest holes.
" Look what we found!" Amando says happily as the group of foragers return to join Sugar and JL with their treasures." We have walnuts, chestnuts, oats, wheat, apples, a pear and someone found this, a Blackberry.
" Let's go to the Kissing Booth food tent and get our little friend fed, then we'll get ready to start our trip to Brazil" Amando says eggcitedly.

  Hi BonBon
Hello everyone, Amando here with today's continued adventure BOTM blog. We are certainly heading off into dangerous territory as we return this "Baby" to his parents and flock. I need your help as we face countless dangers, unknown mysteries and spiders. Amando shivers at that thought. We must be fearless, bold and brave.
"AHHHHHHHHH, isn't he cute?" Little Angel says looking softly at the baby in Amando's wings. " Dixie, look, a baby"
"We can't keep him Little Angel, he needs to go home to his parents and family" Amando reminds her
" What is he?" Dixie asks smiling, and making soft coos to the curious bundle of down
"Maybe it's a Conure?" Hulk says
" I think it's some kind of Amazon Parrot" Jenny-Lynn says startling everybirdie, as she moves in closer with Sugar and Sweetie. " Yep, it's an Amazon, too young to know what species but it's an Amazon alright"
"Aren't you just a cute little baby" Sugar says taking the chick from Amando, and hugging him close to her chest. " Don't you worry, we'll get you back home to your parents"
Jenny-Lynn takes the soft fluffy baby and holds him up at eye level. The baby bird coos softly as he looks into Jenny's eyes. "MOMMA?"
"OH NO! I'm not your Momma baby, but I will help look after you until we find her for you" Jenny-Lynn looks around to make sure everybirdie is in agreement. " all of us will go with you and Amando to the Amazon River and take you back home."
" I think the baby needs a name. We can't keep calling him BABY. So, let's think of a name for our little boy baby. Post them on my page and then we will all get to vote on the name we will call our new found friend." Amando says as he watches the girls kissing and cuddling the little down-covered baby.

"Jenny-Lynn, do you think we can get him to Brazil and back home ok?" Sweetie asks, uncertain of what might lie ahead.
"Of course. We will take the Shuttle, I am sure Ms BB will help us out, to Brazil, then travel by foot and boat up the Amazon River until we find our baby's flock, a piece of Avi-cake. You see, it'll be easy." even as she spoke Jenny-Lynn knew the dangers that lie ahead; snakes, dangerous animals, insects and.. "she closed her eyes, and kissed the baby. "It'll be fine Sweet Baby"

  Hi BonBon
I'm Amando and I am your JANUARY BOTM candidate-I hope I can count on your daily votes and support!
Good morning everybirdie, my name is Amando and I am a member of the Sky Flock and this January's BOTM candidate. Not too many of you will know me well as I am one of the quieter frother's of Sky. Bazeball vans might recall that I played on my friend Jenny Lynn's Rain Forest Raiders Team.
I came to be part of this large Sky Flock out of necessity. My Momma Deb and my former owner had been friends for years when the subject of Amazons came up one day in conversation. I had lived in other homes before my arrival at Momma's friends aviary but never seemed to stay too long in any one place. See I am rather loud by some people's standards and have a rather short temper at times. That being as it is, I ended up in a breeding aviary with a large outdoor, indoor flight and a very pretty girl as company. Now to most of you boys out there that would have been a wonderful life. It would have been except that girl, she didn't take too kindly to me being in her home. She attacked me one day and pulled out all the feathers on one wing, and bit my wing so badly they never did regrow. I was so afraid of her that from that day on I hid as far away from her as I could.
That is how I came to once more be looking for a new home. Momma's friend gave me to Momma knowing I would never have to leave again and that I would be safe and happy living out my days as a pet not a breeder. I am still afraid of other birds, and often react very aggressively to their presence. I like Sweetie, so long as she stays in her cage away from me, and we talk all the time. I have even took it upon myself to teach her to scream and yell just like I do. She's doing an awesome job, but I don't get the annoyed looks I sometimes receive when My Momma Deb hears the two of us screaming happily about, well, nothing.
Enough about me. What I really need is your help. On one of my daily walk-abouts I found something, or should I say, somebody. While strolling around on BC I found THIS! Amando holds out a small ball of feathery down with big dark curious eyes for his friends to see. The tiny baby chirps softly, looking from one birdie's face to another. "Momma?" he asks softly
"I need your help. We must return the baby to his parents in South America. He was bird-napped from his tree hole nest by poachers. Getting him there will not be easy. We will have to get him safely back home by taking a trip up the Amazon River. It won't be easy, there will be lots of dangers and risks, but knowing that you faced Black-Bart the Cattle Rustler fearlessly, I am certain we can do this together.
your pal
