Pepper is a rescue from a home where the Mother died and the adult children didn't want her. She was confined to a small cage and was on a horrendous diet. A close Bird Friend rehabbed her, got her eating healthy food and addressed a HUGE part of the problem: a decent night's sleep. Pepper came to me in August and now it's up to me to train her. She is a sweet bird and works hard during training sessions. She already has several behaviors she is quite proud of doing. She's a fast learner and learning tricks boosted her self-confidence- . Teaching her tricks gives me yet another reason to praise her. And this is something she very badly needs. I think she was largely ignored. But she is quite happy now and her feathers are growing back in like crazy. My companion parrot behavior training has helped me tremendously with training her in "living room survival" and she has adapted beautifully. She has such a sweet disposition and seems incredibly grateful and happy. Every new day is a good one for Pepper.
She has been having a few health issues lately as a result of her former care, but we're working with an Avian Vet to strengthen her liver function. It doesn't seem to effect her disposition however. She's a very happy bird. I think she has grown to trust me, and if all the kisses on my hand when I get her up in the morning are any indication, she might even like me!

Hi! My name is Pepper

I am an African Grey from Hollywood, FL.

"Little Girl" and "Bing Bang"

25 years old   F

African Grey

She eats like a Dock Worker! I have never seen a bird eat like this. Man, what an appetite! She'll eat anything. But she likes almonds.

She loves getting into the shower. She also likes sitting on my knee. And of course, she loves going to the Pub with Parker

Pepper is still learning a lot...but she gets better every day.
She's just a happy little girl. She's still a bit skittish, but she's calmed down tremendously.

"She is patient and won't give up on me. I don't know very much but I am learning how to be a social bird. And you's more fun to be nice and be social with people! Patricia taught me how to be that way. I'm so proud of myself now and I get praised for every little good thing I do. Life is fun!"

When I make her meals in the kitchen, she stands on her playstand and says, "Thank you! Thank You!", while waiting for her food..

"It's never too late to have a happy life."

Read about my life at Bird Talk's "Memo to Parker and Pepper"...It's about me! Oh yeah, and my dumb old brother.

  Hi! Pepper,

What a story and I'm so happy to hear you now have a Forever Home just like me. My name is Oz and I'm a Rose Breasted Cockatoo. Mommy is my 3rd owner and she says that I'm now in my Forever Home. I'm so happy cause I really like it here. She also wants to know if I know that I'm a Cockatoo cause I'm sweet and very quiet. What does she mean by that? Want to be Friends? Please stop by sometime and see me and my Flock cause we love getting company. Before I go I'm gonna vote for you. Bye for now.

P.S. Mommy says that she doesn't know how to tell you this but those pictures down below are not You or African Greys LOL!

How nice to meet you in pictures here on the Bird Channel. I've read your Bird Talk stories for months and laugh with every one. I didn't get to hear all of one article as I ripped the corner off the page before mom got to the bottom of the first column. I'm going to assume that Parker did something dastardly and you gave him a look for it. Safe enough guess?

Your story is a touching one. I'm so sorry you spent even a day in a too-small cage with inadequate food and attention. That you yet remain willing to trust another member of the human race speaks volumes about your incredible nature and character. You're a beautiful girl, Pepper. I wish you much success in your life's journey, particularly when it comes to living with a 'dumb brother'. Ha!

VOTE4U, Hi, Cuties!! I can't believe we are neighbors!! You guys are really famous!! (whoops, maybe your Mom didn't tell you) And here Mommy tells me I was famous from just my little photo in Birdtalk a few months back and my photo and article last on on birchannel about us IRN's. LOL I talk lots so maybe we could talk sometime. Oh, wait Mom doesn't let me have her cell phone anymore since I bit the little rubber thing off the top, what's an antenna for anyway? Maybe we could meet for treats, Mom & Dad takes me lots of places cause I love to go "bye-bye", especially in my stroller to the art & bird shows, I don't know why people stop & stare, I see those skin babies in strollers all the time! But mine is pretty yellow, like me, so maybe that's why! Come visit my page, oh yeah I have a new sister, she's grey but not "a grey", he,he,he! She still bites Mom but Mom's working with her to feel safe & comfortable here. She was at the pet store for her first 1 1/2 yrs and too many kids teased her. Momma's only been a bird Mommy for 2 yrs with me & she got me to stop biting, Ok it took months but she says it seems Libby is just not getting better and it makes Mom sad. Hey your Mom is really bird savy, does she have any suggestions, you guys don't bite, right? he,he,he! Hope to hear from you soon our new So FL BBFF's. (Mom started BBFF on BC & it's our "crew") Love ya Lots, Louie, XXXXOOOO (yes, I like giving kisses & sugars, Mom taught me)

  Pepper is doing so well!
Pepper is coming along beautifully. Many feathers have come back. Sometimes they appear and then fall out again mostly due to the follicle damage she has I think, but many seem to be coming in and staying in. Pepper now has pants! She also has an almost fully feathered back and feathers growing on her sides under her wings. When I first brought her here, she just barely had feather down on those spots.
She loves taking showers and her appetite is wonderful. Such an appreciative little eater! She has learned to get neck scratches and relishes time with me for her nightly head rubs. She's come a long way from being the scared, biting, cagebound bird that came to me a year and a half ago. I'm so very proud of Pepper.

  Pepper Progresses...
Pepper is continuing to play with toys more and more. I don't think she had any idea what they were for and I'm not sure if she even had any, but she is beginning to mess around with a few; doing a little chewing and tentatively touching and exploring. This is a good sign of better things to come! I'm very proud of her and pleased with how much she has come out of her shell. She even lets me stroke her beak and I can touch her feet without her having a cow about it. We've also been working on "potty training" her. She's doing well; no more dumping down the back of my shirt when she sits on my shoulder. She's getting "trash can" trained to the cue of "Bombs Away".

Come visit me, Parker (The "Memo Bird" in Bird Talk) & Pepper.

  Pepper Is Doing Well!
Pepper seems to be gaining ground. She has now allowed me to touch her beak and will put her head down for me to scratch her neck feathers. She politely sits on my knee and she no longer shakes. Her trust is building, and she seems to be very relaxed when she is with me. She is also beginning to play with toys. I'm not sure she had any in her former life!
So it's going well, and she seems to ber very happy. And her appetite? She still eats like a Sumo Wrestler!

Come visit me, Parker (The "Memo Bird" in Bird Talk) & Pepper.

  For Patricia
Hello, you sent me the website for Phoenix Landing and I was browsing through....however I thought this would be in Florida. Is there a branch down here that doesn't appear on the website? From what I read it was Washington D.C. and North Carolina. I thought since you were in Hollywood, FL, not too far from Miami, that this would be a local rescue. Please let me know. Thanks.

Mom found a great new home for Snuggles. She wasn't planning on rehoming him. Snuggles took one look at George and demanded that he be picked up. Once George picked him up Snuggles melted into his chest. It was so touching mom got tears in her eyes. Snuggles never acted that way with strangers before! Anyway Snuggles moved in with George and his family and he's VERY happy there. Mom's sad but she says now she can rescue another bird that needs her and find them a great home too! ~Alex

My brother has a poem entered into the Prevue Cage Poem Contest. Please take a moment and vote for Parky. His poem is on page 12 of the entries. You can vote every day if you like. If Parker's poem wins, Patricia is going to donate it to Phoenix Landing, a non-profit parrot rescue and adoption organization. Parker's picture is the third one on page 12 and he is the African Grey holding a piece of fruit. Thank you for your kindness!

Your story kinda sounds like mine! Mom is still working with me but by improving my diet my attitude has improved too. I only ate cheep wild bird seed before. Now that I get 2 to 3 diffrent meals a day I refuse to even touch seed! I lived in a dog cage with just a little broken bell for a toy. Mom and the vet are shocked that I still have all my feathers. My mom wants to take some parrot behavior training too. Where did your mom get hers from? ~Snuggles

  Pepper Is Speaking Up!
Pepper is becoming more and more comfortable with herself. More "comments" from her past are creeping into her vocabulary. I swear I heard her say, "Want a Carrot? Hmmmm?" a few days ago. And She started saying, "Hey", and "Pepper is good bird! A good Bird!" So we'll see what else she comes up with as time passes. She's going to be 16 this month, so I'm sure more will pop out.
