 We saw an add in the paper selling a macaw and cage and wondered how someone could sell their macaw. We called and went to see him. He was kept in a dark room (because he was loud!) in a cage that wasn't large enough and that had only a chain for a perch. His owners said he was mean but they were getting rid of him because they got a new blue and gold (Oh my gosh!!!) When I looked at his eyes, they looked so sad, not mean. But the only way he knew to act was mean. I knew when I looked into his eyes that he would be coming home with us. And sure enough, he did. He lunged at me every time I came near him and my husband was the only one who could get close enough to feed him. We got him a larger cage, perches and toys, and started him on a pellet diet. After about 3 months, he let me come near enough to feed him. I continued to offer him love, then finally one day he accepted it. That was 6 years ago. He now loves to be cuddled and held and is a wonderful part of our flock/family.. |

Hi Gang
Well the decision has been made. We will not be bringing home a big brother. Mom and Dad decided that this was not the right time to bring another bird into the house. They have too much going on this spring/summer to be able to properly introduce the big fella to a new home. They want to thank each and every one of you for your opinions and advice. Hi Chili
Was wondering if you could give me an opinion on something. After reading your story, you might be the perfect one to ask... My mom (Heather) is looking at rescuing a Military Macaw from a neighbor that is moving to Mexico and can't take the flock with her. We are just 'teils and don't have any experience with big birds. First impressions is that this guy is not too aggressive. Would this be just a horrible situation for new owner and bird? The only problem is that the current owner is running out of time to find a rescue and she's afraid of him going to a store where he will get neglected. Mom's aware of the time consumption (escpecially with a new member) and is willing to take the time, but is scared that she will neglect the bird herself because of her inexperience. Mom moved my brother Cricket, a nanday conure, to her shop to live. It is so nice here now. No more conure screaming. Well, I do have to put up with my brother Alex, BFA, barking like a poodle, but it's not so bad. Mom says Cricket is much happier up at the shop than he was at home. Here's a vote. Hi Chili, and welcome to the birdchannel. I love your story because it makes others aware of how horrible people can be to us birds, but mostly I like it because of the happy ending! I like nuts, too. Pistacios are my favorite because they're fun to open and when mom gives them to me she pours them in a bowl and I sit inside the bowl and toss the shells on the floor.
