News - I got a new home... well not realy. It's a new big cage like Pepper's but the top is like my old one. I can move around more in it and Mom put extra perches so I won't fall. I love it. Mom moved some other furniture to make room for it beside Pepper's cage, where I was before so it was not too much of a change for me.
The postman asked me to take care of his 2 birds over the long weekend at the beginning of September. When he and his wife came back to pick up the birds Monday evening, he saw how well TiPaul was getting along and decided he would do better with us. He is a great bird, but we are still getting to know each other. ***UPDATE AS OF NOVEMBER 6th *** Just over 2 weeks ago, TiPaul decided to jump off his cage again, but this time he was not so lucky. Having less feathers than the average CAG since he breaks them off, and having virtually no tail, his balance is way off. His chest area opened, where he had fallen in the past while with his second owner, who let him heal naturally. I took him to the vet, where he had to be put under and stitched up properly. He was also put on antibiotics for 2 weeks. Well, within of a few days, I thought I had a new bird in the home. He started talking, his firts words being *hello, I love you*, he started clicking like my other CAGs, and he started playing, shredding a cardboard box, and just being a fantastic bird. He has never bitten my partner nor me, and he plays well with Pepper, my other male CAG. Yesterday was 2 weeks from his surgery and we went back to the vet. He is doing great - he has healed perfectly - the stitches will fall out on their own. It seems he did this once before with the first owner too, but was hospitalized and taken care of. You cannot begin to realize how happy I am that he found us and his permanent home.

Hi! My name is TiPaul - Who was 8000??? Who will be vote 9000?

I am a Congo African Grey from Entrelacs, QC.

nope

13 years old   M

Congo African Grey

We're still working on that one. UPDATE: He is taking food from my hands and loves almonds, peanuts and nutriberries along with fresh fruits and veggies.

On top of his cage, walking the floors and on my shoulder

He is still not settled in completely, as he only came to live with us 2 weeks ago. UPDATE: He is acting like a CAG - loves shredding apart his cardboard boxes

She is patient with me and lets me go about fitting in with the other parrots at my own pace. She also insisted that my old cage be delivered here, because I am used to it. UPDATE: It has been 3 months since I have come to live here, and I am so happy - I know what a real flock is all about.

Feather picking and biting his nails.

If it's cardboard, and it's a box, let me at it..

Hi TiPaul and the Quebec Flock
July 12th BOTM POST
Hi everybirdie Zeena here with an interesting article we encountered while studying on the various Cockatoo species. Real or Hoax? We look for your thoughts on this. I know Spot Le' Blaze-atiel will be happy, it gives hope to him with his fiancee Miss Puffin.
HYBRID parrots are nothing new, with various matings occurring over the years, some deliberate, some accidental.

But the latest hybrid that I’ve come across is really incredible, with the environment and the circumstances under which it was bred truly amazing.
Nikki, who lives in New South Wales, has bred a galah-cockatiel cross, which as far as I can ascertain is a world first. She had a 12-year-old male galah in an aviary with five female cockatiels and six male cockatiels. Three pairs of cockatiels were breeding happily and Nikki got the shock of her life when she walked past the cage one day and saw a decidedly different-looking bird sitting on a perch.
“It was a young bird and obviously a cross between the galah and a light yellow coloured six-year-old cockatiel, with the parent birds definitely bonded and together all the time,” she said.

“The young bird is around 25 per cent larger than a cockatiel, with a galah’s body shape that’s grey all over.

“He has an orange galah-style crest, dusty orange chest, deep orange cheek patches, with wings more like a cockatiel in colour but the shape of a galah’s wings.” Joseph Forshaw, the world renowned parrot expert and author of the classic Australian Parrots book, said he had never heard of a galah crossing with a cockatiel anywhere in the world.

“I have never heard of a cockatiel crossing with anything, although I have heard of people trying to cross them with other parrots,” Mr Forshaw said.

He said "recent DNA tests had indicated that cockatiels are related to Australia’s black cockatoos. I guess the fact that the cockatiel has bred with a member of the cockatoo family proves conclusively that it is a part of that family,”

Avian vet Tim Oldfield was skeptical when told of the mutation, but changed his tune when shown the photo. “I have to admit it looks exactly like a cockatiel galah cross, quite amazing,” he said.

The woman who bred the bird took it inside to hand-feed it, intending to make it a pet.

“He’s very quiet and friendly and I’ve been offered $15,000 for him, but people have told me he’s worth a lot more because he’s the only one in the world,” she said. “Three of the logs were used by the cockatiels and the other box was used by the parents of the hybrid baby,” she said."The logs are impossible for a Galah to fit inside easily. There is no other explanation to his appearance in the aviary.

If this indeed is a true cross, it answers many questions of the relationship of our Cockatoo species to the Cockatiels. Whether the baby is fertile and able to reproduce was not indicated. article from 2006.

Hi Tipster, from Jenny, LaLo, & Mr Limon
Well the much anticipated Mr Limon made his debut in our home last night at 7:11 on 7/11! I want to point out, that due to extreme separation anxiety, dad has agreed to joint custody until things ease off! Limon will be a work in progress for us, but all the good stuff is already in place, right now he is a very frightened 14 year old TooMan that needs attention and love, he'll get a lot of that at our home! He loves bananas, broccoli, and birdie bread, & he has calmed down a lot over night, and is not hissing as much this morning! Our bird club groomer came with Limon's daddy last night, and all of us got our beaks and nails trimmed, but not our wings, very sneaky, but she is so nice! We already have a dozen stories to tell, but that will come later! Have a great day and give my love to all in your sweet home...

Love on this Saturday, from Jenny, Limon, LaLo, & our Dallas family

  8,816 Hi TiPaul
Hello again, it is Zeena with today's BOTM post. Today we head into Bolivia to take a look at the last remaining wild Red-Fronted Macaws. This is a special request from my good friend, the very handsome Mr. Cappy. ( Don't tell him I said that or I won't hear the end of it. LOL). Cappy's beautiful fister Dory is a Red-Fronted Macaw so this will be of interest to her especially.

Red Fronted macaws, Ara rubrogenys, are the smallest of the large macaws. Fairly rare and therefore not well-known, Red Fronted macaws are olive green with bright red on their foreheads, ear coverts, shoulders and socks. Their under-wings are flames of red, orange and yellow. They have teal colored feathers in their wings and tails. One thing to note is that Red Fronted Macaws have a bare patch of skin around the eye but lack the bare cheek patch of the large macaws. Red Fronts are generally around 24 inches in length and weigh between 450 and 550 grams. Their wingspans are generally 32 to 34 inches. Red Fronted macaws are considered to be one of the large macaws. They have a body the size of a medium to large Amazon parrot with a longer pointed tail. Considered by many to be the ideal size of macaw, they are fun loving and make wonderful pets. Red Fronted macaws can become excellent talkers and are quite the comedians. They are not dominant birds.
They are extremely affectionate, intelligent, playful, gentle spirits fids with graceful, moderately sized bodies.
Within their natural range, their numbers have been decimated by and there are now less then 1000 wild individuals, some have counted only 150 total. They are being pushed to extinction by;
.loss of habitat due to conversion of their habitat to agriculture and because of intense grazing;
. harvesting of the nut and fruit trees that provide an important food source.

ingestion of pesticides applied to crops; or deliberately baited food set out for them.
illegal trapping for the pet market.

However, they have been doing quite well in captivity and are reproducing successfully. Even though one can't consider them "common" - domestic-bred birds can usually be found.

Range and habitat

The Red-fronted Macaw is native to a small mountainous area of south-central Bolivia situated about 200 km west of Santa Cruz, in the department of the same name, where the climate is medium altitude semi-desert. The natural vegetation consists mostly of cactus (large and small) and thorny trees and scrub. The climate is semi arid with cold nights and hot days. Rain comes in infrequent heavy storms. It is unusual in that it is the only macaw to inhabit such a climatic zone. Most macaws nest in holes in large trees, however here there are no very large trees in its range so it nests in vertical fissures in cliff faces.

Immediate action is required to stop the Red-Fronted Macaws falling to the same fate as the Spix Macaws

  Hi TiPaul
Mom's appointment with the surgeon stands on the 31st, so the surgery will probably be some time in August.
Falco must have chewed at her leg last night, as it was raw looking this morning. Mom is hoping she'll leave it alone, or she might have to go back to the vet for an e collar. That would be horrid!
Mom interviewed for a job this morning, but the more she thinks about it, the less she wants it. It's at the center and the shelter as an educator, but it would be about 20 hours a week, and she'd rather have the time than the money.
This morning mom was in the outdoor RVS areas again, taking care of ground hogs, skunks, foxes, and coyotes. Maybe Monday they will put her in a room with a fan. Hope you are having a great day and getting lots of sun and scritches. Hugs, Willie

  Hi TiPaul
when mom went outside this afternoon she caught a small bunny sitting in her flower garden. she chased the bunny out of the garden and it ran out onto the road so mom then chased the bunny back into our yard.

Boo Boo was in her outdoor cage and i was in my harness on moms arm. after mom finished reading the paper she picked p sticks in the yard with me still sitting on her arm. then even with the rain we have been getting mom noticed several large shrubs had wilted leaves so mom dragged out the hose to water the shrubs. the hose scared me but there was nothing i could do about it. dad then frantically called to mom and told her to get the birds inside because out neighbor had started spraying his sickening poisons on everything. mom handed me to dad who was afraid to take off my harness and ran and got Boo Boo. we are glad the bunny was safe in our yard also.

Well, I've always thought you looked greyt! But now with all your beautiful feathers you are super greyt!
Keep up the good work growing them. I broke a tail feather almost a week ago ... mom isn't happy with me. I pulled it around to my beak to preen instead of turning my head to my tail ... Yep, I bent it in half!
The news on Ozzi is ... one pleaded not guilty and the other two said nothing. Another court day is set for mid August. Please keep Ozzi's parronts in your thoughts and prayers.
Today, I flew in a small circle and landed on my avian light (didn't break) stand and sent it crashing to the cage with me on it. Then I flew to the floor and mom ran to me. She checked me all over and held me cause I was scared. I lost a couple of feathers on my "ankle" but no cuts. I'm doing fine now, playing and eating normal.
I won't do that again!

Hi TiPaul and the Quebec Flock
July 11th BOTM POST
Hello to all my BC friends. Zeena here today to take a peek into some nestboxes around the world, and take a look at some of the amazing Amazon mutations being bred today. Please note that most are not currently available to the public. Some of these awesome finds are selling for as much as 125,000US each to breeders.
One day these new color mutations will be found in pet homes as newer mutations occur. Their unique beauty and charm is well worth the look. I hope you will enjoy them as much as I have. There are several renowned pioneers in color mutation breeding working in the USA in conjunction with international breeders.r Howard Voren is one such dedicated breeder. He has specialized in mutation breeding in several species with great success. All pictures show "pure" mutations, they are not hybrids. Hybrids are a breeding of two diverse species to produce specimens with characteristics of both species.
To breed mutations which occur spontaneously, breeders work with like marked birds or carriers which genetically have the potential to reproduce the desired new mutation. With continuing breeding the new mutation becomes stabilized, and will improve in size, pigmentation and over-all characteristics. Mutation breeding does not weaken the natural health of the species as they are produced from "normal coloured" birds. Many mutations are sex-linked which will only produce specimens of one sex or the other or must have one parent that is the desired mutation to reproduce mutation offspring. Mutation breeding is a challenging and rewarding field of aviculture built on patience and hard work.
I wish to thank everyone for their daily votes and blogs. I read each one and have learned a lot from your input.
I have added the mutation name to each picture for easier identification.

I'm 8003!
Thanks so much for BOTD! I was a happy boy yesterday. Mom topped off the basil plants and gave me all the flowers to munch! What a treat. I didn't get a new pinata, though. She says that's coming in a few days.
It has been pretty dry here. There have been lots of showers and scattered thundershowers in the Pittsburgh area for the past week, but they seem to be bypassing us. It rained the other day for about 3 minutes, and that's all. Mom is watering all the pots daily, and needs to get the hose out to soak the ground a little.
Tonight mom is working an evening event in Dinosaur hall, which should be fun. She likes doing evening events, and it is only scheduled til 7:30, so she should make it home before dark. We will have her attention and cage cleaning skills when she gets back. It should be a pool day, too.
Falco is still fighting mom on the meds and limping, but each day her leg looks a bit better. Mom's hands are beginning to look shredded, though. Hahaha!
I hope you are having a great day and getting sun and love. Hugs, Willie

  Hi TiPaul
The Ara Project Part # 3

Happy Humpday everybirdie. Zeena here with the conclusion of the Ara Project series. I hope you have enjoyed visiting with these highly endangered Macaws, and learning about what is being done to help save the species in the wild. I wish to thank each one of my friends for your continuing votes and words of encouragement. I love receiving input from my friends, and learning more.

The Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) is found in lowland rainforest and savanna, in Mexico remote portions of humid forest, on the Pacific slope in Honduras, in Costa Rica deciduous and humid forest, Colombia in lowland rainforest and gallery forest and Venezuela in rainforest and savanna. Although the Scarlet Macaw is listed by IUCN as least concern there is evidence of a population decline in the wild. It is listed by CITES as Appendix I. The declines in this species' population are due to habitat loss and fragmentation (expected to lose 20-35% of habitat within its range over 40 years (Soares-Filho et al. 2006, Bird et al. 2011)), the wild bird trade and hunting for feathers and food. Current population estimates are 20,000 – 50,000; total Central American population no more than 4000. Many outside conditions could suddenly drop numbers to the point where they will be unable to rebuild populations.
Reasons for decline in population;

Exploitation for the former wild bird pet trade
Habitat loss and fragmentation due to logging and agriculture
Illegal trapping for in-country trade, food and feathers
Shooting for the sport of it
Ecology

The Scarlet Macaw is found in lowland rainforest and savanna, in Mexico remote portions of humid forest, on the Pacific slope in Honduras, in Costa Rica deciduous and humid forest, Colombia in lowland rainforest and gallery forest and Venezuela in rainforest and savanna. Birds are encountered in pairs, parties of 3-4 or flocks up to 30 individuals as they forage on fruits, fruits and nuts of various palms, and seeds, flowers and nectar.

Tomorrow we are going to stop and take a peek into a few nestboxes to discover what eggciting chicks are inside. Bring your cameras for these awesome new arrivals in aviculture.

wel i got to be outside on the porch today for about 1-1/2 hours. it was a beautiful day around 80 with no humidity and a nice breeze with plenty of sunshine. mom trimmed Coris beak on the porch and i sat there and watch Cori cry like a big baby. then mom gave Cori and bath and took her out in the sun to dry off. a family of blue jays just fledged and the family was making all this noise as the parents and babies kept calling back and forth to each other. then the one blue jay parent spotted Cori and started making calls like a hawk. for a moment mom was worried about me sitting on the porch til she realized it was the blue jays trying to scare us away from the babies.

  Hi TiPaul
You look so handsome in your new pic! Good job on the feathers.
That video was so sad ... my mom was sobbing. They are trying to document everything so they have proof of it all. Now the world knows who one of the boys is thanks to his mom. I read it, I think on one of the Ozzi pages. She said that she has motorcycle people to take care of anyone harassing them. What an idiot! I hope this starts all countries taking a hard look at the juvenile laws. These boys should be tried as adults.

  Hi TiPaul
#7995
Getting real close to the 8K mark!!!!
Well, the parronts made another trip to see a polo match ... no luck again. Mom talked to one of the riders and he said the field was fine. Maybe they will play on Thursday and Friday. They have to get in 3 matches before the other team and referees leave on Sunday. It was 68 degrees today and should be 72 tomorrow. I hope to get some patio time!
As for the court case about Ozzi, even her parronts haven't heard the outcome today. One of the boys mom's was on FB complaining that the boys are being harassed. I hope we can get an updated new law ... Ozzi's Law.
Hugs

  Hi TiPaul
My Mom left early this morning as skin sis came before 9am to bring her to Zumba class and then from there they went over the Bridge to Wareham to the LLBean store there and had to deal with the traffic going up and back, then they went to Hyannis so Mom could pay her RE taxes and they went to pay the NStar bill and went to the dollar store, then they went from Hyannis to Falmouth and then got stuck in a major accident as they were taking Nana home, lots of police cars, fire engines and ambulances, the traffic was really backed up far down the road and no one was moving. An SUV slammed into a car and there were at least two people on the ground in the road on stretchers one on the side of the road by the wooded area.Mom never made it home til nearly 7pm and then she had to get us all cleaned(Dad had given us our snacks and let my frother Kallie out)and get dad something for dinner and put what groceries she had away. Then tomorrow the skin sibs are supposed to come over and help her get all the junk she cleared out from the mud room to the dump and the donation sites! It's going to be another busy day here again and then Friday she's going out again to get what errands she didn't finish today and try and help Nana with some things in her yard and house!
It sure sounds like your sweet Momma is as busy as mine is these days! How I hate it when those storms keep interrupting everything we try to do on the internet!I just pray that you are all safe and the storms don't do any damage to you and your sweet family either! There are way too many of them lately! Its bad enough we had a long stormy snowy winter,we don't need for our summer to be messed up either! Its bad enough that my Mom only lets me do silent voting without even letting me stop to chat with anybirdie, but tonight I win and get to at least say something without having to stomp the vote button and run!LOL! Wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses and vote number 7992 for you!Loving you always and forever,Dixie

Come visit me, Gabbie, Kallie, Peepers & Dixie.

  Hi TiPaul
Thanks for helping me to be BOTD today! I'm so happy to be in the castle for a day.
Mom is trying her best to get an appointment for the cataract removal, but so far, no luck. She's waiting for a phone call which may get her an appointment sooner than the end of the month.
There's not much news here. It's going to be a lazy summer day with mom at the pool and later spending time with us, hopefully outside if it's not too hot.
Falco's still limping, but mom thinks her leg is looking better. Did I tell you she clipped Falco's wings? After leading her on a 15 minute tour of the house the other night because she didn't want to go to bed, mom finally took her into the kitchen, and clipped her.
I hope you are having a good day and getting some sunshine and love. Hugs, Willie

Come visit me, Gizmo, I miss you, sweet boy, Willie, Kaji, TiPaul, and Sky for 10k!, Peppino, In Divo's memory & Falco, Mikey and Chipper for 10k.
