I found an ad for her at the local feed store. I went and picked her up the next afternoon. She was the most pitiful thing I had ever seen. She had been raised by her parents in an outdoor aviary, had very little human contact, and was malnourished. With gentle training I tamed her so that she would not be so stressed around us. Now she is the sweetest little bird ever and is VERY spoiled.

I have a movie on Youtube where I am doing my tricks. It is called: The Smart Cockatiel. You can also find it under the user name: PringlePoirot

How's my sweet little 'Tiel friend?? Kelly tells me you and those two Grey guys have been putting up with all sorts of smoke and ash from the fires that are too close to your house. Oh man, I'm really sorry about all that, along with the worry you're all going through over your safety and the destruction of the wilderness around ya. Here's hopin' you can keep yourself distracted by whittlin' on wood and millet and whatnot. Or maybe you've got a collection of eggs to keep you busy???

This big lug's not got anything new t'tell ya about 'cause everything's pretty much the same as it's always been, which is okay, I guess. I keep busy with the same stuff: tryin' to get into the closets, draggin' a beat-up t-shirts or old towel around inside my cardboard box or shreddin' some piece of wood that's attached to my cage somewhere. I got a new sleeping shelf not too long ago. It's not made out of oak like the last one was so I'm mowin' my way through the pine boards. Fun!

Thanks bunches for stoppin' by the other day while my big beak was in the spotlight. It was like old times, gettin' to chat with friends for the day. And just like old times, I lost my typist before I was all done writin' thank you notes which explains why I'm just now gettin' here to your page t'say it was great t'see you on mine.

  HI PRINGLE!!!
Thanks for your vote...I sure appreciate it..V4U..Today my campaign blog I will give you a bit of information about the cockatiel that Mom thought was also interesting to know...The earliest reference to the cockatiel dates back to 1792,when it was described for scientific purposes. However, it was probably not until the late 1830s that cockatiels were first brought to Europe-at about the same time as the budgerigar-and for many years the cockatiel remained in the shadow of that other popular member of the Australian parrot family. Not until the 1950s did cockatiel mutations start to appear, and during recent years the cockatiel has finally achieved a strong international following, with numerous colors established and new color combinations still being developed. As its popularity increased cockatiel enthusiasts founded specialist societies that attract an international membership, in various countries, exhibition standards have now been established for the different varieties, including the normal grey. The cockatiel is classified as a member of the cockatoo family and was originally named the cockatoo parrot. The word cockatiel may have been introduced by a London bird dealer who shortened the Dutch word 'Kakatielje' which translates as 'small cockatoo'. Have a nice Tuesday...May birdie wing hugs ...Sam :o)

  HI PRINGLE!!!
Thanks for your votes..I really appreciate them....Yes you better get back to your eggs...V4U...Today I will finish the second part of "Treating a Sick Bird"....Make sure that water is freely available; a sick Cockatiel will find it easier to drink from an open hook-on-container, rather than a tubular drinker.Put food within easy reach; sick birds can sometimes be persuaded to feed from the hand, but do not cause them stress at any stage. As the cockatiel's condition improves, you can gradually lower the temperature of its surroundings. Before returning a bird to its regular cage, make sure that it is fully recovered and re-acclimatized. Egg-binding is another very serious condition that often happens to female Cockatiels.Sometimes they continue to lay eggs and they must be watched closely. Because one egg might get stuck in the vent and if it is not removed it could become fatal to the cockatiel.A bird in this condition must be handled very gently, so as not to break the egg.The most effective treatment is usually an injection of calcium, given by a veterinarian. This appears to restore the the muscular activity, so that the female cockatiel can lay the egg without difficulty. In extreme cases your veterinarian may undertake surgery as a last resort..Check your cockatiels diet after a case of egg-binding. It may be that insufficient cuttlefish bone was available to them, or perhaps they could benefit from a supplement containing Vitamin D, which is responsible for moving calcium stores around the body.....Have a "HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY EVERYBODY"....Many birdie wing hugs....Sam :o)

  Hello Pringle~
I hope you are having a fun day! It's still cloudy and rainy here but then it wouldn't be a holiday weekend if it wasn't rainy!Hahahahahahaha
Mom is working her regular schedule so we are getting things ready for her to start her work week tonight. I hear that the cages are going to be cleaned too so I'm not too happy about that. My night cage gets put into mom's shower so I don't ever see that happen. I would get to cranky if I had to see that!
Mom and Ian went to see X-Men yesterday and really enjoyed it. Jennifer didn't want to see it so she hung out with me! We watched Project Runway repeats and it was awful! The snacks were good though.
The family went over to a new Mexican restaurant last night for dinner. Mom said is was okay but not worth the money. They don't go out to eat much so when they do they like to go somewhere spectacular!
The voting for Sam 212680 to benefit Iowa Parrot Rescue starts at 12am ESt tonight! I know I can count on you for a vote!
Enjoy the day and I hope it is just perfect! Please give the boys and your mom our love!

  Hello Pringle~
I hope you are having a great day! The rain came back here last night. We had this beautiful sunny week and now the rain is back for the weekend!hahahahaha It always happens like that. Mom is working and we don't BBQ so it doesn't really matter to us. Nothing stops up here because of the rain because if it did nothing would ever get done!
The fundraiser for Sam 212680 is this Sunday the 25th. I know most birds are already voting for him but if you know some birds that I don't, perhaps you could ask them to drop off a vote!! Falco, Willie and Peppino's mom and Raffikki's mom are going to match the donations so it is going to be a huge gift for the birds who live at the Iowa Parrot Rescue! I know it's a holiday weekend but I hope every bird can spare a few minutes to vote. It just happens that Memorial Day weekend is the day I came to live with mom! I think that is a great reason to celebrate!
I've been doing my part by ripping up mom's notebook with all her notes in it! She has to write everything down so that she remembers who is having a hatchday, etc. I have been shredding the old stuff so she doesn't get confused with too many lists! It's the least I can do since I am so very good at ripping things up!
I hope you enjoy the day and that it is just perfect!
Leaving a vote and a big hug for all of you~
Love you ~ Sugar

  HI PRINGLE!!!
Thanks for stopping by with your vote..V4U..My campaign blog today will be about "Some of the things Cockatiels can get that will cause health issues"....Cockatiels are usually hardy, long-lived birds and rarely prone to illness. With sensible management, they should live well into their twenties. You are most likely to encounter health problems with newly acquired birds, rather than with birds that are well established in their quarters.By keeping recent purchased birds on their own for about a fortnight, you have an opportunity to ensue that they are healthy and you can treat them for parasites before adding them to your bird aviary....Here are a list of some things that you can find on your new bird, Parasites,Red Mites,Roundworms,Tapeworm,Giardia, Bacterial diseases and sometimes Feather Plucking...Tomorrow I will talk about treating a sick bird...Hope your Friday is a great one...Birdie wing hugs to you...Sam :o)

  HI PRINGLE!!!
Thanks for stopping by with your vote...I really appreciate it...Just pecked a V4U...Today my campaign will be "Cages for Cockatiels and where to Position them in your home"..A wide array of cages is available today, but some are to elaborate and ornate for cockatiels.Circular designs, for example, often look very attractive, but actually allow the bird very little flying space.Choose the largest possible cage, because cockatiels are often more active than other parrots, preferring to fly, rather than climb around their quarters.Even is you let your pet fly around the room, it will remain fitter if housed in a large cage.Rectangular cages are a better choice and you should be able to find a modular system without too much difficulty, now that increasing numbers of pet shop are stocking them. The flexibility of this system has great advantages; no longer do you have to buy a cage of a specific size;instead, you can obtain component parts that clip together so that you can design the enclosure yourself. It certainly depends on what is your choice...Next...Positioning the cage...The best position for the cockatiel cage is in a corner of a room close to a window, but never in direct sunlight. Here the bird will feel secure, knowing that it can only be approached from the front or from one side.Make sure that the cage is sufficiently high off the floor,at about eye-level if possible. This will make it easier for you to have contact with your pet and service is living quarters.Even traditional square parrot cages are quite heavy and need a secure base if it does not come with one.It may be possible to obtain a stand, but these are not always very robust.Larger cages may have casters on them which adds stability and ensures that the unit can be moved easily. The winter months if you are afraid of a draft where the cage is placed by a window you should move it to another secure place and purchase a light that can be used used over the cockatiels cage that will give it the proper lighting and also a bit of warmth will come from it....Hope you are having a nice Monday....Many birdie wing hugs to you.....Sam :o)

  Hello Pringle~
I hope you are having a great day!

As most of you already know, I came to live with my mom when her sister was unable to care for me anymore! I have known mom for 30 years and been a part of the family for that long! Mom use to bird sit me so when I needed a new place to live she was the logical choice! That and the fact that she has always loved me so very much!

To celebrate my 6th anniversary of being with my mom, I am holding a fund raiser for Iowa Parrot Rescue. I support this rescue every month and am amazed at the awesome job Mike and Abi do to take care of birds in need of a home. I have many friends who are in forever homes who started out at IPR. I am a lucky bird since I have been with my family for 30 years and will continue to live with them until the end of my life. There are many birds who are not as fortunate as us! They have already adopted out many birds this year but for some reason, no Amazons! Being an Amazon, I want to help out my fellow zons!

On May 25th-next Sunday-every vote that Sam gets will mean a dollar contribution for the Iowa Parrot Rescue! You can help by leaving a vote for Sam that day! I really appreciate every vote that will mean money for the IPR! Tell your friends who may not know me and Thank you in advance!!

I know the BC has been slowing down and many birds have lost interest lately but I hope you will all get out to support Sam and the IPR!

I hope your day is just perfect! Please give the boys my love and your mom too!

  HI PRINGLE
Boo Boo announces before Coris speech that they woke up to a dusting of snow this morning and then she wishes all the birds a lovely day.
Many of the birds inhabiting the south american rainforest depend on old growth forests for their winter stay before migrating north in the spring. the deforestation and destruction of the rain forests are wrecking havoc on migratory birds. while in the north migratory birds might live entirely on insects upon arrival of the old growth forests they will depend entirely on fruits to sustain them. logging for timber by cutting down old growth tress plus the fragmentation of the forests by the oil and gas companies by drilling and fracking are causing an alarming decrease in bird populations. this hasn't even covered the topic of all the toxic spills that have occurred polluting fresh drinking sources and polluting the air. I’m sorry to say the latest news from Galveston Texas is not good.
The slick caused by the recent toxic spill in the Gulf of Mexico is drifting toward Chester’s Island, a critical bird habitat in Matagorda Bay. The island hosts tens of thousands of breeding waterbirds each year. This crisis is far from over.
thats why i would like to talk today about trees and their importance.
THE VALUE AMOUNT OF A TREE IS $193,250. according to Professor T.M.Dass of the university of Calcutta. One tree living 50 years will generate $31,250 worth of oxygen, provide $62,000 worth of air pollution control, control soil erosion and increase soil fertility to the tune of $31,250 recycle $37,500 worth of water and provide a home for animals worth $31,250. this of course does not include the value of the fruits or beauty derived from trees.

  HI PRINGLE
Ravens have inspired a large body of folklore and legend which is not entirely negative. i would like to concentrate on the more positive tales . for a good laugh you can google the Raven saying Never More Never more WHACKA WHACKA WHACKA on u-tube.

the vikings worshipped and revered ravens and its image was carried on all their banners and shields. since ravens had the power of human speech they were thought to fly all over the world everyday returning at night to tell of what they had seen and heard. the irish phrase"ravens knowledge" applies to anyone who appears to see and know all. in europe the raven was considered a mystical and magical bird. Alexander the Great was said to have been guided across the desert by two ravens sent from heaven. in Briton legend maintains that England will not fall as long as Ravens remain in the tower of London.

the raven was connected with the creation of the world by american indians who made people out of a rock and a leaf. the raven showed the leaf to the people and said "see this leaf" you are to be like it. when the leaf falls from the branch and rots there is nothing left. thus the raven also brought death to the world. one indian tribe believed he raven was a mythical ancestor of their tribe and performed many wonderful deeds at the beginning of the world. one such deed was determining the particular task a bird should perform, where they should live and what their color should be. for instance the American Robin was was to give pleasure to man through its beauty. all birds were told to dress differently so they could recognize each other. the Blue-Jay was told to pie its hair high and tie it with a string. the magical Raven could transform itself into whatever shape it chose and remove its feathers like a coat. as a spirit of creation he had not beginning or no end.

  HI PRINGLE
Cori decides to do something a little different today and tells Boo Boo to take a seat with the rest of the bird audience because today she is talking about Blue Jays. Boo Boo clapped her wings with glee upon hearing this and listens intently to Cori.

noisy and fearless and found throughout the eastern united states and canada but also extending westward and sometimes spotted in western states. there are a few legends that blue jays have acquired over the years. southerners say Blue Jays were yoked to a plow by a sparrow and the mark left by the ole can still be seen on the blue jays breast.
the Cherokee indianas suggest that if find a blue jay feather, soak it in water and then gently brush a childs eye with it, the child will become an wary riser. this will not work if the feather is taken from the bird, it must be found on the ground.
indians from the hudson bay area believe the Canadian jay crowed out a warning whenever the tried to sneak up on a Eskimo camp and for this reason the indians often killed the Canada Jay
because Blue Jays do not always retrieve all of the acorns and other seeds they bury in the fall, they are friends to the forest by "planting" new seeds.
around the time automobiles became common, a Jaywalker meant a rustic bumpkin who didn't look where he was going and a "Jay" often referred to a silly person perhaps because they were considered vain about their gaudy plumage.

HAPPY TGIF DAY

  HI PRINGLE
the 300 species of Hummingbirds feed mainly on red tubular flowers with a long beak with an even longer tongue that laps up the nectar. they also eat small insects that live near the flowers like spiders ,beetles, ants aphids and gnats. these small flying gems are anything but cowardly, unafraid of humans and battle furiously among themselves defending their territory.observing this, aztec warriors believed they would be reincarnated as hummingbirds upon death in battle. they also believed the hummingbird was one of the original creators of the universe.
in one mayan legend the great god was busy making different kinds of birds for the world. when he was finished he found a tiny pile of scraps left over and not wanting to waste anything decided to make the tiniest bird of all. after making a pair of hummingbirds he called all the birds together to celebrate. many birds brought gifts. the house finch gave red feathers for the male to make a scarf, which the male then gave 1 or 2 of these feathers to the female. the sun gave a present also and shone down on the couple making their feathers gleam and sparkle like gold and jewels. since that time hummingbirds feathers glow with an iridescence in the sun.
indians of the american south west considered hummingbirds to be bringers of rain. it was felt the little hummer had a direct connection to the god of rain and would bring much needed water to this region. water jars were decorated with paintings of hummers. Hopi and Zuni tribes include the hummingbird in their ceremonial rain dances

Boo Boo does the HAPPY HUMPDAY dance before Coris speech:
the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds in the northeastern united states. one early naturalist felt the birds rapidly beating wings sounded like a bumble bee and named it the Humbird. the Ruby-Throated migrates from South America to southern canada flying non-stop , 500 miles, across the Gulf of Mexico.in the western united states the Rufous Hummingbird ranges farther north than any other hummingbird going as far as southern Alaska. the Annas Hummingbird resides in California wandering sometimes into Arizona and along the Rockies north into Canada . a popular myth was that the Hummingbirds must be hitchhiking a ride on larger birds to be able to travel such long distances.

hummingbirds have almost the highest metabolism of any warm blooded mammal and feed almost continuously often becoming torpid at night to preserve their energy. the female laying on her eggs doesn't have the luxury of lowering her metabolism at night since she must keep her 2 eggs warm. the intricately woven nest made up of spider web silk seems to protect her and her eggs from the cold.
in one Mayan legend birds who asked a tribal wiseman how to build a sturdy nest were sent to the hummingbirds for instructions.

Boo Boo makes Cori gargle with cepacol before her speech today and then makes her spit it out into a little brass spittoon.

A Hummingbird rarely makes any sound other than the faint :hum of its beating wings and will make a high pitched chirping sound when angry. the reason a legend says is greed. the Hummingbirds extensible tongue allows it to reach deep into a flower to obtain nectar. according to legend the Hummingbird swallowed too much nectar at one time and lost its voice in the flower. that is why the Hummingbird dashes from bloom to bloom so swiftly- it is searching for its lost voice. another legend states that the Hummingbird hibernates instead of migrating. written in a old book of folklore "Hummingbirds live by the dew and juice of flowers. they die or sleep every year in the month of october, sitting upon a a little bough, in a warm and close place. the wake in the middle of april, after the flowers be sprung and therefore call themselves the revived birds.

perhaps one day the Hummingbird will find its lots voice in a flower and the sound will be lovely to hear.

  HI PRINGLE
Boo Boo stands in front of the audience on this monday and gives a small introduction before Cori's campaign speech. since everybody is anxiously waiting for spring we thought we would end our campaign week talking about Hummingbirds, for when they return to the colder regions spring must be here even if it doesn't feel like it.

When the pilgrims stepped ashore in Massachusetts in 1620 the indian chiefs who greeted them wore strange, small glittering ornaments in their ears-they were stuffed hummingbirds. Cortez, the spanish conquistador was astonished when he met Montezuma in Mexico, to see that the Aztec emperor and nobles of the court were arrayed in long coats that shone brilliantly when the sun struck them. when such a cloak was presented to Cortez, he was amazed to find it made entirely of hundreds of hummingbird skins.

hummingbirds, the smallest of all birds(the Bee Hummingbird from Cuba is the size of a bumblebee) have almost been completely obliterated from the earth several times. somehow they managed to survive. in the 19th century it was fashionable to decorate ladies hats with them and millions were killed for it. in 1860 more than 500,000 hummingbird skins were auctioned in london. eventually laws were passed in the united states and london making it illegal to trade in hummingbird skins plus fashions changed so hummingbirds slowly made a recovery considering they only lay 2 small pearl sized eggs a year and are the prey of larger birds and squirrels. the destruction of their forests where they make their nests and pesticides are are now increasingly taking their toll on the tiny "jewels of the sky"

MORE IRISH FOLKLORE:
there is no irish name for the Magpie. it is generally called Francagh, a Frenchman, though no one really knows why. many odd tales are told of this bird, rising from its quaint ways of its cunning and habits of petty larceny. it is not considered evil, though to meet one alone in the morning when going on a journey is considered a evil omen, but to meet more than one magpie beacons good fortune according to this old rhyme:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR MIRTH
THREE FOR MARRIAGE
FOUR FOR BIRTH
FIVE FOR HEAVEN
SIX FOR HELL
SEVEN's THE DEVILS his own self
EIGHT FOR A WISH
NINE FOR A KISS
TEN FOR A SURPRISE you should be careful not to miss
ELEVEN FOR HEALTH
TWELVE FOR WEALTH
THIRTEEN BEWARE its the devil himself
another similar poem is:
ONE FOR SORROW
TWO FOR JOY
THREE FOR A GIRL
FOUR FOR A BOY
FIVE FOR SILVER
SIX FOR GOLD
SEVEN FOR A SECRET NEVER TO BE TOLD
seeing three Magpies on the left hand, when on a journey is unlucky, but two on the right hand is a good omen
in scotland it was believed that the bird held a drop of the devil under its tongue

A SINGLE MAGPIE IN SPRING FOUL WEATHER WILL BRING from the birds habit of feeding together only in fine weather.
if you see a solitary Magpie you can ward off bad luck by spitting over your shoulder three times doffing your hat and saying GOOD MORNING MR MAGPIE, HOW ARE YOU THIS FINE DAY or GOOD DAY, HOW IS YOUR WIFE? in hopes the Magpies mate is hiding nearby to turn your sorrow into joy.
