  Hi Popeye
Mom says if there were a free movie day here, she'd be at the movies every week. It's a nice thing to do.
Mom had an evolution tour with 7th grade folks today. It was a lot of fun, but it's hard to get that information done in one hour! They started with the fossils in the main hallways, then went into some Paleozoic and Mesozoic areas. By the time they got to Cenozoic, the time was up!!! Mom knew they had another hour on their own, so she suggested they look at the mammals in cenozoic, and go to the second floor to see modern mammals, and hit the third floor for birds. It's too bad they don't schedule 1 1/2 or 2 hour tours for that subject, though. The teacher with the group asked mom if she could schedule her family for a tour with a docent, so mom gave her information and told her to get in touch with visitor services.
It started out rainy this morning, but it sure looks pretty now. Maybe mom will get to the pool this afternoon, just for a little while. They open late this week and next, so if she goes, it will just be for a little while before dinner.
I hope you are having a great sunshine filled day, and getting lots of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Popeye & Flock
Happy Tuesday everybirdie, Sweetie here with your BOTM blog for the day. I so enjoy the blogs, I read them each and sometimes twice in case I missed anything. Such great information is available right here among our BC friends. It's been a rather eventual few days. Momma Deb was called on to take in an older Cockatoo, but through many conversations was able to keep him safely in his own home. This poor M-Too was severely plucked and sported a rather nasty hole ( self-inflicted) on his neck. His past owners moved suddenly and gave up him, and an Amazon to a fellow local rescue who deals with small species only. Hola, as he is named was fostered into a home of experienced Companion Parrot owners with no Too experience. After Momma told them about the need for blood work to test for diseases, need to have the wound treated by the Vet and to discover, if possible the reason he is plucking, Hola is now at an Avian Vet under-going treatment.
We, BC Companion Parrot Ambassadors have so much we can share, so much to give to the Avian World. So many of you have done so much to help others learn about life shared with a feathered Fid. Everytime you suggest a good food to someone eying various foods for their Parrot at home you are making a World of difference both to their Bird and also to those whom speak with. It does matter. A few shared words of wisdom can save an innocent Parrot years of neglect, or re-homing. It is better to dissuade someone getting a bird, then remaining silent. From experience I see it often here, in my forever home. People visit, and OH I LOVE THAT ONE! I always wanted one of those? What is it? Can IT talk!? Oh they certainly are told the facts no holds barred. We are loud, messy beyond words, destructive sometimes, expensive, eat only the best out-of-season fruits and can be down right nasty when upset, hormonal or angry. People leave with a new understanding of life with a Parrot. It is not all that TV version of the Macaw on the shoulder talking in cognitive sentences, or a small, flitting bird singing happily in its barred prison.
Mom says she is going to keep close tabs on Hola, so he doesn't fall through the cracks, and disappear forever. She has arranged with the very BEST Cockatoo Sanctuary she knows of in Canada to take him there to live forever. There he will be safe, cared for and loved dearly by the owner, and volunteers.
I want to encourage everyone to get involved in some small way. Some of you have done quite a lot to education people about Companion Parrots. Not everyone has that ability, but we can all offer to be an advisory, to offer help to owners through animal shelters, or a Vet office. You might be surprised how willing they are for someone to refer people to with bird problems.
PLEASE keep sharing your stories they are fabulous.

Come visit me, SKY, Little Angel, jesse & SWEETIE, Let's talk Parrot for May's BOTM.

  Hi Popeye
Well, when Mom got home from zumba at the gym, she thought she was going to take me out for a sunbath. In fact, she actually did. However after we were out there for less than 5 minutes, Mom decided it was definitely not warm enough, even though it was 1:30 and the warmest part of the day. A cool breeze was blowing, and Mom didn't want to take a chance on my getting chilled. So in we came. Seemed pretty silly to me.

However right after that Mom heated up some enchilada pie for us to share, so I was a happy boy.....till she called me enchilada breath, that is. A guy can't help it if he smells like what he eats, now can he?

And then we tried to blog, but obviously the working out I have been doing has my beak just too darned strong. I was opening the desk drawers even with Mom trying to hold them closed. So she is telling you my story, but I am back in my room. Phooey!

  Hello Popeye~
I hope you are having a wonderful day! The pool is finally filled up but it was a bit of a disappointment. There is a room across from the pool which mom says is the control room. They just turned on the faucets and filled it up! Sort of like a bathtub but bigger. Not very exciting at all.
Mom made me some macaroni and peas to cheer me up! Mandy just loves macaroni and cheese so mom baked a pan to give her a treat also. She is a very happy dog! She spent the morning ripping up the wee wee pads and tossing the pieces side to side. Since I do that with the newspaper at the bottom of my cage, I can't say a thing! Mom didn't seem too happy that she ripped them up. They were unused by the way!
I'm off to supervise kitchen cleaning! Mom says if you cook you gotta clean! I didn't cook so I'll just supervise! In mom's case, she cooked and went to the movies yesterday so she has to pay the price!hahahahahaha She saw Tomorrowland and enjoyed it so she says it was worth it!
The ceremony at the stadium yesterday was awesome. Thank you to you and the honor guard. It was a fitting way to remember our fallen hero's!
I hope your day is spectacular! Leaving a vote and a big hug!

  Remember Our Heroes!!
Hi Popeye,

Well, this Memorial Day has been a good one for food. After two days of prep, Dad put two enchilada pies in the oven to bake. Fresh roasted chile peppers and fresh ground dried chiles, fresh cilantro, Mexican cheese, corn tortillas and best of all the meat: Pastor (Mexican BBQ) from the Valley Market butcher's shop. Lots more stuff, but it is all Dad's secret recipe. Mom and I shared a bowl, and Mom's mouth wanted more even when her tummy said enough.

However there are much more important things to think about today. Mom's dad served in WWI, but he got sent over right as things ended and never had to fight. Her brother served a tour in Viet Nam, but he was in the Signal Corps and never had to shoot anyone. Over the years many others were not so lucky, and many others never came home at all. Let's take a minute to remember their sacrifices. And if you haven't read the Memorial Day Program on the Calendar page, you will want to get on over there and check it out. Great job Director Popeye!

Head bowed in gratitude,
Kiddo

  Hi Popeye & Flock
Hello everybirdie, Sweetie here on this damp, dull Monday herein Napanee, Ontariot. With less then a week left in this month, I wanted to take a brief look at a few of the blogs you left on my page to share with everyone. I have enjoyed reading all of your comments, and encourage everybirdie to share in the discussion. I was reading this morning and came across Miss Chyna's blog. It brought back many memories to me about my beginnings here in the Sky Flock. Chyna was very blessed indeed that her Momma and Daddy found her when they did. Dirty, hungry and sick she was being sold to whoever had the money to take her away. What a shame some people look at us and only see a value sign written in dollars. My story as you all know was different, but in a sense was also based on money.
Sometimes birds arrive into home with hidden illnesses, but there are a lot that were sold or given away because they were sick and their former owners did not or could not afford the money to have them treated by a Veterinarian. I am asking to see how many of you were outwardly ill when re-homed? How many were being housed in sub-standard, dirty conditions? How many of you were without food, or being given poor, low quality or incorrect foods?
My Momma Deb feels there should be standards set for those who retail Companion Parrots whether a private owner or as a business (Pet Stores, Breeders etc). In general the animal welfare laws of our countries are behind the times, lack sufficient depth to make necessary changes, and fall short in the juridical system. Laws set to protect us many times lead to fines, or a probational period of "owning or possessing an animal." Many of you may recall the tragic murder of Ozzie an CAG in Alberta Canada. Stolen from her front porch and brutally abused her murderers, three teens got away with a crime that united the Parrot World to fight for stiffer sentences, and more explicit laws to be written to protect ALL animals.
Many have shared this month that they have seen sick Companion Parrots sold in Pet Stores. Often when this fact is brought to staffs attention, they shrug it off and do nothing. Few chain stores will spend the money to take an ill bird to a Veterinarian for treatment. After all it effects their profit margin. Many times when an ill bird is pointed out it is removed from the display cage to die alone in the back of the store. Some stores even have made it their "policy" that sick animals, birds included be "humanely" killed by placing it into a box in their freezer. That is not humane, freezing to death, alone in the dark. Some stores have admitted that they are told by "head-office" that this is how they are to treat sick animals in the store.
Bird Channel members are a small group, but we have a voice to cry out for changes. We are not a commodity. We are loving, feeling, sensitive Creatures that deserve respect, care and to be loved for who we are!

Come visit me, SKY, Little Angel, jesse & SWEETIE, Let's talk Parrot for May's BOTM.

  Hi Popeye
Thanks for the ceremony at Kevlar Field today. I was afraid we'd miss it this year, without the teams. That was a huge cookout! Good thing mom and dad made the extra eggs, they will enjoy them.
Today we are remembering those who gave their lives for our country. Mom's parents both served, and mom's brother just brought out a newspaper article from WWII honoring her dad and 3 of his brothers who were all serving. the article mentioned the silver star her dad earned, too.
Folks at the center were busy this weekend. They got the shade cloth over a new enclosure where they will keep more hutches for RVS species like ground hogs and skunks, and built 2 new aviaries to share the same space. The good news is that there's only one groundhog out there right now. She also did outdoor raccoon areas today. After a sweaty morning at the outdoor cages, she put up possum food, did dishes and a little filing before coming home to change for the pool.
The afternoon was glorious, lots of folks at the pool, lots of sunshine as well. Now mom is home where she will water plants if it doesn't rain, take care of us, and make a little dinner. Tomorrow morning mom has an eye appointment, so we will try to get online, but if her eyes are dilated or scratchy, maybe not until late in the day.
I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of sunshine, cuddles, and scritches. Hugs, Falco

I hope you are having a wonderful day! Still cloudy and cool up here but no complaints.
Mom and Ian are going over to the mall to see Tomorrowland. Jennifer isn't interested so she is staying here with us! Mandy is doing just fine today. Ian and Jennifer were a bit nervous when mom left for work last night. Ian kept asking what to do if Mandy had another seizure and mom told him just to pet her until it passed. I think Ian is afraid she might die while mom is gone and he wouldn't be able to handle that too well. The vet said that as long as it wasn't a long seizure she would be okay. It's just part of the end stage of her disease. We will just take it one day at a time!
Enjoy your day and I do hope you get to relax and enjoy every minute!

...how do ya figure that our first line of protection, puts their lives in the line everyday and the African American community wants them gone, maybe so they can sell their drugs and loot stores unimpeded! There is no laws in that country, perhaps we could ship them back where they might be happy! It is getting so OLD! We want to wish all our dear BC friends a happy and safe Memorial Day! We had tornado watches and warning all around us, and several touched down just across the Mississippi River, but very little damage or so we are lead to believe! Our rain was minimal at best, so no worry about flooding! We have more coming today but hopefully not to much of anything!   Hi Popeye and flock
Hello everybirdie, Sweetie here on this Memorial Day long weekend. I again must say I am sorry for missing yesterday but Momma Deb had to visit a very talented Indian Ringneck named Max to clip his nails for his Momma. Problem is to get there was a very long drive across country. Needless to say Max looks great, and to make up for the nail grooming he received a Chuey's Chewable Bird Toy Creations, round peg boards to play with.
Max's Mom had contemplated adding another fid to the household. However after talking to my Momma she has decided to keep on loving Max and an pass on adopting another Parrot. Max is quite spoiled, and very well cared for and love. I doubt he would have been any to happy to see another Companion Parrot moving in on his home territory.
The conversation over lunch drifted to the topic of Parrots of course. Max's Mom had recently watched a television commercial telling people to Adopt! Don't Shop! for a Companion Parrot. She had never seen the commercial before and it caught her off guard, but also made her begin to think. She does not recall the name of the Rescue other then it was in the USA. How wonderful it would be if Rescues could come together to finance, through donations and Corporate sponsors television advertisements or magazine advertisements encouraging Adoption of Parrots over buying from a store/breeder/bird Mart etc. Companies advertise to cause consumers to purchase brand "A" over brand "B". I am certain it would work on potential owners of Companion Parrots in like manner. If even one Parrot was adopted from each Rescue what a difference it could begin to make.
Parrot ownership ( ugh, I dislike that term) is a privilege, not a right. When the World begins to realize this truth, we Parrots will begin to gain the respect we rightfully deserve. Our friendship can not be purchased, forced from us or bullied out of us. We are wild flying Creations that were meant to spend our days being Parrots, not a cage ornament or room accent. While on FB today I saw someone's cool off-handed comment to a Parront who has just lost a fid. Suggesting she buy another to replace her baby. It is sad to think this person is someone who has a bird. Love from a Companion Parrot can not be purchased with all the money in the World. You have to earn it, on our terms.
NOW FOR TODAY'S QUESTION; Please share with us one or two of the hurls you encountered when first bringing home your fid(s). Also how about some of the best, most touching moments as well. The greatest over-coming moment when you just knew you and your Fid were happily bonded for life!

Come visit me, SKY, Little Angel, jesse & SWEETIE, Let's talk Parrot for May's BOTM.

  Hi Popeye
Well, Mom took off for the gym this morning in spite of her left shoulder flaring with arthritis. Lucky for her the Tylenol kicked in right before she started her session with Becky, because it was a tough one! Then she did zumba, and boy was she sweaty and tired after that. This time she made me wait to see her till after her shower.

However it is warmer today, and when she was clean we went outside for a nice sunbath. It was a perfect temp of 72 at 1:15, and so it would probably not have been warm enough any earlier anyway. Mom forgot to bring me out a nutriberry, and believe it or not Dad went and got me one and gave it to me. It is the first treat I have ever taken from his fingers. Of course, I was in my outside carrier and couldn't bite him, but I didn't even try! Mom says it is a sign I am mellowing towards him after 11 years, but Dad says I will hate him forever. I wonder who is right?

Meanwhile there will be no BBQ here for the holiday, because there were no decent steaks on sale yesterday. So instead Dad is making his famous enchilada pie! It takes all day, so he is making it today to eat tomorrow. Mom and I shared leftover Chicken Bowl for lunch which was just fine by me.

Wow, that's a lot of eggs! Hope you have enough hot sauce to devil them just right. Hope the BBQ is a good one, too, even though your dad dislikes crowds. It should be fun.
Yesterday mom found ribs at a good price, and baked them last night so she could cut and freeze individual portions. We don't cook out, because mom is alone and has no need for a grill, so she will barbecue them in the toaster oven at some point. Our neighbor brought corn on the cob, too; today we all got corn! (Well, I got a couple of kernels to see if I would eat them, and the boys and Maxine got slices of corn on the cob to eat.)
The pool opened yesterday. Mom went up for about 3 hours, and got a bit of sun. All her friends who sit in the same spots were there, so they all got caught up on each other's lives. It's funny, they don't see or talk to each other all winter long, but they are still friends.
We have a new iris in bloom, mom thinks it's called wildebeest or gnu or something like that. It's striped purple and white. We'll try for a pic and see if anyone can identify it. Mom doesn't remember where it came from.
Today is a pool day for a couple of hours, then mom has to go to a double birthday party. Her grand nephew and her grand niece are celebrating their 11th and 10th birthdays, respectively. The little girl plays softball, and is pretty busy every weekend, so they decided to combine the parties into one. That's fine with mom, for sure!
I hope you are having a bright sunshiny day and getting lots of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Popeye
Well, it is definitely not sunbath weather here today. It was t-shirt weather when Mom and Dad did the Saturday grocery run at 11, and Mom thought maybe it would warm up enough. It got cooler! However I am happy to say that the sugar snap peas were the best Mom has seen in a while, and after they got back there was a Chicken Bowl run and I of course got to share my mom's. Dad watched me gobbling away, and he said I was an example of "when pigs fly!" Now what do you suppose he meant by that?

Anyway it is supposed to start warming up tomorrow, so I am eggspecting a nice sunbath after Mom gets home from the gym. Wonder if she will shower first and make me wait. I don't care if she is sweaty, but she seems to have a problem with it.

  Hello Popeye~
I hope you had a great day too! It got cloudy and cooler here today so I don't think anyone is missing the pool. They painted it today and then put the lights and the filter covers back on. It is now ready for water when it dries.
Mom has to drive Jennifer down to her dads house tomorrow. The doctors have been checking him ever since he has the heart attack and found he has a leaky heart valve. He is going to have to have surgery to fix it and Jennifer is worried. Mom thinks it will be okay since they do so many of those kinds of surgeries. They haven't scheduled it yet but we keep him in our prayers everyday.
Mom went over to Costco today and it was very crowded. They had all the registers open so it really didn't take long to get out of there. She brought back some lovely blueberry muffins and Mandy, Merlin and I shared one! Yes, the cat likes blueberry muffins!
I hope your evening is just wonderful! Leaving a vote and a big hug!
Love you ~ Sugar ♥

  Hi Popeye and flock
Happy, healthy Friday to everybirdie. It's looking to be a great long-weekend for all my BC friends in the US. I am very delighted by the responses you are sharing with us. I hope everybirdie takes the time to read them too. There is a lot to consider when it comes to sharing your home with a Companion Parrot. When my Momma Deb started with birds, there was so little written about them it was a hit or miss situation when it came to care, housing and health. Today, with the internet at our finger tips, and countless books on various species, self-educating is a joyous and necessary component to be availed by all. We never know it all, and learning is a life time effort. Everyday with a Companion Parrot offers opportunities to observe or learn something new and valuable.
Many of us wish to adopt a new fid into our homes, hearts and flocks but there are so many considerations beyond species to work through. I must say this topic was brought to me by our dear friend Eva Kline of the famed K K Koral. It is something we need to look at when thinking of the addition of a brand new flock member in an established flock. That is the dreaded "quarantine" .
It would be the very rare home that can provide us with "IDEAL" conditions to quarantine an incoming bird. So with this knowledge what can we do? and what is not ok to do? To correctly quarantine a new Parrot you need a room, that is supplied with it's own source of air, preferably filtered intake and exhaust. Many Avian diseases are air-borne. Simply separating a new Parrot from the flock within the same household does not prevent contamination and disease spread through the air, air vents and whenever the door is opened to care for the new comer. The false belief that changing your clothing, shoes etc after caring for the new comer WILL NOT prevent the spread of disease.
By definition all quarantine of Avians is to be done in a building separate from ALL other birds in a flock. It must have it's own air filtration system to prevent spread of airborne disease particles and be tended by someone who does not come into contact with other Parrots during the quarantine period. Separation of the flock and new comer by floors within the same home is not considered fully quarantined. Although changing clothes, shoes and showering before entering and after being in contact with the new fid will work greatly to help stop cross infection.
The recommended method of quarantine suggests that all incoming new flock members have TWO sets of blood testing done at intervals advised by your Veterinarian to screen for Avian diseases. However, unless the Parrot is shedding a virus, a false negative can occur.
NOW FOR TODAY'S QUESTION: what other suggestion do you have for bringing home that new flock member?

  Hi Popeye
Hope you get some rain; it is gone from our forecast.

I lost Mom to the gym as usual this morning, but she did come home promptly and sit with me even before her shower. Of course, that was because the heater in my room is on the same circuit as the bathroom....she needed to make sure I was warm enough that she could turn mine off first. (Can't run both heaters at the same time without blowing the circuit.) She claims it was because she couldn't wait to see me, but I am not buying it.

This is a three day weekend, which means I have to put up with Dad being here for an extra day. I do have to admit he is handy for opening the screen door when we come in from a sunbath, and it is supposed to warm up tomorrow or Sunday at the latest. So I guess I will let him stick around.

  Hi Popeye
Mom wants to see that movie, the first one was so good! It sounds like you all need more mom and dad time, though.
Mom has a booboo on her leg that she didn't even know happened. Yesterday when she left the museum, the car door slammed into her shin (because she's clumsy sometimes) and it hurt, but mom didn't think anything of it. Last night when she was getting ready for bed, she saw that she had bled on her khaki pants! There was a huge wound on her leg as well. It doesn't hurt, but it will take awhile to heal.
Today mom worked in the avian nursery, and she had the 20 minute timer as well. Every 20 minutes she had to feed the smallest babies in the incubator, and of course, clean their nests and paper underneath, too, because what's going in one end seems to push out what's at the other end. She managed, between 20 and 45 minute feedings, to clean only 6 other cages. The avian nursery is pretty full right now, with robins, sparrows, starlings, mourning doves, pigeons, a cedar waxwing, a woodpecker, a little screech owl, crows, etc. The 6b ducklings in one of the cages got a fake mom today. Mom found the decoys they use for moms, and popped one in there on the heating pad. The babies will gather round it for comfort once it heats up a little.
After the center, she went shopping for fruits and veggies for us. Now she's home, and after doing our blogs, will plant the strawberry, gooseberry, and peppers that our neighbor left for us. We are under a frost advisory for tonight, so mom will have to look for some sheets for the tender stuff she is planting today. Everything else should be okay.
I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

Morning Topper Copper, from your Jen Lynn
I love the cookout idea with family and friends, dad has been invited to several different friends homes, but he told them all he has already made plans to spend the day with the things he loves most, namely us birds! I don't think he will be visiting our family grave sites this year, but not for lack of want to, rather for a lack of strength! TGIF dear friends, let's all make this weekend count, let's fill it with happiness and love, and spread it around, our world needs more of both! Give our love to all in your happy home, CYA tomorrow...

Much love on Friday, Jenny & my Dallas flock

  Hello Popeye~
I hope you had a great day. Mine was pretty good. Mom was busy with chores and spent some time looking for recipes for veggies. She found some really great ones so it as time well spent.
The pool is still empty. The lights from the bottom are sitting along side it. They plastered it so I think now they have to smooth it out again and then paint it blue again. It was warm here today so I think everyone is anxious for that pool to be open!
I hope the parronts had a great time today!
I hope your evening is just perfect!
Leaving a vote and a big hug!
