Get Your Parrot To Play With Bird Toys

Not all pet birds know how to play. Follow these tips to get your parrot playing with bird toys.

Go Slow: If a bird doesn’t accept a toy, don’t give up. Let your bird get used to it. First, set it outside the cage for a few days. Next, move it closer. Then move it to on the outside of the cage. Finally, move it inside. Make changes slowly.

Show ’Em: Birds are naturally part of a flock. Show your bird how to play with a toy by example. That's how it would learn in a flock. Tug at your bird’s toys, pretend to nuzzle and bite them. Make excited noises about them. Comment on the toys.

Perfect Placement: Don’t let a toy go ignored. Place one near the feed dish, wrap favorite treats around others so that your bird accidentally moves colorful parts of toys or makes bells ring.

Get Creative: You can thread toasted oats on a shoestring for a toy, pile bottle caps in a food cup for a toy box. Purchase wooden sticks as toys and attach them to parts of the cage. Strips of newspaper on top of the cage become a toy as a bird chews it and pulls the strips through the cage bars, into the cage.
