My first daddy [my main person at one time] was married once before and I was a daddy's boy. After the divorce SHE kept ME out of spite [kept ME in a dark room all alone for the most part]Daddy re-married and got me back , but his new wife is petrified of >>>>>>>>>>go figure.. ...BIRDS. A long time ago she got bit by a Too. We won't go into details because I KNOW the story , but have been sworn to secrecy and an AG always keeps his promises, as if in " I promise one of these days I WILL bite you" tee-hee. ...fortunately somehow she knew my NOW mommy and they did not even know it yet, but I had picked my NOW mommy already whenever she came to visit.I also am a "special needs" bird with a dammaged wing. I'll never FLY, but other than that it really does not handicap me. I've gotten used to the occasional "thud" off my perch or off my cage and I know how to land...I just never know exactly where I will stop skidding in [picture a jet landing on one wing, skidding in and having to stop before he runs out of runaway space].

Hi! My name is Sam

I am an African Grey from Odenton, MD.

Sammybird,Babyb- ird,Nipper

22 years old   M

African Grey

Millet, millet and more millet. Also love peanuts, dried pineapple and fresh oranges. OOOOOOHHHHHH Orange JUICE is yummy as well

my calcium perch in back of cage [a good hiding spot] my swing and the top of cage where some toys are hanging from ceiling so I can reach them. I do not like to be handled too often , but love for mmommy to sit next to my cage and just talk and play peek-a-boo with me

foreign objects too close to his cage, and/or other commotion that is unfamiliar to him. New toys have to be introduced gradually [but he is getting better-realizin- g that toys are fun]

she always seems to anticipate my needs , she buys me millet and toys and sits with me by my cage just talking. Sometimes she puts on music and I just love to bee-bop dance, and when she claps for me I am so excited. She is my biggest cheerleader and keeps saying "you can do it Sammy" and then I can:)I cheer for her as well when she is housecleaning. I tell her "good job"!!!!! and that makes her smile and she never complains about the seeds that I drop all over the place....oh well , let's get real now NEVER is exagerating a bit. She mumbles under her breath...

hanging upside down from top bars of the cage and sliding down the pole of swing like a pole dancer. Insisting to go nite-nite between 4 and 5 pm....it seems to be right along the time that the outside birds stop feeding for the day and head for the nearby trees....will not give up saying "nite nite bird, over and over until covered up. Of course does not to sleep yet...keeps on chattering away [guess he just wants his privacy].

Hi Sam & Earl Rusty Is So Excited It's Christmas
I've got my stocking hung by the cage, we don't have a chimney, so I have to improvise. I'm watching it like a hawk, so far I don't see it bulging with toys or treats, Mom assured me she has forgiven my little escape stunt, but now I'm wondering if Santa Bird was watching during my flight for freedom. I won't ever do that again, Mom made sure of that. Come spring I'm hoping for an outside Aviary right off the patio so Romey and I can be outside all the time. That's my Christmas wish, and Mom's too, she's already put a bug in her son's ear letting him know he's gonna have to be in charge of that little project. I'm also wishing all my friends that I love so dearly a wonderful happy delightful Christmas. Give your sweet Mommy a big hug and kiss from this little Grey guy in Tennessee. OH OH OH Merry Christmas..teehee..Rusty

Hi, Sam! It's Layla, from Alaska!
I know all about that one-wing stuff. My CAG pal, Mojo got his wing injured when we were shipped up here. The nice lady vet in Homer fixed it, but it has been two years and Mojo still bangs into walls. Sometimes he does pretty well, but when he gets really upset he flies straight into the wall. Sometimes I think he does it on purpose, because Mom and Dad come running, and pick him up and coo "Poor Baby!" and give him treats. I think they're on to him, but since we all get spoiled, it's okay. As long as they know just WHO the "beautiful one" is!

Mom taught me a new trick and it's lots of fun. Since I like sounds and whistles best, she taught me to "Call a Cab!" and I let out with a loud "whee-ooo-WHEEET!" just like I'm hailing a cab in New York. My other favorite is called "Cat Herding" and I chase our 3 kitties around the house yelling "Shoo! Shoo! Shoo!" Sometimes they don't even look up, but it's fun anyway.

So yous guys are busy huh? Yeah, same here too. It's ok. Mommies get busy and sometimes don't have the time to blog for us. I'd try to type myself but by the time I walked from the H to the E to the L, L, O....it would look more like hgrerghjkllpo with my toes pushin' all the keys I'm walking on! hehehe

So far I'm ok with Blanche. Mom decided to keep my cage in "the birdroom" and put Blanche in the living room until our quarantine period is up and I've gotten use to her. But nothing has changed for me. I still ride around on mom, helping her tidy up and fold laundry and such, I get shower time with her in the morning and patio time when she gets home after work. Sometimes she talks to Blanche as we walk by but that's it. (I've heard rumors from the cat that mommy holds Blanche too but he's a cat...I don't really trust what he says.)

And dad says Blanche is the normal one and I'm just hyper but that does't sound right. I'm as right as rain! Dad also says I can teach Blanche how to loosen up and dance a bit, and that she can teach me how to "zip it." Dad's been rather opinionated lately, don't ya think???

So, just as long as this new girl doesn't try to take my place (or Peachy's for that matter), I won't have to kick any birdie butt. We all know who's top bird around here! (ok mom, yeah, yeah....I know..it's you) Ok, we all know who FIRST bird is around here. :-)

Give the flock a hug from me...especially your mama!

  Hi Sam!
Caymus here to tell you of our lates news. We are really close to adopting another birdie. Mom's been thinking about it for over a year now, but then we put all our attention into Peachy and hadn't thought about the idea for awhile. But last week mom heard about a parrot for Florida Parrot Rescue, and although initially dismissed the thought, something kept mama thinking about her. So mom filled out an application and we got a visit from her this weekend. Mom and dad really like her, and she wasn't aggresive with me and me, well I'm not scared of nothin'. We haven't made a final decision, but it's looking like I might have a new flockmate by this weekend. Now I'm not telling anybirdy what kind of bird she is...I'm playing a game to see if they can guess. hehehe My clue today is: her name is Blanche, and we assume she was given the name because her and this famous Golden Girl share the same trait. Big hugs and a vote from your pal Caymus.

  Oh Sam...
I know you are sad about Peachy but you make sure to remember the times she made you smile. That's how the ones we've lost stay with us forever. :-) Not to mention that because you knew my fister, that each of our flocks became friends. That is an incredible gift for one little canary to give. Tell Max and the rest of the flock hello and that mom sends head scritches. Your friend, Caymus.

  Caymus here...
Hi Sam. I come with some very sad news. Our dear Miss Peachy passed over the Rainbow Bridge on June 17th. I know Peachy always held a speacial place in her heart for you, her knight in shining armor. She got sick over the winter, mom thinks because our heater ran a lot this year. She developed a respiratory infection that went on for some time, but as recent as March seemed to have cleared up. She was eating, preening, splashing in her little bath, perching...and then all of a sudden in early June it just hit here again real hard and real fast. Mom moved her into my parronts room started antibiotics again, heating pad, warm vapor, but it didn't help. Please know Peachy did not suffer long and we are sure she was welcomed over the Rainbow Bridge by our friends on BC that went before her. We meant to come by your page sooner, but I see your flock has been just as busy as mine has. Sam, I know this is sad news but let me tell you something...whereever she is (and we know it's somewhere special) she's still singing a song just for you. And I'm sure if you left a note every now and then on Peachy's page, she's have a way of reading it. Much love and hugs dear friend...don't be a stranger, k?

Hi, Sam, it's Layla the Alaskan Timneh!
Wow, aren't you a handsome boy! We have another Gray too, Mojo and he's a Congo and a grump. But he hurt his wing on his way up here and he's just now learning how to fly again. The landing part is getting him down. He keeps crashing into stuff and Mom and Dad go running to him and pet and comfort him. Secretly, I think he does it on purpose. When *I* do stuff to get attention, like chew on the drapes or take the shower curtain off the hooks, I get the spray bottle! But Mom and Dad love me dearly and give me treats too, like King Crab and birdie omelets. Right now I can't go outside because it's 8 below zero and they don't make birdie parkas! And Mom says I'd chew it to shreds anyway. Drop by and say 'Hi!"

Hi Sam, Roscoe, Earl & Max
Yep our mom and dad was tired too but they were up early to go to a sale(moms says like two old nuts hihihi) They sure went to bed early too. Nice to take it easy and rest a spell too. We have been having computer problems and thought they were fixed but tonight had a few more so that is why no emails answered or BC blogging for a few days. I thought mom forgot about my bath this week since she usually does it on Fridays. Well, this morning when she was running the sweeper she put me in the sink. I showed her and pulled the plug out hihihi. Didn’t much matter since she gave me a bath any way! I even got blow dried too and sure did feel good. “Roses are red, violets are blue, and I am so happy to have a friend like you”. Stop in and see me anytime and there is a perch with your name on it so visit me any time. Your always welcome here! V4U. Your kissing cousin, Gus.

Good Morning to ya Sam, Max & Earl
I wanted to stop by and let you guys know Mom now has Mr. Rusty page up and I want all my special friends to meet him. He's taken our home by storm and is spreading his sweet love all about. He's just a baby and I'm hoping you can give Mom some good tips on what's best for this little guy. The Grey's are new to her but after putting up with me and CoCo I'm sure he'll be a piece of cake..He's fitting in really well and loves Mom's attention. Something about her hands he really likes, where ever she places them that's where he goes, he love to nibble on her fingers. She already has him on lot's of fruits, nuts and veges. He's become a little pig and will eat anything he's given so far. Mom tries him on everything. He's now coming out of his cage an wandering about, on top and down the side, than back up to the top which is his favorite place to be..Mom even has him giving her kisses through the cage bars. He's really very special and I want all you guys to meet and get to know him. Stop by when you have time and meet our new brother. With love to everyone from our flock to yours. Romeo

I just sent you a message which I accidently sent without finishing it. Anyhoot, here I am baack. Me and mom do our best to keep each other entertained; do pretty good too. Since moms last roommate passed away, I get to stay out of my cage longer....atleast until she gets another one, which will happen, then I get out as I can, just not for long periods. Mom takes me out in my carrier to walk around the facility, and finally we're getting some relief from the heat and humidity, which means we can go out on the patio. I hope you are doing well, let me hear from you when you think of me, I am sorry I've not kept you updated. I do love ya! Heres a love vote for you? Pierre

Hey fellows, I just heard from a birdie friend, telling me you were worried about me...I thought I blogged Sam, thru him sent a message that mom had a period of a long illness that kept me off the line, mom is doing much better now. Sweetie, someday I may not be able to come back; god will call mom to a heaven in the sky, and I will go elsewhere, probably Aunt Johnnie, her sister, will find me a new home. Or I could sick. If anything like happens...it will, you can check on me thru Kacey, Sweetpeppers site...okay? Right now, theres nothing to worry about. Mom just last week had fourteen teeth cut out of her lower jaw, and so far is recovering nicely, tho she still ddrinking broth and soup as her gums are still tender to try to chew, but they are better too.

Hi everybirdie. My name is SweetPepper and I am on the campaign trail for my best friend ever, Beavis for BOTM. He is the oldest quaker at age 29 here on the BC. I think he deserves BOTM for his wisdom and strengths. He is a very quiet kind of bird but very loyal. He was my first really good friend that I met here on the BC. His mom is a wonderful person who can't spend a lot of time on the computer to campaign for him so I have dedicated myself as his campaign manager. I did it for him when I got him elected BOTW. So please help me make his day by becoming April's BOTM. Thank you, SweetPepper, campaign manager for BEAVIS FOR BOTM!!!

  Hello from Sheba!
Sam! It's been awhile since we chatted! How are you? Chatterin' up a storm, I imagine. Between you and Earl, I bet your house just echos with laughter. As you probably know, I went on a bit of an adventure to Jen and Christine's house several weeks ago. Hard to believe I've been home a week already now. Oh Sam, the girls and their Dad were so wonderful to me, opening their wings and their hearts to my presence and treating me like royalty. I've never had such prompt and decorous service to the mere mention of the word 'cracker'. Ok, that's not entirely true. When I first moved to this home the first word I said was 'cracker' and oh wow, the response that got. In all honesty, it still moves heaven and earth around here but it was an extra measure of nice when responded to at the Dallas home. You know, being the grey you are in color, you're guaranteed the same incredible attention. Grey is the magic ticket at that place! Of course I've seen how well green and white are treated there too; might I say that Jen and Christy should be wearing princess crowns all the time; they're treated as such non-stop. If you should ever get the chance to fly by, drop in, visit for a short time or stay for a while, I assure you, you'll be touched by the love and care that is shown to us feathered creatures of this Earth. I had a wonderful time being there. It feels good to be back home again tho. Dare I say, I think Rainbow actually missed me! When I was ushered back into the bird room he called out 'Hello?' with such surprise in his voice, I believe he'd come to think I was never going to be seen again. He climbed down off his cage and came shuffling over to mine, saying 'Hello!" over and over. The big Oaf... gotta love him for his concern. Hoping all those you love there at your place are happy, healthy, and handy should you need anything. Yours faithfully... S 'V'

  Sam, My Friend
How doth this note find thee? I trust in high spirits and expectations for days that lie yet ahead. Shoot, honestly, I'm just concerned about the next 20 mins or so; will mom be back through so that I can ask, 'Do you want a cracker?' (I go for the subliminal approach... get her to think it's HER idea to eat a cracker and then hope she shares one with me. If it looks like my presence has been forgotten, well, I just ask, 'Is it good?' The humans then feel guilty for not having thought to share their morsel of food, handing over twice as much to make up for their selfishness. Works like a charm. Speaking of speaking, by tomorrow, sometime, a video of yours truly here should downloaded and available for your viewing pleasure (or scrutiny, if it should be so). I have spent some quality time chatting with myself, an act that's been captured on camera, edited and ready to offer up to the BC. In some quiet moment of your day, maybe there'll be 3 and half minutes you could take a peek at this grey friend. I'll bet a video of you would be an immensely amusing bit of entertainment. Somebody yell, 'Lights! Camera' Sam, you're ON!' so I can see and hear you talkin' too! Your dear friend... S 'V' Oh, oh, I nearly forgot; thank you ever so much for the lovely Valentine you sent my direction. You and your cohorts there look so handsome posed together. The card was preciously adorned and signed with love... I could feel it! Thank you, Sam.

  Dear Sam
It's been awhile since I flew in to your page for a visit. I should've been here last Monday as that's my writing day but it appears I missed chatting with you for some reason. Unless, of course, I wrote something offensive and you trashed the note!! Ha. So, in the two weeks since I've been by, I wonder what's new at your place. One bit of news I heard drifting about is that with Earl there being his darn charming self, you have been lured out of your little grey shell a bit more and are joining in on the gab sessions, even daring to be a bit more on the social side. Did I overhear this conversation correctly? Is life taking on a whole new meaning with that gregarious Earl the Grey in your midst? Wouldn't that be something. Things have changed here a bit in the last two weeks for me. Because of my new Imperialistic Policy in the birdroom it was decided that it might be better for the health and safety of the smaller birds of this flock if I were to spend more of my daytime hours outside of the Jungle Room so me and my cage have been rolled out to either the living room or the kitchen, depending on where the action's at (and the warmest temperatures!) In this 'bird-free' zone, I have returned to the Sheba that I once was when I first joined this family; a chatty, happy girl. It doesn't matter now that I talk about Rainbow and his pretty wings... the damage has been done. He's here now. Without the background racket of the 'keets and 'teils, I can now be heard when I speak so combined with my renewed interest in talking and the 'Quieter on the Set' atmosphere so footage has been captured and is, as I beak this keyboard, in the editing process. When it's complete I shall let you know that a word or two... or three can be heard out of me on the BC! Until then, be cool with your homeboys there and love to the family. S 'V'

Hey Sam! Yep, now that you mention it I have been practicing that wing flapping a little more than usual. I think you're right, I'm just now realizing that those wings just MIGHT serve a purpose...hehhee... Of course, it probably helps that I'm in a little better shape than I used to be--better food and more exercise. At my age I don't think I'll ever be flying around the house, but if I can just keep from breaking my neck if I fall off something I'll be happy and so will my human.   Hi from Maxie the WonderBird!
Hey Sam! Had to come over and tell you about my first short flight and gentle landing! I was on top of my playtop of my cage, and the snow/ice came tumbling off the roof on to the top of my sunroom, and I was so spooked that I LAUNCHED myself off the top of the cage and flapped my wings hard enough that I gracefully coasted down to a gentle landing! I was SO surprised, that I let out a "Oh GOD!" when I came to a stop. This is a first ever for me, usually I drop like a rock....lol... Well, I knew that my buddy Sam would appreciate my achievement, so I thought I'd come share it with you. Hope you had a great day! Are you missing Max? Cya...

  Hey Sam!
It's me...Peachy! I know, I know, long time no tweet. Mom kind of was slacker towards the end of last year and of course as soon as she even lets up on the BC again the Cay-MOOSE has to bud in and talk to all his friends first. But that's ok because good things come to those who wait and I can think of anything better than you, my sweet dear friend. How have you been? I sure miss chatting with you. You are my favorite Grey...and mommy's too! Everytime she goes to get the green monster's nails clipped there is a resident Grey there that always reminds her of you and puts a smile on her face.   Sheba here...
With a big, warm hug for you, Sam, my Man. I imagine life is all a whirl that at your place what with the big B&G guy having been crowned King of the BC this week. If you don't mind my saying, each time I pressed that vote button, adding my two cents worth (although something tells me it only counted as one) I was voting for you as well. Your flock is just Tops with this group of mine; each of you so wonderful in your own special way. Max came by my page last week to express his appreciation of the presence of my beak against his vote button but I didn't get the chance to read the note until today. (Rainbow begged permission to claim most of the computer time last week in an effort to get out and about on Max's behalf.) I wish I had known that Earl had a birthday this past weekend and that Vet visits were starting up. When is it your turn? I shall keep you in my thoughts as you head toward certain discomfort, (there is just nothing fun about having a needle stuck in you) and invasive hands and prying eyes. Here's hoping I'm not revealing something you've not yet been told about. I know with some of the critters around here their fate is not revealed until they're at the door of the Doc's place. Knowing where they're going is just more stress than they care to deal with. Sort of like the young humans; they were never told when they had a dental appointment. Mom just told them to brush their teeth and get in the car. At first they just thought it was a trip to the grocery store or some other tasks. As time passed and they caught on to that routine, mom had to craft other means of sneaking them to their check ups. It came down to actually telling them they were going to the grocery store, which they would, then stop by the dentist on the way home! Cruel Woman, don't you think? Eventually it came down to 'You've got a dental appointment today. Be ready at 4.' You can't much fool a teenager I guess so it's best to just give it to 'em straight. You're a teen; maybe you can handle the truth, no problem, you brave and confident Grey, you. Well, what was to be a short note is now hedging on Epic. And here you're likely not to have much BC time what with your Macaw pal large and in charge this week. Know that I'm thinking of you... S 'V'

  Sam!
You have a new Gallery photo; dashing young grey you are. Actually, you and I are very close in age. I'm turning 17 here shortly, the exact date of this event is not known to my mom. She was told that I was 12 years old at the time of adoption in February of 2004 and with it having been five years now since that day I am about to change my accumulation of years to the number 17. Technically I guess that's still pretty young in bird years. "Teenage years" the humans call them. From what I've picked up from conversations, it seems to be the norm for humans offspring of this age to be 'pistols', 'a challenge', 'a bit of trouble'. As the human sons of this family were all boring by those standards, (they were always so well-behaved, i.e. 'boring') maybe it is our calling to act like 'teenagers' while in our teen years. Having recently decided that my favorite spot to hang out is no longer my favorite spot, I have upset the dynamics of the birdroom by forcing change in everything. Having discovered the lofty yet cozy confines of an empty cage that sets a top the finches' indoor cage (see last pictures on page) I opted to stake my claim in this new vicinity, rarely leaving the sparsely supplied perch for anything other than a drink of water and a bite to eat. Thinking to accommodate my new interest, mom shuffled cages around so that mine would be nearer to this new hang out. This of course, threw everybirdie else in the room out of whack, but too bad; I'm happy! Unfortunately, this arrangement has created a death trap for some of the smaller birds; should they step into the small cage while I am out I can trap them in there with the intent to do harm. Thinking to solve that problem, the empty cage was removed from the premises, resulting in my acting very much like a teenager; grumpy. So the cage came back in. *smirk* But it has been ME that has been removed from the birdroom more often than not now, and you know, I'm rather liking this arrangement. When I first moved here, I lived in the kitchen as there was no spare bedroom for birds. (Teenagers lived here!) Not appreciating the necessity of shouting loud enough to be heard over the gaggle of 'tiels that live here, I feel mostly silent, preferring to talk only when out of the room AND out of sight of all humans. (Am I reclusive or what.) With this new arrangement of keeping me out of the bird room more, my conversations have greatly resumed, much to the delight of the humans that remain here. I'm keepin' 'em hoppin, Sam. Isn't that what a teenager's suppose to do with their parents? S 'V'

  G'Afternoon, Sam!
Had me a moment at the computer and thought I'd just swoop over this way to leave you a 'hello'. Thought you might enjoy hearing that this morning, when the youngest of the human sons here walked into the birdroom and discovered me on mom's back (who was leaning over reading a two-year old newspaper that was about to put on the bottom of a cage) I didn't try to hide the fact that I was whining and carrying on in hopes that mom would let me regurg in her hair. In the past, if someone walked in I would either bite mom or bail off of her in an attempt to save my reputation. Today it didn't matter who was watching; I just wanted mom to pat my back, let me hold onto her finger, be thrilled about the 'lurve' I wanted to share. My secret is out and I'm ok with that. Peace to you, Sam. S 'V'

  My Dear Sam!
So wonderful hearing from you last year, just as it was winding down. I regret that life here got suddenly busy and I was not able to persuade my human to assist me at the computer with New Year wishes. I forgive her and am pleased to be able to be here now. I'm going to enjoy the privacy of this visit as it may be one of the last here on just your page seeing as your mom is considering combining the flock onto one page. Understandable but I shall miss your page if this does come about. Your visit with Mr. Joe sounded like such a lovely experience; how intriguing that you seemed to make a heart connection with a man that shared resemblances to your first dad. Proves there was much love for your first human and yet still is. Tee-hee... maybe my mom should don a grey wing and the attire of a Grama and I would suddenly find the Faye I have been missing these many years. Actually, Sam, I have mysterious news; something in my has changed immensely. I've just elaborated on this with Romeo and will repeat a portion of the details with you so that you might know what's happening in my life. I'm not the bird I was when I first signed up on the BC. Private space and alone time are no longer my preference! Picture after picture has been taken of me here of late because of the strange and unusual places I've dared to venture to; other cages in the room, not the least bit concerned that other birds are on my cage, that space that has, up until the last couple weeks, been such sacred ground that should another bird even look at it the Grey wrath of Sheba was brought down upon them! The other day mom came into the room to discover both Kelly and I IN RAINBOW's cage, sitting side by side, eating something we'd found in his food dish. That, my friend, is monumental!! I've NEVER ventured into his cage. On my page now are photos of me camped out in an empty parakeet cage. I've taken to trucking across the birdroom, up the finch cage and into that empty cage where I perch for several hours at a time. (I know some birdies are going to see those pictures and assume that's MY cage and figure that's the reason for my grumpiness... tiny, boring quarters.)

  My Dear Sam! (Page Two!)
The other night, as the lights were dimmed down, I didn't even bother to come out of there and head back to my precious night-time perch inside my own cage; I stayed in that little cage all night! See what I mean by 'something's happened to me'? I'm weird, I tell ya! I've been allowed to perch on mom's shoulder through much of the morning cleaning routine, successfully sitting there without grabbing mom's lip or grinding a hole in her shirt. I've even begun to prattle away for hours like I used to when I first moved here. I've seen many a tiny smile on mom's face as she listens to me ramble away about dogs & ducks, cats and crows. I'm saying things that have not been heard for years!! To top all this off, my Marine's been home and yet I've not shunned mom's love. Instead, I've sought it out, even when he was in the room! I'm tellin' you, something's changed. I truly believe that my being here on the BC has contributed to this metamorphose. Can't say why or how but the timing coincides so I'm going to give your friendship credit! The faithful affection and caring of bird-friends like you, Romeo, Jen & Christy, Ethyl, Lee-Roial and Baby have opened up the floodgates and for that I am eternally thankful. May I give you a deep and heartfelt hug? Thanks for sharing your heart with me, Sam. You're a wonderful friend. And an unbelievably smart one too; "You can do it, Earl!"... I can hear you saying it even now. I'll bet you're full of all sorts of wise and witty sayings, aren't you. Thanks for taking the time to share some of them with me. Here's hoping your new year is off to a stupendous start and that you and I shall find even more time to share a thought or two with each other as the year progresses. With love to you; S 'V'
