MAEBS annual bird fair. I rescue exotic birds and currently have 27 in my flock. When I met Gretta as a chick I fell in love with her, and didn't have so many birds. She is one of the few that we actually bought!.

Hi! My name is Gretta

I am a Congo African Grey from Columbus, OH.

Growling Gretta

14 years old   F

Congo African Grey

Gretta likes bananas a lot, and pecans in the shell. Her preference really is just being with me.

Gretta really enjoys hanging out with Fran, our Umbrella. They sidle up to each other, bend their heads together and whisper back and forth. Generally on top of Frans, Baileys, or her own cage but also on one of their many play-gyms.

Gretta doesn't like the others to get loud. She calls the dogs and large parrots by name and tells them to "Be quiet." "No." "Stop." "No Barking, _________!"

"Mommy loves us!" "Mommy going shopping!" My mommy finds time to talk with me, teach me, play with me. She spends a great deal of time with all of us and I still feel so special even though our flock is quite large. She recently renovated our aviary and has hung brightly colored chains and toys from the ceiling for us to climb on and play with. She is also an artist/musician so I get to help her write music, sing and dance. And because she quilts, we each have our very own blanket for bed-time.

She likes to growl then wrestle with me. We grab each other, until one of us says "I give!" All very gentle and loving and fun..

"Be nice. Soft and gentle. I love you.".

  mommy is jealous
wanna know why, because you got that big flock over there and mommy would love to have more birds too,but its to expensive to buy always them and on the other side it to complicated to adopt one here, nomatter if you have experience with birds or not, they always make a big deal before you maybe would get another bird,so mommy have just me the spoiled one, hehehehe and out two budgies, but she going to get maybe a green cheek conure for daddy, since i'm just a big mommy's boy LOL and i'm really impressed you are so smart and can talk so much, hope i'll talk that much one day too,but i'm just 6 month old so i guess i have a good chance to pick it up here,so have to go for now, here is a vote for a cutie

Hi Alex Marie!(Monkey!) Your Mommy told me you don't like showers. To tell you the truth, my 3 Greys don't like them either. The 2 Timnehs will allow me to mist them begrudgingly, but I try to make it fun for them. I put them on a contained, stylized perch/gym without toys/food bowls and prepare them by letting them know they are taking a "shower!" Making it sound like so much fun!!! A super-fine mist lightly falling from above them seems to be the best method for Micky and Mozart. I can do this until they are completely wet. Growling Gretta, the Congo, is more used to it and I can be more aggressive in our bathing techniques with her. The blow-dryer on a low setting is the reward for allowing me to wash off the dander and dirt from under their wings. It took some getting used to on their part, but they love it now. And then I run a dab of mineral oil on their beaks and massage each of their little feeties. I believe this process, if Monkey will go for it, will encourage her to preen and stay away from feather pulling . . . it has been a long and difficult path getting Gretta to stop plucking hers out. I also had to switch methods from being super nice and patient, to being nice and commanding . . . they just didn't have a choice in the matter, they had to have baths. And I am happy to report that none of them were traumatized by getting clean, either!!! Bird Hugs to All! Liz

Come visit me, Crackers, Gretta, Fran, Bailey & Hannibal.

I love the fact that you quilt and give then each their own blanket. I buy them each their own blanket, usually a baby quilt. Greta has a sweet face.

Come visit me, Fergie, Max, Little Ham & Echo.

Hi you sweet little bird you! Yes, Gretta gets me sometimes also. She recently started calling me in my 15-year-old daughters' voice while I'm in my sewing room upstairs! I'd swear it's my daughter and wonder what she is doing home from school! Silly Birds! Liz

Aww! I worked with an African Grey at the zoo. Super smart. He alway messed with my head immitating someone calling my name outside and someone knocking at the door. I love when they say stuff in context!

  Showering
Hi,
Thank you for visiting me and giving me such good advice rearding showering...we keep on trying but she is a scaredy cat and start jumping all over when she sees the water bottle. Eventually I hope to get her used to the idea of showering.

By the way your "babies" are beautiful.

Come visit me, Alex Marie & Pookie.

I am constantly amazed by how quickly Gretta learns speach! She already has a very large vocabulary and we converse daily. Gretta does not mimic me, but comprehends words and their meanings, forming complete sentences. She really surprised me the other night while I was scrubbing the floors in the aviary, (which is really the 'living room' of our house complete with beautiful hard-wood floors!). I was on my hands and knees with my brush, washcloth, hand-towel, and bucket of hot vinegar-water and had just reached the space beside Grettas' cage. (I must move cages around to make sure I get EVERYWHERE!) I heard her comment "Mommy, that is some NASTY water. Nasty, nasty water." I looked up and she was looking through the bars of her cage down at me and the bucket. Of course I had to affirm her by saying "Your're right Gretta! This IS some nasty water." Honestly, could I ever be more entertained or delighted by anything else other than my beloved birds?! Liz

Ihear Gretta is a buckeye fan, so am I. Now my bird is a buckeye fan of a different sort. She tries to eat them while we are wearing them. We don't let her though.

Come visit me, Alexious.
