White millet attracts birds like sparrows, white-throated sparrows (pictured), dark-eyed Juncos and more.
White millet, also known as millet or proso millet, is a fine bird seed for your backyard bird feeding station but don’t confuse it with milo. This is a great bird seed to attract sparrows, which prefer its size and taste.
You might have read that last sentence and thought, "Why do I want to attract those irritating brown birds?” Not all sparrows are irritating like nonnative House Sparrows, which can take over bird feeders.
Native sparrows that enjoy white millet at backyard bird feeders include White-throated Sparrows, White-crowned Sparrows, Harris’s Sparrows, Fox Sparrows and Dark-eyed Juncos. Indigo Buntings and Painted Buntings will come in for white millet seed, too.
Handfuls of white millet seed scattered on the ground or on tray feeders make a fun addition to any back yard, especially during migration, when many sparrows are on the move.
