BC Homeland Security NeighBIRDhood Watch Volunteer I was orginally adopted and hand fed by a very nice human but they brought home a baby human and couldn't take care of me anymore. I was taken to a nice bird store in Bellflower California. I was very lonely until my mom and dad took me home to be part of the La Habra flock, forever.. |

Hi Ms Alex That's pretty cool that your dad is an UP. Are you on a team? I know that Popeye is on the famous CJC team. Well, we only get a few nice days and then ...boom ... nasty weather. At least it isn't snow. Today was the Preakness Stakes. The winner was OXBOW. The KY Derby winner, ORB came in 4th. So, no Triple Crown again this year. We had a rainy chilly day again. Sunday is suppose to be 80 and sunny. I hope so! Then two days of severe t-storms, then just rain and back down to 62 degrees. HEY! Where is our good weather? I’m still waiting! Hugs Chyna PS Mom did see that movie some time ago when it first came out. She thought it was good. The dance they did to get the 5 score was funny!Come visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Well, it wasn't a good day today. It was cloudy and chilly. I couldn't go outside. I hope we get an outside day before the bad storm on Monday. It's coming across and will hit us Monday with severe weather maybe tornadoes. I saw the weather channel show the whole states of IL, WI, MI ... now's the time I hope they are wrong! Hi Ms Alex Well, we had a beautiful sunny and warm day. I was able to get outside in my stroller. I have a couple pics on my page. Mom & I sat on the patio feeding birds and chips. I talked to them but they just looked at me. Mom is hitting the mall on Thursday! I guess I won't get any patio time. It takes 1 1/2 hours to get to the mall. Hi Ms Alex That sounds like a fun day to me. Was that a special trip for mom's day? I hope your mom had a great day today. Hope everyone had a lovely Sunday. I gave my mom extra kisses today. We had another morning of snow and high winds with a temp of 34 degrees. I guess those 4 days was our spring/summer and we are back to winter (hope not)! “Usually if I have a blizzard in May it’s from Dairy Queen” (Maxine.com). Hi Ms Alex I hope your parronts had a fun day today. How was the ride over there? I don't like rough crossings. Yes, we heard about Hollywood closing, sad! The story was in Blood Horse. You can always go to the Milonga Page to see who won everything. What a surprise we had today! Not only is it cold (low 30’s) but we had snow all afternoon. Thank goodness it didn’t stay on the ground. But, my parronts had to bring in the 3 outside plants they just bought. Our star magnolia is pretty much gone now, thanks to the weather. Have a warm and cozy night. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

The next couple of days will be in the 40’s and the low 30’s at night. We’re getting lots of rain, thank goodness it’s NOT snow! Today, I was very chatty. I guess I had a lot to say …LOL! Hi Ms Alex I'm back ... nope I don't like grooming either. But, I did love all the attention I got from my aunt & uncle this weekend. Here it is Sunday night and we are all so tired. It was a big weekend for us. Some of our company came on Friday for the Kentucky Oaks. Then the rest joined us on Saturday for the Kentucky Derby party. We enjoyed being with our friends and everyone had a great time. A couple of mom’s horses did pretty good. For the KY Oaks, one of her horses came in second (Beholder) and for the KY Derby, one came in third (Revolutionary). Better luck next year! Our weather for Friday, Saturday and Sunday was beautiful. I hope it stays that way. Don’t forget the Milonga Derby is on May 11th (Bailey’s hatchday). Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Oh yes, one of the biggest and popular California wins was ZENYATTA! She won by a landslide! Oh, I have added a bit on tomorrow's last day. I think you will like it. You will have to write it on your paper. DAY 29 Famous Fillies of our time: Rachel Alexandra won the Kentucky Oaks by 10 and 1/4 lengths in 2009. She came back two weeks later to win the Preakness Stakes beating the best boys of her generation. Three months later, she went on to beat the older males in the Woodward Stakes at Saratoga Race Course NY, a feat no filly had ever achieved in the 56 runnings of that race. She raced only 5 more times, earning two more wins and three second place finishes. Then she retired as a broodmare in 2010. She will be remembered as one of the best fillies of all time. Zenyatta will be remembered as one of the best horses of all times. Her wins included the 2008 Ladies Breeder’s Cup Classic and the 2009 Breeder’s Cup Classic (beating all the boys, a feat unheard of) with winning jockey Mike Smith. The latter race will forever be remembered by all who witnessed it. She always dropped far back in the early stages of a race and then made a late charge, passing all of her rivals through the stretch. With enormous strides and being a powerful great athlete, she turned the impossible into reality. She filled the crowds with awe and reverence. Her only defeat came on her 20th race. The 2010 Breeder’s Cup Classic (again with the boys), she waited just a minute too long to make her move and lost by a nose. She has retired and now is a mom. Zenyatta will always be remembered as a crowd pleaser. She always did a dance and kept an eye on her fans before the races. She loved her fans. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex I'm so glad that you are enjoying the derby blogs. We had another nice day today. Dad even got out for afternoon golf. He is happy. I stuck my beak out for a little to enjoy the weather. I like hearing those little birds chirp too. DAY 28 Introduction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of fame of clearly the highest level of achievement and recognition in Thoroughbred racing but it is an honor, not an award. In Thoroughbred horse racing there is only one award that really matters: the Eclipse Award. This award is racing’s equivalent to the Academy Award (Oscar). As with other prestigious awards, there are many categories for the Eclipse: owners, breeder, trainer, jockey, apprentice jockey, and Horse of the Year etc. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Glad the printout arrived. Hope you still enjoy them. We finally have SPRING! It was sunny and warm and I sat by the screen door looking at the sun. I liked it! DAY 27 PLEASE NOTE: Horses are racing at 40 MPH. The most important prep races, in both readying a horse for the Kentucky Derby and in determining who the favorites will be, take place three to six week in advance. There are 26 of these races. Three of the most popular are: Florida Derby, Gulfstream Park, Hallandale FL Santa Anita Derby, Santa Anita, Arcadia CA Wood Memorial Stakes, Aqueduct, Jamaica NY The Blood Horse magazine is a good reading choice for information to determine your winning pick. This years (2013) winners are: Verrazano (Wood Memorial), Goldencents (Santa Anita), and Orb (Florida Derby). Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Oh I have a whole list of racing terms. But, If I put everything on the BC, we would be here forever. DAY 26 To qualify for the Kentucky Derby, you’ll have to win an invitation by performing well on smaller horseracing circuits, and compete on a horse that meets the race’s strict standards. 1) Have all ownership and genealogy papers relating to your horse ready for authentication. The horse MUST be a thoroughbred. 2) Your horse will have to work his/her way up by winning races on the graded circuit. They will have win or place in the graded races throughout the year. 3) You will also have to compete in the racing circuit in your home state, or the state where your thoroughbred was born and raised. 4) Place well at graded stakes races, winning or finishing in the top three as frequently as possible. The goal is to accumulate prize money winnings and points. They have now started using a point system as well. The higher the finish and the more prestigious the race the more points given. 5) Participate in large-purse horse races as you become more confident in your thoroughbred’s abilities to win races. Part of what allows you to qualify is the amount of winnings your horse has racked up over the previous year. 6) Apply to participate in the Kentucky Derby. If your horse has been burning up the race circuits, they may just invite you. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Here's some more for you. You will probably get the whole thing before I post them ... hehehehe. DAY 25 Racing Terms: Backside - a racetrack’s barn or stable area. Backstretch - The straight part of the track on the far side between turns. Card - the day’s races. Dark Day - a day when the track does not race. Furlong - one-eighth of a mile, 220 yards, or 660 feet. Gate - a metal set of stalls into which the horses are loaded and confined until the doors are opened simultaneously at the start of each race. Hands - A horse’s height is measured in hands. One hand is 4 inches. Thoroughbreds are typically 15 to17 hands from the ground to the withers. Hot Walker - person who walks a horse after a race or workout to cool him down. It is usually 30 to 60 minutes. Live Mount - A horse that has a very good chance to win. Maiden - A horse that has never won a race (male or female). Paddock - The area where the horses are saddled and paraded around before post time. Post Parade - Horses going from the paddock to the starting gate (post) parading past the grandstands. Thoroughbred - Horses bred for racing that can trace their lineage back to the three original sires: Darley Arabian, Godolphin Arabian, and Byerley Turk. Wire to Wire - When a horse is in front from the gate to the finish line. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex I got on mom's case and the blogs were mailed tonight. She just made it in to the PO 10 minutes before closing. Let me know when they get there. DAY 24 Types of Races: Stakes Race - The highest level of racing. The horses are the most formful. Top level for stakes races is the Graded Stakes Races (grade 1, 2, 3). This is where you will find the very best horses. Grade 1 races include the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, Belmont, and all of the Breeder’s Cup Races. These are the cream of the crop horses. Allowance Race - Between stakes and upper-level claiming. These horses are not as consistent as stakes horses but they’re more consistent than the claimers. Upper-level Claiming Race - These horses are more formful than lower-level claimers. Any horse can be claimed (bought). You need to put in your request before the race. No matter what happens to the horse, you are the owner after the race. Lower-level Claiming Race - The lowest level of racing and the least consistent in performance. The types of wagers are - Win, Place, Show, Across the Board, Exacta, Trifecta, and Superfecta. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex The DVD has a place of honor with our derby DVD's. Mom says that soon we can rest. I think she means after the Milonga Derby. I'm ready to kick my feet up. DAY 23 The grueling schedule of the three races in 5 weeks at longer distances than most have run previously, is the most difficult task a horse will face in his racing career. There have been 11 Triple Crown winners. Thirty horses have won the first two legs of the triple Crown, but 19 of them failed to win Belmont. Sir Barton was the first winner in 1919. The other winners are Gallant Fox (1930), Omaha (1935), War Admiral (1937). Whirlaway (1941), Count Fleet (1943), Assault (1946), Citation (1948), Secretariat (1973), Seattle Slew (1977), and Affirmed (1978). Sadly, the last triple crown winner, Seattle Slew passed away on May 7, 2002. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Well. we sure did enjoy that DVD. It will get played many times. The only part we didn't like was .... we want more! You know that the Breeder's Cup will be at Santa Anita this fall! Thanks for the congrats. There is plenty of food at the party (197082). DAY 22 Only three fillies ever won the Kentucky Derby. Regret is the first filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 1915. She raced 11 times, and won 9 of those races and finished second in one. She was never beaten by another female horse. She was full of heart and gave the boys a run for their money. Genuine Risk was the second filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 1980. Genuine Risk also raced in the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes, placing 2nd in both of them. She was mated to Secretariat. Unfortunately, the colt was stillborn. Winning Colors was the third filly to win the Kentucky Derby in 1988. As was her habit, Winning Colors broke fast and raced to the lead. In the Preakness Stakes, she finished third and in Belmont Stakes, she finished out of the money. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex You're dad is so funny ... beer for boobs! LOL!!! I got to watch the DVD with mom today. We LOVED it! Many thanks! We will watch it over and over. That interview guy was strange. he didn't know anything or who he was looking at. Mom spotted Bob Baffert right away and that guy walked right pass him! We are so jealous that we can't go there for breakfast. Mom would be in heaven. Take lots of pics when you go. Try to get Mike Smith's pic! DAY 21 The twin spires are easily recognized by any racing fan and are symbolic of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. They are such a famous landmark that they were even used to create the logo for Churchill Downs Inc. The spires were designed by a 24 year old draftsman, Joseph Dominic Baldez, who was asked to draw plans for Churchill Downs’ new grandstand and were built in 1895. Originally the plans did not include the Spires, but as Baldez continued work on his design, he felt the structure needed something to give it a striking appearance. Hi Ms Alex There is more ... they donate from drinks and attendance. My mom is a two time survivor so, it means a lot to her. Got the DVD today, mom is going to watch it in the morning, thanks. Do you need it back? DAY 20 Horses and Hope is a project of Kentucky’s First lady Jane Besheat, the Kentucky Cancer Program, and the Pink Stable, a committee of the Kentucky horse owners, trainers, stable owners, jockeys, and others. The mission is to increase breast cancer awareness, education, screening, and treatment referral among Kentucky’s horse industry workers and their families. Featured at Kentucky Oaks are Oaks Lily drinks in souvenir glasses. $1 from the sale of every Oaks Lily benefits Horses and Hope. Churchill Downs also donates $1 to Susan G Komen for the Cure for every person in attendance. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex I can't wait to see the DVD. Mom says she saw a tiny bit during the Jockey series on TV a few years ago. DAY 19 The Kentucky Oaks is a “PINK OUT“ race day. They encourage all attendees to incorporate pink in their attire for the day to show their support. They also have a moving Cancer Survivors Parade on the track and a special winners circle formed by cancer survivors. This is the only time they allow people on the track. Additionally, Churchill Downs’ facility will be adorned in pink, including pink colored bunting, flower beds, flags, and jockeys’ and pony riders’ apparel. Even bugler, Steve Buttleman will sport a pink uniform as he calls the horses to the post throughout the Oaks race card. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Talk to you tomorrow... DAY 18 Derby Bits ~~~~~~~~~ In 1905 only three horses ran in the Kentucky Derby, the smallest field in the race’s history. Agile was the winner. The fastest Derby time was set in 1973 by the famed Triple crown winner Secretariat. His time was 1:59 2/5seconds for the 1 and 1/4 miles. The first gray horse to win the Derby was Determine, in 1954. The first live radio broadcast of the Kentucky Derby was in 1925. In 1952 the Kentucky derby was covered on national television for the first time. The governor of Kentucky is the only person permitted to present the trophy to the winner. The oldest jockey to win was Bill Shoemaker. He was 54 when he rode Ferdinand to victory in 1986. In 2010 Calvin Borel set a new record, being the first jockey to win 3 out of 4 consecutive Kentucky Derbies. Some of the most famous horses in history never ran in the Kentucky Derby, including Man o’ War, Seabiscuit and John Henry. The Kentucky Derby has been postponed only once. That was in 1945 during World War 11. That year it was run in June instead of the traditional May. In 2005, the purse distribution for the Derby was changed, so that the horse that finished 5th would receive a share of the purse. Previously only the first four finishers did so. Hi Ms Alex My parronts are back home and I'm trying to catch up. They had warm temps downstate and no snow. The heavy rains have melted a lot of snow up here and we can see a few spots of ground. Looking forward to the DVD. DAY 17 In 1875 the derby was raced at a mile and a half, the distance it would remain until 1896 when it was changed to it’s present one and a quarter mile. Fifteen horses were entered that day. The winner of the very first Kentucky Derby was Aristides. He was a small, Kentucky bred chestnut colt. Aristides was initially thought of as the rabbit, the early race leader who sets the pace. The pace he set was so fast that by the far turn he was losing the rest of the field, making an exciting finish for the first Derby. He won $18,325. Aristides is honored with a life size statue at Churchill Downs. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex I have seen pics of races at both tracks, but I like Santa Anita better. DAY 16 A wide variety of seating at varying prices is offered for the Kentucky Derby. Millionaire’s Row is the scene of celebrities and high ticket prices. They have their own dining room and many TV’s. On the other end sit’s the infield which is home to 80,000 revelers and rivals only Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras in its traditions and wild atmosphere. They do not have a view of the horses. Ladies, when attending the Derby, be sure to wear a pretty hat. Beautiful hats are a tradition. This is an exciting place to be on Derby and Oaks days. PS ~ I WILL BE OFF LINE ON WEDNESDAY, WILL CATCH UP ON THURSDAY. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex Here's DAY 15 ..... Churchill Downs is still one of the most successful racetracks in America. It’s live racing calendar runs over 60 days per year over two separate meets: late April to early June and late October to late November. The track is available for training approximately 295 days per year. In recent years, they have added lighting for night racing. My parronts were at the Downs for this special event. They also allow many wonderful tours of the building and grounds. If you are lucky, you can watch the morning work outs. Hugs ChynaCome visit me, Chyna & Bailey ♥ RIP.

Hi Ms Alex I have seen some pics of clocker's corner with some famous horse people there. lucky! Got your email, thanks. DAY 14 The first Derby was an occasion for a picnic for many race goers. Nearby residents sold pralines, chicken, and fried fish from wicker baskets in the infield to hungry patrons. The amount of food served today at the Derby is truly astounding. Levy Restaurants serve a total of 7,000 pounds of beef, 1,000 pounds of pork, 63,000 shrimp, and 200,000 hot dogs. The Derby experience would not be complete without munching on at least one of the traditional foods that have become synonymous with the Derby. Such as Mini Hot Browns and Kentucky Burgoo. Hi Ms Alex You just missed the big race day at Santa Anita last Saturday. You would have seen top horses and jockeys. Now, they are on the way to Churchill Downs. DAY 13 Most Derby winners were foaled in March or April. There are a few notable exceptions. There are a few Derby winners who were not actually three years old at the time they ran for the roses. Northern Dancer, the winner of the 1964 Derby was foaled on May 27, 1961 and the race was run on May 2, 1964. No horse since Apollo in 1882 has won the Derby without having raced at age two. Please note that naming your race horse must follow rules too. Naming your horse has 18 rules starting with … you can not have more than 18 letters (spaces and punctuation counts as letters) total in the name. The Jockey Club will approve the application.
