  Hi Gus
We are enjoying another bright sunny morning here with the temperatures of 39 degrees, our highs being 42 and our lows will be 29.Its really windy out there right now also.Mom got us all up early this morning and cleaned our cages and room and then we got our warm bean mix.She will be home for the day so she will be able to catch up on the house chores that seem to keep piling up on her and maybe make a decent dinner for my dad.Mom will be spending the day getting as much done in the house as she can at least start cleaning the whole downstairs.Mom was busy today cleaning the upstairs bathroom, then the downstairs bathroom and then she found something to make for dinner for tonight and got a good idea for what to make for my dad for a change instead of grabbing something fast and quick. Then skin bro came over and stayed awhile and played with Candida,he has another interview to go to tomorrow for Bouse House, and Mom is curious as to what he will be doing there? That's a port-a- potty company here. They are desperate for someone to work for them as they will interview you from 6:15am til 4:00.Its full time all year round and pays $15.00 and hour. Then my dad came by to pick up the taxes to take them to the office in Hyannis to be processed and that took some time out of Mom's day. Other than that nothing exciting is happening here. The VNA came over to give Nana a shower today and yesterday the PT VNA took her outside for a walk with her cane in her driveway and around to the side of her garage and house and she saw some of the crocus's coming up there.Nana is so pushing herself so she can get back to where she was before she fell and they are all working her hard with her PT exercises.Oh that fruit stand really sounds so good,Mom really loves those farmer's Market's and the one in Boston Haymarket Square was really good, you could get some greyt fruits and veggies for a greyt price, but that was the first and last time that Mom went there,it was way too much to haul all that stuff back home on the train with them and to have to walk through all the crowds with the heavy packages!
Other than that there's nothing much else going on here, just another quiet boring day which both me and Mom love as we haven't been this quiet in weeks now!
Wishing you a greyt day and I'm sending you all my love along with warm birdie hugs and soft beakie kisses and a vote for you too!Loving you always and forever,my awesome friend,Love Dixie

  Hi Gus
Well, no fooling, (hee hee, get it?) I got out for my sunbath at 10:45 and it was just perfect. No pedestrians and no trash trucks, just Mom and me. It was a nice balmy 75 degrees, but in the sun it still got a little warm for my mom. She took a break watering the gardenia tree and then stood with her back to the sun and read her kindle. When we came in she noticed her face was a little pink, so tomorrow she will probably sit in the shade.

Meanwhile it is Wednesday, so Mom goes to the gym in the afternoon. Her usual 4-6 will be shorter though, because Becky has a mandatory meeting till 4:30, so they will start her session late. I can't complain! More mommy time for me!

Now I am wondering what Mom and I will have for lunch. She is thinking a pot roast and potato burrito, which is fine by me. Darned lady isn't hungry yet though, even though she can hear her stomach growling. How can her tummy be hungry, when her head isn't? I am pretty much hungry (at least for treats) all the time.

So now I am sitting on my mom's knee in dictation mode for my blogs. She is wearing shorts, so it is a bit slippery, but she is careful to hold very, very still so I don't slide off. I have to admit I do like it here. I am under the desk, so it is like my only little cave.

Don't forget to go check out Mikey D's (247164) old west adventure today and while you are there you can peck his vote button to get his BOTM campaign off the ground.

  Hi Gus
A APRILS FOOLS DAY STORY- BELIEVE IT OR NOT
in trying to encompass my blogs for my campaign i have come up with this-----
the greatest thing you can do to reduce carbon emissions and combat global warming is to stop eating meat and go veggie. if the desire for meat is to overwhelming try roadkill. it is very plentiful and found along all roadways and doesn't cause horrific suffering at slaughterhouses. also remember to save your poop for future heat and fuel resources. also all CEO's of Exxon, Shell, BP,etc, Monsanto & Dupont are aliens from another planet intent on destroying earth as we now know it, by their fracking, constant oil spills, pipelines, non-stop plastic containers, chemicals and complete contamination of our drinking and water supplies.. they are very prolific and their offspring are Keurig K-Cups which live on a floating waste pile of plastic, in the Pacific Ocean, which is twice the size of Texas. if the K-Cups were lined up they would encompass the earth 10Xs. Alex from the LaHabra Flock asked about killer Bees. Killer Bees were introduced into Brazil in the mid 1950's by a scientist trying to breed a bee pollinator that was better suited to tropical places. the killer bees do pollinate but they also tried to kill all the native honeybees. Monsanto and Dupont gleefully said they would help by developing a poison so toxic it not only kills all the bees but the trees and plants as well. since this was hurting the Mexican drug cartels profits they have banned the poison in Mexico. to this day the US government is still spraying in south and central america in the 1980s a few killer bees hitched a ride on a Brazilian oil freighter and landed in Southern California where once again the conquering bees tried to wipe out the native bees. a few bees managed to mate with some of the native queen bees producing offspring that aren't as warrior like as the killers but not sweet like a honey bee but they are still pollinating so leave them alone. the month of April is hug a tree month so if you can't plant a tree go hug one and keep developers from chopping more down for shopping malls
HAPPY HUMPDAY

  Hi Gus
It's always sad to see road kill, no matter what animal it is, but when it's someone you know and feed, it's horrid. We are so sorry.
Yesterday the guy came to measure the kitchen for new cabinets. Mom chose a honey color, because it's a small room and the wood in there is too dark. I kept yelling while he was here, telling mom that a stranger was in the house, and she should watch out. Daisy helped, too, by barking a lot. He made some suggestions about a lazy susan in one corner cabinet, putting one over the fridge, and installing a microwave over the stove, freeing up that space for a closed cabinet instead of a shelf. The guys who are going to do the work will get back to mom after Easter, so she'll be able to see what the cost is. She still wants a new stove, as the one we have is 40 years old and the oven doesn't heat evenly any more. We'll see, though, what the cost is before mom does any shopping.
Our cleaning lady told mom there is a Sears outlet store close by where she can look at floor models and but them at a discount, so it's one more thing to consider.
Today I think mom will finish shopping for the groceries needed to make the wedding soup, the ham, and the Easter Bread. She will wait until Debbie, the cleaning lady, is finished, though.
Guess what mom saw when she went out to feed the new squirrels today? There were catkins on the willow, tiny buds on the forsythia, and 2 brave little crocuses in bloom! It looks like spring is finally getting here!
I hope you are having a great day and getting tons of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

It's Sawyer.
Yesterday was free movie day so mom and dad saw "Paddington". It was a good movie. The animation was great. From there they stopped at Walmart for tomatoes and then went to visit their friend in the rehab place. His new place is a private home and is really nice and the staff is friendly. He'll be there for about three more weeks and then he goes home.
Today will be partly cloudy, with a high of 77 and a low of 52.
Hope your day is fun.

  Hi Gus
Hello everybirdie, Mikey D here to introduce myself to you and our upcoming BOTM campaign. Most of our BC family will remember my beautiful wife-bird Chuey and her BOTM Cattle Drive. After giving my campaign greyt thought I have decided to step back into the history of the United States. It was made easier for me when I recently received a message that the Beakerton Security Company asking for help with a special, secret mission.
It appears that that rascal Black Bart has popped his head back up this time robbing stagecoaches and wagon trains owned by the Beakerton Security Company. Our mission is to take a special load of Parrot Treats from Texas to the sunny state of California by Mule Train. The convoy of wagons will leave Texas and travel through some mighty dangerous, formidable territory. That is where you come in. i need your help in driving these ornery sometimes stubborn long-eared mules, in driving our herd of cattle and replacement horses and mules, and most of all guarding our precious cargo of Nutri-berries and other treats safely to those hungry beaks in California.
Most of you have your saddle horse already, so you'll "ole need be catchin' it up, and pack your saddle bags fer our "Wild West Adventure." Might I add you'd best be polishin' yer guns too, with Black Bart and his band of dirty low-down scoundrels on the lamb you just might be needing it pretty soon.
Now for a wee bit of history on the Wagon Trains of the USA.
By 1836 when Texas gained its independence San Antonio's population had fallen from a peak of around six thousand in 1800 to under one thousand. When Texas became a state in 1845, two very important factors revitalized the city and the surrounding area. The US Army arrived and soon established a series of ten forts to the west of the city, and the second influence was the US Postal Service who began the slow process of building roads across the state into adjoining states.
Mules had advantages over both oxen and horses. Bred from a female horse and a male donkey, the animals were about half way in size between the two. They were strong and sure footed. They lacked the free spirited nature of horses and were, indeed, creatures of habit. A good CAPORAL, the name given to the person in any wagon train in charge of the animals, had only to crack his whip in the morning for the mules to line up not only in front of its assigned wagon but even its assigned place within the team, which could consist of between six and eight animals. Unlike oxen, they did not rely entirely on foraging for the food but had to be fed from foldaway troughs at regular intervals. Their skin could withstand a lot of chafing from pulling heavy loads but was not water proof. They did have one huge disadvantage over oxen. The Oxen interested thieves not at all while mules were highly prized plunder.
See ya tomorrow

Wow did it ever pour down rain and hail last night. Some roads are closed because of flooding and moms trip out to the car this morning was very squishy. We need the rain but it could have come a little slower lol.

We have at least 4-8 bunny's living around the house. Mom loves to watch them. Mom probably wont appreciate them very much if she buts a garden in this year ... she hasn't decided if she wants to mess with it ... maybe do the potted garden for lazy mom lol.

Have a great day. V4U. Hugs.

  Happy Humpday buddy
a poem by Dorothy D. Warner :

I saw a cowslip through the fence
A horsefly in the store,
I saw a boardwalk up the street
A stone step by the door
I saw a mill race up the road
A daybreak through the gloom
I saw a nightfall on my lawn
A clock run in the room
I saw a peanut stand up high
A sardine box in town
A bedspring at the garden gate
An inkstand on the ground
You don't believe all this, do you ?
For not a single thing is true
It's just a silly way to say
"Happy April Fool's Day !"

  Hi Gus
This morning was a bright sunny morning and the highs for the day would be 50 and the lows will be 32.Right now its 41.Skin bro came for Mom around 7:30 this morning and she woke us up and cleaned our cages and quickly swept our room and fed us our warm bean mix and then packed me,( Dixie) up and they took off to Nana's house. When they got there she put me,(Dixie)into the cage he has there and then Nana got some waffles and an orange for breakfast for the four of them as skin sis met us there, and they had some tea. Then Mom and Nana began to make the Easter bread for Sunday and after they got the dough mixed up,Nana had skin sis put it out in her solar room as it was very warm out there for the dough to rise. Then Mom,skin sis, skin bro all took off to do some shopping for Nana at Market Basket.Nana was waiting for her PT VNA to come.Market Basket was crowded as usual when they got there but they quickly got most of all the items that Nana had wanted and Mom even picked up a rum cake for Easter dessert.Mom picked up ten boxes of margarine for baking which were on sale for 0.88 cents,a nice large garden tomato,Gatorade for dad for the summer for 0.25 cents among some other items which were on sale. Then they went back to Nana's and the dough had risen really well and Nana had shaped the Easter Bread into braids and Mom put it in the oven for her. Then they had lunch of salad with the fresh tomato that Mom bought, salsa and some chips and were getting ready to sit down to eat when another OT came in.She did her thing with Nana making sure that Nana didn't need her for a longer period of time. She will come into next week sometime but after that she finds no reason to be coming as Nana is really doing well. By the time they got done with lunch it was close to 4:00pm and they planned on making the ravioli's on Friday.Mom then got the vacuum after cleaning up the kitchen and then vacuumed the whole downstairs for Nana. Our cousin Bella hated that vacuum and growled and screamed the whole time Mom was in the Bird Room.By the time Mom was done vacuuming it was five and time to go home to make dinner for my dad and to get us all cleaned and fed for the night.Skin bro took Mom home and skin sis left to go to her place.Mom made dinner for my dad, cleaned our cages and fed us a small dinner(Dad had given us our snacks) and now Mom is done doing the dishes and we are having our turn to visit all our friends!
Oh that poor bunny that someone hit and killed.I don't think my Mom could've been able to see that,it was so sweet of your awesome daddy to move him off the road and bury him!

  Hi Gus
Well, Mom got me outside for my sunbath today at 9:45, and even though the weather geeks are claiming it is a high of only 75 today we were quite comfy out there. Mom thinks it is a lot closer to 80 for a high.

Then Mom ran off to the gym for zumba. She always wears pink on Tuesday, because her trainer, Becky, hates pink and Mom doesn't work out with her on Tuesdays. However she then made a point of finding Becky and making her look at her pink shirt and socks. Mom is verrry mean! She stopped at the store on the way home to drop off a script and pick up some more frozen lunches. She got a Butternut Squash ravioli for our lunch today which they have been out of for a while, which made me mad because it is one of my favorites. All sorts of goodies for a birdie to love in there.

And now we are blogging. I was sitting quietly on Mom's knee, but now I am on the desk chewing on the ball of string sitting there. Since it is for making birdie toys, Mom decided that is acceptable behavior. Yippee!

Don't forget today is the last day to vote for our dear little BooBoo for BOTM, although between you and me I am sure she has won. What a wonderful and educational campaign she has run. Next up is Mikey D, and his campaign looks pretty eggciting. April will be another greyt month here on the BC.

  Hi Gus
Just a brief mention of the cart contents: the animal pelts that mom displayed were hunted probably 100 years ago, when guys went and trophy hunted. A lot of the collection is from a guy named Childs Frick, a friend of Carnegie's and son of Henry Frick, whom you might remember from Peppino's blogs. If the pelts are newer, they were donated by the zoo after the animal passed away.
Mom added stuff to the squirrel mix she brought home yesterday, some kibble and more nuts, so she has a lot of food now for the released squirrels.
Today a guy is coming over to measure the cabinets and show mom what's available. She is anxious to see what he has to offer. Then later, she will go to PetSmart for a few doggie things, like new tie outs and maybe a new leash. She wants to look for a treat pouch that hooks onto her jeans if they have them, too.
After that, she's ours for the rest of the day. I hope you are having a great day and getting lots of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

It's Sawyer.
Yesterday was "work in the yard day" for dad. He edged the front lawns to get them ready for mowing and then he cleaned up the south side of the house Guess he wasn't sore enough so he cleaned up the flower bed along the back fence and then mowed the weeds in the backyard. Now he's real sore. Then he took a shower and grilled steaks for dinner. This morning we can hear him creaking and moaning and groaning. "Hey dad! Look at the date on your driver's license. You're not as young as you used to be. Lighten up!"
today will be partly cloudy with a high of 79 and a low of 55.

  Hi, Gus
Knitting a hat in the round will require smaller circular needles. The length mom uses is 16" and since using worsted weight yarn the size would be #7. The 29" length would be for making something bigger. Do have to ensure stitches aren't twisted but after knitting a row or two it'll be fine. Mom sent the pattern instructions via email.

Glad you are okay with your walnut adventure. Sounds like you must've gotten your beak or claw stuck and know that is always a panic situation. Gosh, would think your mom would at least crack the darn thing open. Walnuts are tough! Seen the squirrels dropping 'em from the tree (neighbors have one) to break the nut open.

  Hi Gus
It has been brought to my attention that there may have been a miscount on one of the categories in the Irish Picture contest, so I would like to declare at this time that Cookie and Chipper tied for first in the Most Irish category.

I must admit I do like Mondays. Not only is it not a gym day for Mom, but Dad is off to work and not competing with my mom time. The only down side is that it is trash day. However Mom got me out for my sunbath at 10:30, and we timed it just right. Not a single truck came by while we were out there, although one did rumble past the house right after we came inside.

Then Mom helped her friend, Judy, edit another paper. Now Judy is getting her Masters in Poli Sci so she can teach at the Community College level. This paper was on the erosion of voter turn out over the past 20 years. Mom and Dad vote in every single election, whether it is a major one or just a local. She asked me to take this moment to remind everybirdy's parronts that voting is not just a right, but also a privilege that should not be shirked. If you don't like the way an election turned out, but you didn't vote...shame on you!

That said, I would like to comment on the lovely lunch Mom and I just shared. (Yes! She remembered to eat!) It was one of her frozen lunches, Basil Chicken and Pasta. Needless to say my favorite part is the pasta, and I have to admit I got more than my share. Mom is very generous with the stuff, because she knows how much I like it.

And now I am sitting on her knee dictating my blogs. It looked dicey for a bit, because she has her kindle charging on the desk, and I really wanted to chew on it. However I settled down, so it looks like I am good for the duration. How about that!

  Hi Gus
this is a continuation of birds intelligence from blog on 3-27. we messed up on the order.
Examples of bird intelligence include…
Carrion crows in Japan that deliberately place nuts in roadways, wait for cars to crush the nuts then retrieve the nut meats, all while coordinating around traffic lights to keep safe.
Woodpecker finches in the Galapagos Islands that trim sticks to the proper length for use as tools to forage for insects.
Green herons and other heron species that use bread fed to ducks or picnic leftovers as bait to attract fish for their hunting.
Blue tits in the 1920s that learned which color of milk caps on delivered milk had the most cream (whole milk) and pierced those caps to drink the cream.
Western scrub-jays that hold funerals for dead birds by making loud noises and avoiding the corpse, behavior that may be warning other birds of fatal threats.
Northern mockingbirds that recognize individuals who may be a threat to their nests and will attack only those individuals rather than attacking all passersby indiscriminately.
Aplomado falcons that hunt cooperatively in pairs and thereby increase their hunting success by a large margin through this teamwork.
Jays that cache hundreds of seeds and nuts in fall and manage to retrieve the majority of them over the course of the winter, exhibiting great recall for their hiding places.
Other well known examples of bird intelligence that could be attributed to instinct but still show at least some higher mental capability include:
Amazing nest architecture with intricate construction
Returning to the same ranges, even the same nests, for many years
Ability to navigate migration safely despite changing landmarks
Play behaviors, including taunting cats or playing with objects for entertainment
Recognizing who refills feeders and interacting with that person
Curiosity when responding to pishing or investigating new stimuli
Showing emotions through courtship, caring for nestlings, etc.
Some Are Smart, Some Are Stupid
Like any animal, not all birds are equally intelligent. Ornithologists generally agree that corvids (jays, ravens, crows, rooks, jackdaws, etc.) and parrots are among the smartest bird species and that social, gregarious birds often exhibit more intelligent behavior than solitary species. Still, every backyard birder has seen that one "stupid" bird at their feeders who just can't figure anything out, while another bird of the same species seems to be an Einstein in comparison. Watching birds and witnessing their intelligent behavior can be a joy for backyard birders, and learning more about bird intelligence in quantifiable ways is sure to keep ornithologists busy for decades to come.

  Hello Gus~
I hope you are having a wonderful day! It's been too long since I got blogs out to every bird and I wish I had something exciting to share but it's been rather dull around here.
Dad is home for the day since he had to go to his doctor. Just the usual 6 month check up because of the cholesterol medicine he takes. You would think the cat would be all over him since he doesn't see him much but Merlin is still following mom everywhere. She is the one who feeds us so I can't blame him for sticking close by! You wouldn't want to miss a snack!
I will be having "turtle tank" cleaning duties once mom gets back from dropping Ian off at work. He wasn't suppose to work today but someone called out again! Ian picks up most of his hours that way!
I have the very important job of watching George and Gracie while mom washes the tank. They go into a little box which mom calls there summer home! I watch to make sure they don't escape! Gracie is always wanting to get out although I have no idea where she thinks she is going to go. It's a turtle thing I guess!
I hope your day is just wonderful! Leaving a vote and a big hug!
love you ~ Sugar ♥

  Hi Gus
You and Suzi looked so cute together! Congrats again on your win.
That was a beautiful service for Angel Mario yesterday. What a great way to celebrate his life. We were there, but silent, as mom was working. On Willie's page are 2 pics of what she was doing yesterday. One of them shows where she was set up, right by the camel driver and lions, and the other shows what she had out on the cart: lion pelt, cheetah pelt, sable horn covering, giraffe ankle bone, an impala skull, a gorilla skull, and a warthog skull. The pelts were new, and got a lot of attention. It was a good afternoon for talking to folks.
Today at the center, mom did the RVS room again, and was supposed to feed the bats. When she got to the treatment room, Jess (staff) had already fed 4 of them, and cleaned their terrarium. She was feeding one of the baby squirrels, and invited mom to feed the other one. Mom gladly did that! She hasn't fed babies for nearly a year, so it was a nice change.
Speaking of squirrels, when mom walked the dogs this morning, there was a squirrel near the bird feeders in front of the house. It ran when it saw mom and the girls, and it ran right into the hide box that mom brought home and got nailed up last week, so it was one of the new kids! Mom was happy to see that. She got more squirrel mix while she was at the center, as things aren't really growing outside yet. So they will have food for at least another week.
I hope you are having a good day and getting lots of cuddles and scritches. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Gus
It's Sawyer.
Mom needed things at Costco so she sent dad over to Costco right when the opened yesterday. She said that it would not be crowded at that time. WRONG! It was packed. Dad managed to make his way through the store and even made his way to the "grazing stations". All in all, it worked out ok.
When dad got home and put stuff away it was time to pay the month's bills. We know that dad loves doing this because of all the neat sounds he makes. Does anybirdy know what a "&%$*@@" is? Anyway, that went on for the longest time.
Finaly, dad was finished and he and mom could relax. Yeah, we'll see about that! "Squawk squawk squawk! We want our snacks!" "Oh, so mom and dad get to eat that Margarita Pizza and we get apples? "NOT FAIR!!"
Today will be clear, with a high of 84 and a low of 54.
Hope your day is fun.
Hugs,
Sawyer.

We said goodbye to our wonderful 15 year old doggie Ms Tiger yesterday. Poor old girl was in pain and just no quality of life left. She needed help just to stand up and then she would fall. This part is never easy on mom and she is going to miss her girl. Mom is so sad and we are going to have to cheer her up. I need my bell swing back hehehehe. Have a great day. V4U. Hugs.

  Hi, Gus
That really was a great pic of you and Suzi. Well deserved first place win but loved all the Irish/St. Paddy's pics.

Mom'll look up the pattern she uses all the time for a basic hat knit in the round. Here's a few tips though. She uses #7 circular needles in the 16" length (will need some double point needles to finish the decrease at the top) and worsted weight yarn. The ribbing will be 1 1/2" to 3" in length depending on whether it will be turned up or not. When doing the stockinette stitch in the round you knit every row so it goes quickly. Won't really need to keep track of rows since will measure when long enough. We'll let you know about how many stitches and how to finish since mom has to find the pattern leaflet. Think she'll tell Raffikki too.

Have a great day, wing hugs and a vote, Pearl and Silver.

  Hi Gus
The Purpose of Play
All play that wild birds may use helps them develop necessary survival skills. Even adult birds may continue to play and refine their abilities, though not necessarily with the same frequency as juvenile birds play.
Manipulation play helps birds get more coordinated to build nests, capture prey or extract food from different sources. This type of play keeps bills and talons in good condition and builds up the necessary muscle strength and dexterity for intricate actions.
Investigation play teaches young birds about the world they inhabit, including edible and inedible foods and what objects are safe to touch. As birds investigate more, they refine their ability to cache objects and develop their senses.
Chasing play strengthens wing muscles and helps young birds develop greater agility in the air, or for terrestrial birds, strengthens their legs and helps them be more agile when running. This also helps carnivorous birds develop sharper hunting skills.
Taunting play sharpens a bird's reflexes and increases their agility. It also helps them learn to anticipate prey reactions or how to avoid predators, and will be useful for mobbing behaviors or defending their territory.
Balancing play strengthens foot and leg muscles and helps birds learn how to use their wings to counterbalance air currents or disruptions. Balancing can also be useful for different types of foraging or courtship displays.
Curiosity play teaches birds more about their world, expanding their knowledge of both threats and benefits and helping them react to the unexpected. Curious birds can be more adaptable and will be more successful when encountering changes in their habitat.
Mimicry behavior teaches young birds how to act like adults of their species and learn essential skills such as proper sounds and songs or how to use their unique bills or other physical attributes to the best effect.
While different play behaviors all have a purpose in helping birds survive, some birds do seem to play just for the sheer joy and fun of the activity. As with many types of bird behaviors, the exact purpose of all play is not yet understood, even by dedicated ornithologists, but birders can still enjoy watching the playful behavior of birds. Every time they see their feathered friends engage in another game, they learn just a bit more about birds even as the playing birds are learning more about their world.
