Silver Sneakers is a wellness branch of mom's health insurance, which pays for fitness activities at some gyms. Mom couldn't find one that had a pool when she first wanted it, so she joined Olympic and has been paying a monthly fee. This will be free!
Mom did the squirrel porch this morning, but they only have 3 squirrels out there. They should rename it the possum porch, because there are 6 cages of possums out there! Then she did the main aviary, which has only pigeons right now. After that she did the recovery room. This room is usually the most interesting because a variety of animals is there at any given time. Today there were 4 possums, a goose, a duck, a turtle, and a crazy Cooper's hawk who got out of the cage. That meant mom had to go find heavy gloves and a net. She did get it back to the cage, though.

Mom is working today at the museum, so I have to be brief. Mom's birthday was celebrated with 2 friends last evening. They invited her to dinner. She is planning to go to Vietnam in late Feb. around the 19th, and be home in 2 weeks, around March 4th. She has heard how beautiful the country is, and will also go to Thailand while she's there. It's now or never, she's not getting any younger, and airline tickets don't ever get any cheaper! Anna will stay with us again. We'll let you know more about the trip as time goes on. Something magical happened in the music room, did you know? When Sam and the scruffy bird band were in there, they carried some of the instruments out to practice on the lawn, and when they went back in there, the instruments had been duplicated and replaced! Those recorders are cute, we hope they don't clone themselves too, though. It was great seeing Floop!
Breakfast today is Eggs Benedict and Orange juice, or oranges. Anyone who wants may have a mimosa as well. Thanks for staying over, this castle is huge, isn't it? Today we can go to the masseuses again, then we can explore the Jungle Room. George the Tiger is waiting to take us around in there and introduce all the animals. Those that are interested can have a tour of the plant life as well. Falco knows a lot about that. Meet you in the dining hall! Red squirrels are cute but feisty! Thank you so much for electing me king for a month! Everyone is invited daily to the castle for lunch or dinner (or both), and whoever wants can stay with us all month long. Falco and Willie will be here, of course, and so will Callie and her family, I hope Picabo and his flock, and my BBFF, SamIAm should make plans to stay, but there's room for all! Mom loves those little people, but I do NOT! You may recognize all the dinosaurs today in my gallery! That's right, it's all of us! So the last part of my tour ends right here on BC, where you can see some of the over 9000 species of dinosaurs that evolved from those who survived the Cretaceous extinction event and are alive today. All of us modern dinos have feathers and most of us can fly. We are all over the earth, in every habitat, so we have been one of the most successful species of animals anywhere! We are all descended from the meat eating dromeosaur maniraptor line.
If you are interested in the current thinking about the extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous, think beyond the asteroid hitting near the Yucatan. Scientists now think that was a part of it, but that there were other factors as well, including volcanoes in Siberia and the Deccan plain in India all erupting around the same time. Remember that extinctions do not happen overnight, this event may have taken years. Some scientists think diseases among the dinos may have been a factor, too. They had, in fact, been dying off for thousands of years prior to the extinction event.
If you are interested in reading about dinos, mom would recommend any book by Tom Holtz, Paul Sereno, Scott Sampson, Jack Horner, or Robert Bakker. All of these guys are interesting writers. Holtz has written a book for 12 year olds that mom loves! It has wonderful illustrations in it and lots of information as well. You may know Scott Sampson if you have little ones who watch Dino Train on PBS. He writes books for adults, too. All the info this month came from mom's head, but she's been reading about dinos for about 45 years off and on, and did the training in the new hall recently.

We're almost at the end of the month, and there is a great guy to see today. He may seem a bit anitclimactic after our T Rex, though. First, let's take care of the first pic in my gallery. This is T Rex's foot, see how much like a bird foot it looks? I meant to do that yesterday, but mom was absent minded and didn't download it for me. The second pic is a North American oviraptorosaur, as yet unnamed (someone is hoping for corporate sponsorship), but our assistant curator, Matt LaManna, calls it the chicken from hell. His skeleton has a few real bones, but is mostly a sculpture. He has no wishbone, also no teeth, so we don't know what he ate. Maybe plants, maybe fish, shellfish, or meat, there's just no way of knowing without teeth. There's also a cool crest on his head, kind of like a hornbill's or cassowary's. On the wall behind him is a painting of what scientists think he looked like and around him the preparators have placed some shells, turtle fossils, mammal fossils, and lots of plants, so we can speculate on what he may have eaten. With all those feathers it's a pretty sure bet he was warm blooded, like the guys that are related to us: T Rex, velociraptor, deinonychus, etc., even though it's likely he wasn't related to birds at all!
Tomorrow we will end the month with some speculation and a list of paleontologists who have done the most recent research and writing about dinosaurs so that those of you who are interested can read further. Wow, it's already near the end of the month and we haven't even seen T Rex yet. I think mom is saving him/them for tomorrow or the next day. Anyway, today's dino is a juvenile pachycephalosaurus (pack ee sef o lo SAUR us), or thick headed dinosaur. Look at all those horns and bumps on its head. If you can bring the pic up a little larger, you can see it painted on the wall behind, and get an idea what it looked like with skin on. He looks scary, but is just another plant eater. He's in the same room with T Rex, and looks like he's fleeing the scene here. In real life, he would have been getting out of the way as well. Don't know if you've noticed the flowers in the Cretaceous room but check yesterday's and today's pics for flowering plants, or angiosperms. Today over 90% of the plants in the world are angiosperms, and they evolved during the cretaceous. Before they evolved, there were ferns, mosses, cycads, benetittalions, gingko, and evergreens. Most of these take years to reproduce, and even ferns have a 3 year reproductive cycle. Now think about your tomatoes or peppers that you planted last summer: they went from seed to seed (a reproductive cycle) in a few months! That's why they are so successful, they can out reproduce any of the other plants on earth, so they get all the bare spaces! Today there is only one pic, but it's a very neat one. The upper skull is that of velociraptor, and the lower one is archeopteryx. Can you see how they look nearly identical? As we already know, archeopteryx was a bird like dino who lived in the Jurassic, about 150mya. He looked out the side of his head, like modern birds do, and had a pretty large brain case, compared to his size. He probably flew, but was not a strong flier. Velociraptor was a feathered dino from about 67mya, waaaay after our little bird friend. He was feathered, warm blooded, about 3 feet tall, hunted in groups, and was a brainiac of his time, too. His brain case is larger than other animals, comparatively speaking. He looked forward, like we do. He had binocular vision, meaning he had depth perception. For those who saw Jurassic Park, these guys were NOT 6 feet tall and scaly. They were smart, though. Jurassic Park took a lot of poetic license with velociraptors, but right after the film was released, they DID find a very large raptor in Utah, named Utahraptor, who is about 6 feet tall, brainy, and very scary. The raptor family also had another distinguishing characteristic: they had a raised toe which slashed living victims so they could start to feed immediately on them. Greyt to see you!!! Here's today's blog> Today is our last day on Apatosaurus Island in DITT. The second pic shows the allosaurus in all his glory. He was the biggest meat eating dino in the Jurassic. Can you see the tail of the apatosaur above him? Do you think he hunted them? Here's a hint: an animal usually kills what it can eat in a few days at most. That's the apatosaur's tail! We think that unless the allosaur hunted in packs, the adult apatosaur and the other titanosaurs were safe from attack. That's a pretty neat defense, getting so big that nothing will attack you. Are there plant eaters today who do the same? Sure, elephants, rhinos, hippos to name some. Of course in any extinction event it's the titans, the megafauna, who die first, because they can't adjust to changing conditions or food sources fast enough to survive. Okay, the first pic in my gallery is a close up of the allosaurus's chest. Do you see a v shaped bone? You have one of those, and so do I, it's a wishbone! The scientific name is furcula, and 2 legged meat eaters all had those. We are narrowing down our ancestors, did you notice?
Oh, one last word about the sauropods on 4 legs: remember that all dinos started out bipedal?
