I've only been living with my current family a short time. I was originally owned by an older couple. The lady died and the old man had asthma. He kept me and my bird companions in a closet for two years. I have permanent eyesight problems as a result. Another kind lady rescued me but found she didn't have time to devote to me. I then lived with my current owner's brother. He had a big aviary, but I just could not get along with the other birds. I'm trying to learn how to be social. My new bird brother, Pascal, is trying to show me how nice it is to live with people and to be friendly.

Hi! My name is Peanut

I am a Congo African Grey from Gansevoort, NY.

17 years old   M

Congo African Grey

Peanuts, of course.

Only my cage and playstand--I'm not willing to be touched, but I like to be let out to sit on top of my cage or climb over to my playstand.

People who would rather keep a pet and neglect it rather than letting it go to a family who will love it.

My new family is showing me lots of kindness and patience. I have trouble trusting people, but I think this will be a good home for me.

.

Will you go away if I growl long enough?.

  Hi Peanut
I hope with enough love and attention, you'll start to trust your new owners. Woof and Meow have never known anything but love and we're going to do everything we can to make sure it stays that way if they outlive us. Try to be happy, little guy. Life has it's good side too, and it sounds like you're finally there.

  Hello Peanut!
I can't believe it!!!! Me, Bird of the Week!!!! Thank you for visiting me, and for leaving me a nice message. I will make sure to ask for extra treats this week, and a party:) You won't believe this. Poirot has learned to say," I'm gonna wring your little neck," on command. Mama pretends to wring a neck with her hands, and he says it. What a crazy bird he is. I hope in due time you learn to love and trust your family. I am voting for you. Pringle

  Hi Peanut!
MY BABY BROTHER, AN AFRICAN GREY, / NEEDS A VOTE FROM HIS FRIENDS EVERYDAY/ TO HELP HIM WIN A WONDERFUL CAGE,/ THAT WOULD LAST HIM FOR YEARS UNTIL RIPE OLD AGE. Poirot my brother has entered a limerick in the poetry contest, located on the home page. He is the first bird on the second page, ( African Grey lying on a cocktail glass.) You can read the limerick on his page. If you like his limerick will you vote for it? I am voting for you. Many thanks, Pringle

I'm so sorry you had to live in a closet. People can be so mean sometimes.I was a rescue. A nice lady took me in too until she found my mom and dad to take me. I used to live in a dog cage and only ate wild bird seed. My only toy was a bell that was broke. Now I get lots of good food and mom makes me bunches of toys! I still have some trust issues but I'm getting better. I'm glad you found a mom and dad who love u so much! Here's a vote!

  Don't touch me!!!
Peanut, although settled in nicely, is still rather antisocial. If you put your finger out, she will gently beak it. If you try to get her on your hand, she gets mean and tries to fly away. The problem is, her wing was pinioned by a previous owner so she can't fly. Instead she plops to the floor (thick carpenting) and tries to walk away. We still have a lot of work to do.

Come visit me, Peanut & Pascal.

Peanut said hello yesterday, out loud and clear. My husband had thought that he heard her muttering it before. I wonder if she knew it before she came to us or if her brother bird taught it to her.

  Working on trust
Oh Peanut is a tricky girl...and smart too. I've been trying to build trust with her get her to climb on a stick. Each successful climb on gets her a peanut, which is her favorite. She reluctantly will put one foot on. Then, it takes a long time to get her to put the other on. She usually keeps at least one toe hooked around the top of the cage so she's on the stick, yet still on her cage. Isn't she clever!

Come visit me, Peanut & Pascal.

  Peanut's progress
Well, we've had Peanut about a month now. She's gotten a bit more agggressive towards Pascal now that she feels more comfortable in our house. It's sad, because they whistle and chatter back and forth all day long (they're in separate rooms for now), yet put them near each other and watch out! We can get near her and touch her beak, although no other parts of her. That's such an improvement over being screamed at when you got near her cage. My husband had a goal of getting her to step up on his hand by the end of 2006. We didn't meet that goal. One time, however, she actually picked up a foot when he said step up (but she didn't put it on his hand). Yesterday, my husband thought that he heard her say hello. I'm thinking at some point in her past, Peanut had a good home and lots of attention since those behaviors are starting to shine through. Although I had a lot of reservations about taking her in, I am definitely happy that we gave her a chance.

Come visit me, Peanut & Pascal.

UZI WAS VERY ANTI-SOCIAL ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO. HE IS A VERY SWEET, VERY SOCIAL BIRD NOW...BUT, HE DOES NOT LIKE STRANGERS...GREYS ARE FUNNY THAT WAY. IT SOUNDS LIKE HE IS COMING ALONG QUITE NICELY...HE WILL TRUST YOU IN NO TIME. THAT IS ALOT OF RE-HOMING FOR ONE AFRICAN GREY. BEST OF LUCK TO YOU, MY FRIEND...UZI DOES NOT REALLY ENJOY THE COMPANY OF THE OTHER BIRDS..HE WILL SAY HELLO, BUT HE DOES NOT WANT TO HANG OUT WITH THEM...IT IS MUCH MORE FUN TO PLAY TRICKS ON DOGS...THEY ARE SO GULLIBLE

Hi From Monty May and T
Hi Peanut and Peanut's Mom. I am sure that Peanut and Pascal listen to the radio when you are not there. T always leaves the radio on for me. It is a soft rock channel which is our favorite. Sort of keeps me company when she is out. Sounds as if Peanut is making good progress. T says she can only imagine how thrilled you must be when you progress that little bit further with her. I know you will win her over in the end. All we neeed is a good home to shine. MM and T

  Progress
Peanut continues to make progress. She actually took a peanut from my husband's hand last night. She growled a bit, but we did it twice with her. That was a pretty good sign of trust by her. We're slowly getting closer to the "touch" moment. She loves peanuts so much that I'm using them as her reward for good behavior.

Come visit me, Peanut & Pascal.

  Hi Peanut
I am also a owner of a very neglected Grey named Cherokee. I am very happy to see that your bird does have its feathers. Mine was so abused that it picked all of the lower feather off. My husband is the only person that can handle her. Even then sometimes it is very tough. it took him about 6 months just to get her to climb on his finger. Just keep working at it. It will be well worth the wait once this happens.
P.S. She is now queen of the castle and still mostly featherless but we are still working on it.

Come visit me, Boo, Gizzy, Fred, Cherokee & Joey.

  More on Peanut
Although Peanut won't let us touch her yet, she is partially stick trained. We either let her climb back to her cage or we get her on the stick to lift her back (she screams and doesn't like it, but with patience it can be accomplished). We don't have the concern with her flying away from us as we try to get her. They unfortunately pinioned her (cut off the end section of one wing) so she can never fly again. How sad for a bird to never be able to fly. So much about her past life breaks my heart. She generally stays on her cage and even goes back into the inside of the cage at night time. The first few nights were tough, but she's in the routine now. The top of her cage opens and to teach her "night night" I had to gently lay the cover over the cage and her to coax her back inside the cage. She loves to come out, even though she's not real social yet.

Thank you both for your comments and encouragement.

Come visit me, Peanut & Pascal.

  Peanut in the closet
I belong to a bird rescue group and am fostering my first bird through them (I have 3 birds of my own). Nellie is a Catalina macaw who was also kept in a "closet" type situation for the last 5 years. During the 10 years before that we don't know her history. (So she's 16 yr. old). I've had her for a month and have been touching her beak and stroking her head (when she seems calm enough)but she is freaked out by everything. I don't let her out because I'm afraid I won't be able to get her back in her cage. Any hints?

Come visit me, Carlos & Nellie.
