Hi Everyone, I have some great news to share with you all. I was entered into my very first ever bird show by my birdsitter/bree- der. I was in the novice division for senegals. In two days I came away with a total of 6 ribbons. 4 first place ribbons, one 4th place and one 5th place ribbon. Could have won more but since my wings are clipped it held me back. When mom takes pics of me with my ribbons she is going to place them here on my page for all to see. She is so proud of me. Both my senegal parents were top show winning birds. Brother Maxi also won honorable mention for looking so good for his age of 15 3/4yrs.. ............. Met her at a bird fair. She took an instant liking to me and chose me as her new owner. I wasn't going to buy a bird but when she chose me, I just had to take her home. It was instant love!... ...HATCHDATE JAN 26, 2003..

  Hi Sweetpepper
Hello everyone, Chuey here with my very first BOTM blog. I am looking forward to a fun, and interesting month sharing each day with all my friends. Let me first begin by congratulating our new Queen Zeena on her awesome July campaign, and hope she enjoys her reign in the BC Castle,
The party is going strong over there and the food is greyt.
I plan this month on taking us all on an adventure and sharing some interesting information about birds along the way. I've asked my cousin SKY to provide us with his miniature ponies and horses so we can take a trail ride together. You'll need to bring along your sun screen and some extra clothes, just in case.
Today I want to take a moment to formally introduce myself as some of you might not know me yet. I am a very spoiled female Cockatiel who shares my cage and life with Mikey D. Mikey and I have one son, Kasper. Kasper is a very talented whistler and already can whistle the song " shortening bread". Kasper's photos are in my gallery.
I'm off to check on the ponies, but get ready to hit the trail tomorrow on day one of our adventure. "See ya later partners! "
love Chuey 245908

Come visit me, Mikey D, Birdie Haven Park-Fun for ALL SEASONS, Chuey, I'm running for BOTM in August, Sweetpea, thanks for BOTD friends, Zoey & Cricket & Nakita.

  Hi SweetPepper
I'm so glad that Kacey is doing good. I hope the results are all good too.
Ah yes, our last spa day of the week. Want to go to lunch after?
That outside cage ... is that the one you got when we had our visit? It looked like a great cage, good for travel and good for patio time.
We're having a heat wave ... it was 73 degrees today with sun!!!! I had a nice sunbath on the patio. But tonight should be 51 degrees, better than 45! That nasty polar vortex is playing with us again. I wish it would completely go away. Hope everyone had a nice day. G'nite.

  Hi Sweetpepper
Hope the vet was not far and easy to find too.
Well the parronts had another early meal today and I got my condo cleaned earlier too which should of made me more aware but you know how that goes. Anyway off they went to leave me. Said they were going to the farm…doesn’t dad know his mom doesn’t live there any more?? Guess he misses it since he did grew up there and they got to see the nephew and his family a bit. Then the parronts visited old friends that live up that way that dad went to school with. They got home in time to tuck me in for the night so guess that was ok and I was a bit tired from the vet visit yesterday so got caught up on my beauty sleep while they were gone. “I have learned its not what I have in life but who I have in my life that counts.“ Leaving a vote for you …your friend, Gus (RIP Chi chi)

  MY DARLING WIFEBIRD
WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT THEY SAY....SIZE DOESN'T MATTER. I SURE HOPE THAT'S TRUE, BECAUSE DAD SAYS I AM A SHRIMP. OF COURSE, HE ALSO SAYS I AM TOO SMALL TO EAT, SO I SUPPOSED THAT IS A GOOD THING. MOM SAYS HE IS JOKING, BUT I AM NOT SO SURE.

LAST NIGHT DAD POKED HIS HEAD IN MY DOOR TO SAY HI TO MOM AND ME, BUT I WAS RIGHT AT THE DOOR AND HOPPED FORWARD SO HE COULDN'T CLOSE IT WITHOUT SQUISHING ME. SO HE STARTE TO WALK DOWN THE HALL, AND I WADDLED RIGHT BEHIND HIM. HE WENT SLOWLY, SO I DID TOO. AND WHEN HE STOPPED, I DID AS WELL AND GAVE HIM MY BEST EVIL EYE. BY THAT TIME MOM HAD COME RUSHING INTO THE HALL AND SCOOPED ME UP TO GO BACK IN MY ROOM. I AM SURE I PUT THE FEAR OF THE SENNIE INTO HIM THOUGH.

IT IS WAY TOO HOT HERE. UPPER 90s TODAY, SO WHEN WE WENT OUT FOR A SUNBATH AT 9, BY 9:45 WE HAD TO HEAD BACK INSIDE. I AM SURE I COULD HAVE TAKEN IT, BUT MOM WAS GETTING TOO WARM. SHE HAS HER PRE-SURGERY APPOINTMENT WITH HER GI DOC AT 5 AND IT WILL PROBABLY STILL BE AT LEAST 90 WHEN SHE GOES. SHE IS VERY GRATEFUL FOR GLORIA'S EFFICIENT A/C.

MOM IS A LITTLE CONCERNED BECAUSE I AM NOT REALLY EATING MY PELLETS. SHE IS MAKING UP THE DIFFERENCE WITH FRESH FOODS AND NUTRIBERRIES, BUT IT WORRIES HER. DAD SAYS IT IS JUST BECAUSE IT IS SO HOT. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

  Hi Sweetpepper & Kacey
hello everybirdie. Zeena here on my final day of July. Today I want to take the time to thank you all for all the wonderful comments, and helpful topic input. When any bird runs for BOTM, it is a family affair. No one can make it to the BC Castle with out the help and votes of their many friends. I have met many awesome birds this month, and have learned a great deal about the various species we visited.
With a flock legacy of BOTMs to follow after, it was a challenge to equal their efforts and enthusiasm. Sky, Little Angel (Adler) and my frother Casey set the measure by which I hoped to inform and share with you. I had the most wonderful month. Thank you one and all.
This being my final BOTM Post I decided to stop by and visit with a beautiful and unusual species that is a delight to watch.

The Black Palm Cockatoo is considered to be the most beautiful of the Cockatoos.

However, the Palm Cockatoo is endangered in the wild and is mostly kept for breeding purposes. While the Palm Cockatoo is known for being loving and affectionate, just like any Cockatoo, they are also very needy. If you own a Cockatoo, then you know why they are called the "love sponges" of the parrots. And you also know that they are the most needy of all the pet birds and often love their owners too much.

Cockatoos require a lot of time and attention--much more than any other pet bird. If you are able to spend at least two full hours a day with your bird (out of his cage), not leave the house for 6 or more hours everyday, cook for your bird and provide him with a variety of healthy foods, handle the loud screaming, afford the large cage and huge amount of toys, and deal with the adjustment stage that can include aggression, then rescuing a Cockatoo might be a great idea. Make sure you research as much as possible because you don't want to add to the already out-of-hand rescue problem.

Because so many Cockatoos are left to rescues, I highly encourage you to visit your local parrot rescue, see what I'm talking about, and consider rescuing one of these poor majestic creatures instead of buying one in a store. If you can handle all this, then this really might be the right bird for you.

But keep in mind that Black Palm Cockatoos in particular are very hard to find. They can cost upwards of $16,000 because of their rarity and endangered status. So, don't get your hopes up if you have your mind set on this species.

With the way the weather has been, a good soak in the hot tub sounds delightful! We can get our talons done, too. I think maybe roses today...
We are missing summer! It's another cool day here too, but it's supposed to hit 80, so we'll see what happens. There was a strange glow in the sky this morning, and mom actually put on sunglasses. She told us not to stare at it, in case it gets scared and goes away. Even if it's gorgeous today, it will not be a pool day for mom because of the appointment with the eye surgeon. We'll let you know what's going on tomorrow.
Meanwhile, I hope you have a good day today and get some sunshine and blue skies, along with all the cuddles you have come to expect. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Sweetpepper
The vet we went to tonight is 13 miles away so that wasnt bad and probably my old vet was further away then that so that was a plus too.
Mom was busy again this morning and had to go over to skin sis too after she got her cleaning done. When mom got back she was getting things together towards supper since it had to be early eating so mom and I could visit that new vet. I went in my wingabago cause it was a bit chilly out and I like I can see out every where in it to. The vet was nice but again mom just talked to him and I didn’t need to have any grooming done so that made it lots better too for me. He did all the right things though and mom said when we need one this will be the one we will visit for sure. “I have learned its not what I have in life but who I have in my life that counts.“ Leaving a vote for you …your friend, Gus (RIP Chi chi)

  Hi Sweetpepper & Kacey
Hello to all my BC friends. Zeena here with today's BOTM Post. Today we will take a look at one of natures most beautiful birds, also my Momma Deb's" dream-bird", the Hyacinth Macaw.
The largest species of macaw, Hyacinth grows to be up to 40 inches (1 m) long. The Hyacinth Macaw survives today in three known distinct population in southern Brazil, eastern Bolivia and northeastern Paraguay. In 1990, the wild population was estimated to be 2,500 birds. The world’s captive population is probably much larger, numbering in the thousands. Today, the wild population is less then 600 individuals. They are critically endangered in their native habitat.
Of the 145 species of parrot in Central and South America, 45 are in danger of extinction. All 18 species of macaws are threatened. The primary causes are habitat loss and heavy exploitation for the pet trade. The Hyacinth Macaw is especially vulnerable to capture and habitat destruction because it is noisy, intrinsically fearless, predictable, and dependent on palm trees. Hyacinth Macaws do not breed every year even under the best circumstances, so the predation on chicks is particularly bad for the species’ survival. Since captured young survive so poorly (up to 99 percent die between capture and final sale), adults are sometimes trapped through liming of perches or use of baited clap-nets. Still, for every macaw that arrives safely abroad, it is likely that five died on the way.
The United States is the largest market for the exotic pet trade. In the last decade, 8.5 million birds, at least 85 percent of birds captured in the wild, were imported or smuggled into the United States. Even when the export of birds is controlled, the domestic bird trade often is not regulated. Another threat to the Hyacinth Macaw is the increased commercial sale of feather art by the Kayapo Indians of Gorotire in southern Brazil. The feathers from up to 10 Hyacinth Macaws are needed to make one headdress. In addition, ranchers kill Macaws because they believe that Hyacinths damage palm trees, which ranchers use for fenceposts, and scare cattle with their noisy behavior. In some places, local people still hunt Macaws for meat. Add to this clear-cutting of Rainforest and you can see the danger the Hyacinth population has to becoming extinct within the next decade.
Compound all the above and it is easy to calculate that their best chance of survival as a species is through captive breeding. Selling in Canada at upwards to $40,000US each these beauties of the Rainforest will remain one the worlds most desired Macaw species.
One more Question for Thought.
It is often people’s love of animals that causes them to desire exotic animal pets. What can be done to educate pet owners about the impacts of wild-caught birds and other animals?

  Hi Sweetpepper
The guy collecting parking fees at the museum said to mom we are lucky this year. We are getting 2 Septembers! It's been another cool, cloudy day here. There were thunderstorms predicted, but so far we haven't seen any.
Mom's tour this morning was a group of day care kids ranging from about 7 to 12 years. They wanted animals, so mom started in Bird Hall, of course. She also did a ton of mammals on the second floor, both North American and African. Then she took the kids out on the balcony to see the giant pterosaur, Quetzlcoatlus, with its 40 foot wing span. There was a reason, though. When that guy stood on the ground he was as tall as a giraffe! They had just seen the giraffe, so mom wanted to show off the pterosaur. It was a good move, because the museum had moved the herps to that balcony! So while they were out there, mom did frogs, salamanders, and snakes, too.
We are hoping for better weather tomorrow, even though mom won't have a chance at going to the pool. Her eye surgeon's appointment is in the afternoon.
I hope you are seeing warm weather, sunshine, and lots of cuddles, just for you! Hugs, Falco

  HELLO MY LOVE
YES, I GUESS I AM SMALL FOR A SENNIE, BUT MOM SUSPECTS THAT THE PEOPLE WHO HAD ME BEFORE I FLEW INTO DAD'S WAREHOUSE DIDN'T FEED ME PROPERLY....PROBABLY SEED AND SUCH. I WAS APPROXIMATELY 2 YEARS OLD PER THE VET WHEN I FIRST GOT HERE, AND SO THOSE IMPORTANT GROWING YEARS ARE A MYSTERY.

MOM AND I GOT OUTSIDE FOR MY SUNBATH ABOUT 915 TODAY. MOM WANTED TO MAKE IT EARLIER, BUT I WAS PLAYING HARD TO GET. I COOPERATED JUST BEFORE SHE GOT TOO FRUSTRATED TO KEEP ON. I HAVE IT TIMED JUST ABOUT PERFECTLY NOW. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE IN THE LOW 90s AGAIN TODAY SO SHE HAD TO SIT IN THE SHADE, BUT THEN HUMAN SKIN DOESN'T LIKE THE SUN AS MUCH AS BIRDIE FEATHERS DO. WE HAD BLUEBERRY PIE WHEN WE CAME IN, SO ALL IN ALL IT WAS A NICE MORNING. MOM SAT AND READ WITH ME FOR AN HOUR AFTERWARDS.

MOM GOES TO THE GYM TONIGHT FROM 4 TO 6. TRAINING FIRST AND THEN THE TOUGH ZUMBA TEACHER. SHE ISN'T MEAN OR ANYTHING, SHE IS JUST REALLY ENERGETIC AND SHE DOESN'T HAVE A LITTLE BREAK FOR WATER BETWEEN SONGS. MOM TAKES ONE ANYWAY. SHE MAKES SURE SHE STAYS HYDRATED. EVEN SO SHE IS REALLY TIRED WHEN SHE GETS HOME, AND SHE JUST SITS WITH ME AND READS TILL BEDTIME AT 8:30. I INSIST ON LIGHTS OUT WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN.

  MY LOVELY WIFEBIRD
I WONDER WHY YOU ARE SO MUCH LARGER THAN I AM. IT SURE IS A GOOD THING YOU ARE NOT THE BOSSY TYPE, SINCE YOU OUT WEIGH ME BY ABOUT 40 GMS. AND THERE IS A SPARE GRAM ON YOU, YOU ARE JUST BIGGER. MOM WONDERS IF WHATEVER HAPPENED IN MY EARLY YEARS BEFORE WE FOUND EACH OTHER AFFECTED MY GROWTH.

GLORIA IS NOW IN PERFECT CONDITION WITH HER NEW PAINT JOB. MOM HAS TAKEN VERY GOOD CARE OF THE INTERIOR, AND IT IS LIKE NEW. THE BACK SEAT IS SO SMALL (THE MANUAL SAYS NOT TO PUT ANYONE OVER 4'6" BACK THERE), IT IS REALLY MORE OF A LUGGAGE COMPARTMENT. MOM KEEPS HER PILATES MAT THERE, AND NO ONE HAS EVER SAT BACK THERE. MOM SMILES EVERY TIME SHE WALKS UP TO GLORIA NOW. SHE SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT PAINT JOB SOONER, BUT SHE ONLY FOUND OUT ABOUT THE MAACO GUY A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO. THEN SHE HAD TO DECIDE TO SPEND THE MONEY. AS DAD SAYS, IT BEATS A CAR PAYMENT.

MOM MADE A BLUEBERRY PIE THIS MORNING BEFORE GOING TO THE GYM, SINCE IT IS TOO HOT IN THE AFTERNOONS TO TURN ON THE OVEN. NOW I WILL ADMIT SHE TOOK ME OUTSIDE FOR MY SUNBATH FIRST, AND SHE DID SIT IN MY ROOM WITH ME WHILE IT WAS BAKING. HOWEVER THE MORNING BEFORE GYM IS MY TIME, AND I RESENT GIVING UP EVEN A MINUTE OF IT. SO WHEN SHE CAME HOME FROM THE GYM AND CAME IN MY ROOM I TOTALLY IGNORED HER. THAT'LL SHOW HER. ALTHOUGH I HAVE TO ADMIT SHE WAS NICE ENOUGH TO PUT THE BELLS BACK ON MY FAVORITE PLAY MAT (FROM YOU, MY LOVE!) WHICH MAKES IT PLAYABLE AGAIN. GOTTA HAVE MY BELLS!

  Hi Sweetpepper & Kacey
Hello to all my dear BC friends, Zeena here with today's BOTM POST. Today we will take a look in brief at a touchy subject that has people lined up on both sides of the debate. It involves the breeders verses conservationists. I am not sharing this to side with either group, but as a general interest topic. These are exerts from an interview with Tony Silva a world renowned expert on Aviculture.
Interviewer; In light of all the talk about breeders, verses the conservationist groups, how can we make our legislators, the animal rights radicals, and the conservation elitists, understand that what we as private aviculturists do, is valuable and should be encouraged, not strangled with laws and regulations which in the end, will result in extinction, not preservation, of exotic birds?

Tony Silva: "We need an active, strong avicultural industry. Breeders must be allowed to breed for the pet industry, unimpeded by regulations and laws that simply do not work for us or the birds. The birds we raise for the pet industry supports the work we do with endangered species. And we have to do this, because third world countries don't care about what happens to their birds, they simply don't care. We have to look at individual species like the Spix. If it weren't for private aviculture, there would be no Spix Macaws. And the Brazilian government recognizes this! They say, 'Look, we don't care if we ever reintroduce Spix Macaws. We're just happy that authorities say we'll still have the species around, even if it's not in the jungle. '
Interviewer; Has the establishment of the CITES treaty curbed the explotation of wild Parrots

Tony Silva: I never would have thought imports would stop, because to these countries, birds are a renewable resource. In Southern Argentina a number of years ago, they were packaging up Patagonian Conures in cans and selling them to the Japanese as delicacies because nobody wanted to buy them as pets or to breed.

Look at the Tucuman Amazon. It is so rare they are difficult to locate in their habitat or aviculture. Officials in their range gave permits to shoot them because they were raiding the cornfields . Then there's the Scarlet Macaw in Surinam. It is on CITES Appendix I, but it is perfectly legal to bag up to 3 a day. The natives use them for food. Trade in birds' countries of origin will go on because these people have to survive. There is such a lack of education -- and you're going to tell them not to shoot this or that bird, or to protect this tree! And people won't believe this unless they see it. It's like the Hyacinth Macaw study. The researchers have a few lunches with bird trappers and gives their opinions as first-hand knowledge. But it's not accurate. Without captive breeding many species of Parrots the world over will cease to be in the next ten years. We need breeders to guarantee there will be any Parrots left in the end.

Hi pretty neighbor lady, from Queen Angel Christy
This morning when our daddy finally finished the morning paper changing route and food and water dishes, he sat down and powered up this cursed machine! He was so not ready to see his beloved Angel in the BOTD spotlight, he almost lost it! He had just came back inside from his morning prayers at her grave, today will be a solemn day of celebration at our home! There are certainly more beautiful birds in the world, but none was ever more loved, sadly, there can NEVER be another Christine! We have another fabulous day here in Rock Island, give our love to all in your great home, see ya tomorrow...

Love from Queen Angel Christy, Jenny Lynn, & our loving family

PS~We are all so proud of our Toos, their only demand is to be talked to, loved, played with, and have us spend time with them, that don't seem like to much to ask....

  Hi Sweetpepper
I'm so happy that things at the vet went well.
It's cool here today, don't expect the temps to go much above 70. If that's the case, mom will probably scrub the porch railings, since she finally found the Simple Green she was looking for. It's a good cleaner for the outdoor stuff. Of course, if it gets warmer, that plan will die in favor of the pool. It's open for such a limited time, mom likes to take advantage of every day she can go. Labor day is coming too soon! Nothing much else going on; Mom has a tour coming up tomorrow at the museum, and Thursday is the big eye appointment. Gene will be going back to Germany on Saturday, so she'll probably go visit him on Friday. Other than that, the week is a slow one, but we're never bored, and neither is mom. Hope you are having a great day and getting lots of sunshine and scritches. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Sweetpepper
It seems when kids come around that are noisy I like to scream when they yell too. Guess some of it has to do with living with just mom and dad and its usually quiet around here. I hope Kacey and you did well at the vets today!
It rained and stormed last night and today some too. It has cooled off a lot and mom said too cool for me to go out today even between the raindrops! Since moms cousin is recuperating from her surgery and is off work her and mom have been chatting back and forth a lot. Moms cousin just lives next door and loves to sew and joined a quilt club and keeps showing mom things she has made. I know mom is wanting to do a quilt project but keeps saying where to find the time with all her other craft projects she has going on. Maybe that will be a winter project and I will help her with it I am sure LOL. “I have learned its not what I have in life but who I have in my life that counts.“ Leaving a vote for you …your friend, Gus (RIP Chi chi)

  MY LOVELY WIFEBIRD
YES, MOM IS VERY HAPPY WITH GLORIA'S PAINT JOB. SHE WILL LAST A LONG TIME NOW. EVEN THOUGH SHE IS A 2001, SHE ONLY HAS 88,500 MILES ON HER BECAUSE MOM ALWAYS REFUSED TO WORK ANYWHERE WITH A LONG COMMUTE. IN FACT, HER DREAM JOB WAS 1.5 MILES FROM THE HOUSE. SHE MADE LOTS OF MONEY BACK THEN, WHICH IS WHY SHE COULD AFFORD AN AUDI TT QUATTRO. SHE COULD NEVER AFFORD SUCH A NICE CAR NOW, SO THAT IS ANOTHER REASON TO KEEP HER LOOKING AND RUNNING GREAT.

I WAS REALLY FUSSY WHEN MOM CAME IN THIS MORNING AT 8:30 TO TAKE ME OUT FOR MY SUNBATH. SHE CAME OVER TO WHERE I WAS SITTING ON MY BIG SWING (IT'S SO BIG IT DOESNT SWING, MOM BOUGHT IT BEFORE SHE HAD A GOOD IDEA OF WHAT SIZE TOYS TO GET ME. BUT I LOVE IT AS A PERCH.) ANYWAY SHE BENT DOWN FOR ME TO CLIMB ON HER SHOULDER AND I JUST KEPT NIPPING AT HER ARM TO LEAVE ME ALONE. SHE FINALLY GOT DOWN LOW ENOUGH THAT HER SHOULDER WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME, SO I DECIDED THAT WAS GOOD ENOUGH AND CLIMBED ON. AFTER THAT IT WAS A SIMPLE MATTER OF WALKING OVER TO THE CARRIER AND I CLIMBED RIGHT IN. HAVE TO MAKE SURE I KEEP MOM TRAINED PROPERLY! WE GOT OUTSIDE ABOUT 8:45, AND ANY LATER AND IT WOULD HAVE TOO WARM. WE ARE IN THE 90s AGAIN TODAY.

SO HOW DID IT GO AT THE VET'S OFFICE TODAY? WHAT DID HE SAY ABOUT KACEY? IS SHE ALL BETTER AND NO WORRIES? AND ARE YOUR NAILS JUST BEAUTIFUL? I THINK THEY SHOULD GIVE YOU POLISH WHILE YOU ARE GETTING THEM DONE. IT WOULDN'T DO FOR ME, BUT YOU ARE SUCH A PRETTY LADY....

  Hi Sweetpepper
Hi everybirdie, Zeena here with Monday's BOTM POST. Today we visit a beautiful song bird making a new comeback in homes around the globe. The Pekin Rokin, a song bird of extraordinary talent. I wish to thank all my many friends for their votes and stopping to leave comments on my page. I read them all.
The Red-billed Leiothrix or PEKIN ROBIN (Leiothrix lutea) is usually found in India, Bhutan, Nepal, Burma and parts of Tibet. This species is a bird of the hill forests, found in every type of jungle though it prefers pine forests with bushes. It has also been found at elevations ranging from near sea level to about 7,500 feet.

The species was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands in 1918 and spread to all the forested islands except Lanai. Its population on Oahu crashed in the 1960s and it disappeared from Kauai, but is now common and increasing on Oahu The leiothrix was released in Western Australia but it failed to become established. This species was also introduced in Great Britain but permanent establishment was unsuccessful. It was introduced to France, where it is now established in several areas.
Adults have bright red bills and a dull yellow ring around their eyes. Their backs are dull olive green, and they have a bright yellow-orange throat with a yellow chin; females are somewhat duller than males, and juveniles have black bills. It has also been introduced in various parts of the world, with small populations of escapees having existed in Japan since the 1980s. It has become a common cagebird and amongst aviculturists it goes by various names: Pekin Robin, Pekin Nightingale, Japanese Nightingale, and Japanese (Hill) Robin, the last two being misnomers as it is not native to Japan.
Pekin Robins don't fly frequently, except in open habitats. This bird is very active and an excellent singer but very secretive and difficult to see. It makes a wonderful addition to a mixed aviary with good cover provided. Housing one pair per flight.
The standard fare for Pekin Robins in captivity comprises a mix of dried insect food, fresh fruits and mealworms. they especially like fruitflies and live crickets especially in the breeding season.
Pekin Robins are difficult to find for sale but well worth the expenditure and effort to find them.

  Hi Sweetpepper
I sure hope Kacey gets a good report at the vet today!
Today is a rainy day and rather cool. I don't think it will hit 70 today. Mom cleaned and fed 13 skunks today, but her record of not getting sprayed still holds, knock on wood! She also took care of those little hawks who are quite grown now, and in the flight cage. (The flight cage is a pre release area for raptors, the center staff makes sure they can hunt, land, preen, do all the birdie things they'll need back home in the wild.) As well as all those, mom also cleaned and watered 3 more juvenile red tailed hawks and 5 screech owls. She also did some dishes and laundry while she was there today. Both of those areas tend to back up quickly if someone doesn't pitch in and help.
After the center, mom went shopping, but now she's home with us, with only one load of laundry to do, so she's basically ours for the day.
I hope you are having a pleasant day filled with sunshine and love. Hugs, Falco

How nice you and Kacey got outside to enjoy the nice weather. It was very hot and humid here today so I didnt go out. Mom was worried I was stressed when the rugrats were screaming so that is why she made me come in too. Once it calmed down I got outside again though. Sure glad to hear kacey is feeling better!!

The milonga was lots of fun last night and thanks to all that make it happen! Mom and dad went down to skin brothers to day. Dad needed to get skin brother to do a weld job for the trailer that belongs to the trail. Mom went along to see the grands since she hasn’t been down in a while to see them. She had some things to give them too. The girls have long black hair like their mom and it grows so fast too. Its so black and shiny and thick and even dad remarked how pretty theirs was. They sure are growing up so fast!! The oldest one goes to the senior high this year and is a little nervous about that but am sure she will do fine. ”Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward”. THAT FURBALL WAS SMART TO BACK OFF WHEN YOU LUNGED AT HIM. MY SWEETPEPPER IS AFRAID OF NOHING, AND I BET YOU WOULD HAVE TAKEN A PIECE OF HIS NOSE IF HE HADN'T MOVED QUICKLY ENOUGH. I KNOW CASSIE THE CAT HAD A HEALTHY RESPECT FOR ME AND MY WINGS. SHE RAN WHEN SHE SAW ME ON MOM'S SHOULDER.

THE MILONGA SURE TURNED OUT NICE, BUT I STILL SAY THE LADIES USED AN UNFAIR ADVANTAGE IN THE VOLLEYBALL GAME WEARING THOSE BIKINIS. VERY HARD FOR US GUYS TO CONCENTRATE ON THE BALL WITH ALL THOSE LOVELY FEATHERS EXPOSED. I THINK SCOOBY TOOK MORE THAN ONE BEAK DIVE IN TO THE SAND WATCHING CHYNA INSTEAD OF HIS FEET!

THE USB CABLE FOR THE CAMERA FINALLY ARRIVED YESTERDAY, AND SO MOM WAS ABLE TO DOWNLOAD THE PICS OF GLORIA. THE TWO BEST ONES ARE IN MY GALLERY. THERE WERE ALSO SOME PICS OF DUCKS ON THE CAMERA WHEN MOM DOWNLOADED IT, BUT THEY WEREN'T CLOSE ENOUGH FOR YOU TO REALLY SEE THE DUCKS. MAMA AND BABIES WERE HIDING IN THE ROSE BUSHES WHEN DAD SNAPPED THEM. SHE WOULD LET HIM GET ANY CLOSER, SO MOM DIDN'T BOTHER TO POST THEM. IT WOULD HAVE JUST LOOKED LIKE A PICTURE OF WEEDS.

MOM DIDN'T GET ME ANY GRAPES AT THE STORE YESTERDAY, BECAUSE THEY WERE JUST AWFUL. HOWEVER THEY DID HAVE THOSE LOCALLY GROWN PEACHES THAT SHE LIKED SO MUCH, AND SHE TRIED THEM ON ME AGAIN. I LIKED IT THIS TIME! AND THEY ARE A NICE CHANGE FROM THE GRAPES. HAD SOME BANANA TOO, AND OF COURSE SUGAR SNAP PEAS.

MY SUN BATH THIS MORNING WASN'T UNTIL 9:30, BUT SINCE THERE WERE A FEW CLOUDS IT WASN'T NEARLY AS HOT. IT IS STILL IN THE UPPER 80s HERE, BUT IT WAS NICE IN THE MORNING. FEELS HOTTER PER THE WEATHER CHANNEL BECAUSE IT IS HUMID FOR US HERE. YOU PROBABLY WOULDN'T THINK SO THOUGH.

  Hi Sweetpepper & Kacey
Hello everyone, Zeena here with today's BOTM POST. Today we head to the warm tropical Island Luzon, Philippines and visit an unusual and exotic species of Dove. The Luzon Bleeding-Heart. The Luzon Bleeding-heart (Gallicolumba luzonica) is one of a number of species of ground dove in the genus Gallicolumba that are called "bleeding-hearts". They get this name from a splash of vivid red colour at the centre of their white breasts. The Luzon Bleeding-heart is the species in which this feature is most pronounced, and on first sight it is hard to believe that the bird has not recently been wounded. A reddish hue that extends down the belly furthers the illusion of blood having run down the bird's front. The Luzon Bleeding-heart was featured on a Philippine 2-peso postage stamp in 1994.

The Luzon bleeding-heart is classified as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List and is listed on Appendix II of CITES., since it is commonly trapped. Local people use it for meat, but its striking appearance means that there is also a market for it in the pet trade. A captive breeding project has been started in Australia, and the Philippines. Habitat conservation is a priority but it will also be necessary to bring some of the three other species of bleeding heart doves (Negros, Sulu and Mindoro) into captivity, to prevent their extinction. Recently the first captive population of Negros bleeding heart doves has been established in the Philippines.

Only two of the five species of bleeding heart doves are held in captivity in Europe at present: the Luzon and the Mindanao. The European breeding programs for these species are coordinated by Bristol Zoo Gardens. They are being managed to provide a self-sustaining captive population and to develop important care and breeding techniques for use in the Philippines.

Identifying the areas where Luzon bleeding heart doves are found and the numbers that are left is the next step needed to secure this species in the wild. Once sites have been selected with the local community, the area will be protected to ensure the survival of the species in that area.

The areas where the bleeding heart dove lives also contain many other birds unique to these islands, all of which have been threatened by deforestation. In addition, some are threatened by hunting and illegal collection for the pet trade. By highlighting the plight of the bleeding heart dove, conservationists work to save the habitat for all the species in the area.

Although extremely rare in Aviculture 2 pairs were found for sale at $5000.US per pair.

It was another fun milonga last night. It was great to see everybirdie there! Mom signed off because of all the thunder and lightning, but we all stayed til the fireworks were done, then went home in Ipo's shuttle. Thanks to Kiddo, Taz, Lizzie, and Sam for another great party!
Mom spent yesterday afternoon at the pool, it turned out to be a gorgeous day. Last night the thunderstorms rolled in right around time for the milonga and continued til about 2AM. Mom was kept awake by Daisy, who is scared of the noise. She was wearing her thundershirt, but she was still pacing and whining a bit. Today it's gray, cloudy, and looks like it will rain again. It might be a shopping day or just a stay at home and clean the porch day. I hope you are having a fun day of sunshine and summer weather, and that you can get out to play awhile. Hugs, Falco

  Hi Sweetpepper--praying for Kacey
Hello my dear BC friends. It was a long day without our beloved BC family but we are happy to say once it was up and going it was actually much faster then before. I had a special request from one of my friends to example the breeding of mutations. As this is a limited BOTM series I will touch on it briefly. For anyone interested in more in depth study I have a number of very good links and references.
In simplest terms a "mutation" is any deviation from the "normal wild-type" of any species of animal or bird. They occur spontaneously in the wild, as well as in captivity. In the wild MOST mutations have a very limited life-span owing to their coloration or other physical characteristics that make them more visible and easier prey. An example of a successful mutations are the red markings on normal Congo African Greys. These individuals integrate well into existing grey colored flocks.
In Captivity mutations are able to live and mature thereby offering breeders an opportunity to reproduce like marked/colored offspring. An excellent example is the Blue Budgie. These spontaneously occurred in several continents. By breeding Blue offspring back to normal parents the breeders were able to produce more of the same. Through selective culling and breeding of F2-second generation-blues the color was stabilized. Mutations can continue to occur even in a new mutation color--such as the blue Budgies who then produced offspring with yellow-Lutino or albino pigments. Inbreeding, selective crossing and out crosses to other colored mutations has given rise to all the many colors common in Budgies.
When looking specifically at Quaker Parrots, whose natural color is green/grey we find that the first mutation was a Blue baby hatched in Belgium in the 1940s. It is a complete replacement of the normal green plumage by blue. The gene for blue plumage is Autosomal Recessive and both hens and cocks can be heterozygous or ‘split’ for or‘carriers’ of blue – depending upon your favored terminology! This means--both parents must carry the gene to produce blue even though they are visually "normals" Today there are a large number of mutations being bred.
With all mutations, breeders must cull out the colors they do not want and breed the desired colors into the gene pool. Through consecutive generations of offspring the color is improved upon, often mutating from the original mutation thereby adding yet another new color for serious breeders to work with. Mutation possibilities are limitless as they occur spontaneously and can not be "created" by humans. Hybrids must not be confused with mutations. Hybrids are the result of breeding two diverse species within the same Genera together--examples of which are the Hybrid Macaws, Blue/Gold mated to a Green Wing etc.
Today we will visit a selection of mutations from a number of different species, I hope you enjoy the results.

Glad that Kacey is doing better but still sending prayers her way too. Chi chi wrote to Kacey so I am blogging you and leaving a vote then for you too.
Skin sis and the grand tried to sell the yard again ! Last week they were going to do the yard sale on Friday and Saturday but on Saturday it poured rain so they waited till this weekend and do it instead. It was a nice day and I got out to see everyone. When little kids would come and be yelling and screaming I would yell real loud too so that ended me up in the house a few times locked down too. Those little rugrats just have a voice and when they scream I like to do it too. I didn’t see them being in lock down for it though so don’t think it was fair that I was. Mom isn’t sure if I learned my lesson or not though. ”Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forward”. Leaving a vote for you!! Hugs~~ Gus (RIP Chi chi)
