Mum's always been a bird person.
Later on when they moved to Australia they owned lots of different birds over the years. After a few birdless years, she thought it was time to get one again, especially since our best friends own 2 gorgeous Eclectus Parrots.
So, after convincing dad, who didn't really want one, she came to the pet birdshop. When i saw her, i flew on her shoulder straight away & tickled her on her neck....it was love at first sight & she just had to have me! It didn't take long for dad & me to become "best mates"!

Love a bit of "everything" they're having!
But my favs are pine nuts, cashew nuts, pineapple, bits of tofu & sweet potato. I broke my beak over 2 years ago, mum & dad had to feed me with a syringe... i loved it! I still get my breakfast that way! It'll be very hard to break the habit!

Mum's or dad's shoulder, snuggling into their necks.
Mum's knees under the desk, when she's on the PC!
My play top on my cage & anywhere my parronts are:
shower, kitchen, dining table etc,!

I don't like mum cleaning my cage, i'm very protective & she has to cop the occassional nip! Also hate the vacuum cleaner!Love to train my voice a bit in the morning & evening, after all, you never know, i might become an operas star one day!

All the attention & love & cuddles & neckscratching they give me & of course all the yummy Yummy food i get & my cage is my castle with lots of lovely toys. They're the best parents one could wish for, i love them to bits too.
I'd say: " I've got it made!"
I'm spoiled rotten!!!

I absolutely LOVE to sing & dance with my dad. I hang on the front of his shirt, while he is singing & dancing to some music. I love the high notes. And when he stops, i scream as long as it takes him to get up again! I also love to grab their hands & show them, where to scratch me!.

  Hi Jivu
July 24th BOTM POST
Hello friends, Zeena the Ballerina here today with a popular, very pretty Australian species. The Bourke's Parakeet and it's mutations . These peaceful, gentle birds make awesome pets for people of all ages and have quite the following here in aviculture. With their calm personalities and soft voices they make awesome additions to any home whether it be an apartment or private dwelling.
I want to again thank each one of you for your wonderful comments and daily votes. If there is a species you would like to possibly see in one of my Posts feel free to mention them.
The Bourke's Parakeets (Neopsephotus Bourkii) are endangered in their own homeland of Southwestern and Central Australia, but are popular in aviculture. They are readily available in the United States and relatively inexpensive. Know the world over for their charming qualities.

The Bourke's parrot has recently been removed from the Neophema genus and placed in a genus of its own. Neopsephotus bourkii. Although discussion continues in this matter. The Bourkes Parakeet is listed on Appendix II of the CITES, as to be monitored and vulnerable. Our hopes is that it will never need to be moved to Appendix I.

They are the only parrot or parakeet that has no green pigmentation in its natural colour. The ‘normal parakeet’ found in its natural habitat is brown on its back area from head to tail with a pink underbelly. Wing feathers can be scalloped with a creamy white to sometimes a pale yellow. They also sport a royal blue on their shoulders, outside flight feathers and tail. A streak of the same blue crosses the top of their eyes. The male will have blue feathers just above his cere. One of the most popular mutations of Bourke’s is better know as a Rosey Bourke’s that is dark to light pink in colour. Today there are a wide selection of mutations available.

I trust you will enjoy the photos I have posted today in the gallery. These are not by-far all the available mutations being bred but gives a wonderful sampling of what is hatching in the world of Bourke's Parakeets.

  Hi Jivu
Hello everybirdie, Zeena here with today's special guests. I had a few problems getting them to settle down and then a few chewed their way out of the box, but finally I bribed them with a few Almonds. Today we pause briefly to visit a few very beautiful and interesting Cockatoo mutations. Cockatoos have been cross species bred for a number of years, giving rise to some odd and uncommon looking individuals. However, the birds we will stop to visit today are natural occurring mutations, some of which have been hatched in the wild. Ok, guys, climb down from there please, it's time to get a few photos.
Cockatoos are found in the wild in only a limited area of the world. They are found primarily in Australia, New Guinea, Indonesia, as well as surrounding areas in the South Pacific.

The cockatoo (of the family Cacatuidae) is one of the most well-known birds in the parrot family because it’s quite noisy; in fact, it’s the loudest of all the parrots. Their loudness comes from a history of having to communicate long distances with one another in dark, thick forests. Cockatoos are found in Australia and some surrounding islands, mainly in forested areas. These birds form flocks, with sometimes up to three different types of cockatoos, to feed together on berries, nuts and seeds. Most cockatoos even stay in the same flock they were raised in and often mate in long-lasting pairs.

Like all parrots, cockatoos are zygodactyl, which means they can use their feet to grasp objects, making them excellent climbers. Although parrots are often colorful, most cockatoos are actually black and white because they lack a certain texture in their feathers that reflects light. In the 1970s, many cockatoos were trapped for the pet trade and their numbers in the wild have decreased dramatically. In fact, some Indonesian cockatoos are now thought to be extinct in the wild. Others are quickly declining due to hunting, poisoning and illegal poaching. Looked upon as pests and nuisances they fight to maintain their territories with ever growing human invasion.

Cockatoos are gregarious, sensitive, demanding and classed as high-maintenance. They have a powerful beak they freely use to chew and tear woodwork and furnishing in homes if left unsupervised. Not a bird for most novices, those who have loved and been loved by one, will forever be a Cockatoo fan.

I hope you enjoy the photos of some of the wonderful mutations available today.

  Good Morning
Well, Mom is always in a hurry to get things done, and at times she doesn't pay attention to details. When she got me from the breeder, the lady gave here a cute little Birdie Hatch Day Certificate, with a baby picture on it. They were so busy talking, neither of them noticed that she got the wrong one. Mom didn't notice either when she was entering information on my page. So she had to go in and correct the hatch date. No wonder I'm still begging to be hand fed. I guess that I'll just have to keep an eye on her when she's doing things on my page. I had to get my nails trimmed yesterday, and I wasn't real happy about that.

  Hi Juvi
we do have a couple of poisonous snakes . mom has seen a copperhead in her garden. this one particular snake is a big black rat snake about 5 feet long, non poisonous, and lives in the crawl space under our house. we had a plumber come and in the process of fixing a leaking toilet he had to knock a big hole in the plaster to get to the pipes. mom keeps asking dad to get it fixed so that black snake doesn't figure out how to crawl up and come through the hole.(go to Boo Boo page and check out the picture of the snake looking in the window at Boo Boos cage)

mom opened up her amazon visa card bill today and saw a fraudulent $850 dollar charge from some anime software company in California she tried to call the tele phone number on the bill but was told they only accept emails and then when mom tried to email them they said mom didn't have an account with them so she reported it to the credit card company and hopes it all can be straightened out

  Hi Jivu
Hello everyone, Zeena here with a special tribute to my frother Lupe'. Lupe' left us recently after he sustained severe injuries to his feet by another bird. Rest in peace, "Momma's Special Boy! I love you forever!"
Today's special Parrot is the Tucaman Amazon. This post was very difficult for me to write.

The Tucumán Amazon (Amazona tucumana) is native to Northern Argentina where it is found in the provinces of Tucumán, Salta and Jujuy as well as Southeast Bolivia in provinces of Chuquisaca and Tarija. They prefer forested areas between 3,400 and 7,300 ft; but may migrate to lower altitudes in autumn and winter. They inhabit woodland areas . The main concentrations of this species in Bolivia occur in Montes Chapeados, Villa Serrano and Tariquía Flora and Fauna National Reserve, with 1,643 individuals recorded at various sites during a recent study) A dedicated national population census and monitoring initiative is required to provide an accurate estimate of the Bolivian population and to locate, measure and monitor local populations and post-breeding roosts.

The Tucumán Amazon is a mostly green, short tailed parrot 31 cm (12 in) long. The green feathers of the upper-body have black margins. There is red plumage on the forehead and fore-crown, and the red does not extend around the white eye-rings. It has red primary wing feathers and no red at the bend of the wing. It has orange thighs and red at the base of the green tail. They have a horn colored beak, orange-yellow irises, and pinkish-grey legs. The male and female are identical.

This species is classified as Vulnerable as it is experiencing a rapid population decline owing to habitat loss and capture for the cage bird trade. On the CITES APPENDIX 1 trade is now illegal, but in Country trade has not been enforced. These rather plain individuals were not of primary concern to breeders when imports were allowed owing to their low ability to learn human speech. Therefore there is a limited gene pool of breeding lines available worldwide.

Lupe'; bold, protective and gentle. An awesome and devoted pet. Limited in speech he made it up in love, entertaining antics and personality. If protective measures are not put into place in their wild habitat, these gems of the Amazon family will disappear.

Fly free little frother, we all miss you, but we will see you again!

  Hi, Jivu
How wonderful to be able to host the young relatives from Germany. Gives 'em family to visit and place to stay while they eggsplore a foreign country. Our skinsis and her friend did the same thing when they were 18. Off to England, stayed with her friend's relatives and had a blast. (No one would take 'em to see Stonehenge though as it is just a bunch of rocks and they couldn't find Abbey Road - even though the relatives live in that area!) Know those kids will return home with lots of memories and eggsperiences.

We won't worry if we don't see you, but await news on how the market goes.

After three days of humid weather we hope today is back to normal, but at least temps weren't too high for us. No rain here either.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

It's been raining here the last couple of days. Very unusual for us. Momma is doing a happy dance cause the temperatures are cooler than normal too. I am finally starting to get some feathers back. I am still pulling out my tail feathers to moms dismay. Mom shakes her head cause she sees me pull and squawk cause it hurts. She asks me why I do it it but I can't tell her why. Sigh. Mom is just happy that I look like a half naked chicken now instead of a completely naked chicken. I must say it's little warmer too lol. Have a great day. V4U. Hugs.

After all the rain, yesterday late afternoon the sunshine finally returned ! And it cooled down too - in the high 50's overnight ! In time for dad to do a London broil on the grill - with corn on the cob ! ! YUMMY in my tummy !

Today mom has lots of errands to do - one of the window fans died :( Daddy likes the "white" noise they make - says it helps him sleep, mom just likes that it brings fresh air in. The a/c stays off unless absolutely necessary - like when mom's cooking.

Meanwhile, I worked on my heap till my Laura came and cleared just about everything out that mom brought home ! Then she played with me till my night-night time :)

HAPPY HUMPDAY
the other day mom was pulling lots of weeds in the garden and she noticed her little bunny pal standing right beside her right beside her.(don't know if you had heard previous posts about the bunny but it always hangs around mom when she is outside working). anyway a hornet or wasp or something stung mom on the arm. mom screamed and the little bunny ran away. the sting really hurt. mom has been stung before but it never hurt like this one. her arm swelled up and she was in quite a lot of pain.three days later and moms arm is starting to feel better. the swelling has gone done and it now longer hurts. it is just very very itchy at this point.

the little bunny seems to like living under our japanese maple tree and hopefully its far enough away from the big black snake that lives near the house. when ever you walk over to the tree the little bunny comes out to see you. mom is trying very hard not to feed it or become too attached. mom took a picture of the little bunny and will post it soon.

  Hi, Jivu
Another slightly humid day for us. Not too bad as overall temps are only 80s and no rain for us either. Think if the market has places that are protected from rain then should still get shoppers. Many people get bored being stuck inside on a rainy day and go shopping.

Good to keep out of the paint fumes. Mom's work had their flooring stripped and waxed. Says it smelled and took 'em two days as they did half each night. Looked better though.

Sounds like you had a fun time with the bath in the sink. We don't care for baths but occasionally get spritzed in the shower. Have to admit the feathers do feel very fresh and smooth afterwards.

  Hi Jivu
Hi everybirdie. Zeena here today with another very unique and endangered bird that is fighting for survival .The Nicobar Pigeon.
The Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is a pigeon found on small islands and in coastal regions from the Nicobar Islands, east through the Malay Archipelago, to the Solomons and Palau. It is the only living member of the genus Caloenas. They drink water without having to raise their heads in the process; their chicks are helpless at birth but develop at an amazing pace . What is more, they forage for fruits of plants that have evolved with them the entire time. The Nicobar is planning and planting forests as they forge and eat.

It is a large pigeon, measuring 18-22 inches in length. The head is grey, like the upper neck plumage, which turns into green and copper hackles towards the breast. The breast is grey. The tail is very short and pure white. The rest of its plumage is metallic green. The cere of the dark bill forms a small blackish knob; the strong legs and feet are dull red. The iris is dark. Females are slightly smaller and less colorful.

The Nicobar pigeon roams in flocks from island to island, sleeping on offshore islets where no predators occur and spends the day in areas with better food availability,. Its food consists of seeds, fruit and buds, and it is attracted to areas where grain is available. A gizzard stone helps to grind up hard food items. Its flight is quick. Unlike other pigeons groups fly in columns or single file, not in a loose flock. The white tail is prominent in flight when seen from behind . The young birds' lack of a white tail is a signal of their immaturity clearly visible to an adult Nicobar pigeon, it is obvious at a glance which flockmembers are neither potential mates, nor potential competitors for mates.

This species nests in dense forest on offshore islets, often in large colonies. It builds a loose stick nest in a tree. It lays one elliptical faintly blue-tinged white egg.

Nicobar pigeons are hunted in considerable numbers for food, and also for their gizzard stone which is used in jewelry. The species is also trapped for the local pet market, but as it is on CITES Appendix I, such trade is generally illegal. Internationally, captive breeding is able to supply the birds demanded by zoos, where this attractive and unusual bird is often seen. Direct exploitation of the species, including the illegal trade, might be sustainable on its own; however, its available nesting habitat is decreasing. The offshore islets which it requires are often logged for plantations, destroyed by construction ,or polluted by nearby industry. Also, increased travel introduced predators to the breeding sites, and colonies of the Nicobar pigeon may be driven to desert such locations or be destroyed outright. There is an estimated 1,000 adult birds remaining, its long-term future is increasingly being jeopardized.

  Hi Jivu
Glad all is well and you don't have to go back for another year. I go 2 or 3 times a year. My next vet visit is August.
Sounds like this time will be better for your mom. That hand-made market is perfect!
It rained hard all day with a high of 56 degrees. Squawk, squawk, quack, squawk ...ooops! I think my feet are getting webbed!!!! I thought I saw an ark go by. I hope every one is having a nice week.
Hugs

  Hi Jivu
Bet DIL was quite happy with the purse your mom made her too! Mom says the vet I have had all my life has left where I always went and guess he went elsewhere. Where he was it was an hour away but the other place he went is even further plus he is only in two nights a week so mom found this other vet that is closer for us. Mom says we will go to meet him tomorrow so I hope he is nice and a good vet. “All you need in life is a friend who has millet” Leaving a vote for you …your forever friend. Gus (RIP Chi chi)

  Hi Jivu
July 15th BOTM POST
Hello everyone, Zeena here with today's topic. The African Grey Mutations. Please note that all mutations occur spontaneously. A hybrid is made by combining two species from the same family group. Mutations do occur in the wild, but often fail to survive due tot heir coloration making them easy prey.
Several mutations occur naturally in the wild, like the F2 Pied Mutation, which results in a broad red band across the abdomen. 1998 saw the first created Grey mutation when South African bird breeder Von van Antwerpen and New Zealand partner Jaco Bosman selected F2 Pieds and created the first red African Grey. These early red pigmented Greys sold for more then $250,000 US each. Since the early 1990s red-factored Greys were being caught in the wild and sold to breeders who in turn attempted to propagate the coloration. This first red baby saw the beginning of a number of spontaneous mutations occurring all around the world.
Today there are a large number of beautiful, rare mutations available to breeders and collectors. Each mutation possesses the same personality traits, intelligence and healthy composure as their normal Grey relatives. Although some argue that mutation breeding weakens the lines, to date this has not proven to be true, since these mutations occur from F1-2 generation parents, and often from visually normal grey parents who carry the mutation coloring.
Today we will stop and take a look at several of the more common, and some fairly new and uncommon mutations available. Each has it's merits, and following. It takes many years and generations to stabilize a new mutation to breed true-to-type. Dedicated breeders work hard to breed the strongest, healthiest birds from the chosen mutations. The road to success it wroth with pit-falls and disappointments, but the desire to perpetuate their selected mutations makes it a labor of love to continue onwards.
Most of the mutations shown today in the gallery are unavailable to the public. Those that are sell from $5000 to over $150,000US each. I hope you enjoy seeing these beautiful birds, some for the very first time.

  Hi, Jivu
Glad you recovered from that awful trip to the vet even if the visit itself went well.

Got a tad humid here yesterday. Not the norm for us, but wasn't too bad as temps weren't that high but still best to stay inside. We would love some rain to come of it but so far nothing.

Good to rest the hands after making so many things. We know your mum has lots of different stock on hand for the next market and hope she does well there.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

Come visit me, Pearl & Silver.

  Hi Jivu !
I'm glad you recovered from your torture . . . we have had rain for a couple days now and at least one more dark dreary day here. Dad stayed home with me yesterday - last week his sister had a car accident and the police report doesn't match the damage so dad took her to take some more pictures for the insurance company. I always thought the insurance companies did that . . . isn't that what we pay for ? I know ours did when the tree fell on mom's car a couple years ago during that freak October snow ! Anyway the upside of this was he was home most of the day to play with me !

Good luck to mom with the upcoming crafter's market !

Love you ! Cookie

  Hi Jivu
July 14th BOTM POST
Hello everybirdie, Zeena here to start of this week with a visit to one of the planet's wonders in the avian field. It was a special request from our dear friend Mr. Kiddo. We need to be very quiet as we visit these unique and highly endangered gems of the bird world. I wish to thank everyone for their votes and input.
The kakapo (Maori: kakapo, night parrot), also called owl parrot, is a species of large, flightless, nocturnal, ground-dwelling parrot of the super-family Strigopoidea found only in New Zealand. It has finely blotched yellow-green plumage, a distinct facial disc of sensory, vibrissa-like feathers, a large grey beak, short legs, large feet, and wings and a tail of relatively short length. A combination of traits make it unique among its kind; it is the world's only flightless parrot, the heaviest parrot, nocturnal, herbivorous, visibly sexually dimorphic in body size, has a low basal metabolic rate, no male parental care, and is the only parrot to have a polygynous breeding system. It is also possibly one of the world's longest-living birds. Its anatomy typifies the tendency of a bird's evolution on oceanic islands, with few predators and abundant food: a generally robust physique, quick movement efficiency at the expense of flight abilities & reduced wing muscles, . Like many other New Zealand bird species, the kakapo was historically important to the Maori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. It was hunted and used for both for its meat as a food source and for its feathers . It was also kept as a pet.
The Kakapo lays one to three eggs in a ground concave usually only raising one or two chicks per breeding season. The species is in a critically endangered position due to poaching, habitat distraction and the introduction of predators such as feral cats. Man's infringement on their breeding territory is causing a drastic and rapid decrease in numbers with only 6 chicks in 2012 surviving to maturity. A key part of the Recovery Plan is the supplementary feeding of females. The kakapo breeds only once every two to five years, when the Dacrydium cupressinum (rimu), produces protein-rich fruit and seeds. Observations of the relationship between intermittent breeding and the plant's mast year help biologists choose which suitable supplementary foods to increase kakapo breeding frequency. In 1989, six preferred foods (apples, sweet potatoes, almonds, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds and walnuts) were supplied to 12 feeding stations. Males and females ate the supplied foods, and females nested on Little Barrier Island in the summers of 1989–91 for the first time since 1982, although nesting success was low. In March 2014, with the kakapo population having increased to 126, it sits on the verge of extinction. As man's awareness of their plight becomes known it is hoped that Conservation efforts will see a greater success in breeding these wonders of the Parrot World.
