 I saw an ad in the paper for a Sulfur-Crested Cockatoo & always wanted a cockatoo. It was love at first sight.
The previous owner had to get a 2nd job & her family did not like Gee.
He was neglected & abused from the previous owners, how much we don't know.
Gee cuddle up to me a lot the first week I had him. It took my boyfriend a week before he could pat him and an additional week before he could hold Gee.
The previous owner did tell us that, "when Gee got on the floor she would 'gently' sweep him to his cage." It was 2 or 3 months before Gee would not run to the back of his cage. I let him play with the broom handle a few times so he learned not to be afraid of it. He still does not really like it & does not really like sticks coming near his cage.
He is protective of the 3 smaller birds, i.e. he likes to watch & makes sure I check everyone's food & everyone gets fresh water at night.. |

This morning, mom cleaned and fed animals in a very full mammal nursery: 8 possums, 3 flying squirrels, 1 fox squirrel, 4 red squirrels, 3 chipmunks, and umpteen gray squirrels. There was one surprise there, though, a Chinese 3 toed box turtle! After she got back, she and her sister went to their favorite nursery. Mom bought a lot more than she planned, but it's an annual trip, so she figured she may as well splurge. The hanging baskets are spectacular, we'll have to post some pics for everyone. Mom had a fun trip, for sure! Mom had 3 tours this morning, and tonight she's taking Nghi's parents out to dinner. She's excited about it. They came here to be with Nghi's sister, who is expecting her first baby next month, but they came to Pittsburgh first. Mom will take them to a Thai restaurant for dinner tonight. Tomorrow she is going to an Earth Day event with animals from the center, the to dinner and the opera so we may not get on line at all. Mom says if she gets up early enough, we will though. Today my pics are some macaques on Monkey Island, where they just ran loose, taking food from people, and stealing it from the snack bar there. The next pic is of a tuktuk, an open air taxi in Bangkok. They are fun to ride, as long as you negotiate a fair price. The last one is Nghi in an orchid garden posing with blue and gold macaws. Well, mom is home from her trip, with luggage but without the camera. She knows she had it leaving Tokyo, so it was lost on the plane. Hopefully we'll get it back soon. It was a long flight in both directions, and the 2 weeks passed so quickly! They spent 6 days in Thailand, 2 days in My Tho on the Mekong river, 3 days at Nha Trang (pronounced nyetcheng), and the rest of the time in Saigon. We'll be doing details in the next few days, but mom is still really tired, needs to do laundry and shopping, and has to spend time with us! Falco was nippy with her, I won't let her take me from the cage, although I'm soliciting head scritchies, and sweet little Willie is still her friend. Hope you are well and happy, talk later. Mom was in the menagerie this morning, doing the education animals. Some of them have been put on strict diets, because the director doesn't think round qualifies as a shape for a wild animal. Twitch, the gray squirrel, is so chubby, it's a wonder he can climb! The best part of the morning came when mom left, though. They asked her if there were goldfinches here at home, and she told them she fills the thistle feeder every couple of days, so they gave her a goldfinch to release. That's the best part of volunteering there, the chance to see an animal go home where it belongs. The bird flew right up into the hemlocks when mom opened the box.
Please keep Sweetpepper's family in your thoughts and prayers today, Grandpa is getting his surgery.

Today's blog is kind of brief because mom was out shopping all day and is tired. Remember the other day when I said skulls got damaged easily in the fossilization process? Well, here are some examples: The really white one is coelophysis(Triassic) and it's flat as a pancake. This is a cast based on the real fossil that was removed from part of that bone bed we saw earlier. Obviously the damage that was done was post mortem, and the mud that landed on the little guy smashed his skull flat! The second and third pics are of the real dryosaurus(Jurassic) skull, do you see how it's all mashed to one side, with one eye higher than the other? Well, that also happened in fossilization. The first pic is that of an Edmontosaurus, a huge hadrosaur(Duck billed dino) who lived in the Cretaceous. His skull is also smooshed to one side, so it happened even to the big guys! More tomorrow! I'm running for BOTM next month, hope I can count on your support. Our snow didn't stick or stick around long yesterday, it was gone by noon yesterday. Mom worked in the small flight aviary today. That's a place that usually houses chimney swifts, screech owls, mourning doves, smaller birds that need flight experience before leaving(of course, not all of them at one time). Guess what was in there today? A POSSUM! She also did the recovery room, the ducks and goose are still there, as well as a few turtles, and the mammal nursery, where there are 5 squirrels and 3 possums. It was a lot of cages, but they were done in a short time. Hope you are having a great day where you are, it's mid 40s here and lots of sun. Hello; Sky here wishing all my friends TGIF. As promised today we are getting ready to head off into the heart of the Peruvian rainforest as we explore the beauty and mystery of the Tambopato River, located south east of Maldonado Peru.
We will travel through the most beautiful, most untamed territory as we explore, the home of the world's largest Macaw Clay lick. While there we will meet hundreds of parrots, Macaws and other parakeet species that daily frequent the 130' cliffs along the Tambopato River's western banks.

There has been a crew working on our road out front. There is trucks, pavers and lots of other noisy equipment out there. I was curious so mom set my play gym in front of the door so I could watch out the storm door. Mom got the clothes hanging out on the line today again. it’s a good drying day for them though. Yesterday mom got spring fever or is that fall fever? Anyway when she got her work done she went walking on the trail and said she enjoyed that being out there. We didn’t get to go outside for a few days while mom cleaned our cages because it got pretty cold here on Saturday. Its warmed up some and we went out today though. Moms cousins grands came to visit us while we were out there and they talked with us a bit. We just looked at them. Yesterday mom set us outside under the walnut tree in our little cages while she cleaned our big ones. This little sparrow bird kept cheeching to Chi chi and she would cheech back. The Sparrow sat on the pickup the whole time we were out there till mom came out to bring us back in and he flew away then. “People often ask how can you be friends with someone you have never met? Well tonight skin sis and the grand came up to visit. Skin sis and mom made some new recipe and then they had corn on the cob and cheeseburgers and salad too. Oh you should of seen dad chasing a fly in the house. Mom says he leaves them in so he can chase them. He kept chasing this one and couldn’t get it and gave up and went into the office and it followed dad in there. Dad shut the door and he got him so that was good. I am finally molting though I have been itchy and wanting the old feathers out they havent been coming out till now. I keep loosing the ones that were clipped when mom took me last to get done in May. Mom probably wouldn’t of had me clipped then but I was going to stay with skin sis and mom thought it would be better if I were clipped. Mom said it was too hot to go outside here today. I was happy cause I don’t really like being out there with all them wild birds making noises. Mom had a great time on her vacation! She got to meet a lot of other bird moms and dads, and the party was so much fun. They also got to see a lot of Orlando, including a beautiful lake in the city. Mom took an airboat ride, too, and held an alligator. We were all happy to see her when she came home, though! Even the doves yelled with joy. Mom's granddaughter was very good to us, but there's nobody like mom.
