 I was on a waiting list to purchase a White-Bellied Caique. I was called in May of 2001 and told that I could come up and pay for my new bird. They had two of them, and I was 2nd in line, so I would get whichever bird was not chosen. After I had arrived, I was told that the other women decided against purchasing a caique because of the cost. So, I had my pick of birds. It was a heart-wrenching decision, but after about 5 or 10 minutes, I picked the OTHER caique. For several weeks, I went up and visited and bonded with "my caique", Phoenix (he was still being hand-fed, too), but I always went over and paid equal amounts of attention to this little guy, the one I "left behind." About three weeks in, everyone else on that waiting list had been called and said they were not interested in a caique at that time. I mentioned this at supper one night with my folks. They nonchalantly said, "So why don't you just buy the other one?" (I suppose it was a rhetorical question)...and the rest is history. Shanghai quickly became part of my family, along with his blood sibling, Phoenix. That is the story of Shanghai and how sometimes being chosen last, ends up being the best thing that ever happened.. |

Caymus here. Just flying around today meeting new friends on the BC. About a year ago I began on my goal to meet every birdie here on the birdchannel.
