Hi! My name is Tedi

I am a Bourke's Parakeet from Ann Arbor, MI.

Teddibird

10 years old   M

Bourke's Parakeet

Spray millet

He likes to hang out on the ledge in the middle of his flight cage during the day.

He hates it when I "mess" with his cage- even when I fill his food dish!

I love my home with room to fly and a great view of the birdfeeder. I want a friend, though...

He loves to watch the wild birds at the feeder. Whenever he hears a bluejay call, he flies around and chirps as loud as he can!.

I like the night life....

Very sad news-Pobbins died on Tuesday. She went into heart failure and could not breathe, so we put her down. She was just about three months short of sizteen. We know that because she was a purebreed, who was dropped of at a county shelter very young, since she was too much for the people. She had been a bit sick, just due to her age, for a while. Anyway, on a happier subject, I will try to get a pic of Yo-yo or Lola on the bike! They are very cute.

  Hi Tedi
Thanks for coming by and chatting with us. You really gave Mom some useful information about what you like to eat and all. Our Pet store has a pair just like you for sale....$249---a bit pricey! Also a normal or blue one was there and just singing his heart out for me. We can find them easier here in AZ. they have them at the Breeder's Bird Fair's for 75. each. for babies. I almost bought one last April. We're going to a bird fair this weekend -- maybe we'll see some again. I just love how beautiful you are. Your Mommy spoils you good we can tell! Scritches for you little one. Thanks again.

Awww! Storm and Fog sound so cute, Wind, too, of course! Their names all go so nicely together. What do Tedi and Sam think of the new arrivals? Do they already eat fresh food, or are you going to have to get work with them about that? I have started taking Lola and Yo-yo on bike rides with me. They both wear harnesses, and sit on a wicker basket attached to the front of the bike. It is so cute! Yo-yo already got really excited when he saw the harness, because he knew he was going to go outside, but now he loves it even more. They both sit there like eagles, with their head down and their wings partially out. Yo-yo loves going really fast, and loudly complains at a slowly speed. When you speed up he starts whistling. Lola likes going a bit slower, and barking (I'm serious, she immitates hope perfectly!)

Well, I will keep working with her. You suggestions about what you did with Daisy are great, kind of like what I have had to do with my other birds. I have found that it does seem to tkae about a year to get most of my guys totally turned around and confident. I do not think you are being to picky. If you get a bird that does not really seem to be "perfect" it just, is, well, not perfect. So just keep looking. Or have you already found some?

Sorry I have not posted in so long, I have been rather sick. Yeah, I am not sure if it is just REALLY bad athritis, or what. Yo-yo has athritis, but he is not like her. I have not seen another seizure, just some head jerking, or times when her left foot starts shaking. I got some aloe detox yesterday, so i am going to try that. She suffers from something I call "small cage syndrome." Meaning she will stay in the same ten inches in her new huge cage. If I move her, or she decides, after getting her courage up, to move she stays in another ten inches. She has two "cages" inside the big one, very rarely do you see her anywhere else. It is not like she is scared of the cage, or does not want to move around. It litterly is like she is in a little ten inch space, and can not move out of it. I have the same problem on the play gyms. She seems to wnat to move to other areas, but she does not. Poor little cat. I bet he is happy with you, even if he does have brain damage. I know an Amazon like that-except we think he was born dumb. He is also one of the sweetest birds, though, (even of he does love to growl at people!) so he makes up for it. Have you gotten any new budgies yet? I know you8 would rescue if there was anything around, but I understand the fact you need bird friends for Windy. Isn't that how it works? Tons of budgies everywhere, but they all disapear right before you would like to rescue them.

Well, she seemed to have stopped, but then started again. I guess the honeymoon period was over. I could tell she was depressed, too many different homes in too little time. I mean , she was kicked out by her owner after she had lived with her seven years! I do ot think her care was good, but she was loved, because she knows phrases like "pretty, pretty girl," "good girl," She's a sweet girl." So I guess she was missing her. I had convinced her to play with toys, and she was really tearing apart a rope toy I made, but hten she stopped and would just eat and pluck, whether I was holding her or not. I hold her everyday and tell her I am sorry, and just let her sit with ne, it is getting better. Fortuantly she will try new foods, so it makes it easier for me! I also give her aloe one week, then a break, then high doses of silver, then a long bit of probiotics to help her. Just since I have gotten her, the daily sinshine I give them, mostly through an open screened window, and showers, have turned her feather form a greasy dull green-black to a more natural color. Do you know anyhting about seizures? I think she might get those. A couple of times I hvae seen her foot jerk up to her neck and freeze there, the toes crumpled, will she shakes back and forth, sortof brething hard/moaning, and her head jerks around randomly. It looks very painful. Her feet are rather funny all the time, I think they hurt her. Sometimes she will just hold them out, or shake them, and start pulling at the toes gently, as if to straighten them. It seems to be the left foot mostly, and when she does her funny jerking thing, it is her left foot she has held up, and her neck seems to be cramped on that side. Any ideas? She is getting along with Frank much better. Their little arguments are clearing up; today he was feeding her. I hope you are able to find some budgies from someone else, so many needs homes, though of course you know that. Still, I am sure Windy is really wanting a friend again.

Yes, the budgies were doing pretty good eating food, but then they met Yo-yo. He was the easiest bird ever to put on new food, as soon as I put it in the dish, he eats it! Absolutely everything! So, I am hoping Frank will get to be Friends with Lola, the new quaker. She was brought in to Petco on the shoulder of someone because she said she did not have time for her anymore, though she had had her for seven years. Loal had started plucking, so just trying to keep her form doing that. When I put her on the floor next to Frank, they had a few beakings, not really fighting, sort of "who are you and what are you doing?" Frank knows he is a bird, but I think he has never seen a quaker before, like he was sent home at too young an age. He did seem interested in him, and she just played hard to get. I think she was interested in him, but she was kind of bossy, though she was interested in him, and she almost let him preen her. If she does not want to be friends with him, that is ok, but may as well hope!

Well, if you do get Zoe, I am sure she will be very happy with you! Do you mean she had the cats actually PUT DOWN, or just gave them to the shelter?! Either way, that is very sad. I have not tried Dragonfriut for Frrank, he does like hibiscus, though. Yo-yo and the budgies loe eating out of their wide diches on the floor of the cage. Frank refuses to eat out of a dish on the floor, unless it is his toy bucket! He does love it when I hide treats in there. He prefers his treat kabob-he not only eats everything I put on it, he loves hanging from it and swinging! I think alot of the little arid area parakeets eat off the ground, I guess that is where most of the food is.

Poor owner of Zoe! I can see why he would be a little annoyed, but is that your fault? Animals have preferences, too. I know what you mean about finding abird that "clicks." Some how, getting one just because it is cute and a nice species leaves you felling a little, umm, "warmed-over", if you knonw what I mean! I hope the quaker is very happy with his new person. More importantly, I hope his new person is very happy with him! Quakers are such sweet birds, even when they are being bad. Frank never bit me until he went hormonal. I am waiting for that cycle to end right now, along with the scars! He is just one of those birds that goes absolutely nutting in the late spring and summer. As long as you keep a lot of band aids, he is still very funny and sweet!

Bird fairs are so exciting, that and a pet fest in one weekend, very cool. I am sure your birds are looking forward to this as well! I am thinking of something quieter for Ava- she does not really like things hopping around her (well, she never did, but now even more so.) So maybe a tiel. Of course, I could ask around and se if I can find one someone is trying to get rid of that has a similar personality to Ava's. I am glad you get to see Zoe again; I bet she will have a great time at the Pet Fest if you take her!

Ava is doing better; she is now in a spare cage I had, with some lovely ladders and rope swings! She always comes to the front of the cage when I come into the room and talks to me and ocks her head to listen. It is so cute! I really think she would like a friend, though. I still had them all together in the same cage, with the door open all the time. So I do not really know what went wrong. It did seem a bit territorial, so maybe was just scared that he would be shoved in to a corner, so he shoved everybody else into corners! I have emailed Phoenix Landing (rescue) and asked them if they have a disabled bird or very quiet bird that would make a good friend for Ava. Yes, I heard losing six drops was too much blood loss for a budgie... or maybe it was nine. I will have to look that up again. Anyway, they are so small, any blood is a big issue! I can imagine your cockatiel would be a bit tired after losing that much blood! Ava lost quite a bit, which left her VERY tired. She almost looked pale, which is hard to do with bright yellow feathers!

Well, I am stilll having a little trouble getting all my birds to settle in. This is possible stemming from the fact that I can no longer leave Yo-yo, Peter, and Ava all in the same large cage. Peter is acting very strange, and has attacked Ava twice. The first time I thought It was possible she had just gotten her foot caught somewhere. After I put Ava back (despite the fact they were not acting right around each other-should have been a clue) she was definatly attacked. Many of her tail feathers were pulled out, including a blood feather. The ones that were left were pulled all funny and wee died red. He also got two toes on the other foot. One of them is pulled funny so It has healed crooked, and the other was just a bad cut. However, it is hard now to get them to heal. She keeps wanting to fly and climb and play, but whenever she does try to do that, (besides the fact she keeps falling because it is very hard for her to use her feet)
She starts breathing very hard and her feet turn bright red and purple, and swell up. I do not know how to convince her to play in a quieter manner. I already have her in aquarium. Any suggestions?

I did finally find a home for the kitten, and I think it was a very good home too. It is perfectly alright about not writting, I have been busy as well with the move and all. It is great that your petsitting is doing so well, I hope you have not gotten any that were really annoying! My friend ays she is still taking the grey out every morning; apperantly she is getting better and better (the bird, I mean.) I am hoping to see if I can volunteer at the animal shelter, as well. The one I was near before did not feell very friendly about volunteers, lets put it that way. If I am volunteering, I can make sure any birds that come in are getting good care until they are adopted (as well as helping take care of the other animals, of course) I have found that although the intentions are good, information about bird care is not really out there, and with all the other animals to take care off.. yeah. So I will see.

The food is really expensive, and unfortuantly VERY few stores, online or not, carry it. Many, many, people have contacted me about the kitten, but once I tell them I am about 50 minutes east of Raleigh, nobody emails back. We even called one of them becuase they gave me their number. All we got was the message machine, and she has not called back. It is very hectic here; we are moving next Monday! I am going to do my best to not stress my birds too much, so I hope it all goes well. Once we move and can start fostering birds, though, for Pheonix Landing, so that is cool. I am still hoping that I mght be able to figure out how to biuld an avairy, but who knows if that will ever happen! Sylvan Heights was going to let me handfeed one of their african grey babies, but unfortuantly I can not find a hand feeding formula without soy in it. So sad. How are your petsitting clients?   Well, I went to the petstore near my doctors office, and they had it, at $21.99 for 4 lbs. Very expensive. Since we are moving soon, I wanted to see if I could find a good home for him. He is eating solid kitten food soaked in formula. I figure at this point, as playful as he is, a good home with somebody who will take care of a little kitten is a good idea. I know you should not rehome them till 7-8 weeks, but he does not have his mother. He is the link so you can go see some pictures.   Well, I say really clean, but that is if you ignore various spots on the floor with bird poop stains. Oh well, I try. Yeah, and when I am not doing very well health wise, the bird area could be a little better. But overall, it is fairly clean. When I move (in two weeks!!) I was going to use a clear plastic shower curtain to protect both the wal behind the cages and the bird art and posters behind the cages. Oh my gosh! Big news. First, nobody at the entire bird fair carried the two seed mixes I can feed my birds (yes, they contain things I am allergic to, wierd) or the pellet mixes. Very sad. Second, I am handfeeding a three week old kitten! My neighbor saw the mother cat (feral) and three kittens at her barn last Sunday. Then they were gone the next day. On wesnday, one of the kittens was back, yoling at the top of his lungs! I guess he was abandoned. We managed to catch him, so now he is being babyed by Hope (younger border collie). She had puppies before we got her at the shelter, so concequently she treats everything as a puppy. The kitten is pink, and his eyes are just starting to change, with a few teeth coming in. He has to be fed every four hours or so, Though fortuantly I did manage to teach him to go to the bathroom on his own in the litterbox. I named him Sandstone Bal Boulder. Yes, funny name, but it suits him, and I just call him Sandy-Bowl. I hope not to every have him come in contact with Arthur or Kipperkites (other cats), I know he would upset them. Just five more weeks until I have to figure out how to rehome him to someone who will neuter him. Oh boy.

Yes, my grandmother had to take care of her mother's canary (long time ago, obviously), and that experience totally turned her against birds. She just thought they were so messy. I think this could be partially due to the fact that that cannary was likely in one of those old-fashoined cages without even a lip on the bottom to catch debre. I keep my bird area very clean, especially when she is here. So now Grandma goes around saying how much cleaner my birds are than canaries! She does love them though, and they love her, for she always compliments their feathers. Have you gotten any where with your chew toys? Have you ever given your birds korabi? (I know, I am not a great speller!) I mixed some (pre-cooked) in with my birds eggs the other day and they just loved it.

Yes, I think the blonde border collies were taken of the list as a color that could be uses in show. My grandmother is here, and Frank really has developed a great liking for her. I had to get him of her with my shirt a carry him upstairs like that! He did not want to get of her arm, for she loves complimenting his feathers. Quite the way to make friends with Frank! I have trouble keeping Peter and Ava and Yo-yo in shredder toys as well. That is part of the reason I am so excited about the upcoming bird fair- I hope to get lots of those toys at a better price than I can find them elseware! I make many of my birds toys, and some of their perchs are branchs from the woods, but sometimes there are things you just have to buy. Has anything happened with the building?

I have seen tricolor border collies before, and last summer there was a blond border collie looking for a home.
The building sounds really cool, I hope they don't end up tearing it down. I am so excited because the yearly bird fair near me is on the 26th, Yay! I can not wait. I discovered how to make a great new foraging toy. You know those plastic cups they always give out, with the lid that that has a hole in the middle for the large ribbed straw to go through? Well, they are made out of nice heavy plastic, so I thought I could use them as a bird toy. I strung for of them together; onnthe bottom, two that are the same size, facing each other so they form a cavity. On top of that I strung a large one facing up with a smaller lid inside it facing down. It sounds easy, but Frank has a lot of trouble getting the treat out of the bottom lids. (Or atleast more trouble than he usually has!)

You get to recycle 5! We can only recycle 1 and 2. That is just not fair. We use bags for litter boxs as well! Unfortuantly, Frank is not stick trained, minor problem. I read an article, however, where the author talked about how one of her birds was pillow trained, and then it hit me! I have this stuffed Flamingo that Frank shares a love/hate relationship with. (He really likes being with it, but he also loves pretending it is his top enemy.) Anyway, he will step up on that! So now, if I can not hold him without getting bitten, I can still get him out or put him back, whichever the case may be at the moment. I am able to train Frank really well with praise, and with a simple tactic that I call "smartness". I tell him that he is so smart, and doesn't he want to show everyone else how smart he is? or Frank, this is a very special game just for smart birds like you! I do not know why this works, but it really gets him into the trick, as unorthadox as it is. A playpen is a really good idea. Our dogs eat cat poop too. Actaully, only one of them does, and she taught it to the other. I think she was a puppy mill mother that somehow ended up at the pound, she has so many funny quirks that can be explaned with this theory.
I hope you do not get in to much trouble with Zoe's owner! I personally like dogs when they have a normal, short haircut. We had a great Easter, I hope yours went well, too!
