I was looking for a bird on petfinder and saw Peter. He had been caught lose on the seventh floor of a dorm at UNC. In the summer. The night before I went to get him from the shelter, Ava was left in the night deposit box. They were already calling to each other so I took them both..

Woah, your picture is A-MA-ZING. It's really cool that you could actually get a picture of your birds flying, because most of us get a big blur. By the way, Ava and Peter, you're so pretty! The color of your feathers are so vibrant and beautiful. :)

  Hello!
My name is Ces Erdman and I am a huge bird dork! At the moment there is not a Bird Club in Wilmington, NC. So, I decided to start one myself! Come to find out, there are a lot of bird lovers in the Wilmington area and no where to express our interests. In the beginning this site will be a way to communicate with other bird lovers, ask questions, find birds to adopt, read interesting articles, share bird links, find bird sites, and of course share pics of our babies! Maybe as interest grows, we will be able to start a real Wimington NC Bird Club. If you have any suggestions please let me know. Please support us by e mailing us at www.wilmingtonncbird@hotmail.com or visit the new myspace page at www.myspace.com/wncbc

Come visit me, Moulin Rouge, Bo & Riki.

I'm sorry I haven't checked in in SO long- and here you've lost your sweet border collie! I'm sorry about that. I guess you haven't had the birds out on the bike lately now that it's so cold out! I've been swamped with school- I'm so sick of school! I'm seriously thinking about calling it quits after this (winter) term and looking for a real job. Actually, I'll be looking for the job while I'm in school because as soon and I stop going to school I have to start paying off my student loans! How've you been? Did you have a good thanksgiving?

Come visit me, Tedi, Sam, Sky *RIP* & Wind.

You've got to get someone to take a picture of your birds on the bike! That's great that Lola trusts you enough to let you put a harness on her! Years ago I tried once with Sam, it ended up being a bad experience for both of us (I pushed him too fast, I know...). Sam couldn't care less about the 'keets, although they are fascinated with the fact that he will come out and climb in me and I don't eat him! Tedi keeps trying to get their attention. How I wish I could find a cagemate for him! Tedi flies around his cage really fast (I don't know how he can keep from banging into the sides- he has excellent control!), then he'll stop on a swing for a rest... What a kook!

I FINALLY found my boys! My local Pet Supplies Plus got in a new shipment of cutie budgies and there was a cobalt dominant pied who was so adorable! He was hopping all over, flirting with all of the girls and singing his heart out- I just had to have him! His name is storm. Windy, however wasn't thrilled and he was used to being with LOTS of other birds- he called and called all day, it just broke my heart... Then I was at Petco and saw a very dark violet opaline male last Wednesday. His name is Fog and Wind is totally enamored of him! She flew up to him right away (pretty much the opposite reaction she had to Storm). Now they're all very happy. Storm is skiddish, but he's getting more tame every time I approach the cage thanks to Windy (who's always happy to see me!).

I'm sure the aloe will help- it might help her plucking, too! My old 'tiel Daisy had small cage anxiety too. Luckily she was very tame so I was able to bring her out of it by taking her everywhere with me in the house and giving her little freedoms (like encouraging her to go to the other end of the couch to get a treat, or to eat her cereal (she LOVED cream of wheat with broccoli!) at the other end of the table. It took about a year, but she became a fearless bird! No new keets yet, but I haven't given up hope! That's totally the way- seems like there are ALWAYS keets in need of rescue, but not now (now there are at least five 'tiels that I've come across needing homes, but my mom would KILL me!). I've checked several local pet stores, but none have jumped out at me. Maybe I'm being too picky...

Poor baby, I bet she has arthritis in her feet- two of my cats have arthritis and I mix liquid glucosamine in their dry food. I really don't know anything about seazures. One of my cats gets little tremors sometimes- when he's just sitting, sometimes his head shakes. He was a feral cat and he's really dumb, I think he has brain damage (maybe he was hit by a car or abused as a kitten...). It sounds like your new quaker is in excellent hands. Sometimes the plucking is such a habit there's no breaking it. I've checked everywhere I can think of and there don't seem to be ANY budgies in need of rescue right now- at least not in Michigan! I really, really want to rescue, but if I don't find any by next weekend I'm hitting the pet stores.

Come visit me, Tedi, Sam, Sky *RIP* & Wind.

Feather plucking can be tough, but sometimes a new environment will stop it. I wouldn't be surprised with the varied diet you give your birds, the big cages and lots of out time, and having Frank as a companion were enough to change her habit. If not, sometimes giving them other things to chew on (like cotton rope or shredders) does the trick. Now that Sky is gone I'm looking for at least two keets (maybe three) to keep Windy company. forst I'll check all the local rescues, then the paper, then the pet stores as a last resort. I hope to get them sometime this week...

Come visit me, Tedi, Sam, Sky *RIP* & Wind.

Well, she took the cats to the vet to have them killed, but I know that vet and let's just say they found a good home (not exactly legal, but highly moral). I don't think she'd have Zoe killed, though- unless there were a medical reason. Anyway... my lovebird used to love her kabobs, too! I used to buy unsulfered mixed fruit at the health food store and just keep one stocked with dried fruit all the time, then sometimes I'd put fresh fruits and veggies on another (sweet corn rounds- the LOVE them!). My cockatiels loved them too, but these guys just ignore them. I tell you, that Tedi is SO picky! I've tried giving him sprouted seed, green seed (I found a whole bunch of wild millet heads up north), not to mention fruits and vegetables in every possible way, and he just ignores them! What I need is an "example bird", one who'll eat anything with gusto. Pye was really good for that- she'd eat anything that didn't try to eat her first!

Come visit me, Tedi, Sam, Sky *RIP* & Wind.

Yeah, I know (re: Zoe). I told my aunt the story and she predicted that I'll be getting Zoe in the next year or two (probably true, because this sees animals as posessions and gets tired of them eventually- she had two cats- sweet persians- put down because she was tired of their shedding!). I bought some dried dragonfruit and hibiscus flowers for the birds at Trader Joe's and mixed it in with their seed. The dragonfruit isn't to my taste- a little nutty, but mostly flavorless, but Sam seems to like it. Tedi's really taken to the dish I put on the bottom of his cage- I'm hoping that he'll eat a wider variety of food now. It's fun to watch him fly from the top to the bottom of his cage- he has to zig-zag because the cage is six feet tall and only three feet wide! I figure bourke's must eat a lot of stuff off of the ground in the wild.

I think a 'tiel might make a very good companion for Ava- nice and sedate. I took Zoe's owner to the fest, too, we had a great time! The only thing was afterward Zoe didn't want to go with her owner, she wanted to go with me (her owner ended up having to carry her into the house!). I think the owner was a little pissed off, because it's obvious that given the choice Zoe would rather be my dog, but it's not like I'm going to start being aloof to Zoe or anything. I didn't get another bird at the fair- there were only four budgies there and one bourke's (a male)- but I overspent on toys. At th back of my mind I was thinking about getting a handfed lovebird, but while a lot of them were pretty, none of them struck me, you know? Oh, there were a LOT of quakers there and I got to see one fall in love with a person (and vice versa- luckily they went home together!), it was very sweet.

I'm glad Ava's better! I'm sure she would love a nice male for company- they're so social! I wonder if they're like chickadees in the wild (naturally tame), because mine will come up the the bars when I'm near and they'll even hop on the food dish when I'm replacing it- they've never been handled either. WHat a big weekend I have coming up- there's the bird fair on Sunday (plus I get to see "my" dog Zoe) and a Pet Fest at my vet's complex on Saturday! I might get to take Zoe to that, too- everyone loves her, and she loves everybody so she'd have a great time!

Come visit me, Tedi, Sam, Sky *RIP* & Wind.

Poor Ava!! She's probably worn out from losing blood- is she better yet? If not feed her lots of iron-rich foods like kale and swiss chard and broccoli. I accidentally cut a blood feather on my cockatiel and she lost two big drops of blood before I could find the pliers and pull it. Two drops doesn't sound like much, but she was worn out for the rest of the day and took it easy the next day too! I guess size-wise, those two drops were equivilant to two quarts to us. Is the new cage smaller than the one they were sharing with the tiel? Sounds like it was territorial fighting...
